I commented last time to mention that the song was originally written and performed by folk singer Lori Lieberman, she was inspired after seeing Don McLean in concert. It was later covered by Roberta Flack and finally made hugely popular worldwide by the Fugees. All three versions are beautiful but I've got to say that Lauryn's vocal hits me in the gut harder than the others .
@@rochellelove3785 To be fair, after Lori released her version everyone covered it; Johnny Mathis, Perry Cuomo, Shirley Bassey, Bobby Goldsboro, Vicki Lawrence, Ann Murray, Petula Clark, Engelbert Humperdink, and on and on. It seemed that anyone wanting a good song for their album recorded it and released it. Of those Roberta Flack got the commercial success with it. Lori was screwed out of her writing credit so royalties were problematic. Roberta recorded another version almost 8 years later with Peabo Bryson that got a little play. A few years after that Al B Sure released his version on In Effect Mode and also enjoyed some commercial success. Meanwhile Lori has been so hosed by the industry that she retires and basically distances herself from the song. So the Fugees released their version and everyone 'discovers' this gem of a song... Honest question here, why does everyone like this version so much? There is really nothing original in it. The beat is sample from A Tribe Called Quest, none of the vocal ornamentation are new, no new key changes, no new emotives, no new lyrics... honestly Lauren Hill is beautiful as is her voice... but that's kind of it... Maybe I'm just biased. My. Choice versions are Lori's folk version, Roberta's soulful version, and Am B Sure's r&b/ hip hop version. Anyone have any thoughts here? What am I missing?
I agree about wyclef in there. It was unneeded. He just wanted to be on the track lol. Its kinda reminiscent of puffy talking softly over songs where it was not needed and in fact takes away from the song. Not as bad.. but close.
I was 14-15 when I got this album, this was my first proper introduction to hip hop. The Score was so good, quite often you get one or two hits, but this was good through and through. I used to listen to it all the time. And Lauryn Hill to me was some sort of goddess.

Lauryn has always been in my top favorite vocalists. Would have been fun to see you guys do a comparison reaction to both versions?
Love seeing you and your dad bond with the love of music
Absolutely love the reaction! You definitely have to react to the full album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” it’s such a masterpiece!
Y’all channel has a gang of potential…pop can expose u to music u never heard before too. Stay wit it.
As soon as I saw this I knew his dad was gonna be dramatic about this one 😂😂
Since 96!! This song still gives me chillis..Lauren Voice.. is Amazing ❤❤❤
Have you guys ever considered reversing this and having you react to songs that your Dad picks?
Fr the son can review the OG version
I'd love that too...now that would be my era :)
Awesome father and son relationship!!! I think ur dad would love some her songs from her unplugged album for sure!!!
If you guys havent done so already, you may want to consider her song "Zion" from the Miseducation of Lauren Hill
💜I love this song so much. My daughter now loves this song. She asks to play it everyday.💜
I would love to see your dad react to something by Wyclef. He is an underrated producer.
I love watching you and your dad!! I think it's wonderful that you're both open to everything the same way I was raised. From beegees, Isley's, earth wind and fire, to the 90s rap I grew up with to listening to Nirvana, evanescence, and Linkin park. It's a beautiful thing ❤️
Lauryn Hill best female artist of all time. Glad to say I group up in this era of music 😎
Literally!! 🔥
Definitely up there! Other favourites of mine include Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Lianne La Havas, Nico, and Sarah Bonito. Thanks for watching ✌🏻
One of the best artists period ;)
That thing that you feel in her voice from the first note that you can’t describe is - Soul.
Al B Sure did a cover also before the Fugees.
You guys are amazing, I love how your dad feel that energies and emotions of our music… music is strong and that’s beautiful ♥️
You and your dad should review Lauren Hill’s “To Zion” ft. Carlos Santana. A song written for her son.
I just bloody love your dad. And I totally agree with his comments on the adlibs.
I agree about wyclef in there. It was unneeded. He just wanted to be on the track lol.
Its kinda reminiscent of puffy talking softly over songs where it was not needed and in fact takes away from the song. Not as bad.. but close.
You two share such an intimate connection, each willing to be vulnerable, feel, learn and share TOGETHER.
And Roberta Flack’s son, Bernard Wright, one of the most seminal sampled artists in Hip Hop, recently died. R.I.P.
I was 14-15 when I got this album, this was my first proper introduction to hip hop. The Score was so good, quite often you get one or two hits, but this was good through and through. I used to listen to it all the time. And Lauryn Hill to me was some sort of goddess.
Please listen to Lauryn Hill "Doo Wop". GREAT message and shows off both her rapping and singing skills ❤️
I grew up on this music. 1996 was an epic year for hip hop & R&B. I am absolutely loving your dad’s reactions and the commentary on these songs, along with the discussions. Really cool, guys. I look forward to future vids.
