  • Harley Davidson Sportster Carburator Re-jetting. This was done on an XL1200 with Screamin Eagle Exhaust. With an open air cleaner. Stock this would have an 45 pilot and an 180 main jet. We installed an 48 pilot and 185 main. Two turns out on Air fuel screw. And this cleaned up the lean fuel condition that would cause popping and spitting.

When I bought my bike it already had screaming eagle slip ons and stage one screaming eagle air cleaner, but occasionally is farts and misfire. I wonder what that could be. Thanks in advance.

      Two Wheel Rocco I will ask, I’ll try to make it short, I’m sure that u have a video for my Very intermittent issue ! ‘’06 HD 1200 XL C; 6100 miles. Runs great, but at stops, stop songs lights, traffic ECT! She’ll burp, fart, miss Start to stall, engine light comes on, I work the throttle to keep it alive! Get to next STOP all is fun; very intermittent! New petcock n filter, vacuum line new, map sensor working! Watched your other carb video the other day, removed carb took it apart the low end, no junk in bowl or jets, which I removed and sprayed plenty of carb spray- gumout! Took out air mixture screw cleaned ! Set it at 1 3/4 turns. Same issue; intermittent. Went to HD yesterday new accelerator pump, spring and those mini O rings! Road tested Same thing! I’m stubborn and determined WTF

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  4 года назад +1

      Try raising your idle a little. When a motor will not idle on deceleration usually there's an air issue and that's why she stalls, the air gas mixture is lean. Spray some carb cleaner around your intake and vacuum lines around your carb and see if the idle raises if it does you are sucking air around that area. Hope this helps.

      Ok, I’m playing with the idle, bought a cost effective tach to see be ck mark/reference point. 2 weeks ago I changed both intake gaskets, rear cylinder had a vacuum leak, carb to intake seal is also new. Been spraying carb-cleaner around above incase I didn’t seal intake to heads properly, checked tightness of the intake bolts when I pulled carb the other day. What didn’t due; was check was number on main jet and air fuel jet, saw u today and said dang had them out! I will do that see what numbers they are! I’ll do as u advise! Stay tuned! Tinker

    Great info Rocco, I have a 2004 Sportster identical to this one and have been battling carb coughing & spark plug soot for over 6 mths. I purchased mine used with SE II pipes and the same air cleaner as the one in this video. Like I said basically same bike (color and all). So far I found a leak in carb seal due to needing a new seal gasket. That got rid of carb cough but I still have the other issue which is the plugs are black, no matter what plugs I use (even tried the SE II plugs). Checked carb has 45 low and 180 main. Its weird, the bike has a surge on throttle from low to high which I think indicates the need for rejetting as your video suggest but again the plugs are always black with soot? New Carb time? Since I have no idea what previous owner may have done (drilled). Lost at this point, please help!

      I would start with Testing your petcock, sounds like you have a diaphragm leak which would creating a rich situation, by gas being pulled threw your vacuum line into your intake ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.html. then I would try washers under the needle to give you a little more performance off idle. ruclips.net/video/G1XD0hHtwCw/видео.html. How do you tell if its to rich after you set it? Thanks

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  4 года назад

      Most times it will be a secondary reason why you have a rich condition like Petcock Diaphragm failing and letting gas pass into that vacuum hose coming off your petcock then into your intake that is the most common reason why motorcycles run rich or a very dirty air filter. The way to tell is to look at your spark plugs. How is your bike running now?

    Thanks for this video! I have a 2005 1200C, that is stage one , like in this video. Carb had a 42/175 in it the first time I opened it up. I upgraded it to 45/180. The bike starts rough, as in I need a full choke to start cold. Once I start going highway speed, I cut it to half; at a mile and off at too. At that point, it will start and run well without a choke. Let it sit 30 minutes and the process needs to start all over. Makes it tough if I start off at the house and want to make quick stops in the city, it will never warm up at 35 mph. I seen another subscriber have success with a 48/190. Is that what you would go with?? Also, I have some minor decel popping, dropping off the accelerator at highway speeds. This is very hard to hear, better since I corrected exhaust leak! Thanks for your video, and thanks for any advice you can offer

    Great minds think alike. As i mentioned two days ago. The guy prior changed the exhaust to Vance Hines . It also had a rough start and it spit a lot. I went ahead and up'ed the idle jet from a 45/190 to a 48/190. Left the main jet at 190. Wow! It starts on a dime. Choke not needed. But I was always a creature of habit. I would pull the choke out prior to starting. After the jet changed up to 48. Started much cleaner and it sounds great!. What method do you use to measure desired idle speed? I'd like to set it for 800-1000 Rpm but I do it by ear. My 2003 FXST does not have tach. Thus I do the ear test. One other question: When did HD start putting over flow drain on the bowl? My 2003 does not have this. Unfortunately, the gas then goes into crankcase. Do they have replacement bowl for the HD CV carburetor with the over flow drain?
    thanks,

    I have the same issue. When I press on that quarter throttle I’ll get a cough, popping noise from within the carburetor. I’ll also get some hesitation. I’m going to look at the Jets to see if they never changed them and kept them at stock. Rocco, I also had the throttle stick on me. One time was scary because it was revving high and I literally had to hit the kill switch for the bike to turn off because it didn’t want to roll back. My understanding is that there’s a screw or nut that is closer to the carb body by where the two throttle cables meet. Apparently, that has to be adjusted. Have you ever experienced this happening and if so, what do you recommend?

    The screws are Japanese which means they aren't actually Phillips head, they are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) head which is better than Phillips. If you compare the two heads side-by-side, you will see a tiny "x" inside the "+" with a deeper hole for a better bite with a JIS screwdriver or bit. If you force a Phillips head into this too hard, you will strip the head. (Ask me how I know.) My Mazda Miata had these screws everywhere in the body and the engine. You can get the JIS screwdrivers on Amazon, eBay or anywhere for just a few bucks. They work much better than an impact driver.
    I'm not criticizing because I think these videos are excellent; just offering info which helped me a bunch. I learned the hard way.

    i know this video is old BUT I NEED HELP! i put a new breather on mine. its pretty much open air flow with a fliter to stop junk from getting in the carb. but i did not re jet the carb. but it idles good, but when i start to add a bit of throttle, it boggs down and black smoke starts chooching out the tale pipes. until i go a bit past that point in the throttle, and then it revs right up...i bought a set of new gets for both idel and slow flow. they will be here in a week. BUT WHY IS IS ACTING LIKE ITS GETTING TO MUCH GAS and BLOWING BLACK SMOKE? if anything it should be running super lean. the air gas is set at 1.5 turns, it was at 2.5 and was still doing the same thing.

    Rocco, thanks for your videos. I have a 98 xlc883 with k&n and drilled stock mufflers. With a 42 and 160 main i think the bike is very lean. The drilled pipes have very little snap/pep and only make power when the bike is shouting loudly. The mix screw is 3.5 out and the bike still stumbles when you blip the throttle warm.
    I am in the belief a rejet to 45 and 175-180 will help, but the drag pipes are always going to rob my low end.
    Do you believe in lollipops/insert baffles or do you recommend a slip on that can help get my low end power back?

    Hey rocco,
    I have an 89 XL1200 European model. The carb doesn’t have the accelerator pump. Do you happen to know the stock jetting for these models?
    I now have a 200 main and a 38 idle jet installed. Came from a 42 where it wouldn’t come off idle nicely. The bike is completely stock. It now runs just fine, but in 4th gear at a slight uphill it coughes into the carb. At a standstill and in lower gears it runs just fine. Idle-screw is 2-1/4 turns out. Any idea how many turns I can go out before I have to use the larger pilot jet?

I haven't changed my jets yet...I'm from Canada...I saw some "Threads on google) " that say the jets are smaller(42/170)??? So should I see what sizes are on my 1200...ie: if the slow jet is 42 - go up to 45/ or right to 48? If the main jet is 170? go up 180? or right to 185 ( I have screaming eagle slip on, and just a K&N filter - no high performance breather body)Right now I get a hesitation sometime when I rev match gearing down...I love your videos...very informative...Hope this makes sense to you - you are my Guru Thanks in Advance Rocco...I really appreciate you knowledge
