      I am a critic of our system, but we don’t continue to imprison people based on how the population FEELS…it is years of therapy and medication, many experts, years of small steps, I have worked in such an institution. and he would not be let out without secure plans and court ordered medication. He didn’t simply stroll away into the ether. He will be watched for the rest of his life. Not defending the system, just the way it is. Courts only focus on facts not vengeance. Living with what you have done, once on proper medication, is the worst punishment.

    • @TheWolfDucky
      @TheWolfDucky 3 года назад +42

      @@rubycollison8915 Schizophrenia isn't something that can be made up. There are forensic experts who specialize in psychosis, so it's unlikely psychosis hit him after the murder was committed. It's also important to note that schizophrenia is a brain disease with structural AND chemical differences in the brain. It's really not a choice to become psychotic. If you were to develop schizophrenia, there would be BIOLOGICAL forces that if left untreated would make you eventually believe things as crazy as Tim McAllen (delusions). Brain scans of psychotic people show that they process false sensory information (hallucinations) the same way they process reality. Also, there's an interview of the man who killed Tim online, and he seems genuinely emotionally distraught and said he cannot experience joy because of what he did. I don't think he would have killed McLean had he not been a victim of this terrible brain disease.
      On the other hand, I get the emotional response to wanting him locked up. I myself am a schizophrenic, and I've NEVER been violent or even aggressive during a psychotic episode. So I don't even fully appreciate this man being free, because violent psychosis is not something I've experienced either. It's a common misconception that most schizophrenics are violent, but violence towards others is rare. Self Harm is common however.
      Furthermore, it's not like the man who killed Tim McAllen is probably doing well even if he is not as broken from this situation as he claimed to be. Schizophrenia is more than psychosis. Its having a compressed cerebral cortex, less ability to feel pleasure, apathy, less ability to connect to others, cognitive impairment, and external and self-stigma (If you have schiz, listen to your doctor about how it affects you and not someone on youtube. Schiz. is a syndrome). I'm happy and doing well (minor case of schiz.), but my point is most schizophrenics have shitty live's and don't even work.
      It is possible that bashing NGRI people as the public often does (even including his new name in the video) contributes to that stigma, which in turn puts less emphasis on awareness and funding and therefore a cure and prevention instead of neurodegenerative anti-psychotics that only attenuate psychotic symptoms will take longer to get here... and more incidents like this will keep happening in the meantime.

      Quite honestly, I'm a pretty anxious person and I have used public transport a lot, including these horrible overland buses (that are often so full that you HAVE to sit beside someone). If somebody sits down next to me unprovoked, when there is enough space, I make an excuse to get out of my chair and I am TF out of there faster than you can say 'paranoia'. I don't ever risk it - I've seen drug users sit down opposite me who were talking to themselves. I don't wait for them to become psychotic and decide I am the great satan. I just leave.

      what people like you dont realise is you get "life" for killing 1person usually, where as dealing/smuggling drugs will kill a lot more people over time, especially if they're doing it all there life, thats a lot of drugs, a lot of kids lifes fucked because of 1 person, I personally think killing 1 person is not as bad as selling any drug other than cannabis especially selling to kids.

    • @bookcreator

      That's an interesting perspective and I hadn't thought of it that way before, but I still don't think the drug problem will be solved by going after low level dealers, who are often selling drugs to fuel their own addiction. Where there's supply, there's demand, and it's not like these drug dealers are forcing anyone to take it. But these drug laws also seriously affect those who use the drugs too, with people going to jail for large periods of time for possession. I'm not saying it's right, but I don't think it's an issue that's solved by sending people in prison like we do.

    And I thought my last experience on a long bus trip was scary 😭 I was sitting at the back of the bus on a 5hr trip, I had done this trip many many times before, to the point I knew the drivers (different drivers for different Time slots) never had anything go wrong until the last time I was on it. So I was at the very back seat, because it’s a 3 seater instead of 2 so I could kind of lay down relatively comfortabley on it. Half way through the trip a man came and sat in the seat in front of mine, I immediately felt weird because the whole bus had many many seats empty but then I just assumed maybe he had wanted the back seat and because I was laying down it may have appeared empty. Anyway, he kept turning around and peering back at me and had this super strange look on his face, creeped me out heaps and finally after 15mins I told him to stop looking at me, this made him go into a rage he started aggressively telling me it’s a free country and he can look where he wants and he started telling me that “you shouldn’t be sleeping you shouldn’t be sleeping” (I wasn’t sleeping I was just laying down with my head phones in watching RUclips) anyway I got up and went to grab my things to leave and at this point he threw a full bottle of something at my face, the bottle was glass and it really bloody hurt got me straight in the eye/nose. So an immediate reaction I punched him straight in the face (I’m a skinny small girl) and that actually managed to knock him over, that’s when I realised he was intoxicated. I was crying at the same time from shock and grabbed my things and ran to the front of the bus which was full of basically elderly people. The driver was mortified, everyone had heard the end of our encounter. All the elderly women swarmed me at the very front of the bus, and all the elderly men formed a barricade around us. There was no reception to call police until we made it to my stop and this man actually tried to hop off at my stop and the bus driver refused to let him off and told him “too bad you can get of half an hour away and make your way back if this is really where you want to go” I actually know one of the other drivers very well and a few hrs later he rang me to inform me the police were called and the man was arrested at the next stop and he is banned from that bus line and every driver has seen security footage of him. Legit I thought that was a scary experience and now I see how much worse it could have been.

      4 Julz if you seriously think they are to blame then you’ve got issues. Life isn’t some action movie and the actual sight of a real stabbing is just pure terror. It was dark and a confined space so how can you blame them for going into a state of panic as anyone would. Everyone behind a screen like you wants to believe they would be the one to jump the attacker but that’s not reality and you yourself would most likely not be a hero. The one to blame is the sick fuck who stabbed and ate a man not the innocent families who had to wake up to darkness, screaming and terror. You know how tiny the middle aisle of a bus is how on earth do you expect anyone to fight off the attacker?? Use your damn brain and have some empathy

      4 Julz having never been in that situation I can’t say what I would do with any degree of certainty and neither can you unless you’ve been in that situation. We all like to think we’d be the hero and that we’d be so brave and do anything we could but that just isn’t realistic. If it were someone I loved of course I would die for them but that is not a factor in this case since he was travelling alone. You don’t have more guts than most people, you’re just behind a screen with no grasp on the way human brains work in the midst of terror in a confined space. You are in no position to judge people by their fight or flight response when confronted with a maniac who has no mental barrier holding back their strength who also happens to be a few feet away from them in a space they can’t escape. It’s easily to speculate your response when the only material you’ve been fed on these situations is movies where the hero wins

    So this case has always been in my head since it happened. I had been taking a southbound Greyhound bus that started it’s journey in Edmonton the same day this broke on the news, when it was very few details and early stages of the incident… I was 15 and can’t remember why but I was only using wifi at the time so had to check in once I got to Calgary, no one on the bus had heard the news yet and I had no clue why Mom was freaking out so much…
    Fast forward to listening to you tell pretty much exactly what happened gave me goosebumps… especially the part where his mum was saying the prayer for the family of the victim… just heartbreaking.
    Thank you for putting in so much time and energy into researching the cases and presenting them in such a respectful way ❤

    I keep seeing a bunch of comments of people saying how horrible it was that no one helped Tim, and I agree, but I think we should have more sympathy for the people on the bus. It's like how in a shooting, no one tries to attack the shooter, they just run. Most people probably weren't even thinking. The flight or fight response is strong, and most people tend to run when horrifying things happen around them.

      In a shooting, I'm running. I've got the space to get myself out of there. In an enclosed place? I'm stepping up and doing SOMETHING. It's a small space and I've got nothing left to lose. Whose to say this guy wouldn't come after me after cutting this guy up? Help or no help, you have a 50/50 chance.

    To everyone who wonders why nobody did anything to help him, let me tell you why. A month ago, I was traveling on a Greyhound bus from Minneapolis to Ames, IA to start my semester. I usually take these busses to and from school, because its a cheap way to get back home. Usually there are some shady people on the bus, but most of the time people are pleasant or minding their own business. Since COVID is happening, everyone had to sit spread out, so I was actually the one in back of everyone. We had passed the halfway rest area and made it a little way into Iowa, when I started hearing a man raising his voice for short bits. I had my headphones in, so I thought nothing of it really; I like to stay out of other people's business as much as possible. Like 10 minutes later, a man one seat behind him and kitty corner to me on my right, taps on the man's seat and asks if he's doing alright, and I swear right away the guy snaps his head back to glare at him. His eyes had this enraged but slightly out of control and helpless look, it kind of reminds me of that photo of Saddam Hussain as a boy. The guy then gets up, stands in the eisle in front of the other guys seat and yells at him from the back of his throat that he has the powers of God, and the man who spoke to him was a demon, and he wanted to "Punch him in the face." The other man actually acted very calm and just sat back and stared the guy in the eye.
    I obviously did my best not to make eye contact or make the crazy guy notice me, but when I noticed I was the only one in back of these guys I started panicking in my head and thinking of what I could possibly do. I had seen another video on this case before, and it was in the back of my mind the whole time. Luckily, he was pretty skinny like a crack head, and I'm a pretty tall and moderately strong woman, so I knew in the back of my mind that I would probably be able to defend myself enough to escape if I had to. It also didn't look like he has any noticeable weapon. I was mainly worried, because I had just had an amazing 2 months with my family, and I didn't want them to worry. I still haven't told them.
    Luckily, he was lazer focused on this other dude, calling him a demon and threatening him, and he didn't even look at me. There were too bus drivers on the trip, and one of them came back about a minute or two later and held on to the crazy guy, while the other bus driver pulled over and called the police. The drivers talked the guy down, and one sat back there with him. The only problem was, that they sat him right behind me, because that was the only spot. I was a bit worried he could reach over and choke me out, but he never seemed to know I existed. Its like his brain was completely focused on this one guy. After about 10 minutes, we stopped at the Mason City Airport, which is a common stop, only this time the bus waited for the cops to show up. After the bus drivers got off, I moved up about 5 seats to get away. They escorted off the bus, where thankfully he didn't make a scene. They sat him outside in the cold and it looked like they were trying to get through to him, all while he had this blank expression on his face. After about 10 minutes he started screaming again, so police put him in the squad car, and our bus left.
    It was so weird, and really opened my eyes to how I would actually react in stressful situations. I'm so thankful it didn't get violent, because I would probably have nightmares. Anyway sorry for the novel, but that's how it went down. I'll never sit in the back again. I truly feel bad for this man and everyone on board that day.

    Ohhhhhhh as soon as you started this one I knew EXACTLY which case this was. I’m in Ontario, Canada (near Toronto!), and this case just rocked our whole country. It was so scary. He is so mentally ill and there’s so much controversy over this case. Many still think he should have went to jail for this. And many agreed he should be in a facility getting mental help. However, I think most would agree he should not be out in public and it’s very upsetting that he is. I feel so sorry for Tim’s family but also for the Officer who took his own life. What those witnesses and officers saw, you can’t un-see. Thanks for sharing Eleanor!!

      I don’t think the police could have done more without risking more than they wanted to, and tbh I put their lives before a body and people’s wish to get it over and done with. They are the brave people who deal with situations we don’t want to, so I’m not gonna sit here and diss them. One of them commit suicide, I mean what more do people need to understand they are only human and should indeed hold the right to only enter a situation when they know it will work

    • @kerrypolson2207
      @kerrypolson2207 5 лет назад +10

      GamerTwig they were armed and had stun guns. When they actually used the stun guns the situation ended almost immediately. I respect their right to assess a situation and determine if it’s safe, but given how armed they were I don’t understand why they held back.
      British police are hardly ever armed and are expected to tackle difficult situations or call for the armed unit for back up. My point being, in this case they were armed but they didn’t engage

    • @gamertwig3909
      @gamertwig3909 5 лет назад +1

      Thegirlwiththewierdname 2 I know what you mean but it wasn't like they were just entering a bus that had some mad chav in it, he did something extremely horrific and he was unpredictable, they'd be wrong to enter without at least one hour to observe him, and if they needed more then ok. They are going into a confined space and they need to take time to see if he has more weapons, does he have patterns of behaviour, what is his body language, what is he doing, does he have a plan? They need to make sure he is all he seemed and was, not just assume it and be at risk of reading the situation wrong. I do get peoples point but it was such an odd situation,you couldn't write it! So I don't expect them to react perfectly because even with all the training in the world, they are just people with families doing a job and they wanna go home after

      Alot of times its called the bystander effect. No one acts because they think someone else will. With this it could have been that along with the shock and fear of seeing that happening out of no where on a bus. Instinct could have kick in and at that point its gonna probably go straight to self preservation.

    • @cookiemonster6897
      @cookiemonster6897 5 лет назад +11

      daniella m I also thought that, but you also have to think about everyone being so shocked and thinking about getting themselves out before helping, also, from the discerption of the murder, I think people didn’t think he’d make it out alive since he was being stabbed repeatedly and without the attacker stopping, so it might have been more important to get people out of the bus than helping him.
      But at the end the only people who could answer are the passengers, hell I even can’t tell how I’d react in a situation like that, so I don’t know how much we can pass judgment onto them, even if we know that we’d never live throughout the guilt.

      There is this natural phenomenon that happens to people in groups in an emergency. People don't help others in a crowd. You are much more likely to be helped in small groups then in a larger group like on the bus.

      That was my first thought too and it's easy to be frustrated but obviously you NEVER know what you would do in that situation, ever. If someone would've tried to stop him while Tim was still alive without a weapon they probably would've gotten severely hurt or could've died as well. And honestly when Tim was already dead and they did have a weapon they could've easily been in shock because the man WAS LITERALLY beheading him and I think it's a good thing and a miracle they could think clearly enough in that situation to barricade him in. So sad :(

    Just discovered your channel and this story, but related (scary as hell) anecdote: So I worked at a Subway sandwich shop in Portage la Prairie in Manitoba. In late March/early April of 2017 a tall heavyset Asian man named Billy came in to apply for a job. I was a supervisor and heard about it from another employee as I came in later in the day to close. I was told he could not speak English or French with any level of clarity but his application was on the time desk. The communication would have disqualified him from employment but I checked it out anyway and his name was listed as Will Lee Baker. About 2 weeks later I saw a tv story about this guy Vince li changing his name to Will Baker. They were running a series of stories on tv about him because he was granted full discharge in Feb of that year. The name made me instantly think of the applicant so I called that employee and told her to look up vince li and she said it was him. She quit that day, I gave my notice the following day. He never called or came back in to check on the job. I never met him but I am still uneasy about it, I message often with my old co-worker over social media. She is still completely horrified from it.

    • @elizabethlasserre3920

      Being someone who takes these types of busses regularly, it is scary to think about. I mean, the first time i got on a bus after hearing about this case, a man I didn't know came and sat next to me. At some point during the trip he began muttering something in a different language. I politely asked him if everything was alright in a language i thought he might understand and he talked to me for a bit then stopped muttering. Even though I was on the lookout the entire time, everything turned out fine. I think he was just doing some kind of prayer.
      I can't even imagine what Tim and everyone on the bus must have felt in the ultimate moment, and i truly feel for them. However, i do believe that the people who noticed the guy swinging back and forth and chanting should've at least tried to talk to him to try and see if he was okay (because it's clearly not a normal behaviour -- plus the guy could've been autistic or something and needing help) and, if no response, tried to ask the bus driver to stop.

    I know many will disagree with me but I think the system failed everyone in this situation. They failed Tim, every witness, and Will.
    Had Will gotten proper care from a young age, this could've been prevented. But somehow someone with such severe signs of psychological issues was never noticed by authorities. The fact they didn't hold him accountable whatsoever, and didn't give him a criminal record, says a lot about how loosely they're treating mental illness in general. I think Will's name should be public so we can be on the look out, but I also think we should be looking at the system if anything and make sure it changes for the better. That's the only way we can prevent this from happening again.
