This sorted my problem out! Turns out when I looked at the needle the previous owner already had put an E clip on the 3rd notch, and then a small washer, and then a really big thick washer that was the equivalent of 3 thin washers. I took all the washers off, left the clip on the 3rd notch and now it's cruises at 30mph in 3rd way better. Thanks so much for this video Rocco, really helped me out. Will be telling all my sportster riding friends to watch this and subscribe.

Happy to help. I will send a video on how to clean the carburetor. Your idle jet is clogged and that's why it Has to run on half choke. Clean the idle jet and this will run perfect. don't worry about the oil and the spark plugs clean idle jet. Ride it, let it go throw a few heat cycle and then change the oil. If it sat for any amount of time you'll have oil inside to dry sump of your motor. Run it, then change your oil, it will take a day or two of riding. To get all the oil back into the can. Sportsters oil like to be halfway on the oil dipstick. Check and clean air filter. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and your sub. Ride safe and have a great day. Take a look. ruclips.net/video/Pp4l-zbQcy0/видео.html

thought I would let you know that I finally got my Sporster going. I stripped the carb but found nothing blocked or dirty. The fuel that was in the float chamber was a dark brown in colour not even any sediment .My wife said why not put some fresh fuel in and I did and guess what it fired right away. the moral of the story is if your bike has stood for any length of time and is not starting try draining ALL fuel from tank and carburreter it worked great for me if only I had thought of it.I think you could drain carb by unscrewing the drain screw one turn located at rear of carb not a great place but at least you would get new fuel to where it is needed.British Petroleum reckon petrol that the lighter elements of the fuel evaporate within months even in a fuel tank something I did not know. Thanks again for your instructional videos and advice. Runs a lot better but just can’t seem to get this annoying cough right off idle tuned out. My 2005 XL883 runs perfectly in warm weather. In cold weather, it takes forever to warm up and also "spits" a little on take off. It idles smoothly but I wonder if adding the washers would help this. The carb is in perfect condition and clean inside because I vent the crankcase to the atmosphere - which also lowers the air temperature going into the intake, possibly increasing the problem. What are your thoughts? By the way, I recently changed the spark plugs and they looked perfect, not too lean or too rich.

Great video, I really appreciate your doing these. One thing would be handy to know is how thick those washers are. One can find all kinds of washers in a hardware store that will fit in terms of id, and od, but the thickness is the critical dimension. It wouldn't matter if you used one washer .032 thick, or two .016 thick, but if you used 4. - 032, where the plan was to use 4 - .016, it might not be so good (it would sure be rich!).

Hello Rocco, I have a 06 Sportster XL1200 it has a little over 1,400 miles on it now it had 1,200 when i bought it. The bike had been in a warehouse sitting for about 1 year. I put new fuel in it several times now. Runs great but I'm getting a spit/pop from carb sometimes from idle to mid acceleration from carb. I ordered a CV kit online. Any input from you on this problem would be highly appreciated...I did try air fuel mix...was out 3 1/4 ...I put it at 1 3/4 out...still the same...lean popping? Thanks I'll await your answer.

Hi Rocco, thanks for the video. I recently purchased my first bike it's an 06 sportster 1200. The guy I bought it from says it's cammed and has the screaming eagle exhaust. It spits from the carb randomly at steady throttle . I'm planning on jetting and doing the washers in this video. You mentioned something about the screaming eagle intake , how do I know if that's been replaced? Also since it's cammed what would you recommend as a starting point for jets and washers? Thanks ... Could it be possible you have the washers in the wrong spot? It needs to lift the needle up so that means those washes will be at the bottom. placed back in and then the spring. Has to make a difference you say no difference. Just think about that you move the needle three washers up and there's no mid range differenc, that will affect off idle a bit bit. Take a look. Some say to put it down exactly after turning on the engine no matter the time od the year, rather keep it running with holding a throttle... Once warm it will stutter a touch at about 1/4 throttle around 30mph maybe once the primary jets kick in. Rocco, for my 2001,1200 sportster I followed your washers on the needle video and how to clean your carb and decided to take it off and do a dip in Berymans carb cleaner, after I installed the carb back on, it started fist time .It ran good but this is what is going on, I did adjust the throttle cables and with the engine off the throttle works fine has a quick snap back to idle, but with the engine running the idle cable has a slow return to idle ,like a drag is holding the grip. Any ideas? I bought the washer you gave in the link.

@@TwoWheelRocco That breather bolts are meant to allow the release of gases that build up in the top end. They should have small houses that route the gases and/or oil to the air cleaner, which is then routed to the carburetor and ingested by the engine. This is an EPA requirement to prevent gases from going out to the atmosphere and polluting our air.

I gotta 2000 1200 Sportster and I'm having trouble tuning it it's got the screaming eagle package with the blue box hooked up and I'm getting a lot of intake backfires and exhaust backfires I'm thinking it's a ignition module problem or the carb is way out of adjustment,I've tried your air fuel mixture adjustments but it still backfires at low idle and at higher end backfires out exhaust this is getting frustrating

Happy to help. Did you check the petcock vacuum? I will send a video. Sounds like you're getting air in the system. Test leak in the diaphragm. the vacuum hose from the carburetor to the petcock replace that hose. that get old causing gas flow problems. This makes a very bad running motorcycle. Thank you for watching and your sub Stephen. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day. Let me know how that works out. ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.html. test and replace vacuum line they collapse, causing all sorts of problems.

@@stephengilfedder6152 if it bleeds down, it's no good plain and simple so don't expect something to operate that sucking air. This is your problem. Leaking Gas when sitting that means Fuel also is getting into the system so you got both things going on. you can never tune your bike with that condition. change the diaphragm change the vacuum hose and start off with a strong foundation. That's where I would starts, Fuel delivery. Hope this helps. Let us know how it works out.
