Wow! Have the greatest respect for you and your husband. I just started learning guitar, he has been a true inspiration! Hope he is doing well. Best Wishes!!!
80 years old and still shredding it! Your husband is one of my heroes--in fact, he's the main reason why I picked up the guitar after playing keyboards for 20 years.
Yes everyone, the guitar is strung in reverse. Dick was totally left-handed and learned to play on an upside-down, right-hand guitar. Rather than relearn everything when left-handed guitars became available, he simply strung all of his guitars in reverse order.
Well, it doesn't matter which way around you start learning. Picking and fretting are both equally unfamiliar to both hands. Give beginners both guitars to try, and not all of them would naturally use their dominant hand for picking. Whichever way you go, you still have to use the goofy hand for half the work.
Onion Head that’s exactly how I play too. I’m right handed but for some reason playing left handed felt so much more natural. And I didn’t know any better when I was beginning to play the guitar, so I just learned to play upside down and backwards. Now I get a left handed guitar and flip the strings and the nut around like Dick has it
@@tavicotavio Love all 3 players but they're virtuoso players, which doesn't automatically mean completely unique. Dick is playing a lefty guitar strung as a right handed guitar just flipped upside down, even thinking about it makes me confused.
I play the same way, comes from being given an accoustic when i was young. Naturally hold it upside down as im left handed so the high E is on the top. Then when i wanted an electric, the tone/vol knobs, strap mounts etc are all in the wrong position. SO i buy a left handed electric and the strings are then upside donwe. I saw him in concert about 12 years ago. Phenomenal show! He signed CD's that we bought and took a couple of minutes to converse with us, not rushed about it, he is a very nice person.
With most older musicians their playing is just an approximation of what they used to do. Somehow Dick Dale somehow still delivers the goods. At speed, using crazily thick strings, while suffering a barrage of illnesses and issues. Massive props to him.

Dick Dale, wow. I bought all his records in the early 1960's. He was a Lebanese-American who played Middle-Eastern classics to a rock beat. I saw him play in Eureka, CA when he played solo.
