Def Leppards "Hysteria" album has always been one of my top 10 rock albums of all time. Frm the 12 songs on the album they managed to get 7 big hits, Women, Rocket, Animal, Love Bites, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Armageddon It, Hysteria, 6 of them in the UK's top 20. Even the non-hit songs on the album are amazing "Don't Shoot Shotgun" and "Excitable" sticks out. Just a force of nature this whole album.
What was so major Women, was that this was the first single and video released from Hysteria, at least in America. We 1980s Def Leppard fans had been waiting for long years to hear from our band again. Then it finally happened with this song and video! It was our first glimpse of and listen to what Rick Allen could do with his drums post-accident. We were amazed and delighted with the new music! It was definitely less hard, more poppy, and slickly produced. Not our guys from High and Dry or even Pyromania, but they were back and the music was good! Women holds special memories indeed!
That whole album is “FIRE” to quote Jay. The soundtrack of my 1987,88 & 89. It was such a slow burn from when they released it so many hits, Gods of War, Animal, Pour some Sugar on me….awesome to see Steve Clark raising that Les Paul again!
"That sound" is brought to you courtesy of Robert John 'Mutt' Lang who produced not only this album and its predecessor 'Pyromania' but also The Cars 'Heartbeat City' and more famously AC/DC's ' Back In Black' amongst many others. All massive sellers. And then he went and married Shania Twain.
This was actually the first release off the first album after drummer Rick lost his arm. Hysteria!!! This album is AMAZING. Try Gods of War next. It’s a killer song that was not released but should have been.

This was the first single released off Hysteria. Also the first time we seen Rick Allen drumming with one arm. I love the outro to this song, so epic sounding.
I remember this song being played in a local car stereo shop with some massive subs. The bass hits so hard that it almost makes you short of breath. Just pounding low end thump.
The first single released from Hysteria - and it stiffed (#80). They finally scored their first #1 single with “Love Bites” - the fifth single released from this album. They ended up releasing seven singles from Hysteria. Because of production and promotion costs, the album needed to sell 5 million copies to break even. To date it’s sold over 12 million in the US alone.
I was a young man when this was released and it rocked my world! One of my favorite albums, so many great songs and their sound is so unique. Gotta give a shout out to their drummer, Rick Allen for courageously learning to play the drums with one arm! They ROCK!
On an album with Pour Some Sugar On Me, Animal, Hysteria, etc this track often gets overlooked, but I've always loved it. It was the first new song we got from them after waiting YEARS post-Pyromania and Rick Allen's accident. It was great having them back!
My all time favourite band with yet another cracking tune. Hard hitting, sonic wall of sound that just takes you on a mindblowing musical journey. Love it.
Hysteria was a turning point for them, where they went full pop-rock, but there are still some rockers on there, like this one. i don't think you have touched on their real early heavy stuff yet, like "Let it Go", "Saturday Night", "Lady Srtrange", and most of the rest of the High n Dry album.
I never understood why this track stalled on the charts. I've always thought it was better than "Pour Some Sugar On Me". Had the pleasure of seeing DL in concert twice. Once in 2000 by themselves, and again with Styx and Foreigner in 2007...
It's important to remember that this was our first listen to "new" Def Leppard in over 4yrs. Also our first listen of what Rick Allen sounded like on the drums, playing one handed. I think they chose this as the first single mainly because of all the tracks on Hysteria, it's the one that "most' sounds like it could have been written in the Pyromania era but it's pretty hard to miss how incredible this production is. In the last days of analog recording, Mutt Lange pushed the absolute limits of what can be done.
I'm sorry, but you are not hearing Rick Allen on this. I love him, he is a great man, great drummer, great artist and so humble. But the drums on Hysteria are programmed drum machines.
That is true. He played on the tour but not on pyromania either when he had two arms. Not cause he wasn’t good enough. Mutt just wanted things exactly like he could program it.
They share this on their “Historia”, rockumentary, but when they were getting ready to film this video, the producers they were working with were uncertain about how to handle filming post accident Rick Allen. His band mates told them to film him as they would film any other drummer and this wonderful video is the result.
Hysteria was one of the first Albums I ever purchased for myself. I listened to this album almost daily for probably five years straight then maybe weekly for the next several years. It's still one of my favorite albums of all time. You can put it in a cd player and just drive and never have to skip a song. That being said, I have followed your journey and I think its amazing. I appreciate the music you are exploring and turning others on to.
A band I started listen to when I was like 13...? Just their own, and so amazingly great!! Started humming on a song a couple of days ago, "-Who is that?" I thought - that is pure magic! It was "Love bites" by the Leppards... Fantastic to see that what we were listening to back then still holds, and holds so well!! I am 55 years of age today - still listening.
Def Leppard is definitely one of the best! Fun fact: they recently released an album where they took some of their classics and reimagined them and recorded them with the Royal Philharmonic! It’s pretty awesome! You should check it out! 🥰
Great tune by Def Leppard. 🔥. Hysteria was a phenomenon when it came out. Def Leppard struggled after Pyromania, which produced some good hits but they needed this album to be a success. It was released in 1987 and this song was the first single released and got some attention, then the song "Animal" moved them up further, but it wasn't until the song "Pour Some Sugar" that this album went through the roof. This entire album kicks ass! Not a bad song on it and the Lep boys proved they had the talent and a sound that stood out that didn't mimic so many other rock bands of the day. The genius of Mutt Lange producing this helped as well.
The one and only time I got to see Def Leppard live was on the Hysteria tour. It was, if I'm not mistaken, the first "in the round" concert stage. They were brought out from the backstage area in equipment cases rolled down the middle of the floor to the stage. Before the encore they just hung out under the stage. This concert has a pro shot DVD/streaming version and you guys should watch it for your own enjoyment.

Gonna keep on saying it... Go back to earlier Leppard to learn what they sounded like before they started using this kind of high-gloss production. Let It Go is maybe the pinnacle of those early days, but I also love High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night).

Awesome reaction! Def Leppard is one of the many GOATs from the 80's. I grew up around a lot of tough guy types so I had to like them secretly but all that shit is long gone now. So, now I can say it openly: Def Leppard is awesome. Always were and yeah, you gotta give all the respect to the drummer. I don't think any other drummer can make a comeback like he did. You are such a pleasure to listen too and I love to watch for your reaction in a new song when there is a great guitar solo or sax or great vocal part coming up. I feel like a proud parent watching for the reaction and I get it with your gap or smile and it never fails to make me smile. 😊
The album that never stops. So many hits.
This video was the first time we saw Rick Allen with one arm. It was the first single from Hysteria album. It Ruled!
I have almost all their albums downloaded on my phone all their best songs. Women, pour some sugar on me, foolin, photograph and list goes on.
Def Leppard are one of the best rock bands around. have a listen to their cover of a track originally done by Sweet called "Action " it is excellent!
Love this song! It brought back a hazy memory from MTV - “Motley Crue has Girls Girls Girls but Def Leppard has Women” lol.
Gonna keep on saying it... Go back to earlier Leppard to learn what they sounded like before they started using this kind of high-gloss production. Let It Go is maybe the pinnacle of those early days, but I also love High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night).
I saw Def Leppard in Calgary in 2019 and was blown away such amazing talent and great songs I was tapping my toes and I listen to pyromania and hysteria quite a bit both albums rock
Another shining example of why I absolutely love this channel you guys! We were all about Def Leppard in high school, saw them live which was amazing and I probably knew every word to every song they had out back then, but as you age you forget these things and I had forgotten all about this song and I'm thrilled to remember it with y'all, thanks to whoever suggested it! I actually did remember most of the words it was fun LOL🤘💕😎
The sonic guitar sound on this song (and album) just never gets old.
Definitely a must-see in
Concert 🤬🔥
It’s hard to believe just how many hits that came off of the album Hysteria, it’s just one after another!!!
Can’t wait to see one of my favorite bands of all time!!!AGAIN! Gonna be rockin in NY soon when they play!❤️
Love your family and your channel and I LOVE Def Leppard so of course I have to watch! You guys are awesome so keep it coming!
"Hysteria" was one of those rare albums where you listen to the whole thing without skipping a song, it was that good! It was a masterpiece, and still is!
The first single off this epic album! Bought the album the week it came out in August 1987. Still have it today!
I saw them att Sweden rock a couple of weeks ago and they are still fantastic. Hysteria is a fantastic record and all the songs are great and i dont know how many times i have listen to it
I absolutely love watching your reactions for Def Leppard..i was lucky enough to discover tgis amazing band in the early 1980’s i was still in HS..Bringing On The Heartbreak was my 1st Def Leppard song i was hooked! Absolutely love their music and still listen til this day. Saw them in concert several times! In the Round Tour was amazing!!!

Remember clearly waiting for this Album to come out!! and man it did not dissapoint!!! Just an amazing song and album from an amazing band!
Def Leppard deserved all their success with Hysteria. Everything they went through with Rick Allen. It was a great tour too!
One of my favorite Lep songs! Love it!
Best song on album. Thans Def Leppard. I understand us men. SHE FED HIM WITH A HUNGER!!!!
Hey Jay and Amber
This Def Leppard song was literally the first track that dropped when their Hysteria album was released
Such an under rated song this should have been a top 10
Awesome reaction! Def Leppard is one of the many GOATs from the 80's. I grew up around a lot of tough guy types so I had to like them secretly but all that shit is long gone now. So, now I can say it openly: Def Leppard is awesome. Always were and yeah, you gotta give all the respect to the drummer. I don't think any other drummer can make a comeback like he did. A one armed drummer? I had mean friends who made fun of the guy but I always held that dude in high regard. Keep em comin', guys. 👍
The idea that this wasn't "tough guy" music was so silly. These were the kind of songs that got you laid.
There's only been one other one-armed drummer in a band as far as I know. No idea how he did it, either. He was way before Rick's time.
