I highly suggest that if you are going to perform this repair to remove the two halves of the airbox. You can leave the PCV connect or disconnect it, that's up to you. This will give you so much room and also be able to spray brake cleaner when you are finished with this repair. This video did not mention that alot of oil comes out the moment you pull out the solenoid. So put shop rags directly under it and a catch under your car just in case. If oil runs down the side of the block, spray it with brake cleaner and wipe the oil best you can. Lastly the small 10mm bolt, do not over tighten it. If you strip it, you are completely SOL! I believe the torque is only 5.9/7 ft lbs (8.13/9.49Nm), very small. If you can't stick a torque wrench in there, just don't over tighten it! If you wish to not replace the solenoid and found the o-ring feels brittle, replace it with OEM Part# 11-36-7-534-776, it's only $2.76. If you want since you're already in there, replace the O-ring for the oil check valve too, it's right below the solenoid, it's a 5 minute job, it's Part#11-36-7-507-729, $4.63. Keepin' the MINI's on the road!
@@1AAuto Cool! I appreciate that. I have taken my R56 completely apart three times, including the N14B16A Motor and the GS6-53BG Getrag transmission so I know the ins-and-out of this model.

I have a 2010 base model. Is it just one solenoid or two? I know that I have a solenoid that is in the front of the engine. Do I also have one in the back?
I just got a drivetrain warning light that coded out to be bad valve timing solenoid. Your video makes it look easy but I have to order the part and find some time. Any risk in driving the car until then?
I had fault code P1007 and P1014 on Peugeot 207 car could not start I just cleaned it and bingo it started again. Be careful the symptom initially looks like a fuel problem, don’t replace your fuel pump just yet. Thanks for the video!
I have replaced my solenoid on the intake side. Now I’m trying to get the solenoid bold out on the one next to the dipstick. The head of the bolt is stripped so I cannot get it out. I can’t get any tools in to tap anything into the head and lever it and I can’t access it to drill into it. It’s super infuriating! Do you guys have any tips please?
Thanks a lot for the video, especially for the tip regarding the removal of the connector clip ! Is it the same inlet and exhaust valve reference please?
I followed everything you did in the video, I tried for over an hour to get the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid out of the my wife’s 2011 cooper countryman, I had everything I needed to replace the part. I suspect strongly that it is stuck in there. Please tell me what do you recommend before I take it to the shop. I very much enjoy your video’s, with that said, you’re opinion is very important to me.
+Nosh Hed We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Someone in a different video used a flathead screwdriver to pry it off initially from his bmw, as it was stuck. I don’t know difficult this would be without damaging important parts, since visibility is pretty terrible for that part in the MCS, but it might be worth a try, especially if you line the screwdriver with something to soften the edges and prevent scratching, such as electrical tape. Actually, now that I think about it, in the end he resorted to needle nose pliers. If you’re limiting any possible damage to the part you’re replacing, I think you’ll be fine. His vanos solenoids were in the front of the engine, and he didn’t replace them, instead cleaning them and reinstalling them.
@@We_Are_Borg_478 did you find out? I have my engine torn apart, starter out, transmission out for my clutch replacement. I will replace these 2 items.
Hi I have 283D,288D, 2870, 2891 code on a 1.6 cooper from 2007, both vanos have been changed but still the issue only when motor is hot, then the car is vibrating when the fault indicator appears, when motor is cold there is no problem, please any advice ? Thank you
Why you change it ? What problmes can cause ? I got the same in engine in my peugoet 308 1.6 vti 16v & i got a big problem with message stop alert oil pressure & they told me that because of this variable vlave timing solenoid , is that right ?
The bolt going through the bracket of the sensor is not a 10 mm bolt but a hex bolt for me. I have tried using a t-27 and t-30 hex bit to remove it but nothing is working. I am actually going nuts with this install .
Depends on which engine it is. Per Pelican Parts: “The MINI R56 N14 engine utilizes one VANOS (variable camshaft timing) solenoid for the intake camshaft, mounted to the cylinder head….The MINI R56 N12, N16 and N18 engines utilize two VANOS (variable camshaft timing) solenoids -- one for the intake camshaft and one for the exhaust camshaft, mounted to the front of the cylinder head.”

Makes sense, considering someone else mentioned in the comments that this video spared him an $800 repair bill. I’ve always found Mini dealerships tend to charge 3X what it would a specialty mechanic shop would charge, though I had my own horror stories from dealing with one of those too.
