The kid jumping off his chair at 9:08 wearing a Broncos hat and holding a poster? That's me! I was 17 then and 52 now. Feels like yesterday. Fun fact: Def Leppard played "Sugar" twice that night at McNichols Arena in Denver because they were trying to get as much footage as possible for the music video. When Joe Elliott introduced the song the second time, he said, "Just go crazy again as if you're hearing it for the first time."

Def Leppard is one of my favorites. Not only is their music great, but the fact that the rest of the band stood by their friend while he recovered from the trauma of losing an arm and nearly his life. They also encouraged and supported his efforts to relearn to drum missing an arm. Lots of bands out there that would have dropped him and gone on with a new member.

This is still, in my opinion, the most perfectly produced album ever recorded. Even if the songs aren't entirely your cup of tea, the production is a work of art in and of itself!
Turn the lights of, put the headphones on.
Sit back and feel the production.

This tour was my first concert ever, in 1987. Tesla opened for them (another band with an extremely unique vocalist in Jeff Keith). And while they don't sound exactly the same now, and have dropped down a key on a lot of songs they perform live, believe me when I tell you this is EXACTLY how they sounded on tour in 1987. The vocal harmonies are always exquisite on their studio recordings but they are equally exceptional live. You can watch this entire concert video for yourself.

As I recollect, a lot of the inflection in vocals was directed by Mutt. That, and he also provided some of the higher backing vocals on the album (as he did on Bryan Adams and Shania Twain records he produced). Read somewhere, that until a certain Irishman (Vivian Campbell) joined the band, they were missing a bit of that high pitch backing vocal live. 🤔

So rumor has it that when they recorded vocals for this album, each band memeber used an ADAT, 8 track digital recorder from the 80s and 90s, and recorded each vocal track 8 times. Mutt Lange, the profucer, used this technique to come up with the HUGE vocal sounds.

As far as the stage set-up, they'd used, this was the set-up that Def Leppard used throughout the whole Hysteria tour, they'd referred to this set-up as "Playing In The Round" because the stage was set-up to where there was essentially 4 front rows of seating for the fans, and Rick Allen's drum kit was set-up in the center of the stage and was rotating on a turntable

It's awesome seeing you discover the sound that made me love them. but the entire band is capable of switching roles in the band and still sound that good. Also the concert footage in the video is from the hysteria in the round tour. In the round means 4 front rows, rotating stage, drums in the middle. So all of the audience got front row at some point during the show. love them. That sound is distinctive to them.

They were certainly at their peak at this time in the late 80's with the late, great Steve Clark (long blonde hair) on co-lead guitar. Would you ever fancy doing an analysis on another song from this 'In The Round' concert? Bringin' on the Heartbreak. It's got something of everything. The song is broken into 3 stages and builds from an acoustic intro into a huge ending.. That, 'Stagefright' and 'Die Hard the Hunter' are knockout on this gig. 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' is very poppy...

Def Leppard’s backing vocals have always been one of my favorite things about them. The guitarists and bassist do them. They can all sing well. Love or hate Def Leppard they’re still hugely successful and headline their own tours each year. They carry many big names from their era on their tours. Hysteria is such an incredible album.
Love that we’re starting to see backing vocals increasingly used in metalcore bands live performances (Beartooth comes to mind). Also look up The Ghost Inside’s drummer Andrew Tkaczyk. He lost his leg above the knee in a tour bus accident the band was in when it collided head on with an 18 wheeler. Their story is incredible and after 3 1/2 years of recovery he and the band returned.

Hi Rebecca! I've been following you for a little while and want to thank you for listening/reacting/analyzing this... Def Leppard has been my absolutely favorite since I first heard Hysteria (junior high school for me) and I would really love to hear your reaction/analysis of Love Bites. Fan from Texas.

Hearing them in concert in '88 and then again in 2011, the lead singer was able to sing out side his range all those years and still keep his voice somehow

A Band that's had so much Tragedy for 12 bands. Yet they still kept on rocking! RIP Steve Clarke. If you like this one, try Animal. Amazing band.

I left this cassette in my Dad's truck in 1987. Next time I saw him, in 1990, he was still listening to it. He was in his 50s at the time. 😅

This band mastered the art of creating rock anthems where everyone wants to and does sing along. Nobody did it better.

Def Leppard was my band through HS, from the High'n Dry album on. Speaking of musicians with disabilities, I would suggest you check out Jeff Healey, a blind guitarist and lead vocalist. For his band I would start with "As The Years Go Passing By" at the Stuttgart Jazz Festival in 1995. 😎

I don't think I've seen a vocal coach enjoy watching a video as much as that! Felt like I was intruding on something!

We still had Steven Clarke at this time . This was filmed in Denver Colorado . I didn’t make it damn.. it was live in the round . The stage was in the middle of the venue and rotated so everyone was in the front row . This was ia revolutionary idea . Love your channel!!

From what I remember (and, I may be wrong) the band stopped everything while Tony was healing. I can think of more than a few bands that would have replaced him. It’s hard to find that kind of loyalty. Plus, I love their music!!!
