The fast-picking technique originates from Arabic music. Dick Dale (who was half-Arab) said he learnt the fast-picking technique from his Lebanese-Arab uncle, who played like that on the Arabic Oud (ancestor of the guitar). Dale adapted the technique onto the electric guitar, creating surf-rock music. Dale was probably the first rockstar to use Eastern musical techniques, several years before The Beatles started experimenting with Indian music.

I'm a fan of DD. This song and King Of The Surf Guitar are my two faves of his. Listen to the quick bends in KOTSG and you'll know why I also love and admire that tune. Like many, I found my way to DD thanks to Quentin T. I love Misirlou and attempt to play it, but tend to get tangled up on that tremolo picking on the looser high end strings. Dick is known for playing with very thick strings (much like SRV) so I'm sure that helped him develop that style. In this vid, it is just about as much fun to watch the intensity of the drummer as it is to watch the man. Got to hear him play live in a club a few years back. The next morning my ears were ringing like a .44 mag had been shot off near my head. LOL Dude plays LOUD!

Just saw an early day version compared to this one... wow. More energy in this one. RIP Dick Dale
This has got to be one of the most powerful guitar performances of all time. i keep coming back to this video. Oh how I wish there was a better quality version of it out there somewhere!
No solo es la guitarra, si no que también tiene a un baterista impresionante
True!
Absolutely incredible performance of this classic tune, probably the best I’ve heard…but props to the drummer,he kicked ass!!!
Watched this on the night and thought it brilliant , he gives it everyghing . RIP MR DALE.
Rest yourself you god of guitar. Peerless plectrum picker. King of Surf Guitar.
Went to numerous DD shows. Minneapolis, Phoenix, Jacksonville. “King of Surf Guitar!” 🎶
love this so much drummer is brilliant
Without popular contents we have no chance to know about people like him. That's just easy come and easy go.
