The genius of Def Leppard song writing all the way through Hysteria was founding member, song writer , composer was Guitarist Steve Clark. He was a genius that passed away after Hysteria. They continued on, but never achieved that success again. Greatest artist are often tortured. Broke my heart...
The production of Hysteria is unmatched, and there isn’t one mediocre song on the whole album. Pyromania + Hysteria, one of the all time best back-to-back albums ever.
I would add High N Dry to that back to back to back album magic (High N Dry 1981 (their heaviest album) - Pyromania 1983 (Still hard rockin') - Hysteria 1987 (Starting to move towards Rock-Pop)). The 3 best Def Leppard albums!
One of my favourites off Hysteria. Doesn't get enough love this track. I remember playing Hysteria on repeat on a boombox down at the beach with a friend and two girls we liked when I was a teen. Great memories from my favourite band!
Rob Squad you've done it again! You hit this fellow teacher deep in his feels and reminded me of another great song by my 2 all time fav band Def Leppard! Joe Elliot really wanted to try some new things in Hysteria, and their efforts paid off HUGELY. This entire album needs to be heard from beginning to end, with many of their greatest songs on it. You all want another softer song by Def Leppard? Listen to "Two Steps Behind" (Acoustic Version), which is a GUARANTEED relaxing tune! Thanks for the song, my crew! Enjoy the weekend!
I remember hearing an interview Joe Elliott did where they wanted to do what Michael Jackson did with his Thriller album that had so many hits off of it and that’s exactly what they did with Hysteria.
Thank you guys! I suggested this one. It's too easy to just suggest #1 hits, so I try to find much less known songs that still sound good. Hysteria was a heck of an album. Glad you guys liked it! Cheers
I’ve always LOVED this song…when I was a kid in middle school, I was obsessed with this song!!! I waited that whole year waiting for it to be a single or video & it never happened….to my sadness. It’s definitely one of their best deep cuts. I Guess it got lost in the shuffle of all the hits on “Hysteria”….glad I saw em play it live a few years ago….great reaction y’all 🤘🏽❤️🔥🤘🏽❤️🔥🤘🏽❤️🔥🤘🏽❤️🔥🤘🏽
This album came out in 1987, when 3 formats were happening. Cassette was king, vinyl wasn't far behind and cd was a new format just starting. Inadvertently, I bought it on all 3 formats. We were on vacation in Florida - August 87, when this came out. I only had my Walkman, so i got the tape. When I got home, a few weeks later, I bought the vinyl record. Then I got a cd player in early 88, and bought Hysteria again lol
I remember when my cousin got a CD player in 1984, was absolutely enamored with the clean sound. Didn't get my own cd player until the mid nineties, had hundreds of my own cassettes mixed off the radio though...lol.
I bought the cassette the day it came out, it was hot in my car, and my tape deck ate the tape 10 seconds into Women (the first song!) I went in and got another tape, and of course a CD soon after!
I say this every time y’all react to Def Leppard but I’m gonna say it again. My favorite band of all time. Ive only had the opportunity to see them live once but I enjoyed every minute of it.
Grew up on Def Leppard!! Still going to see them! They are still amazing!! As if they couldn’t sound better but they do!! Thirty something years later!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This band reminds me of my uncle. He and my aunt came to pick us up to stay at his house and on the way back he was blasting Van Halen, The Killers, The Scorpions, and Def Leopard. I think that might have been when I first fell in love with rock
A truly great softer tune from them is off the Retroactive album called Miss You in a Heartbeat. There is a version that is just Joe on piano while singing. Awesome tune!!!
Tonight is a good one you guys should check out also. I have always loved almost every song by this group. As a child from the 70's and 80's, how could I not be!!!
This was the closing 12th track from Hysteria and could have easily been an 8th single release for the album. Record labels and radio of 1987-1989 didn’t do that, it was tough enough for 7 to have been released. But this is easily a memorable track from this peak of their career.
This song should have easily been released as a single but that entire album was stacked. One of my favorites of theirs actually. Glad someone is finally reacting to it!
My favorite band!! ♥️😍🎶 Love Bites is definitely a favorite but you HAVE to check out “ Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad”!! 🥺♥️Your background wall looks fantastic guys!
Their first album since Rick Allen's accident, Steve Clarks tormented soul on his Les Paul as he and Phil bounced riffs off each other like their guitars were tennis rackets, Joe shredding his throat and Savage gluing it all together with his bass, and finally Mutt Lange pushing them all for perfection really showed in the end product. I remember when this album hit when I was in high school and it ruled the air waves for weeks. It was just so unlike anything I had heard before and I fell in Love with the band instantly. And have been since.
My favourite album. If you're going to go further down the Def Leppard rabbit hole, if you haven't already checked these out you should: Gods of War, White Lighning, Lady Strange, and their cover of Personal Jesus.
This is my all time favourite def leppard song. Unbelievably it was never released as a single which astounds me. As a person who only has use of one arm myself rick allens ability on the drums is nothing short of astounding i have seen a video on his drumkit setup on here its nothing shortof genius the way he uses a combination of footpedals and his one arm to play. Type in rick allens drum kit. well worth a watch blew my mind. Keep up the incredible content. Karl from Lincoln uk
I remember getting my hands on this CD the day it was released. I played it all the way through at a very unreasonable volume. Out of all the gold that this album has, this and Gods of War stuck out to me. Great song choice but keep digging through Hysteria then go to Adrenalize. Great albums. Cheers, y’all!
Rick Allen is also a visual artist in his own right. He branched out into the art world like the badass he is. Another song you guys should check out off the Hysteria album, which I don't think you've done yet, is Excitable. Edited to add: I hope you guys react to Comin Under Fire from the Pyromania album.
The Leps have been my favorite since high school in the early 90s. They have always labeled as “hard rock”, “heavy metal”, “hair band”. They have gone on record indicating they endeavor to be a pop rock band, similar to their influences from the 60s and 70s . This song is a great example of their pop influences!!
When I was a teenager, my girlfriend and I went out, and I cranked this song up….(shes my wife now by the way)…brings back memories from the 80s, we even saw them on tour for this album and the one after…Adrenalize.
This is my 11th favorite song from my all-time favorite album from my all-time favorite band. Thank you for reacting to this song. We all win when you two react to Def Leppard!
It was going to be, initially, for the summer of '89. But, they decided to move forward with newer music, and "Ring of Fire" was a somewhat newer song that they were playing live in 1990, that was going to be the next single. But, Steve Clark's death changed plans.
Actually it would've been the 8th single from the album . It had 7 singles from August of 87 - October of 88 on the Billboard's top 100 count down & 6 out of the 7 singles were in the top 10 . Something that no other album in the last 36 years has done . Their song Gods Of War is another one that could have been a single & would've been another song in the top 10 .
It's rare to like every song on an album but Hysteria is one that I do. I saw this tour and it truly was magical. From the standing ovation for Rick Allen to Steve's amazing guitar riffs. BTW Tesla opened for them on this tour when they were new and no one knew who they were yet. Out of MANY shows I've been to over the years this is still my favorite if I had to choose one!
You are so right about the way Rick plays the drums, that is why the band nicknamed him the thunder of god. Rick could makeup so many sounds from his drum kit. He could rock the house down.
I played this album every day for 2 years when it came out. It was on repeat at a party I hosted until people got mad at me. So I switched to pyromania. Haha. First concert I saw of theirs and haven't missed another since except the last one with motley crue
The next deep cut from the amazing Hysteria album. I’ve loved this album from the very first time I listened to it. The wall of sound that you get with headphones and also a good stereo system. They were on a real high with this one and they’ve had some great songs since but not the full album like this until their last one Diamond Star Halos. You really need to listen to Kick, Take What You Want, Fire It Up, Slang, Paper Sun, When Love & Hate Collide, White Lightning, Let’s Go, Tonight, Promises, Fractured Love and Only After Dark. A lot of deeper cuts and a few of the newer singles too. Love them all !!
The HYSTERIA album was just one bad ass song after the other and even slower songs, like this kick ass. The grit of this song, the harmonies, the beats are just insane. It is one of the best albums of all-time. Start to finish this album is one I could listen to on repeat. People do not give enough credit to the backing vocals of Rick "Sav" Savage. He is the bridge of the band. His bass playing is incredible, but his harmonies and backing vocals, especially in songs like this are crucial. Like Michael Anthony of Van Halen (another bass player), he is under stated in most of the music vocally, but without him these songs really don't have the same feel or life to them. This is my favorite slowed down Def Leppard song and I don't consider it a ballad by the true sense of how a ballad is written. It is more in the vein of "Bringing on the Heart Break" to me. In my opinion, DL doesn't do well with the typical ballas. Songs like "Two-Steps Behind" are well written but DL doesn't pull it off in a traditional sense as a band like Poison might. Most of DL slower songs are still heavy, gritty, driving beats and crazy insane sounds that you simply do not find in ballads. Songs like "Love Bites" and this one are what I prefer for DL over the sappy love ballad that many play. It works for other bands, but for this band they are anthemic rockers.
Women Animal Hysteria Sugar Love Bites Armageddon It Rocket Seven Hot 100 singles, six Top 40 hits (all except Women), four Top 10 hits (the rest except Animal and Rocket), and one #1 hit (Love Bites). Lep kept the singles from Hysteria coming for nearly TWO YEARS. Only five of the album’s twelve tracks weren’t released as singles in the US, all of them on Side Two.
Def Leppard's "Hysteria" album took them to new heights & is the top selling album of the 1980's. That's highly attributed to producer Mutt Lange helping give them a more commercial friendly sound. I'd encourage you guys to listen to the entire album in 1 sitting. "Let's Get Rocked" would be the next good one to react to. First follow up single to the "Hysteria" album on the "Adrenalize" album. Highly anticipated album since there's a 5 year gap between those 2.
There are not many albums that you can just put on, and let it play.....and every song is great. Hysteria is one of those albums. It was a masterpiece, and I had the cassette tape, and I honestly think it was in my deck in my car for a year straight. It sold well over 20 million albums, so if you all have a chance., listen to it from beginning to end. Its awesome. Great job you two!
Def Leppard is so good! You should revisit a band that you really loved on this channel -- Quiet Riot. Being football season now, gotta check out "Sign of the Times" by Quiet Riot. So much ENERGY!! Get ready to crank up the volume...BANGER!! 🔥🔥🔥
Glad this song gets the love and recognition it deserves - on any other album it would have been a hit single, but the rest of Hysteria was so damned strong
Hysteria to me is their best album... But it was also what was out when I was in high school and so many memories. The album really has so many great songs. I love their other music too from other albums. RIP Steve Clark (an amazing guitarist). I think the album Hysteria took 3 years to be made. Another great song from this album you haven't done yet is Gods of War (great drum/guitar sound).
Hysteria is the greatest album of all time, imo. And Steve Clark said this was one of his favorites off the album. Rip riffmaster 🎸
Screamin Steve 😢
Super underrated guitarist!
It was a great album but not their best. That would be Pyromania as it was more rock driven

Absolutely love the layers of guitar harmonics, riffs and mood tension in this. Phil and Vivian are masters of collusion together.
Vivian didn't play on this. Steve Clark did.
I saw them last summer and they were on fire!!!!!Long live Def Leppard!✌️🤟😃
For the most underrated song from the Hysteria album check out "Gods of War" next guys. You will love the opening bass solo and the drums kick too!

Another great song from this album you haven't done yet is Gods of War (great drum/guitar sound).
That is one album where I can listen to all of the songs without skipping to the next one.
