I'm so happy I stumbled across this video. My hair has been super dry to the point where I have scalp acne...I think the silk bonnet, heat cap and water spritz (morning & night) are going to make a huge difference. I'm so glad that RUclips provides this avenue to share our journey with each other.
I have been following your site for about a year now and you are hands down THE BEST Natural Hair Professor on RUclips. Thank you for all of your teachings.
@chikajm the back part is more dry because we sleep on it. our hair rubbing against a cotton pillowcase dries the hair out and causes knots/tangles. the combination of dryness and tangles is what causes breakage the KEY is to keep the hair moisturized and use a protective style to keep it from tangling . for example 2 simple braids or stretching it in a pineapple/high ponytail to keep it from tangling and a bonnet /satin pillowcase to reduce moisture loss ~ good luck !
I about to sew an old satin cap into one of my winter (cotton) caps. I'm learning Syracuse is no joke in the winter...They are scoffing at the blizzard in the NYC as just another day...I gotta get my daily protection game up. Thanks for the confirmation. I water my hair am & pm also. It is probably what has helped me maintain in Central New York. Great job!
I am sooo happy I found your channel. I was just asking this question yesterday on my FB page....now it just so happens I came across you vid for dryness....OMG. How lucky am I.
@chikajm the back part is more dry because we sleep on it. our hair rubbing against a cotton pillowcase dries the hair out and causes knots/tangles. the combination of dryness and tangles is what causes breakage the KEY is to keep the hair moisturized and use a protective style to keep it from tangling . for example 2 simple braids or stretching it in a pineapple/high ponytail to keep it from tangling and a bonnet /satin pillowcase to reduce moisture loss ~ good luck ! coconut oil / shea butter
I luv your tutorials on hair. I've been natural for awhile now and it wasn't getting the moister or the style other than afro. I had done dread locks before, but didn't want to be trapped in that all, I like change. I've shown you to my girls also who are also natural. And last but not least I've added you to my playlist to have long black hair. Keep-up the good work. Thanks
I really needed to hear this. It's little details like this that makes all the difference in understanding hair. Our hair is NATURALLY dry. Wow. And here I was stressing for over a year because I felt like nothing kept it moisturized. Well duh! All I have to do is REmoisturize. Honestly, I don't even see the point in adding a sealant that adds build-up to the hair when all I need to do is wear a plastic cap to give it that "steamer treatment" effect everyday. :)
Hi I really like Naptural. she's very encouraging and motivating. I was becoming discourage with going natural for the past few weeks. I began to feel like its to much work and not attractive. After watching Naptural's video I am ready to learn and enjoy the process
I have the same pack of 100 caps from Sally's. When you whipped that out I was like, "Naptural's been raiding my bathroom!" I love to use them overnight for extra moisture too. It's been a lifesaver for keeping my hair moisturized.
OMG! You do what I do with the heating caps, LOL. People think I'm crazy when I tell them I sleep in these heating caps. They're great at sealing in moisture and when I wake up in the morning my hair is soft, moisturized and ready to go! Luv your vids! We're hair twins;o)
Thank you so much! You are a godsend. I transitioned to natural hair in the early 2000 and I had locs for 7 years. I cut my locs 4 years ago and now trying out different methods to retain moisture in natural etc. I enjoy your videos.
For me using a stocking cap on damp hair is great! I have always used them even years ago when I had permed hair. It holds moisture in better than ANYTHING I've ever tried. The down side of that is that it can hold in moisture you don't want (like if you're setting a twist out). It never pulls out a strand of hair and it's allowed my hair to grow beautifully in both permed and natural states. I also used them to grow out my fiance's hair back when I was braiding it.
I think I've fallen in love. You & that mane of yours are simply amazing!!! Although I've had a growing itch to reshape my "organic" tresses N2 a hawk, after watching just a few of your VIDs, I'm inspired & motivated to train, revive, restrengthen these silvery locs of mine. In a nutshell, you're a Godsend & have moved this 40+ chica to get going again. Lotsa Love, Joy & Peace in 2014 to you & your beautiful family!
Thank Ya!!! (Church Lady Shout) This is my first winter natural and it has been below freezing for the past 2 weeks! I am having a dryness-911. Doing this tonight. I have been learning from you for 1.5 hours...Thank Ya!!!
Thank you so so so much! you helping a lot. This is the only thing I was looking for a month now. I leave in Buffalo where the weather is always very cold and dry and I never now how to take care of my new natural hair (just going natural a year ago). you know what? you are the best. God bless you. I love you
Yes it's getting to the hair, the oils or butter that you're using doesn't remain on your hair, it can be absorbed by the hair itself, heat - whatever, you don't even have to wet it (it's up to you personally) you can just spray it.
argan, glycerine, grapeseed, smell free castor and almond.I find that Shea and olive carry a slight smell, so i tend to use those separately to seal the ends.Hope that helps.
This shows my age. Where you say heat cap I would have called it a curl or jerry-curl cap. Most remember jerry-curls, but few will own up to having one...
@@SimplyNieccee I've had the Jeri curl and thereally was another curl that the dry curl.... Wave nouveau, I think that was the name of it. The Jeri curl made my hair grow like crazy
Just went natural a little over a month ago. I have very dry hair. This is very good information. Will include in my daily regimen. Thank you for sharing.
I always put a few drops of tea tree oil mixed with some olive oil in my hair. Makes it super shiny and keeps it moist. Spray a little water on it beforehand and voila!
I love all of your videos! I think you are doing a wonderful thing by showing people how to maintain natural hair. I am a natural from Boston MA and I love every second of being one, I used to hot comb and curl my natural hair all the time like you and it was very long BUT thin :-( . Fortunately for me, I didn't have to go the "big chop" to my hair to start off. Now it is growing very nice and I'm loving the natural curliness of my hair. I just wanted to say keep up the great work and make more helpful videos for us ladies to see. I'll keep liking them all!!! 👏✊✊✌️
Great info, nicely put. Adding to what you said you can't care for lovely poodle's fur the way you care for a lovely collie's fur both are prized and adored dogs. Also because water has many different mixed perscription remnants, human waste, debris that are then treated with toxic chemicals the inequality of that water is robbing the complete beauty of water can do. As a licensed skin specialist I recommend investing in a good faucet filter, filtering water pitcher as well as shower filter. Ultimately if its affordable get a whole house filtering system. Buy in your order of importance for you and your family. You know hydration begins from the inside-out. Your skin is the largest organ so the importance of quality water is essential. If you viewed the presentation I saw on how cloudy, murky water can turn CLEAR with only a few drops of chemicals you wouldn't go near tap water. What you can't see can still harm/kill you!!!
Off topic but that shirt or dress looks cute. Wish we could see more off it. Love the helpful tips. I'm with you on putting water on my hair EVERY day.
Butters are an option too; sometimes hair doesn't do well with oil (mine doesn't, shea butter has worked well). Also be careful with whatever method you use to straighten, deep conditioner regularly, and stay away from sulfates. My hair changed so much after I stopped using shampoos and DCing, it was MUCH better moisturized.
Yesterday, i came across this video and i wasn't too sure. Wetting my hair at night and covering it with a heat cap to bed?? So confusing!!!!!!. However, i tried it last night and Lord! My hair is sooooooo soft! :D Thank you!!!!!!!!
Great video! I have also found that using RAIN water is great for shampooing or no pooing your hair. I bought a rain barrel and i sit it outside it works great!
Thank you so much for these helpful tips, I new at caring for my natural hair and like things simple. I really like the plastic cap tip, will be getting some this week-end.
I've tried this several times, but it seems to dry my hair right after the water dries, which is damaging. Sooo I make sure that I'm hydrated by drinking the proper amount of water daily. I also use Castor Oil, which has worked wonders and use a silk scarf.
this may be a little hood, but i use the grocery store bags as my heat caps...same effect, save money. I have to buy groceries anyway, and i always have an abundance of bags, so i deep condition or mist and cover and put an knot in the back so it will stay in place...cover with bonnet and viola! same results :) recycle reduce reuse...
You're my new Favourite!! Girl you say it all...!!! I watched for more than hrs your videos and I completely fell in Love them!!! Your Tutorials are really really helping me and I love your Homade Mixtures! love it
Me too! I was totally freakin over my hair cuz it's been drier than normal and when she said that I had a "light-bulb" moment. But I think adding oils (or whatever sealant) is still good to do probably every 2-3 days. That way the buildup isn't AS fast and your hair will be clean when you (co)wash every 7-10 days or so.
Everything you said is soo true. I live on the west coast in WA State and this is my first winter natural so I've been doing all of these same things. Good to know I'm on track, Thanks for your videos! =)
@sheenafly A lot of people use shampoos that are too drying for their hair. But I don't think leaving your hair unwashed for long periods of time is a good idea. Heavy products, sweat and oil will build up on your scalp and can clog up your hair follicles and cause excessive shedding. Plus, if your hair isn't cleaned and moisturized regularly it will dry out which will eventually lead to breakage. I usually use a light conditioner or a cleansing conditioner to wash my hair.
Thank you for this. The top section of my hair is the driest and it is always so frizzy. The rest of my hair is really curly and defined. I love all your videos, and like so obsessed with your beautiful fam!!! lol
Lady Dinah I find this to be true for my hair too. But it turns out the top of my hair is a lot shorter, so it dries quicker and frizzier during manipulation. Though I am trying to grow it out a bit, the best solution in the meantime I've found was giving it extra moisture and oiling/sealing section from root to tip, then gelling with an elongating, curl defining gel individual of rest of hair. Seems to be working, especially as I do a lot of wash and go styles.
An alternative for the shower cap is just to simply wrap a plastic bag (grocery bag) around the head. The two handles make it easy to tie on top of your hair, and it's big enough to hold a lot of hair!
Your videos are wonderful !! You are great with answering questions that I have as I'm looking at the videos. Thanks for you informative videos. They are helping me maintain my twa as of May of this year. I'm trying new things and learning as much as I can about maintaining healthy hair. A million thanks !!
I really appreciate your tips. I already started withthe pastic caps and it is like a miracle for my hair!! Turns it so soft i can't keep my hands out of it! lol!
I really like your hairstyle in this video! I think it's just a headband/ponytail holder sort of pulling it back (without pulling it of course) and a headband for decoration. I want to try it!
Great tips/vid! I already use those plastic caps when working out at the gym and in the steam/sauna room...every time I go! OMG...the moisture is crazy!
I love this video very detailed and helpful, my hair stay dry. My plan is to try your tips and continue to keep my hair Moisturize and yes water has been my best friend as far as moisture since I have been natural.
Great tips!!! I use Rose Water everyday...I really like it :) Great tip with the plastic caps. Just like when people have curls...never thought of it. You rock!
Yes, your hair is great! Very encouraging and clear video. Keep up the great work. And Yes, your hair looks great! Love your clear and understanding videos. Keep up the great job!
Thanks. cause ya know I have been freakin out about my dry hair. I have been natural for one year. You are so right because yes some days my hair has moisture and some days it is so dry. I began to wonder was it something I was doing wrong. Well, it is comforting to know that's how our hair is "naturally". I just hate that it's super dry when I awake. I sleep with a satin bonnet AND a satin pillowcase. (just in case my bonnet slips off) :) Thanks again.
Hey Naptural 85, I looooove your videos I'm a new subsrciber Yay for me!!!! I''m learning so from you, I love ur hair it's always so well moisturized...... Keep umm coming gurl, in Happy Holidays to u.......
I sleep in a plastic cap and satin bonnet every single night. That seems to be the only way I can combat this cold weather that sucks the moisture out of my hair. I usually have two strand twists or fro so it doesn't mess up my style :)
such an informative video the weather is changing here and you are the 1st subbie I thought of and as usual you never surprise me,,,, I just love your hair and videos thanks
Hm. Maybe always use a leave in conditioner after washing, and follow with the oil. Also that oil has like a zillion different ingredients and they might be canceling each other out. For example, it has both castor and olive oils, and when you combine those two you have to be careful because castor (from the castor bean) is naturally more drying and the olive (from olives of course :) ) is naturally more moisturizing. I would try just one oil, maybe olive to start because castor is really thick
Great information especially during this season. You always give useful and helpful tips. Keep doing what you are doing. We love it!!! :) I hope you had a Merry Christmas and I wish you a blessed and prosperous New Year.
@winiver77 Hey! From what I heard (and what I know from experience) water makes your hair feel less dry and makes it softer. Water makes your hair feel soft because it penetrates your hair shaft adding moisture to your hair.
Today . . . Yesterday . . . possibly ever since I started this I have been looking for ways to keep my hair moist . Nothing ever seemed to work besides water . But its winter and I'm like going places with wet hair and a tangled fro makes me want to run and hide in my room . I have had a break down today . As well as yesterday morning because I tried too many things to try to keep moisture . I am going to try this . Thank you .
You know, my hair loves moisture, but spritzing water is a no go for me. It likes the moisture, but just plain water even as a refresher is just not happening with my hair. It tends to just make it more dryer, or make it dry out faster. Maybe because right now I am approaching the in between stage, too long to be TWA anymore, but too short to be anything else . . . But I have to wet my hair in the shower, properly moisturize, and go. If it dries out during the day, then the process will either have to be started over again, or I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to moisturize it again. Spritzing water just doesn't happen for me. I wish it did.
you can also use a deep moisturizing mask as a leave in conditioner. my hair dries out very easily and I tend to do a deep leave in conditioner about once a week and normal deep conditioning once a week. sometimes your hair can also be protein sensitive and you can be blocking out moisture with too much protein in your hair products.
I now do the LOC method. I used to wet my hair, put my leave in in, then seal it with an oil and go, but since my hair has gotten much longer I do the LOC method in order, Leave In, Oil, then a styling cream. My hair stays moisturized and soft, especially if I French braid it back after moisturizing.
she has been natural for years you should direct your friend to her. She has some of the best natural hair advice plus DIY. She is awesome. How is it going for her I am sure good thats why she said it. It has been working great for me too. Everything isn't for everybody. Have a good one.
Funny, this was many years ago & U have the rose water bottle that I just came back across so many year after not using it, because I really didn't like the smell of rose, but now I love the stuff Fo Real... 👍🏽
Im on the East coast too and right now my hair isss DRY! It has oil but the ends especially are brittle. I stay protective styling. So I'm going to try this. Thanks for the tip

I love this video very detailed and helpful, my hair stay dry. My plan is to try your tips and continue to keep my hair Moisturize and yes water has been my best friend as far as moisture since I have been natural.
I love those processing caps. I like to keep using one until it gets worn out then use a new one.
@MoniMeka for hard water you can always take bottled spring water, throw it into a water bottle and spray your hair down after washing
Great tips!!! I use Rose Water everyday...I really like it :) Great tip with the plastic caps. Just like when people have curls...never thought of it. You rock!

Lady, you are the bomb. I absolutely love your information. You are professional and knowledgeable. Thanks.
Great tips, I would have never thought to sit around the house with a plastic cap on, I'll be trying this soon! Thanks!
Thanks. cause ya know I have been freakin out about my dry hair.
Thanks for the tip. I have tons of those caps and I could bag my head while I'm doing nothing at home. I didn't even think of that.
Yours the best.. Thanks for the great email and thanks for the video. I am so glad you are here to help!!!
I sleep in a plastic cap and satin bonnet every single night. That seems to be the only way I can combat this cold weather that sucks the moisture out of my hair. I usually have two strand twists or fro so it doesn't mess up my style :)
such an informative video the weather is changing here and you are the 1st subbie I thought of and as usual you never surprise me,,,, I just love your hair and videos
thanks
Seriously! In 2020 you changed a lot!!🙉🙊🙈 so amazing!😉
Most important is to keep ends moisturized. TY!
Thanks for sharing that Rosewater isn't necessary...Great vid!
Great information especially during this season. You always give useful and helpful tips. Keep doing what you are doing. We love it!!! :)
I hope you had a Merry Christmas and I wish you a blessed and prosperous New Year.
@winiver77 Hey! From what I heard (and what I know from experience) water makes your hair feel less dry and makes it softer. Water makes your hair feel soft because it penetrates your hair shaft adding moisture to your hair.
I love all your hair techniques!! My hair definitely needs a brake from stratening and your techniques have already shown improvement!!!
Thanks for the awesome tips! Your hair always looks so moisturized, love that puff! Happy Holidays to you!!!
I like your videos, you get to the point no random talking!:)
lol ive seen this vid a million times and just realized it was posted on my birthday. btw i LOVE ur channel
Today . . . Yesterday . . . possibly ever since I started this I have been looking for ways to keep my hair moist . Nothing ever seemed to work besides water . But its winter and I'm like going places with wet hair and a tangled fro makes me want to run and hide in my room . I have had a break down today . As well as yesterday morning because I tried too many things to try to keep moisture .
I am going to try this .
Thank you .
Thanks so much for the tips. I tried it. It really works. Your hair is awesome.
Check out the look method water only dried out my hair too but i add oil n conditioner in my spray bottle
Great video, I needed to hear this. I guess we should think of our hair like grass, water it and it grows.
she has been natural for years you should direct your friend to her.
