      How does she idle? Air/fuel screw, how many turns out? Is it a crisp throttle response? Send a pitchure of your motorcycle so I could see the exhaust and intake. To Erocco3964@gmail.com. Start by cleaning air filter, and check oil level. Most time that will be a future. Let us know how that works out.

      sometimes with newer bikes you gotta reset your idle by turning your bike to run for 10seconds 4x to reset your idle but thats usually if your bike idles good then gets faster n faster, I would try the carb first before doing that tho

    When I removed the plug, I found my screw already adjusted to the "sweet spot" that you recommend, 1 5/8 out. I left it there. I've had no black smoke and my spark plugs were light tan when I changed them with 10K miles on them. The only adjustment I needed to do was replace my stock #42 pilot jet with a #45 one to eliminate the cough on take-off, which I referred to in my comment on your video on replacing jets.
    Thank you for your excellent videos!

    I have a xl1200 that came to me with a arlen ness air filter I was getting a rough idle, and lots of popping in decel. I upped the idle jet from 42 to 45 and drilled out the plug for the idle air mixture screw after watching your videos. The screw was only 1 turn out. I upped it to 2 and added screamin eagle slip ons as well. Runs great now, thanks a million Rocco!

    I took your advice and replaced my Petcock because the bike was running very rough after 30 minutes of riding. It was idling very fast, then I watched this video and found one of the hose lines was cracking at the bottom of carb. I fixed that and now the 2006 sportster custom is running much better. You saved me a bunch of money and I was able to do it myself. I like learning stuff like this. Again Thank you very much I appreciate your time and advice. Love your video's.

      Happy to help, remember it's a most important to have a clean air filter. If you run your hand under your air filter and there's oil on your fingertips there's a good chance you have too much oil in the motor. Check the oil dipstick, halfway full is where these motors run their best. Otherwise they will foul your plugs. Too much oil in the motor. This will result in a dirty air filter and a terrible riding bike. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and your sub drinkster. Ride safe and have a great day. Let us know how it works out.

  • @JackelinHyde

    This is very very helpful. Reading through the comments, i think i may have narrowed down and pinpointed my issue. Plug fouling. I get my fuel mixture and idle just perfect, then 200 miles down the road, she starts backfiring. I pull the plugs and they are dry and black. Im betting its the exhaust. The previous owner slapped some shotgun exhaust on it. My bet is i need to swap out the jets. Whats your opinion with this limited information? Its a 91 883. Fuel mixture is at one and a little over a half turns and the idle is at 900 rpm.

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  5 месяцев назад

      Happy to help. I would test the Petcock first. That's where it all starts. Make sure the peacock holes vacuum. If the diaphragm is failing, that means it won't hold vacuum and it will leak gas and not operate properly which equals a poorly running motor. check the vacuum line from your carburetor to the back of your Petcock or bottom. I will send you the video. Any questions just ask. ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.htmlsi=MfomcbF3wze-rO5b thank you for watching and all your support Jack.. Let us know how it works out. • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  5 лет назад +1

      I would check your carburetor excelerator pump diaphragm. Remove air filter cover, Twist throttle and look to see if gas squirts gas into your carb. If it does, then check vacuum lines coming off your petcock. Let me know how this works outruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.html Take a look, hope this helps.

    Rocco, bought an 05 Twin 88, stock carb, unknown 2 into 1 with baffle, high flow filter. Was set at 3 turns, plugs look pretty good, a bit sluggish at higher rpm, set at two turns, runs much better but plugs turning a bit to the grey side. But runs great! No backfire, nor did it at 3. Think I should go to 2.5 because of plug color? Couldn’t tell you how jetted. But if it runs good and plugs look good, should I just leave it?
    One more question. The mixture screw affects the mixture throughout the complete range of throttle, not just idle, doesn’t it? And thank you?

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  3 года назад

      Helps with transition from idle to mid range. but it all adds up in the end. I would leave it at two turns. That tells me the Jets are right size. Hope this helps thank you for your sub Yoso.. Ride safe and have a great day.

      @@TwoWheelRocco Much appreciated! My '02 Dyna was very neglected by the previous owner so it's been an adventure of tuning her up. Definite signs of running too rich for too long. I adjusted the idling screw to bring it to 1k rpm with choke fully pushed in. Then I started the mixture. When I closed that mixture screw all the way off, it was almost 3 full turns. Backed it out to 1.5 and she idled so much smoother. To double check I had it good, I left her running and slowly started closing the mixture screw down until the engine did it's slow stutter then reversed it until full recovery. Was exactly 1/2 turn. Readjusted the idler screw after that. Added a little seafoam to the tank to help clean any junk out and took her for a spin. So much smoother! Rocco, I just successfully cleaned the carb and fired up a moth balled 1999 883 , after draining the oil tank which only had 3 cups I changed the filter and added 2 quarts. after running it for five minutes I checked the oil tank which was now full and over flowing. could there have been oil lingering in the crank case?

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  4 года назад

      Yes, it's a dry sump motor and sitting for a period of time oil works its way into the motor and then you see it's low an add a quart and when you start the bike up the oil recycles to the oil tank and you end up at way too much oil. Clean air filter and remove oil. I like to see half way on your oil stick. Happy to hear you got her running. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.

      I don't really understand rev limiter, there is no rev limiter on a 04 XL1200 sportster. . That's a carbureted bike. Sounds like your jet is too big on your main and that's why it's sputtering out if it was not big enough, it would just lean out and rev with No Power. If it's sputters, it's too much fuel. Hey rocco, I got a 2005 sportster 1200 xl. I recently threw a 2-1 exhaust and oil cooler on for hot california riding. I had shotgun pipes before, running a 48 slow and 185 main. With the 2-1 i experienced black smoke at idle and fouled plugs so i put in a 45. I am not getting any adjustment in my mixture screw. I ran a 42, a 45, the 48. And rebuilt the carb completely 2 times and i cant get any response adjusting the mixture screw. Even with the 42 in and fully seated the bike would not stumble or elevate rpms when backed out. I started to get an intermittent high idle after coming to a stop light and checked for intake leaks. Nothing. Unplugged map sensor and intermittent high idle went away and would come back when plugged in. I put in a new map and no more random high idle. But still no change in sound or idle when adjusting mixture screw in both directions. Seems to be on the richer side even with a 42 at idle. I checked enrichener for good function and closing and pressure tested the path to rule out that leaking fuel at idle into the system. I can not figure out why im not getting any idle screw adjustment. Please help

But the bike ran fine with no black smoke. I cleaned the plugs and started playing with the air fuel mixture screw. I started at 3 turns out and am now at 1 3/4 turns out, hoping the carbon won't reappear on the rear plug. How do I know where the "sweet spot" is? The bike had a great response at 3, 2.5, 2.0 and 1.75 turns out. do I keep leaning it out until the bike doesn't idle smoothly? Throttle response is good. On occasion, when decelerating I would hear the carb "spit" but not loud and only once. Should I bring the screw out until there is no spitting at all when decelerating?

    I have a 04, 883 put a new chineseum carb on it and it wouldn't hardly start. That screw was turned way out like 4 turns or so is that normal? When it did start as soon as I touched the throttle it died. Set it to approximately where you did and it starts but I had to idle it up to stop the popping. The original carb popped too, I replaced it because it was leaking fuel bad, actually caught fire today so that's why I put the China one on.

When i took the carb off the mix screw was backed out like 4 turns so i re set it to 1 and 3/4 and my throttle responce picked up significantly, but i still have a weird backfire at around 3500 rpm. The backfire was why i thought the mix was off. It also pops a bit on decel. I never noticed any smoke from the bike last season. I rode it all summer and just ignored the backfire.
