This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life. The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and at some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it. This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it. The lyrics hits hard, but it also shows that even when times change, new technology comes, one thing remains constant and that is the horrors of the war, both those who fall in it and those who survive and have to live with nightmare every day (ptsd).

And part of the audience reaction is "it could have been me". The audience was obviously Swedish and as soldiers were conscripted, had they lived in a different time it could have been them. A kind of somber echo of what was a traumatic event for the nation. (As a Finn it could have been me, too, considering we were part of Sweden back then.)

Nice reaction. Yeah, the audience is real I was at this show (sitting somewhere in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage) Just before this clip started Joakim said no one carries around a lighter anymore, but you all have phones right? So turn on your lights for this one. Then when the video started he said Totally wonderful, my friends let's now sing together en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war). Their video on the Swedish Royal Guard has a translation which is much closer to the original, but the videos are very different. The Swedish version has them pushing markers on a map, as if in a headquarters, but the English version shows a desperate battle between the Swedes and Ottoman Turks. In that case, the English video is clearly more exciting. And you looked delightful enough to be quite distracting from the lyrics.

Excellent reaction. Sabaton released two albums about the Swedish Empire, one in English and one in Swedish. In most cases, the song lyrics were the same, but for En Livstid i Krig (A Lifetime of War) the lyrics are starkly different. The English version is a more generic representation of the war, but the Swedish version tells the tale of a single Swedish soldier from the time of his enlistment as a boy to his death, literally spending his entire life fighting a war. @@themetalmuse There's another song on that double album where the lyrics differ between the Swedish and English version. It's the song 1648, about the Swedish siege of Prague. The Swedish version is, once again, from the point of the Swedish soldiers while the English version is from the point of view of the people of Prague. It was the last battle of the 30 year war. The song: Lifetime in War. About when Sweden was involved in the 30 years war. Swedish soldiers fought far from home in other European countries and all the way down to the Middle East. But you can also relate to those who, after that, also went into trouble and never knew if they would come home again.
I saw Sabaton in February in a much smaller venue, in Sweden, and they ask the audience to put up their flashlights in this one and Christmas truce. It was epic.
Must be an amazing feeling as a singer or band when the crowd is singing your music. I can only imagine how Freddie Mercury must have felt when he was singing Love Of My Life in Rio in 85 and also Sao Paulo in 81.
The lyrics are very emotional in this version. It describes the 30 years war in Europe (1618-1648) from a young Swedish boys perspective, sent out to a war far from home in a small village to a country he dont even know where it is. One can say that this conflict actually was the first world war, because so many nations was involved.
From the first time i heard this song live i fell in love but same time the story of it is so sad. Sweden was at war so many years and many men of Sweden died in wars. U should watch the history of this so u get a feel for what its about. But as always u do great reactions, ty and be safe
I wish I was there, but I was in Thailand. I have heard that this is an encore and that Joakim asked everyone to put up their phones and and turn on the flashlight. According to the press, there were 10,766 people at this concert in the Scandinavium ice hockey arena just before Covid hit Sweden with force. The article is from 2020-02-14
You know the coolest thing? Whtching people (sometimes epic like you) reacting to a song of another language and stil feeling it 100% Good to see, cheers 🙌
The fans are sharing the experience, as in Sweden there is still mandatory military service for all men(for women it's voluntary I believe). So most of the fans have military memories when this was a potential reality, should Sweden ever get into war...
That arena is called Ullevi and is saw Metallica there and when full there will be around 40-60 k with people. It is giving goosebumps just thinking about it when they all sing together
Its all real live and one take. I was there on the left, and it gives me the chills everytime i hear it. The most epic consert moment of all time 🤟🤟🤟🤟. Sadly Tommy the lead guitarist just left the band to make his own journey and take up his singing. Watch his videos when he sings covers, for example you raise me up search Tommy Johansson.
Interesting to know that you like to hear bands singing in their own language, so do I whether I understand it or not! Yeah, I like Saboton my introduction to them I blame on Floor, when I found out about the connection I just had to investigate 😆, I’ve not been disappointed but I’ve not seen them live yet! Just a thought, you may remember me pointing out a band called The Warning, they’re from Mexico and mostly sing in English (they were raised in a dual language school); but early on in their career the Mexican press critics criticised them because they didn’t sing in Spanish. This annoyed them so they wrote a song named Narcissista (you can guess 🤭) - Paulina the Drummer sings the main vocals on this one! Then there’s their second song from the current album (Error) called Marterio both are very good songs both with an interesting message! You might like them!
See about the band The Warning can you please add that to a comment I left over on the community bit. It's where people can leave their reaction suggestions. I just don't want to miss anything. Having them all in one place will make it easier for me to remember.
As a Swede i couldn't help but notice the translation seems a little half-assed but anyway, this song always hits right in the feels. One of Sabaton's finest without a doubt.
@@themetalmuse No huge deal, the message of the song still comes across just fine. But "Bland fränder från min by så drog jag ut i strid" should be "Among kinsmen from my village i went to battle", odd that they missed the village part cause it's the literal translation and more powerful/emotional than just "Among kinsmen...". Then in the chorus it should be "Cause the war it can destroy a man", it rhymes the same way in Swedish. Little things like that but i know i'm picky with these things lol.
Great band, great song and great reaction. U really should react to Sabatons Tommy Johansson. He has his own channel and make awesome covers. -She’s gone -you raise me up(1 octave challenge) -phantom of the opera A small sample of great covers. He also has his own band Majestica and an epic song called “Above the sky”.
They’re all unified because that’s what you get in a homogenous country like Scandinavia. No diversity in division there. They all know the song by heart because it’s part of their collective experience.
You know what, yes, I’m ready for it! Can you add this to the community section so I don’t forget. I made a comment where people can post videos for me to react to.

The Carolus Rex album, from which this song comes, is SO MUCH BETTER IN SWEDISH. To any Ukrainians reading this. As a Swede, this song is really special to us but I can't help but think of our Blue and Yellow brothers in the east fighting against tyranny and survival right now. There is no heroes in war but there is great honor and valor in defending your nation from a tyrannical aggressor. Stay strong brothers!
You are so wrong my friend. Do you know what they do? In the non-combat zone, that is a large territory, they sublease apartments and push for work to the west, they will use anything to get rich and they are rude and play it to the whole west. Kind of like gypsies. Many people like you don't see it because they are out of touch and believe the propaganda. However, the reality is elsewhere. They drive luxury cars here, make a mess, take advantage of their refugee status, but they are not people from the combat zone. Those are speculators
Lots of English mercenary troops died because they gorged on the local food and got stomach problems and they weren't used to the European winters so died off pretty quickly.
As a swede i can say that there are definatly alot of 5 star songs in swedish, but the sad reality is that the majority of them when u translate them to English be it with sub text or just an english direct translation u lose the entire flow of the song and to make it sound good again u have to change words around so mutch that it may aswell be a totally new song at times.

I saw Sabaton in February in a much smaller venue, in Sweden, and they ask the audience to put up their flashlights in this one and Christmas truce. It was epic.
That sounds so magical! We did the same thing a the big show in Glasgow.
Recorded in my hometown of Gothenburg. Proud of the audience and very proud of Sabaton. An amazing performance. Love the reaction video.
👏👏👏
Must be an amazing feeling as a singer or band when the crowd is singing your music. I can only imagine how Freddie Mercury must have
felt when he was singing Love Of My Life in Rio in 85 and also Sao Paulo in 81.
Same!
I felt this on my phone loved it so positive metal brings people together and you look good rocking out need to do More by this band
I’ve done quite a few Sabaton reactions, see my playlist. Thank you for the kind feedback. 🤘🤗
The lyrics are very emotional in this version. It describes the 30 years war in Europe (1618-1648) from a young Swedish boys perspective, sent out to a war far from home in a small village to a country he dont even know where it is. One can say that this conflict actually was the first world war, because so many nations was involved.
Thanks for the insight 🤘❤️
From the first time i heard this song live i fell in love but same time the story of it is so sad. Sweden was at war so many years and many men of Sweden died in wars. U should watch the history of this so u get a feel for what its about. But as always u do great reactions, ty and be safe
❤️❤️❤️🫶 thank you
Wonderful reaction. Thank you❤🇸🇪
Thank you for watching! ❤️
Great reaction. Lots of good material to react to. And, like Nightwish, Epica, The Warning - Sabaton is best experienced live.
I saw them live in Glasgow this year. So good!
Music like that transcends language 🥰
Im in love guys ❤❤
The fans are sharing the experience, as in Sweden there is still mandatory military service for all men(for women it's voluntary I believe). So most of the fans have military memories when this was a potential reality, should Sweden ever get into war...
🥹
Yes, it's epic!
Thank you for your reaction 🙂
☺️☺️
oh im ready for my fav band
They’re amazing!
Great reaction as always, love me some Sabaton 🤘
Sabaton is awesome 😁
The video and song is so good that i can actually focus at it 💀
🤪
Reactor is so pretty and prepare to this as Sabaton. That was buono from the start. Love From Finland.
Oh thank you!🙏 🥰❤️❤️
That arena is called Ullevi and is saw Metallica there and when full there will be around 40-60 k with people. It is giving goosebumps just thinking about it when they all sing together
🤩🤩🤩
@@themetalmuse sorry a correction it was the hockey arena called Scandinavium and was about 12k. but never the less it is still giving goosebumps
Of course the Sabaton fans from Goteborg in Sweden are real. British Sabaton fan 💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇸🇪🇸🇪
I thought it was CGI it looked so cool and beautiful
A lifetime of war and 1916 sabaton 👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼 👍🏼👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼
I’ve done 1916 please go give a look and let me know what you think 💭
Its all real live and one take. I was there on the left, and it gives me the chills everytime i hear it. The most epic consert moment of all time 🤟🤟🤟🤟. Sadly Tommy the lead guitarist just left the band to make his own journey and take up his singing. Watch his videos when he sings covers, for example you raise me up search Tommy Johansson.
I will and yeah I saw that news. I’m so glad I at least got to see him live at least once with Sabaton.
Hay there beautiful I really enjoyed your reaction to sabaton they are a great band keep it up gorgeous your doing great
Thank you so much!!
UK Army popping in for this 30 year war classic
Hey hey! Been waiting for you 🤪
As a Swede i couldn't help but notice the translation seems a little half-assed but anyway, this song always hits right in the feels. One of Sabaton's finest without a doubt.
Oh no! Do these miss out a lot?
@@themetalmuse No huge deal, the message of the song still comes across just fine. But "Bland fränder från min by så drog jag ut i strid" should be "Among kinsmen from my village i went to battle", odd that they missed the village part cause it's the literal translation and more powerful/emotional than just "Among kinsmen...". Then in the chorus it should be "Cause the war it can destroy a man", it rhymes the same way in Swedish. Little things like that but i know i'm picky with these things lol.
@@draug7966 ah thank you for sharing!!!
@@draug7966 exactly what I feel. Hahaha. There is a other video with different translation but in that one other words is missing instead.
@@draug7966 I would've translated it to I went out to war instead of battle. A battle is a one time thing, a war is a series of battles.
proper like always
En Livstid I Krig = A lifetime in war.
There is a English version of this song too called
A lifetime of war.
Thanks I’ll check it out 👍
100% real, filmed in my hometown...
🥰🥰🥰
EPIC..Who doesn't like this wonderful piece?!?!?😂
Not met anyone yet 😊
Great reaction 😍❤️🤘🏻💪🏻.
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great band, great song and great reaction. U really should react to Sabatons Tommy Johansson. He has his own channel and make awesome covers.
-She’s gone
-you raise me up(1 octave challenge)
-phantom of the opera
A small sample of great covers. He also has his own band Majestica and an epic song called “Above the sky”.
Oh I plan to, he is such an epic singer. I reacted to his Phantom but I may have hid that in the vaults due to me lip syncing too much.
just beacuse of this video and song u earned a sub
Awe thank you 🙏❤️🤘
@@themetalmuse pls do Ruina Imperii from Sabaton or Konungens Likfärd or Swedish Pagans
you should take a look at there version of motorheads "1916"
I’ve already reacted to it. Check it out. I cry most of the time 🫣
You need to understand swedish to fully feel this song with your entire soul
They’re all unified because that’s what you get in a homogenous country like Scandinavia. No diversity in division there. They all know the song by heart because it’s part of their collective experience.
It’s a great song
If you are truly ready to be devastated, check out their song "Gallipoli"
You know what, yes, I’m ready for it! Can you add this to the community section so I don’t forget. I made a comment where people can post videos for me to react to.
Great reaction 🤘✌️👍🇬🇧
Thank you 🙌
Im a bad man, I cant stop staring at your
i eat all music opra to anything a month ago i found sabaton it was an experience because so many songs are about soldiers who die in war but are not appreciated by that society but this band tries to give them honor check sabaton woodstock poland
Beutiful. And Sabaton is ok to.
The Carolus Rex album, from which this song comes, is SO MUCH BETTER IN SWEDISH. I'm a classically trained singer who's done some really powerful gigs (e.g. Victoria Requiem, top line, in St John's Cambridge, Bach St Matthew Passion in St Albans Cathedral) and this performance hits me in exactly the same place and generates the same emotions.
💗💗💗 I’ll need to check it out

Cool!
Hi, very very beautiful reaction 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much 😁
The english version of this is Sabaton - A lifetime of War
There’s an English version!!!!??
@@themetalmuse yes there is
they made the Album Carolus REx about their own countries history. Its a 2 disc album: one in swedish and one in english. @@themetalmuse
Great Reaction Muse.
maybe you already know, but I'll write it in anyway.
Hannes van Dahl the drummer is the husband of Floor Jansen
Animated audience that’s a classic lol
It looked too perfect!
Its real, i was there in Göteborg. =)
It just looks so perfect 😂 you can see how you’d be like “is this real real?”
Nice reaction: You should check out the concerts from Poland!
I will 🥰🥰🥰
Floor Jensen husband is playing the drums.
Boy, no sudden movements in that outfit🤣🤣🤣
Don't worry I am strapped in quite tight. 😁
I'm crying for almost the begining... (2 tours in Afg, one in Irak) huge number of brothers lost. I'm sick of it :(
darn Swedes

anyways, went straihgt in the heavy wieghts... livetimes in war... huh me typo much
Brain no braining? I also have this issue all the time 😉
@@themetalmuse braIN got marinaded in vodka, it happens occasionally here in Vinfland
I was there in the crowd. It’s not animated 😊
Quite a few people who were there have shown up in the comments to tell me 🤗
@@themetalmuse It was an epic show, just as well as the show in Stockholm. I saw Sabaton in Västerås this feb but the venue was really bad.
May I suggest you to jump down the rabbit hole of Tommy Johansson, one of the guitarist’s own channel. He’s simplt amazing.
Here’s a suggestion of a cover which shows you his talent. Both vocally and musically

i was there its real we all got glow sticks at the entrance
Seriously!!!! Did you keep it and frame it?
@@themetalmuse sadly i did not as i did not know they was filming and it would blow up as much as it have
@@antevasterhaninge1007 You were participating in history and didn't know it 🥲
I whish I was there
To any Ukrainians reading this.
Those are speculators
you might also want to watch the history channel episodes after reacting to songs for some extra background info
Love the Sabaton History channel
so many died before they could reach stockholm and travel to the battle
Lots of English mercenary troops died because they gorged on the local food and got stomach problems and they weren't used to the European winters so died off pretty quickly.
Try Tommy Johansson solo ,extraordinary talent
He’s awesome!
The age old problem of lost in translation
Im so sorry..i couldnt see the Video..i saw an Angel bobbing her head =)
😇😇😇
Could you PLEASE react to Sabatons Soldier of three Armies 🥺🥺🥺
I’m planning some Sabaton so why not ❤️
Thank you and my grand father thanks you cause he served in Detachment Törni @@themetalmuse
If possible, kindly do one of Mick Gordon's soundtrack titled The Partisan Feat. Tex Perkins from the game series titled Wolfenstein The Old Blood. That song takes you on an emotional journey.
Also in case you decide to do a reaction video then kindly read about the game's description first so that you get the idea what the song really is about.
Regards from India
👍👍👍
In Swedish, the I is i like you say it in "it, in, reaction" and so on, not eye.
Ah thank you!
Proud to be swede. To bad the translation somewhat suck at times. Someone must have google translated this and the other video with lyrics. Or they are not that good at english
I need to get a copy of the proper lyrics, I feel I missed out now.
@@themetalmuse i don't think you missed out. It is understandable but it's not correct grammar if you know what I mean. So if you compare those subtitles in the video with a proper translation you will still get the full picture. But I have a problem with seeing poor translations because I know many non Swedish people will react to it. I understand the Swedish words for obvious reasons hahahahaha that's why I want you guys to also get the correct grammar when you need the subtitles
@@themetalmuse English is not my first language but I would translate it more like this:
I look around and see my home disappear
My time at home now feels far too short
Mere youth, hardly a man when duty called for me
I don't know if I'll see my home again
Among relatives from my village, I went out into battle
And the world was on fire
Because the war can,
Destroy a man
I give my life for my motherland
But who misses me?
So see me as this
A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes back home
But who mourns for me?
Went into battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there, death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall, no song is heard
Challenging our destinies, once again
Far Away From Home (Be baptized and die in battle)
And the world was on fire
Because the war can,
Destroy a man
I give my life for my motherland
But who misses me?
So see me as this
A husband, a friend
Father and son who never come back home
But who mourns for me?
And when my time is up
Who will care then?
They keep struggling
Does a soldier get a dignified end?
Get to sleep
Disappear
And never wake up
Because the war can,
Destroy a man
I give my life for my motherland
But who misses me?
So see me as this
A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes back home
But who mourns for me?
@@themetalmuse Yes. Yes, you do.
I 100% agree that the captions to this video are from a half assed Google Translate.
The translation posted in this comment thread is close to identical to how I would've translated it too, so I won't bother you with another one.
Instead, I urge you to listen to the song with this guys' translation at hand instead.

moreover if you can make songs about history and let people feel patriotic about something that doesnt even have anything to do with their country, you achieved music and history gold.
