Drummer Rick Allen joined the band in 1978, Lost his arm in a car wreck in 1984, The band took time off for him to recover and learn how to play with just one arm....... They didn't want to continue the band without him.......
He taught himself how to play the rhythm with his feet!!! album version is more powerful!!!!
they said if he wanted to stop case he couldn't do it he was going to be the one to tell them that cause they were not going to fire someone that at first they didn't even think would live, yes all the original memmbers can sing really well not that the drummer has a mic usually anymore but can still sing
He designed his new drum kit to allow him to use his left foot to play the parts he would play with his missing arm. It took him some time to learn to use it and they actually had a second drummer in place when they played their first concert after losing his arm. The idea was to help him ease into playing his kit live on the road just in case he had any problems.
It just so happens their first outing was the Monsters of Rock concert. The second drummer got stuck and couldn't make it so he had to play the entire show alone and never missed a beat. The audience reaction for him will give you goosebumps and make you cry. It was, well, monstrous!
If nothing else you can't say those guys ain't loyal to each other. They are pushing 50 years as a band and the only major personnel change was necessary because guitarist Steve Clark passed away. Vivian Campbell took his place over 30 years ago. Before that the only other change was the addition of Phil Collen and that was over 40 years ago.
VH1 produced a tv movie about them back in the early to mid 2000's that covers the bands history.
Def Leppard is a loyal band. When Rick Allen lost his left hand, he told his band to find a new drummer. The band ignored that request and instead gave Allen time to learn playing drums with single hand.
If you're looking for a rabbit hole to go down, this band has so many amazing songs to react to! Hysteria, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Women, Armageddon It, Too Late For Love, Rocket, Gods of War, Animal, on and on and on.......Their mix of harmony and power is rare and they always have such great instrument arrangements. So well rounded sound. One of my favorite bands, hands down! Great reaction!
The studio version of this is my favourite song of all time.
It's "I don't wanna touch you too much baby". Thanks for the laugh. Great reaction.
I am a 52 year old woman. This has always been one of my favorite bands. They have so many great songs. Please keep reacting to them. Their videos are awesome.
Same here! I'm 54, and I played this cassette in my car cruising around town all the time. And AC/DC, and some moods were CHICAGO, or REO. LOL
Welcome to Def Leppard. You can't go wrong, vast, amazing discography. ❤❤
You NEED to listen to the original studio version. Joe Elliott has always pushed the limits of his voice, and now his live versions don't do him justice. BEST ROCK BAND EVER! They are my all-time favorite band!! Hysteria and Animal are a couple other ballads you would like!
One of the most iconic voices ever. It's actually shocking how good he sounds now. He dedicated himself to it, kind of like Kobe or Jordan. Every show matters. It matters deeply to the band to deliver for every fan in the audience.
Great band Britt... keep digging, you might like a lot of their catalog
1. even my mom is in love with Joe Elliott
2. to quote bassist, Rick Savage, "if there had been no Queen, there would be no Def Leppard."
This is affectionately known as a power ballad. Sort of a sub-genre of 80's rock mostly, though it probably started in the '70s.
Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm in a vehicle crash while a member of Def Leppard. He rehabbed and worked with drum companies to help design a kit that would work for his disability. Kudos to him for not giving up and to the band for not moving on. They kept their faith and friendship with him and it paid off for all of them.
when this record came out in 1987 on cassette, me and my friends listened to it probably 2000 times that year, it was sooo effin good :)
This song was an absolute monster hit in 1988 - reached #1 on the billboard charts and was all over MTV. But then again, it came of their Hysteria album which also topped the charts and had 7 hit singles. Their previous album, Pyromania, was harder and was also a great album. Other songs to do (studio version):
Pour Some Sugar On Me
Bringin on the Heartbreak
Photograph
"I don't wanna touch you too much baby, cuz makin' love to you might drive me crazy. I know you think that love is the way you make it, but I don't wanna be there when you decide to break it"
Iconic song! ❤
They're babies in this video, Rick still has his arm and they're so baby faced!! I love them!
NOT sure , what , your talking about , here ? V. Campbell is 1 of the [ 2 ] lead guitar players here , with Phil Collen . Rick Allen LOST his left arm , BEFORE Steve " steaming " Clark died ! So, it is quite CLEAR here , that Rick Allen ONLY has 1 arm in this video .
@@robertd.7060 Yeah I know Rick lost his arm but he still had it in this video and the rest is girl talk, drop the panties club!!
@jackieperkins3861 ummm.... actually, Rick lost his arm before this song was written...
1:03 Did you happen to notice Britt mentioning that the drummer is an amputee?
Towards the end, you can't forget the bass guitar...paired well w/ the drums
Hysteria (official video) is a Must!
Def Leppard is a fantastic band I wore out my hysteria cassette back in the 80's. Anything from that album is amazing! Rocket, gods of war, Hysteria definitely songs to check out
❤❤❤❤ love DEF LEPPARD!!!!!!
Finally getting to the best band of the 80's.
Every metal band has to have a couple ballads. It's how they get girls to come to the concerts! Hard rock/metal bands like to build to a crescendo, so I pick up what you're putting down!
This is my favorite song from Def Leppard. I keep it in my DJ lineup.
He does know how to belt it out there with his voice. The drummer was a master at percussion and then he lost his arm, and the band decided to wait for him rather than to get a new drummer. I remember when that happened. It was at the height of their fame and song writing. It was a response that truly affected my life at the time.
Def Leppard just had a way of oozing a very nostalgic feel. They make you long for a place you’ve never even been.
If you love this song Britt, try “Pour some sugar on me”
Saw them just before you-know-what hit. They still rock! This is the epitome of a "power ballad." Def Leppard is somewhere between rock and hair band. So even their slower songs are powerful.
I don't want to touch you to much baby is what he said. Check out bringing on the heart break. They were considered a heavy metal/ hair metal band. Their intros into songs are great. I grew up on this music
Seen them live . If it was in the 80s I seen it lol yeah it was like opening up a door . Nice
I grew up in the 60s and 70s and when rock bands did slower songs like this we called them rock ballads.
One of the baddest ass drummers in history, & he has one arm. I was wondering if you would catch that.
It's Def Leppard's best album as far as I'm concerned. Hit after hit, Brit. Check out the rest of this album. You won't be disappointed. Rock out.
Finally! One of the best bands. Please continue to react to this band.
What a great time to be alive! I at the time realize I was so lucky to have thus kind of music oh the is great
I was there, the weather was red hot and we were all exhausted by the time this song came on. It was just the most incredible day.
I saw Def Leppard in 1988. They were all in the pocket and it was as tight as it gets. Most never get past Pour Some Sugar On Me which was fun 80s anthem rock but the early albums have the best songs.
Always loved DEF LEPPARD why is your screen like raindrops lol always wanted to ask that
The 80's was the wild hair decade for both men and women!!!!! Loved the Women!❤❤ Great reaction as always!!!!
3 years later their guitar player Steve Clark was dead from alcohol and morphine OD.
.30 alcohol along with the morphine, he was 30 years old in 1991.
It’s why I always enjoy watching older videos to see low slung guitar work of Steve !
Correct me if I'm wrong because i know she makes what she's watching very difficult to see, but it appears that the guitarists here are Phil and Viv, which would indicate that the show was after we lost the formidable Mr. Clark
I was there. First concert for me and amazing story behind it.
I had this on a homemade mix tape, then I bought the record, then the CD and now it's on my Playlist...which tells you about how old I am. LoL. Man, I miss the 80's, the talent, the music...the hair and tight pants. Teehee.
This song has a special place in my heart. In 9th grade we had a last junior high dance. I had a crush on a young woman. I am shy and full of anxiety. I wanted to ask for a dance, but couldn’t get myself to do it throughout the event. She was surrounded by friends, and they kept looking over in my direction. The song crazy babies by Ozzy Osbourne (which hits hard by the way) just ended. She came over and asked to dance with me, right as Love bites started. My absolute best experience in junior high. Our bodies close together, her smile, and she smelled amazing. Nothing stemmed from it. She was in a relationship. We never dated or really talked after this. No worries. The experience of that moment was what counted. I’ll never forget it.
these guys were the real deal. Such a beautiful song and stage
He lost his arm in a serious accident in which he nearly died, once they were already famous and had to relearn/teach HIMSELF to play the drums "one armed" so he could continue to play in the band! Truly INSPIRING story! Great Band! 👍🏴🇬🇧
"Hysteria" my fav. Alot of good music. "Photograph," I believe was the first song I remember hearing. Enjoy your reactions.
Def Leppard is associated with Rock and roll, this song is a rock ballad. though they also have plenty of anthem rock songs. They're a big band for big reasons.
Rick Allen the drummer took time to learn to play with one arm and has a specifically designed kit to help him do that as I recall.
Other big songs are Animal, Armageddon It, Photograph, Let's Get Rocked to name but a few.
My first concert and probably my favorite band. They are a fantastic live, but you really should do the video.
Rick Allen's car crash was so bad , his arm was actually ripped off in the impact! They got him and the arm to the hospital and managed to reattach it In surgery, but it got infected and they had to amputate it anyway, so he actually went through the trauma of l9sing his arm not once but twice!! The band tracked down a drum kit designer to create a kit for a one-armed drummer. Kicking Rick t9 the curb was never an option. Thst k8nd of loyalty is too rare these days.
I was a young Navy Officer when this came out in F-14 training at NAS Oceana.
BRITT! Def Leppard and Journey will be at Truist Park in July. You ought to go.
Another one from the long list of British bands that have gone down very well across the pond!😊
It’s what we do. 😂😂😂
This song is from their Hysteria album & was the #1 song from the album . That album also has done something that no other album in the last 36 years has done . That album had a total of 7 singles on Billboard's top 100 count down from August of 1987 - October of 1988 & 6 out of the 7 singles were in the top 10 . Def Leppard is the greatest band ever because when Rick Allen had his car wreck the album they had out at the time was the #2 album in the world right behind Michael Jackson's Thriller & even though they were the next big thing to Michael Jackson . When Rick Allen was in the hospital the rest of the band made the conscious decision to walk away from music until Rick came back or came to the rest of the band & said to replace him because he couldn't do it anymore . Fortunately For everyone , he was able to come back .
The way they build out the song gradually like that guitar strum opening the door to the next verse, gradual harmonies becoming more pronounced, guitars chiming in, with Elliot’s voice growing more pleading, this was a true masterpiece rock ballad. They wanted the Hysteria album to be an Iconic album like MJs thriller and it was, not one filler song on the whole thing and tons of variety. Professor of Rock on u tube said it cost $5M to produce, a real nail biter, at the time but then became one of the highest selling ever.
Phil Collen is absolutely unique in terms of guitarist, he's brilliant! He can make the guitar sing like an angel but at the same time he has be persuaded to go from front and do a solo! You'll notice that he rarely looks at the crowd, when he does his looking into the distance. He is completely wrapped up in the music.
Studio version is the 1 too listen too Britt great band do some more of Def Leppard
HeeHee... 🤭
Saw them open for Billy Squier, saw them at their peak Hysteria In The Round tour, saw them when they came back after a long hiatus at the Mall of America, and saw them in my hometown on N MN!!
This band gets around, and longevity is key, and they're still touring!!
DL forever!! 🤩🥳
I so miss these days of my life. Things were so less complicated. The music was absolutely 🔥, and friends were forever.
Love my 80’s hair bands era! Grew up with these guys! Poison, def leopard and guns and roses still touring and you can still see them live for a limited time but I suggest you go now if you have a chance! Great song and reaction!
Thanks fr for the reaction Britt
He don't wanna touch you too much baby, not text you. :) Hehe. You're so cute. And after the drummer's accident they designed a special drum kit he can play with his feet and one arm.
Happy you enjoyed the song so much🎉
You need to check out Def Leppard's songs Where Does Love Go When It Dies , Stand Up Kick Love Intro Motion , Hysteria , Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad , Two Steps Behind , White Lighting , Tonight , I Wanna Touch You , Now & Long Long Way To Go . Just to name a few .
Ms Britt..he sings higher but in this concert he is singing in the Bryan Adams vocal...the genre is Rock ballad. Thank you.
Much love from the Fiji 🏝 🇫🇯 Islands
The label that didn't become labelled, gives you a chance.
Love this song. Thanks for reacting Britt!🎉
On the original video they sound definitely much better.
One comment about the "raindrops" filter you use (I know it's due to copyright), you don't need to use it always, as it depends on each video and its copyright.
From this kind of music genre (soft rock ballads from the 80's), I'd love you to react to the original video of Lita Ford with Ozzy Osbourne singing Close my eyes forever, composed by Lita. Besides her singing, you'll definitely enjoy her guitar playing skills and style.
Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
❤❤❤
One of my favs from DL
You really need to listen to the studio version for the best vocals
It's called a rock ballad.....they are considered rock
No they are not considered rock, are you smoking crack? Def Leppard was part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, not rock!
Def Leppard was my first rock concert.
The year was 1983 and I believe it was the pyromania or hysteria tour.
40 years ago, wow time flies.
I am 53 years old now and next month I will be turning 54 years old.
By the way back, then, at least far as I know, and my friends, our parents didn’t go with us , matter fact, I think it was one of my friends, older sister and her boyfriend, who dropped us off at the concert venue and then came back and picked us up.
This is a scream-cry sing-along anthem for unrequited love and fresh breakups.
Death leopard was huge they had the rock fans plus they also had the what we'd call boy band fans teenage girls it was crazy
DEF
Monster comeback after Rick's accident...loved that album, it was my senior year in high school.
If you haven't heard it yet you might try their " Pour Some Sugar On Me".
On the afternoon of December 31 1984, Rick Allen (the drummer) was involved in a car crash with his then-girlfriend Miriam Barendsen on the A57 road in the countryside a few miles west of Sheffield in England. A car in front of theirs deliberately slowed down for Allen to catch up, only to speed up as he tried to pass. This went on for several miles until, in frustration, Allen accelerated to finally pass, at which point he lost control of the left-hand-drive Corvette C4, which hit a dry stone wall and entered a field. His left arm was entangled in the seat belt and severed, remaining in the car while Allen was flung out. Doctors initially re-attached the arm, but it was later amputated due to an infection.
Initially Allen felt 'defeated' but, buoyed by 'family, friends and hundreds of thousands of letters from all over the planet', he decided to continue playing drums with Def Leppard, and adopted a specially designed electronic drum kit. The band took a hiatus from onstage performances until 5 August 1986. He has since re-adopted partially acoustic drum kits depending on the setting.
One of my favorites as well, I like this longer ending though
Yo, Britt…when I was in middle school Def Leppard was considered Heavy Metal !! Back then that label kept me away ! Now I call it Rock ‘n Roll.
The first line of the pre-chorus is "I don't wanna touch you too much, baby." You asked what he was saying and wondered if it might (jokingly) be "I don't wanna text you too much, baby." Lots of dynamics, changes, and passion in their compositions. One of your best reactions that I've seen in terms of commenting on those aspects of this performance. I would speculate that Joe Elliot's voice had been roughed up a bit by all the stress he put on his vocal chords over the years by the time this performance was recorded. It was smoother, I believe, earlier on. One of my favorite bands, without a doubt.
One of my favorite songs, off of one of my favorite albums ❤.
PS - honestly, the album version is the best
Joe Elliott’s voice is definitely “aged” (for lack of a better term) in this performance. I don’t recognize this voice much. On the album he’s got a very clean and high-pitched, slightly squeaky voice.
They are just a rock band influenced buy glam rock (i was at this gig back in 1993 as a 13yo at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield)
You’re awfully spicy today. Rock on, Britt!
Love a B*tch - quiet riot
Poor Joe sounds like he has a bad cold😢Show must go on!!♥️
You have to go back a bit in time as this is them older from what I can make out though the watermark & I think this is the replacement guitarist as Stephen Clark passed away from substance abuse. Vivian Campbell replaced him who is a very accomplished guitarist himself & still is with them I believe. Deff Leppard has many hits, this is one of their ballads but they have some bangers as well. Try Rock of Ages, Photograph, Armageddon It, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Gods of War, Don't Shoot Shotgun & a bunch more.....fantastic band.
Joe Elliott, the lead singer, his voice is pretty blown in this performance. I wonder if all the years of belting out their songs has done some damage or was he just a bit sick for this performance? Def Leppard have so many great songs, definitely wort listening to more of their stuff!
First saw these guys back in 1980 before they became "Mega".. they were only kids back then but they were just amazing.......quite a bit heavier than this it must be said. Great band.
It sounds like a power ballad.
Several suggestions for older music:
Brenda Lee "All Alone Am I"
Julie London "Perfidia"
Peggy Lee "I go to sleep"
Nina Simone "Sinnerman"
Skeeter Davis "The end of the world"
Aretha Franklin "I say a little pray for you"
Connie Francis "The First Noel"
One of my all time favorites ❤
It’s a cymbal I think but Joe Elliot is known to rock a tambourine from time to time.
One of the best
As far as genre goes this was Hair Metal...lol. It was an 80's thing with Poison, Warrant, Winger, Motley Crue and a few other bands
Actually the drummer lost his arm in a car accident. The seatbelt severed it at the shoulder.
Hello, great video 🤟🤪🇺🇾 from Uruguay, greetings
I think you should check out the band "Europe". Same era. Similar style. "Final Countdown" is their best known song. But have many really good songs. "Rock the Night" or "More Than Meats the Eye". For example.
Good reaction! And, yes, Deff Leppard is a rock band. If you enjoyed their music, the way they play, I got some suggestions of DF's songs for you to react to: "Animal" (official music video); "Foolin'"; "Photograph"; "Hysteria"; "Rock of ages".
Hair bands era
Listen to Let It Go - these guys rock!
Def Leppard is definitely a hard rock band, but I've even heard 'Love Bites' on easy listening stations before.
My mom and dad seen them in Vegas not to long ago and said they still got it.
