Behold the power of Pentatonix - their ability to get you to like a song you were tired of or just didn't think was your style. And, yes the different looks is a Mitch thing. And Kirstie too. It's just one of the many things that go into making them so beloved.
For so many folks claiming to love lots of iterations of this song, quite a few can't seem to grasp the fact that THIS IS NOT A RELIGIOUS OR CHRISTIAN SONG JUST BC OF THE TITLE!!
Leonard Cohen, the song's writer, said that the Pentatonix version of his song was the best rendition he had ever heard. That would be like Dylan saying that the Janice Joplin version of Big Yellow Taxi was the best version ever done (which would be true).
Did you not notice that in almost EVERY song each member has a verse or part that is specifically best for each member? Kevin even sings, sometimes while playing the Cello. "Say Something" at the end or "Mary Did You Know" or "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You" and "Imagine" he has his solo part. More recently, "The Prayer", "I Just Called To Say I Love You" and a surprise with "Amazing Grace." You know their names so you have heard them before. They also rap "Can't Hold Us" to winning another Grammy with Dolly Parton in "Jolene" Since this is February Christmas is over, but if you watch their "O Come All Ye Faithful" you can see Kevin's influence to honor his parents with an African vibe. They also have a "90's Dance Melody" and their outfits match the era.
They can all sing and they all have different ranges. As you go through more Pentatonix music (covers and originals) you will hear Avi and Kevin singing on many of them.🙂
Avi can not just sing (for me he has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard) he is also an amazing songwriter and Musician. You should check out his solo stuff 👍👍👍
It's not Christian...really. Written by Leonard Cohen...a Jew. It's a beautiful contemplation on what "Hallelujah" means to each of us. What is your "Hallelujah"?? It's a big word...and not just Christian.
@@michaelbowman4607 hallelujah means "god be praised"...jehovah is one name for the Christian god, but that doesn't mean Jehovah is the only god or for that matter, it doesn't mean Jehovah is the only god that people praise 🤷🏻♀️ hallelujah belongs to everyone & their gods. Even when this song isn't your cup of tea, you gave it much respect because you know the level of talent PTX has. I thank you! This was filmed in the Mojave Desert in Ca. Mitch went through an evolution in style finding what fit him. I think he's landed on a consistent public look these days, but he's a whole different character as Messer. He's complicated. Thank you for a great reaction!
If you want more Avi singing I would check out Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, and check out his solo song 'Change Is On The Rise' Also, to get around some of the copywrite issues, I have seen other reactors make the video smaller, fade it out some and or include other filters over to slightly distort the image as it seems it is the image that gets the most of the copywrite issue - also people put big letters over the video or a logo to block it out some
You definitely need to Avi's solo work OR this song with Peter Holland "Black is the Color of my True Loves Kiss" if you want to hear him sing super low but ohhhhhh so smooth!
I LOVE that "Black Is Color of My True Love'sHair" cover. The layered combination of those two voices just feels so pleasing. I always describe Avi's voice as chocolate velvet. I don't know what that means, but it just sounds right lol...
Mitch is a master of disguise!!! Joking, but yeah he does manage to look different a lot depending on the year, hair length and hair colour..or no hair ( check out their vid of Jolene with Dolly Parton, or their cover of Perfume). I think this was the Mojave Desert and they wore jackets even though it was 100F that day, because they wanted to include the song in their Christmas album. They must have been sweating awfully under those coats. It's also not actually a Christian song. Leonard Cohen wrote it about love, loss and betrayal, and used some biblical references in it ( David and Bathsheba, Samson and Delilah).
Whoa! You hadn't done this yet?! Yeah----not a "Christian" song per se, just some biblical references, and a lot of the pain of love. Ah, we always know that it's Mitch. . . no matter what hair he has or doesn't have. When Avi is singing Scott does the bass line. Go listen to Avi's solo work RIGHT NOW. "Change on the Rise" is a get-up-and-fight anthem.
For many of us, this rendition of this song was our first exposure to Pentatonix, and our first Mitch slap. It's also the best rendition of "Hallelujah" I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot. Those are two of the reasons you've been getting so many requests for it. Mitch and Kirstin both change appearance frequently. Sometimes I think Kirstie changes her hair color on a daily basis. Mitch has gone from black haired to blond to purple back to black. His hairstyles range from a mullet to bangs that constantly tried to fall in his eyes to a shaved head. Facial hair ranges from clean shaven to a mustache to a mustache and a beard. And his weight has been extremely variable. In *this* video, the primary thing that distinguishes him is his hat, and I believe that was selected specifically so it could block out the sun setting behind them; I haven't seen it in any other videos. I don't believe Mitch was trying to disguise himself; this was filmed in 2017, which would make Mitch 24 or 25 years old (depending on when they filmed it), still a young adult (and Mitch's young adulthood has been stranger than most). At the time, Mitch was the youngest member of Pentatonix. He was still trying to come to terms with the bullying he received in high school over how high his voice was, contrasted with the acclaim he's received since for exactly the same thing, which would leave anyone feeling discombobulated - combine that with the difficulty of meeting new people in a casual setting when you're a celebrity, which severely limits one's potential romantic encounters, and I think Mitch was just trying to figure out what his personal style is. He may have decided that his "personal style" is whatever he feels like on any given day, which is a legitimate choice. The location was the Mojave Desert, just outside of Barstow, California. I don't know when it was shot, or what the weather was like except that it obviously wasn't raining or snowing.
It was shot in August, and they were blazing hot. They were bundled up, in hundred degree heat, because this was recorded for the Christmas album There's a Superfruit of Scott shaving Mitch's hair off, which I believe was done relatively close to this shoot, hence bald Mitch underneath that hat. Though, I could be wrong about that timing. But, that is a terrific Superfruit to watch 🤣
I'm with you, I've never been a fan of Hallelujah the song. It's been so grossly overplayed that I turn it off when it comes on the radio. BUT...I love this version and will listen to it all day long. I love picking out Avi's' part when he goes extra low in contrast to Mitch's highest parts.
They're covers of Problem, sing, amazing grace, carol of the bells, new rules/are you that somebody, somebody that i used to know, radioactive, blinding lights.. so so many to watch
Great Reaction! If you want to be even more amazed, react to their LIVE version of "Hallelujah" from the televised Christmas Special that they did about the same time they release the music video. It is proof that their live performances are almost identical to the studio versions of their songs. I enjoy watching your reaction videos and I look forward to seeing more!
So you like Avi? Time for Change on the Rise, b/,w video of I'm only getting started. Just as important are All is well 7 layer sessions and When I'm a fool live at Sunset Sound. It's a jam session. I've subscribed so let's go!
The man who did the original rendition of this song (Leonard Cohen) before his death said in an interview that *this* version of his song was by far the best he had ever heard done - and there have been *plenty* of great artists who have made this song their own in some way. 💌
OMG A BACKSTREET BOYS REFERENCE! Fun fact: they actually started as an acapella group! For the record, Kevin (and Howie if we’re talking underrated) actually sings much more often than you’d think. The more you listen to them you’ll start to notice who shines where in songs because their voices are so different. It’s what, I think, makes them stand a league outside of NSync since they all get their moments that play to their strengths.
Avi ALWAYS sang. And now Matt that replaced Avi as the main Bass singer always sings. It is the Beatboxer Kevin that doesn't usually sing but does at times. And yes, Mitch and at times Kirsty changes looks. Some have even seen Kirsty with her brunette hair and THOUGHT it was a different woman in the group. 👗👗👠👠💓💓

@@sharonsmith5296 I've read that, too, but I'm not sure if it's the full story and Penta-lore gets passed around very easily. I can't imagine why they would be wearing coats if it was 100 degrees. I agree with you about this song as far as it's not on my playlist either, because it's kind of a sad and depressing song, very pessimistic about love, not happy and def not Christmas-y one little bit. However, Avi and Mitch drew me into this version.
"Guys, Avi is singing" - well, DUH! They are ALL singing, even if it isn't always with words. That's what a capella groups do. Even Kevin sings when he isn't beat-boxing. There is no weak link in this group.
BTW...Avi is a classically trained basso profundo ( the lowest voice in opera). They are all exceptional. Unfortunately Avi left (his mother had cancer.) Matt Sallee took over and has done an amazing job. You have been " Mitch slapped"!
I just wish they had given Avi and Kevin more mice time they both have amazing voices and they do sing in some songs like this one but it would have been nice to hear more with them taking lead
Both Mitch & Kirstin change their looks dramatically from video to video. The amazing voices never change though. Sadly, Avi has left the group, however his replacement, Matt, also sings beautifully. I love this one so much, but 'Mary did you know?' is still my favorite... and Kevin sings in that one as well & I have also noticed that he wears leather jackets a lot, probably for the sound.

Yes, Mitch usually looks very different in many videos. He has said that he does not get recognized in Target.
I just love it that even people who are peripherally acquainted with Pentatonix are still blown away by their skill and talent! Great reaction!
... before we get our feelings touched 🤣🔥
that part
Yes, Avi can sing. Did you notice that the bass continued while he was singing? They did this video a few miles east of Barstow, California.
“..before we get our feelings touched,” made me LOL.🤣 Thanks for that moment of levity. And thanks for a fun reaction!

It's a word that translates to "Praise Jehovah", the God of the Bible, and a unique name that applies to no other.

I mean it is absolutely sang in Christian churches as a gospel song.
