Don’t be surprised is Junita (Stieglers daughter) writes a few words around your reaction, she usually do that to people who’re reacting to this video!!
There so many more things to say about this incident. 1/ I believe there was a standing order to not spare any plane or even pilot in a parachute. If anyone had reported the incident Stigler would most likely have been court martialed and shot 2/ Stigler stayed with the B-17 to keep the AA gunners from shooting it down, not leaving it until they got to the coast. He first wanted them to land but they refused, he then wanted them to fly to Sweden as it was closer than Britain, but they didnt understand what he meant and continued to fly towards Britain 3/ When fighting in Africa, Stigler was told by his commander, Gustav Rödel, that if you follow this order to shoot down helpless enemies I will shoot you myself. You will not follow this order to save the enemy but to save your soul because you will never forgive yourself. Stigler has said that he remembered this when he was thinking about shooting down the bomber 4/ Brown told his commander when he was debriefed and to an intelligence officer. However he was ordered not to tell anyone and the whole thing was kept secret. There was two reasons for this, one was that they didnt want other bomber crews to think that the next german fighter would spare them, and the other reason was they they didnt want the enemy to be portrayed in a humane way. 5/ Everyone in the B-17, except the initially killed gunner survived the war, with the last member dying in 2016 6/ The reason Stigler didnt fire in the first place was that he saw that the tail gunner machineguns were pointing upwards, showing no one was using them. When he came closer he saw the dead tailgunner and when he got closer he saw that the mid section gunners were either injured or trying to save other wounded crew members. 7/ Stigler wasnt part of the fighters that shot at the plane, they saw the plane fall and thought they had shot it down. Stigler was actually on the ground when the plane flew by having just come back from another mission 8/ Brown searched German records for 4 years but found no mention of the incident, for obvious reasons because Stigler never reported it. It was first when he put an ad in a german flying magazine that Stigler responded To me Stigler was a true hero and human who was in a war, but was still able to feel mercy
That's the thing about Sabaton - they might be doing songs about war, but really they are songs about humanity in extremis. Also, I agree, _1916_ (music video) would be a good next stop!
Franz wrote a book A Higher Calling. He just needed one more kill to get Knights Cross one point for fighter shot down and three points for bomber. Franz was trained in North Africa and he’s commanding officer said would kill anyone shooting a parachute .
I have to correct here: The author or authors of the book "A Higher Call" are Adam Makos and co-author Larry Alexander. Franz Stigler was transferred to Fighter Squadron 27 in North Africa. His commander there received them with the words: "If I ever hear or see you shooting at a pilot on the parachute, I'll come personally and kill him! You are not doing this for the enemy, but for you and your soul. At some point this war will be over and you'll have to live with what you did or didn't do." First Lieutenant (in German: Oberleutnant) was a man for whom the values of decency, honor and respect were not empty words, but lived reality. That's why he didn't shoot down the B-17. For him, this B-17 was the parachute that its crew depended on. Franz Stigler is one of the men who truly deserves the title "Knight of the Air".
@@ladydalida6917 Got book home . I was overseas in the US Navy when story was going on brushing up all my military history since painted all types of miniatures from ancient from modern warfare since I came back from Gulf War I and Bosnia.

Always shed some tears when I hear this one! So many more great Sabaton songs to come (Christmas Truce and En Livsrid I Krieg [live with english subs] are both quite wonderful and emotional. I also really love the guitar rift in The Valley of Death from their latest album (a song about the Bulgarians fight against the British in WW1)
Every Sabaton song is about true stories from history (mainly relating to war). They do heavy research using primary or secondary sources deemed reliable and I think the works of respected historians. So everything they describe as they sing is accurate
There is a great interview of both of them. Charlie said the same day they shot down multiple planes and obviously threw bombs on the city and Franz already had a good record as an flying ace and he also killed that day, but when he saw the face of one of them he said he just couldnt shoot, it reminded him of his brother he lost. There is a difference doing your "job" and shooting down a plane or looking straight into the eyes of a terrified person. They both said about each other they were doing their job and there was never a grudge for killing people on the opposite side. Iam sure you can find that short documentary other members of the B17 crew also are interviewed. Its jsut 10 minutes long. Very moving story and a great reminder of humanity and that love can always beat hate. Franz also gets to see pictures of about 20 people that live today because of his act and there was a ceremony on the memorial day of that event were he got a medal. Very moving
The only part ill give the luftwaffa credit for was hermin Goering is said to have told all command that if he heard of any of their men shooting a pilot that was in a parachute hed personally shoot the person that did it himself. As a world war 1 pilot he felt that it was ungentlemanly to shoot a man that couldnt defend himself.
I cannot recommend highly enough the book about Franz & Charlie, A Higher Calling, which not only tells the story of this event but it also shows what Franz went through, and why he did this (and other things), he was most definitely not a fan of the Nazi party just like many of his fellow pilots. Please do Christmas Truce by Sabaton. Bonus hint, ALWAYS play Sabaton videos until the end. Great job!
One thing i found when i read the book and they alluded to it in the video was Franz was trying to show that he was trying to escort them by flying to the front right of the B-17 because thats how the germans escorted their bombers but the crew misunderstood and wanted to shoot him down, only near the end did Franz remember that the Americans escort to the front left which is why he changed position.
Yeah. Also, apparently the germans did use some captured bombers as cargo freighters at that time, because it made them less likely to be shot down by enemies. With a german fighter pilot escorting them, it made it look like this was one such flight, which is likely why no AA guns on the ground actually fired at them.
❤❤ Hey B&B great reaction, loved this whole thing as well, song, story, visuals as well when first heard it. Please do SABATON- CHRISTMAS TRUCE, will not disappoint ❤❤ take care guys..
You should definitely look up photos of the B-17. You'd wonder how it kept flying. They don't call them flying fortresses for nothing- In an interview, when Franz was lining up the shot, he saw the tail gunner bleeding profusely and couldn't do it. Franz tried to get them to land in Germany and surrender, but Charlie refused. He then tried to get them to head towards neutral airspace, but Charlie refused again. So Franz escorted them to safety. He flew close enough to them so they wouldn't be hit by ground weapons. What a guy! After the war, he moved to Canada. When this story was made public in the 80s, Franz was called a traitor by his fellow Germans and a nazi by his fellow Canadians. Upon visiting a WWII party hosted by Charlie, he felt out of place. However Charlie told him "All of these people are here and alive because of you." Because Franz spared them, those men went on to have families and be happy.
Another good one by Sabaton is Fields of Verdun, its about the largest and bloodiest battle in human history until the Battle of Stalingrad in WW2 took it's place. It's also about my homeland of France, so I'm a little biased.
love the way that this band are prepared to put their own music secondary to tell a story that matters, don't get me wrong their songs are excellent, but i just think about people who have died rather than a song i have just heard, kudos Sabaton :)
"If i catch wind that you shot a man in a parachute, i will shoot you myself." that was what Franz' own commanding officer said to him. Franz, after seeing the horrific and utterly helpless state of Charlies plane, likened it to that same scenario and as such couldn't bring himself to shoot Charlie down. it wouldn't just be dishonorable, it would also simply be outright inhumane.
Many forget the German Airforce of WW2 viewed themselves as the new knight's of the time and actually treated captured allied pilots better then most other POWs.
@@chaplaingrunt5126 even in WW1 many of the pilots on both sides were like this. Manfred Von Richthofen, the legendary Red Baron himself, would take captured soldiers and invite them to dinner and actually get to know them. he would also get very angry if people would kill a downed pilot that survived the crash, especially if it was on his own side and even worse if it was of his own squadren. there was a reason he was buried with full military honors on BOTH sides and was even buried by his enemies with the highest of respects. he was so honored in fact that the entire world over was infuriated when they found out his grave was desecrated by a bunch of disrespectful little shits just for kicks. thankfully, he himself wasn't harmed. he was then exhumed and brought back to home to Germany where he lay to this day.

The sad part of this is, that when the story became public, Franz Stigler received Letters from Germany calling him a traitor, and some of his Canadian Neighbours called him a Nazi...In another interview Franz told the story, when his former Sqadronleader spoke to the pilots and telling them, that he will execute the one himself, if he gets aware that someone was shooting at Parachutes. Maybe this was another reason why Franz was seeing the crippled B17 as a Parachute
14:40 Yeah, he risked A LOT. First by coming close to the bomber, who could have shot him. Then when Brown refused to change his flypath, Stigler escorted him across the Flak (anti-aircrafts gun). Once again, a huge risk. If the flak saw the US bomber but not the german fighter plane, they would have shot. Even if his plane was seen, it was not 100% guaranteed the flak wouldn't shoot anyway to destroy the bomber. And then when returning to base, if someone had somehow identified his plane escorting an enemy, he would have been deemed a traitor and shot down.
So apparently, from what I gathered, the germans actually used some captured bombers as freighters at the time. Apparently that's part of why the AA guns didn't shoot them when they saw the german fighter yet there, because they assumed that this was a captured bomber on a freight flight instead of an enemy bomber.
For me as a German, im so thankfull for People like Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown, because our Goverment will Teach us Germans that every German in the Years betweet 1930 and 1945 was a Nazi. Im thankfull that German Soldiers like Franz Stigler who sayd to his fellow Pilots in his Squadron, "If i see someone of you shooting an Enemy Pilot on a Parachute, unable to fight back, killing them, i swear you i will shot you down!" , show the Enemy that not all People in Germany are or were Bastards and only have to fight for the wrong Side.
I don't know if you guys will see this, but Franz Stigler refused to shoot the bomber down when he saw the crew trying to save their own. He said "For me it would have been the same as shooting at a parachute". In reference to his commanding officer who said: "If I hear of one of you shooting a man with a parachute, I'll shoot you myself". So he tried to motion for Brown to fly to neutral Sweden, but Brown didn't understand and continued to fly for England. Stigler kept his mouth shut of the incident till Brown came looking for him.
