Franz Stigler was an Ace (27 victories) under the command of Gustav Rödel in north Africa, whom is known for saying to his pilots: "If I ever see or hear that you shoot a man in aparachute, I'll shoot you down myself." So, to Franz, it was like they were in a parachute, he just couldn't knock them down. Stigler tried to get Brown to land his plane at a German airfield and surrender, or divert to nearby neutral Sweden, they didn't understand each other so he escorted Ye Olde Pub out of harms way, even protecting them from German anti-aircraft, they thought it was some kind of maneuver when they saw the two planes flying alongside eachother.

This is the second time today I've watched a reaction to this, and the second time I've cried, so no you are not the only one by a long chalk! In fact, Sabaton are the band that make me cry more often than any other. If you had told me ten years ago that it would be a power metal band writing songs about war that most made me cry, I would have laughed, but they are not just writing about war, they are writing about (and celebrating) humanity in extreme circumstances. And that makes a huge difference.

Another great true Sabaton story of how individuals or groups of people rise above the chaos and horror of war to show honor, heroism, and humanity to their fellow warriors, even if they are the enemy. True warriors understand that the warriors on the other side are the same as they are, fighting for their beliefs and homeland and that the rules of war should always be respected. And the song is a banger it as well. Hannes really kills it on the drums, the solo is epic, and Joakim brings the emotion required. great reaction, stay safe, keep rocking.

@The Metal Muse: Hey Dom! First, with Memorial Day approaching on Monday in the US, thank you for reacting to this. Veterans and history buffs alike appreciate reactions like this.
Having said that, this is a true story. As to why Franz Stigler didn't shoot down the Pub, the B-17F, it's simple: Franz was told by his training officer in the Luftwaffe, the German air force, that if he ever shot a man who was helpless in a parachute, that the officer himself would shoot Franz. The reason for this is, a pilot or aircrew member that had parachuted out of a plane was no longer a combat threat. And Franz saw the Pub that December day as helpless as a man in a parachute. That's why he didn't fire.
That being said, there's a bit more to the story. After Charlie and Franz met each other, there was a reunion of the 378th Bombing Group, Charlie's US Army Air Corp. (USAAC) bomber unit. (Note: In World War II, the US Air Force didn't exist yet. As such, the US Army commanded the planes the US flew in Europe, including both fighter commands and bomber commands. After the war was when the USAAC became known as the US Air Force.)
Franz hesitated to go, thinking he wouldn't be welcomed. How how wrong he was, as Franz was recognized for his actions that day by the 378th Bombing Group. And when Franz asked what he had done to deserve such recognition, a wife of one of the aircrew still alive looked at him and said, "Mr. Stigler, look around you. The men you saved have families. Children and grandchildren, of every man here, that wouldn't exist today, had you decided to shoot down the Pub. Every one of these people, Mr. Stigler, are alive today, because of you."
And what is mostly an irony in this story is that while he lived in Canada, Franz Stigler was called a Nahtzee (can't use the actual word, because RUclips) by Canadians, while Germans who fought in the war called Franz a traitor. Yet Franz, both as a combat fighter pilot and as a human being, acted with honor, humility, courage, and integrity.
May he rest in peace, and may we all learn the lessons he demonstrated with his life.
Edit: Dom, I have another movie for you to watch: Memphis Belle. In that movie, the Memphis Belle is one of the few bombers that flew 25 missions. I found out when both a B-17 and a B-24 visited my county (we have a county airport where I am) that if a bomber crew made it 25 missions, their service was considered finished, and that they could go home. (This was US aircrew only, during the war.) However, even if a member of a bomber crew made it 25 missions, they could still stay in service as training officers. The movie Memphis Belle is about that bomber's last mission before retirement -- and it almost didn't make it home. On the crossing of the Channel, they dropped all waist guns to reduce weight, as they were on fumes. They also had to crank down a wheel by hand, as the electro-mechanical system was severely damaged, and the pilot could not lower the landing wheel from the cockpit. And, like No Bullets Fly, the Memphis Belle is also a true story.

My dad was in WW2 as a pilot. He trained and piloted every military aircraft flying then but never made it overseas. Every time he got qualified on another plane the operations would change and he would have to qualify on another type. At least in his group the death rate was higher than pilots in combat. Better for one to die in training than cause the death of many because of not being good enough.

0:54 Fun fact: The name of the plane is actually "The Olde Pub". The letter that looks like a "Y" is actually a capital thorn: Þ. Over the years, the "curved line" of the thorn opened more and more to the point where it looked very similar to a "Y". This change happened in the time where English still had þ, ð, &, Æ, and a couple other extra letters in its alphabet that I don't have on my keyboards on mobile 😅. See the video "LOST LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET: 9 letters we stopped using" by RobWords for more info on those 🤓.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the thorn (capital: 'Þ', normal: 'þ') was used to make the sound "th" like in "thermal". The eth (capital: 'Ð', normal: 'ð') was used to make the sound "th" like in "father". Both letters are still used in Icelandic today for the same sounds and actually come from Old Norse languages (runes).

The story of the German who escorted the stricken bomber. One that proves that you can be a warriour with compassion, you can be a soldier with honour. You can show mercy to an enemy who is already defeated.

Fun fact: "Ye olde pub" is not correctly spoken as "ye ..." but as "the ...". That is because the "y" replaced the "thorn-rune" that was read as a "th" after christianization due to a lack of latin letters for that sound.

My Dad was there, in the Ball turret , being kept warm by a electric powered suit. The German fighters would pull their noses up and fire their guns up into the underbelly of the B-17. My Dad had 2 fifty caliber Browning machineguns fired by electric solenoids. From the ball turret , the twin .50 caliber guns were the only defense from the German fighters. The lifespan of a B-17 crew in combat was 17 Seconds.

It’s also why I lisp at the moment. And yeah I am unprofessional, this is a home set up I do myself. It’s my hobby, so yeah none of my videos are polished.
