Just spent a little under an hour changing my 09 Cooper S valve cover and gasket. Check engine light is now off and car seems to be running great. Your video probably saved my over 600 dollars not having the dealer do the work. Great video.

thank you so much for your tutorials! I love my mini and I’ve always wanted to work on my car myself but never had anyone to teach me. With your help I definitely have the confidence to take on these jobs myself. Thank you so much for these uploads and I’ll definitely be buying from your site!
Awesome videos guys & gals! Honestly the best RUclips DIY tutorials for car repairs. Used your videos for my old chev, Mini Cooper, and a few others for friends!! Appreciate the quality and tips a bunch.
When I pulled the coil plugs, they were all dripping oil! I think I found my problem. Never seen such smashed rubber seals and cover gasket. This 2011 is new to me so I'm following the trails of the previous owner. I think this is the original valve cover.
Thanks for showing us how to replace the rocker cover and seal. I just blew my seal so have to replace mine in due course! Please keep showing us these videos, invaluable to say the least! 👍
Thanks for putting that stock guitar music in the background! I found it completely neccessary while I was concentrating on what to do here, I would not have been able to watch the video without it on in the background! Great idea.
That is a text book level instruction video. I have a 2009 mini s hatchback and it has the check engine light on, stutters at low speed and there is heavy oil deposit in the screw holes. Unfortunately I can't just replace the pcv valve like 2010 and later models and hope it will work, since the pcv valve on the older models are tucked into the cover. This video make me decided to trust you guys instead of the cheap 50 dollar ones on ebay. Gunna talk to me mechanic and make a move if he concurs with me on the valve cover issue.
Hello, thanks the perfect video. My question is: Can be the same method the replacement of the Peugeot 308 1.6 VTi: (Model year 2008, 88KW, 120 HP). Thaks for your answer
look up what engine you have. This appears to be the N14/N18 Prince engine. a similar procedure should work for the naturally aspirated N12/N16 engines.

Hi, great video. My question is, what is the black plug you are replacing the red one with and where did you get it? My new valve cover has the red one but no black one. Thanks
How do I know that I have to replace that piece? I have an issue with my mini, is pulling air through the oil cap. and I'm not sure if replacing this piece I'll get fixed it.
Great video. But. None of the videos on this topic advise to be aware that some bolts can snap!! I’ve since been advised by Mini to use a new set of bolts for this procedure (£33.00 +VAT). Yes, I used a torque wrench at 9.5nm
My 2012 R56 N18 has a fuel line that encroaches on the space for the valve cover during installation. Looks like it needs to be removed to reinstall the cover.
I know this is older but I watched this today and unfortunately the rubber grommets stuck to the plugs and now I can't get them off with pliers it's too far down on the plugs not sure what to do.I'm changing the plugs but still cant get them off nor the plugs either.
How come your value cover doesn't have a Value Crankcase Membrane Ventilation? I have a 2012 Mini Cooper S that needs a new cover. Does it matter if I order the same cover you have or should I order a valve cover that has the Value Crankcase Membrane Ventilation? Thank you!
Yes, as it has an integrated PCV valve. It is the PCV valve that typically fails over time (~50K miles). Else, you may just need a new gasket if not properly installed the prior time. The gasket should not fail before the PCV. After market valve cover (w/gaskets) costs about US$100-150. The garage OEM part is more than 2x the costs. Plenty of German after-market parts suppliers. IMO.
Hey there i have a 2010 mini cooper s was drving home today and the car lost power and coolant leaking and then there is oil everywhere on the valve cover gasket and a code p0012 and p0001 and then random muilt cylinder misfire when i open the coil pack there is ton of oil in cylinder 1 -2 -3 and number 4 is dry the car turn on but feel like dying and smoke coming out the front hood
+Letran We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
My 2012 Mini Cooper S is different. The plug wires go over the back of the engine and there are some other differences in the arrangement. Every time I search for a 2012 I get videos showing the entire 2nd gen. Any help or links to a 2012 tear down would be very helpful.
OMG I head you said 90 inch lbs and being the brainless simpleton I am I immediately thought 90 ft lbs. I thought 90 ft lbs is a bit too much so I started with like 10 and I immediately snapped a bolt.... Thank god it's not stuck in the hole. Well now I will be revisiting your buisiness for some bolts....
+Lino Gonzalez Thanks for checking us out! All the aftermarket parts we carry are built to OEM specifications, are brand new, and are backed by our lifetime warranty.
It depends. The plastic valve cover is disposable on the Coopers especially on the R56, these pieces of crap has a built in PVC integrated into the cover, when you discover that it has failed by performing a smoke test then you will need to purchase a new one. Ever wonder why the intake systems on these cars are soaked in oil? This is why! I recommend to go with OEM, aftermarket covers tend to leak prematurely.
It is integrated within the valve cover itself and is not a simple valve replacement common in other older cars. This tutorial is spot on for the N14 (common on GEN II R56 and R55 early models). I have the same on my 2008 Mini Cooper Clubman S (R55). Just changed my turbo (after market part cost me US$500 and I had my local garage install that). I think I will also do (myself) the diverter valve and add a catch can to the clean side. Hint: change the oil [5W-30 (or 5W-40) synthetic] at a 5k mile frequency, 2x the Mini recommended frequency. This is expensive for me in Europe, but worth it on these turbo engines with Direct Fuel Injection. Avoids costly timing chain issues, fouled PCV's, etc etc. Make sure you have the upgraded timing chain tensioner on that older model. I bought mine used and this failed...luckily it was only a $2000 repair and not an engine replacement. Lesson learned the HARD way. At least I got the car for a really good price, so in the end I paid the high end of the fair market value with this repair. Love the car...but you do have to stay on top with the oil changes IMO!

Another great Mini tutorial by Andy. I'm replacing my valve cover and gasket on my 2009 Mini Clubman S today, and this was very helpful. Thank You!
1. I used this through every step & had no trouble.
2) The wires from the spark plugs are CONSTANTLY IN FRONT OF WHAT HE’S DOING!!!!!!!
Great video, I especially like the part with how you showed the pattern on how to tighten order
thank you 1A for some of the best videos on youtube.

I’m curious why you would want to change the cover , not just the gasket . Very helpful video though thank you made what sound a hard job look easy

Torque to 90 inch pounds? or is that 9 inch pounds?

In the case of this engine yes as it houses the PCV system (positive crankcase ventilation).
It is if the PCV fails, which is common.
