The screws are Japanese which means they aren't actually Phillips head, they are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) head which is better than Phillips. If you compare the two heads side-by-side, you will see a tiny "x" inside the "+" with a deeper hole for a better bite with a JIS screwdriver or bit. Amazing. I’m learning everything on my own with my two sportsters. A 2002 1200 and a 1995 883xlh and they’re both givin me every problem in the world. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
Mate!!! Sitting here in Perth , Western Australia watching your video is not only informative but truly enjoyable. Keep up your your instructional videos, you are a true craftsman.
Just wanted to say Thanks! Your videos have all helped me in one way or another. Most recently, I replaced the stock Pilot Jet #42 with a #45 (along with cleaning the carb) and now my stock 2005 Sportster XL883 starts and runs perfectly at low rpm's. Before, it would cough briefly in warm weather and a lot in cold weather, plus it would "run on" when killing the engine. Now, everything is perfect! Keep up the great videos. You've given me confidence while saving me a pile of money.
@@TwoWheelRocco If you're interested, I used a JIS screwdriver with a size R/25 bit which gets a fantastic bite into the screw heads. I have several sizes of these JIS head bits and screwdrivers and this particular size works best in the Keihin carb. Very easy to control with no damage to the screws.
UPDATE and question for you: I just changed my stock air filter system to a free breathing one from TC Bros on my 2005 Sportster 883 and went for a ride on 2-lane country roads, cruising at speeds between 35 - 55 mph in 55 degree temperature. In the past this was no problem but now I am suffering from anemic performance at all rpm's plus some coughing at constant throttle at +/- 50 mph. I'm thinking of changing my jets from 45 idle to 48 and from 175 main to 180. What do you think? Also, should I go from 1 3/4 turns out on my air/fuel screw to 2 full turns?
Rocco, you ROCK! ❤ Wish you were here in Nashville to give me one on one with my Sportster. I've only been riding since Fall of 2019, which is when I purchased my very 1st Harley, 2005 Sportster 883 XL. She had about 31K miles then, I just hit 34K. Yesterday, she cut off on me, and I was able to coast to a safe spot. I saw an error code, but couldn't remember it 🤬. After I had come to a safe spot to stop, I turned her off, and was making phone calls to prepare for a tow, and decided to turn the ignition key, and she was ready to roll. Started her back up with no problem. Rode to a friend's home, that was about 10 minutes away. No issues. Sat there for about 30 minutes or so. Decided to ride home before dark, less than 25 minutes away, made it home. No issues. I ran through the diagnostic check, and there were no errors. Going to have her maintenanced (oil change, Air filter, spark plugs, etc) and checked over, to see what caused her to just cutoff like that. Appreciate your videos. It's my guide to understanding my bike when I speak with a mechanic and it not sound foreign to me AND not getting scammed
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. I would look at your vacuum line that comes off your petcock. Get old and collapse will cut off your fuel supply. That's why when you restart the bike it will start up because the hose now is functioning opening up the petcock Diaphragm to let Fuel into your system. Simple fix Thank you for watching and your sub.Natasha.Let me know how it works out Ride safe and have a great day
i have been riding vstar 1100 and it's carburator freaking me out. harley's change my mind it seems so easy to maintain and clean. i hope someday i'll buy some carburated one hell of a harley ! thans for video.

Hey bud, I really appreciate you taking the time to go over this carb for us. It really helped me figure out the issue with my kid’s 883. New subscriber here
Rocco I bought a carb bike so I could actually do most DIY on it and you my friend have really helped out with my bike project. I would have never attempted a bunch of stuff without you Bro!
Update...changed the Main jet from 185 to 190 with the 45 pilot - went to 2 3/4 turns a/f screw. This really smoothed out the throttle...Thanks again Bill M

Thanks for the great videos! My bike was converted to a 1200 and it looks like they left the stock 883 jets in! This explains why I have to baby the throttle and it really doesn't like to run wide open. Jet kit on the way!
Happy to help. Follow the video and I think you should get some positive response. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching it all your support Chris. Ride safe and have a great day.

Dude, so cool to see that this re-jet is actually easier than I thought. Not going to have to spend a shit ton of money to do this job......$10.00 impact Screwdriver and bought the jets online for $10.00 on Amazon! You Rock Rocco!!!!
Excellent info and instructional video. I know what I need to do now, and feel confident doing it if I have to. Might just put the stock backing back on lol!
Brother, this was the best instructional video I could have asked for. My new air cleaner is otw, and I'm wanting to do as much of my own work to my 97 sporty as I can, and I'm sure I can tackle the rejetting now. Just subscribed Thanks!
A more free-flowing airbox air filter and better pipes the engine will run leaner, yup I learned that from ThunderBay cycles in Tampa FL. They do GREAT work.
Hello Rocco, just wanted to say...Can't thank you enough for all your advice and assistance Kept playing with A/F screw...at 3 1/4 turns - the lurching has stopped at steady throttle...I should of kept the 48 Pilot jet in lol All's well :) Thanks again! Bill M 06 Sportster XL1200C
Thanks Rocco uR The best ..I just re jetted my 2000 HD Sportster 1200 Last nite & to my Surprise stock jets were an 42 & 170 ..I upped it to an 48 & 190 ..its not back together yet but hopefully soon & just Hope she runs better with Hi glow air filter & st Short Shots duel exhausts ..Thanks

@@TwoWheelRocco I definitely will. Your videos have popped up multiple times while I have been fixing up this bike. Unfortunately I have a lot more to do now after a dog ran out in front of me on the highway. I have to replace the exhaust and air box so I figured I might as well upgrade to performance parts with the insurance money. I've been joking with people that it will be better then before and it only cost a knee instead of an arm and a leg. Lol
Great video! wish I'd of have seen this video back when I had my Sportster. 96 fat boy now that I plan on doing a lot more wrenching on myself. subscribed
Great collection of Videos! You have a 1200 I have a 883. What jet sizes do I have and what size do I move up to because of open headers. And How many washers do I need?
How does she run and Idle? Three washers under the needle is where I would start. You will need to open your carburetor and look to be sure. Stock would be 42 starter 165 main. open pipe, is it a full open short exhaust pipe? What intake are you running? Let us know how that works out. Thank you for watching and your Sub Craig. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Hey Rocco. Your videos have saved me hours of troubleshooting! I have a 04 Sportster 883 custom with Screaming Eagle pipes and Stage 1 intake. The idle jet is stock (42). I've cleaned it and it idles better, but it stalls after releasing the throttle. My guess is throw a 45 idle jet and adjust the air/fuel screw (currently at 2.5 turns). Any thoughts? Cheers
Happy to help I would start with the air fuel. What do you have? It said that I would set you know quarter turn and make it a little richer and you should resolve that problem before I would put a 45 jet in it. I love the videos My question is I put a big sucker air cleaner on my 06 Harley Davidson 1200 sportster I have a 185 & 45 in it takes a little bit to warm it will spit a cough.
Hey man,can I put 50 190 jets on a 89’ 1200 Sportster with straight through pipes and rough crafts air filter. Really like your videos,I find them very helpful.thanks man,Chris.
This is such a good video. Thank you. I’m hoping to get some advice. I have a 99 sportster 883 and I just ordered v&h short shots and an s&s air intake. What jets should I order? Any input would be really helpful. Thanks for your time and the great video.
Happy to help, This is an 883 so I would start off with a 45 Idle jet. 180 main and three washes under the slide needle. 1 3/4 experience air fuel adjustment out. Start there, Then you have to. test ride and make adjustments. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching and all your support chill, Ride safe and have a great day. Thank you Rocco for your knowledge. I have a 06 custom xl 1200 sportster with Vance and Hines short shots and a A/N big air sucker air intake, for some reason when i let off throttle i get back fire or if i set at a stop light and sap the throttle i get a pop from the carburetor. The bike seems to run fine no loss of power just back fire and poping. Do you think it could be the jets im unsure if they have been changed. Thank you very much for your help and thank you for the great videos you are a great help.
Happy to help. I would try to adjust the air fuel screw rich it up and that should get rid of the air pop on deceleration. Any questions just ask thank you for all your support Michael. Ride safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco Rocco what jets would u recommend for an Evo dyna with slip on pipes intake is stock I think. Previous owner said it's stage 1. It has 44 160 in it but spits at you down low with light throttle
I was having jetting woes on a Sportster I just bought. Turned out to be the VOES. Bad Voes and you get jetting woes. Can't be jetted until the Voes is replaced, if bad. Now that it's running relatively good, I'm going to try a #48 and a 185 as done here. If I can get it, I would like to have no popping on deceleration, even.
Rocco, thanks for your videos. I have a 98 xlc883 with k&n and drilled stock mufflers. With a 42 and 160 main i think the bike is very lean. The drilled pipes have very little snap/pep and only make power when the bike is shouting loudly. The mix screw is 3.5 out and the bike still stumbles when you blip the throttle warm. I am in the belief a rejet to 45 and 175-180 will help, but the drag pipes are always going to rob my low end. Do you believe in lollipops/insert baffles or do you recommend a slip on that can help get my low end power back?
Happy to help I believe the 45 and the 175 or 180 is the way to go. Get a set of slip on and turn your air fuel screw down to one and three-quarter out. Then test/ tune. Thank you for watching and all your support. Any questions just ask. Ride safe and have a great day.
Hey Rocco. i discovered you a cpl months ago when I bought my 1st ever Harley. An 06 Sportster 1200 custom with V&H Short shots and a custom high flow breather... that is spitting, chugging aaaaaand hesitating. Once I pull it out of storage in the spring I will be applying this fix. Thanks for the help... if I have any questions I'll be sure to ask. Ride safe!!! haha
Hey Rocco. Thanks for all the help you have no idea about. I’m looking at resetting my 99 sportster 883 hugger. Any advice on sizing? I’m running an Arlen ness monster sucker and chopped OG original exhaust recently wrapped.

Dude where is your shop located. I think I'm having the same issues with my vtx 1300. The guy I bought it from put Vance and Hines exhaust and modded the air box. Runs great when moving but warming up and low gear not so much.
Hey Rocco Just wanted to say thanks for these amazing videos. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I watched the video where you replaced the choke on the sportster and I got that done with your help. Before I replaced the choke, my 2005 sportster was spitting and hesitating, and has the same air box as this one with aftermarket pipes. I'm going to follow these steps to see if I need to change my pilot and main because I'm guessing they are stock just like you found on this one. Thanks again!
My 2002 XLH1200C, you have to keep the choke on for couple minutes til warm. It also hesitates accelerating of idle som times. It has drad pipes, but i think stock air cleaner. Should I change the low speed jet and ajust mix.
Try this slide needle adjustment, This will help with your off idle performance. Take look a this video. ruclips.net/video/G1XD0hHtwCw/видео.html. Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub Stephen. Let us know how this works out. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Hey Rocco!, I appreciate you man for teaching me all these things I’ve got a 1250 sportster with andrews n2 cams straight pipes and a kurykan hyper charger, I have 48/185 but I have to use full open choke to turn the bike on if I don’t there’s no turning on only sputters any recommendations? Also at low speeds it lurches/sputters unless I give it more gas.
Happy to help. It's normal to have touse your choke to start the bike in the morning. Your Air/gas screw could be adjusted to clean up some of the rough spots in the transition of Idle to off idle. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and your sub Alexis. Ride safe. Have a great day.
Hey Rocco, thank you for the great video! I always learn from these. I have a 97 sportster; completely stock. It has a bad spit whenever warming up, mostly when it’s cold. I’m putting a new jet in today and, cleaning the pilot (should have bought one, now I know). Should I start with seeing if that solves my issue, then more forward to a quarter turn to add a little fuel? Or should I do both to start. Thank you again for posting and reading our comments!

Runs great, but at stops, stop songs lights, traffic ECT! She’ll burp, fart, miss Start to stall, engine light comes on, I work the throttle to keep it alive! Get to next STOP all is fun; very intermittent! New petcock n filter, vacuum line new, map sensor working! Watched your other carb video the other day, removed carb took it apart the low end, no junk in bowl or jets, which I removed and sprayed plenty of carb spray- gumout! Took out air mixture screw cleaned ! Set it at 1 3/4 turns. Same issue; intermittent. Went to HD yesterday new accelerator pump, spring and those mini O rings! Road tested Same thing! I’m stubborn and determined WTF
Try raising your idle a little. When a motor will not idle on deceleration usually there's an air issue and that's why she stalls, the air gas mixture is lean. Spray some carb cleaner around your intake and vacuum lines around your carb and see if the idle raises if it does you are sucking air around that area. Hope this helps.
Two Wheel Rocco Ok, I’m playing with the idle, bought a cost effective tach to see be ck mark/reference point. 2 weeks ago I changed both intake gaskets, rear cylinder had a vacuum leak, carb to intake seal is also new. Been spraying carb-cleaner around above incase I didn’t seal intake to heads properly, checked tightness of the intake bolts when I pulled carb the other day. What didn’t due; was check was number on main jet and air fuel jet, saw u today and said dang had them out! I will do that see what numbers they are! I’ll do as u advise! Stay tuned! Tinker

Before, it would cough briefly in warm weather and a lot in cold weather, plus it would "run on" when killing the engine. Now, everything is perfect! Keep up the great videos. You've given me confidence while saving me a pile of money.
Happy to read all went well. Thank you for your support. Ride Safe and have a great day.
@@boomerguy9935 Thank you for your comment. I've heard about these screwdriver bits. And they are a big help. Ride safe and have a great day.
Great collection of Videos! You have a 1200 I have a 883. What jet sizes do I have and what size do I move up to because of open headers. And How many washers do I need?
How does she run and Idle? Three washers under the needle is where I would start. You will need to open your carburetor and look to be sure.
Thank you Rocco for your knowledge. I have a 06 custom xl 1200 sportster with Vance and Hines short shots and a A/N big air sucker air intake, for some reason when i let off throttle i get back fire or if i set at a stop light and sap the throttle i get a pop from the carburetor. The bike seems to run fine no loss of power just back fire and poping. Do you think it could be the jets im unsure if they have been changed. Thank you very much for your help and thank you for the great videos you are a great help.

@@TwoWheelRocco Rocco what jets would u recommend for an Evo dyna with slip on pipes intake is stock I think. Previous owner said it's stage 1. It has 44 160 in it but spits at you down low with light throttle
I would try 45 Idle 180 main jet. One and three-quarter turns out on the air fuel screw. Test ride and let us know how that works out.
@@TwoWheelRocco well all I can say is WOW! Fixed all the stumbling and spitting, even felt like it picked up some power. Thank you so much Rocco!🤘🤘

Try manipulating the slide needle I'll send you a video on that.ruclips.net/video/G1XD0hHtwCw/видео.htmlsi=Ho9EoUdL3y6fQFew.

My 2002 XLH1200C, you have to keep the choke on for couple minutes til warm. It also hesitates accelerating of idle som times. It has drad pipes, but i think stock air cleaner. Should I change the low speed jet and ajust mix.

Two Wheel Rocco I will ask, I’ll try to make it short, I’m sure that u have a video for my Very intermittent issue ! ‘’06 HD 1200 XL C; 6100 miles.
Two Wheel Rocco
Ok, I’m playing with the idle, bought a cost effective tach to see be ck mark/reference point. Stay tuned! Tinker
