    Airman Vision sat down with TSgt Andre Acosta of the California Air National Guard to answer some questions that you guys have asked when we asked for questions that compare the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserves, and Active duty. The Air National Guard is also referred to as the Air Guard at times too. We asked Technical Sergeant Acosta several questions that range from which Air Force component deploys the most to what are the different college benefits between Air National Guard, Air Force Reserves, and Active Duty Air Force?

    It took me over an hour to find a video explaining the differences between the two, so thank you! Most videos tell you only the basics, like one being federal and the other being state lol.

      Best decider in those cases are which ANG or Reserve base is geographically closest to you that operates positions you would like to do. And yes Guard is best with Educational options as stated above.

    Is the tuition assistance the same for both undergraduate and graduate degrees? I’m finishing up my Bachelor’s in Engineering, and I’m planning to go to grad school too

    • @LauderdaleJoeM
      @LauderdaleJoeM 3 года назад

      Yes, for me in Illinois, our benefit was 4 yrs public, in-state University tuition-free which starts AFTER Basic & Tech School. Our ANG also paid us over $100 mthly stipend. If we lived at college outside 100 mile radius, we also got paid mileage at Fed rate, to/from drill weekends each month. Sweet deal, gave me total control from pre-enlistment, to DEP while 17yo & onto Basic& Tech + later vol. deploy & vol. temp active duty AGR) + later partially cross-train. Depends on unit mission & openings. Most have Civil Engineering units, u mentioned.

    • @LauderdaleJoeM
      @LauderdaleJoeM 3 года назад +1

      Yes & not quite. Educational 4-yr tuition waiver from Montgomery GI Bill is immediately accessible AFTER Basic & Tech School completion (so it depends on length of Tech training), but ANG waives tuition right after you return from Tech School. Plus you earn college credits from the "Community College of the Air Force" while in Basic & Tech School, which may boost you up a few semesters in areas of Engineering as well as BMT electives. AF Reserve does education differently, not as rapidly as ANG. Some 'minor' differences in ANG by state.

    Would it be easier to start out Guard/Reserve and then transfer to active if I decide I like it and want to go full time, or should I go active, sign for 4, and if I don't like it transfer to Guard/Reserves after my contract is up? My end goal is law enforcement, so I want to do Security Forces, and I just got hired as a juvenile justice officer at the state youth facility where I live. I start next week!

      Active first

    • @kermittheslob8530
      @kermittheslob8530 3 года назад +1

      A lot of people do Active first. I think it’s you’ll still get benefits and be eligible for veteran benefits if you do active first (in only 4 years). But with guard you’ll have to do a little more and wait longer to get the same benefits as Active. So Active first. Guard last

    • @williamwood910

      With current climate and Recruiting regulations for active Duty AF, it almost impossible to go Active Duty as Prior Service (Including Reserve/Guard Airman), unless you are a fully qualified Battlefield Airman (PJ, TACP, CCT…).

    Suppose I separate from active duty, go to college and attend ROTC. Will the AF allow me to go into the Reserves as a 2nd Lieutenant so that I may pursue a full time civilian career elsewhere?

    • @LauderdaleJoeM
      @LauderdaleJoeM 3 года назад

      That sounds a bit backwards based on my knowledge of the 3 Air Force Components. I did 6 in Guard (17-23) +2 yrs Indiv Ready Reserve (IRR). I recommend youth to start AF ROTC asap & decide from there if you want some enlisted time, then a commission, or straight to officer (either way its gotta be earned 1 of a couple routes).

    • @LauderdaleJoeM
      @LauderdaleJoeM 3 года назад

      I was a Traditional guardsman for 6 yrs, during which I got my BA in 3 yrs. I worked in HQ bldg of an Air Refueling Wing, so I watched out for open officer postings which say what the title & job is. Since I asked to be put on Title 32 active duty orders every summer college semesters weren't openI, I saw Brig Gen & Cols daily, so they knew me when I applied & was interviewed for a Public Info Officer position on base. Affirm Action applied, but if I was selected, I'd go to OTS & return as a 2Lt, which may or may not be staffed as full time slot.
