My neighbor gave me his Mazda because it was making ticking noises and the dealer quoted him thousands for repair. It cost me only $ 7 for the can of MAS cleaner. Car runs fine now.
cover the o-ring when cleaning the solenoid, otherwise it may dry out and crack. Great Vid Andy!!
Was thinking the same thing
Makes sense. The mass air flow sensor cleaner sets fast and clean.
Being a retired motorcycle technician and machinist, I would recommend removing the o-ring before cleaning with any solvent. Brake/parts cleaner works just as well and is cheaper.

Always wear safety glasses when using any chemicals that may end up going towards your face and potentially in your eyes.
@@cliffords.8341hahaha I learnt that the hard way it was only a little bit and shit man stung so bad put me an 1hr behind on the project.
@@pieceofshit6084 My oldest brother did that once. He wanted to hold onto me while I took him to a water faucet to flush his eye out, but I wasn't going fast enough and he took off half blind on his own. One day after lunch I had my cup of soda on my work bench with the lid off while using brake cleaner and didn't realize some of it went into my soda until I drank some and started getting dizzy. I looked at the soda and saw spots of brake cleaner floating at the top.
I don't know if my 2018 chevrolet traverse needs cleaning or not, but i will be taking it out and clean it. Thank you for making this video. It's always nice to have these types of videos out so people can maintaining they're vehicle at optimal working condition.

My psychic powers failed to tell me what kind of car this was!
I know I'm late to the party here but vvt solenoids are generally the same from car to car with only slight variations. This os prob just a general cleaning tutorial and you just figure out how to remove it based on your specific application
Toyota
Or any car that has a vvt.
Looks like a late model sienna
😂😂😂
Hi Andy! Question: Shouldthe battery be discy before removing the VVT solenoid?
@@rudysanchez495 Yes, it’s best to disconnect it any time you do work with electrical components
Thank you.
Even VVT’s only last 80-100K miles
GUNK 😮THAT IS METAL FRAGMENTS
Can we use Carb Cleaner on it?
Thanks...got replacement parts ordered but will clean old one and try each 😊
Shouldn’t you have lubricated that o-ring with some clean oil before you replaced it?
Is that oil ring leaks or loses pressure with that also gives a false reading to the VVT sensor
Someone put silicone when I found the sensor and I need to know if it’s leaking oil out of that sensor where is located in from the engine would that cause a cold that is not communicating with the Kranks is that like if the timing is off because of oil pressure what that cost that also please get back to me so I know what to do
All the VVT sensors were replaced by someone else and the timing chains what done or three of them I’m still getting the VVT sensor not communicating with the Kranks sensor could it be possible because they put silicone into the wiring that is still leaking oil because of oil pressure still giving us that sensor a bank to not communicated on a 2007 Saturn if someone knows please let me know what to do
Thanks alot ....what if we can get the cleaner, can we use local fuel ⛽ for the cleaning operation
No, you don’t want anything too strong that’s why MAF Sensor cleaner is good. It’s made for sensitive parts
Thank you I did my now my car runs great 👍
How’s ur car run with it dirty?
I connected it to electricity
No longer working from the inside what to do
I have a low idle problem. The idle rpm stays at around 630. When turning headlights on, the rpm further goes down. The car doesn't stall though. Have thoroughly cleaned the throttle body. No luck. Could the vvt solenoid be causing this issue. The car has done 100,000 kms with regular oil changes every 10000 kms. Have been using fully synthetic oils.
@@pankajpuranik469 it could be a number of reasons, but I would start with the IAC valve. Those can get dirty and cause issues similar to what you are experiencing. Try cleaning it with carburetor cleaner
However, getting them out of a 2016 Nissan altima is more difficult than cleaning them
Gotta get them from bottom
You are an angel! Just exactly what I needed to see! Thank you for uploading :)
U👍are good
I thought I saw some small metal particles on the screen when you removed the solenoid. As these are, I believe, supplied with oil pre-filter, is this an issue?
Autozone told me my vehicle, 2007 nissan murano, has a right and left OCV. I can only find one. Any help where I can find the other?
Maybe it’s an Intake and exhaust
❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this information it was very helpful
Pay attention: IF you see a lot of metal particles on those screens usually you are now in the deep s**t.
I need the housing anyone got any idea were I can get it, I’ve found the selenios but not the housing
I've taken out both valves out of my Astra H engine for a clean, and noticed that there are small gaps at the top of the valve (the part which opens up with 12v), should these be closed fully when not under electric current ? Would you consider the faulty and recommend replacement? 🤔
Their default home position should be closed
THANKS, This video helped me. Wasn't sure if I could, now I know.
is it really needed ? What milleage you had when you did it and what was the symptoms? Thanks!
Good looking bro very useful and helpful
thank you very good video
i am going to do it . i am having an issue with a 2007 kia spectra i replace new coils spark plugs and wires but still having miss fires and random miss fires. do you think it could be this dirty valve
Are you getting any engine codes?
Will carb cleaner work? Its hitting metal parts and not sensor at all. Your just cleaning the Metal parts of the Solenoid and not Electronic part of it? I also have WD40 Specialist Contact Cleaner quick drying made to clean sensitive Electronic parts, Now sure if that would work just as good as CRC or should I Stick to CRC?
Thanks for your reply.
I think as long as it’s an electronics cleaner it should be fine. Would not use carburetor cleaner
Do I need to reset the OBD error code to know if this fix worked or will the engine light on the dash and code go away on its after the fix.
After it cycles through the sensors and detects no faults it should turn it off eventually. I always clear it once I fix the issue. If the issue still exists it will issue the fault code again
May take 50-60 miles for code to clear itself
Got a 2018 Hyundai Sonata, pulling a P0100 code saying the Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 1) is this what this is? I saw a diagram for my car & it shows a camshaft actuator on the back passenger side near the exhaust manifold & a camshaft position sensor on the driver side near the intake. Not sure which one is which.

Great pressentation. Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you.
I have a question can I do this myself or do I need to send it to mechanic save some money
Would sensitive electronics cleaner work too?
You want something strong enough to clean the oil out
I recently changed mine on my Ford F150 at the dealership and the sluggish performance continues. Engine check light comes back on.
Obviously this is not a Ford Eco-boost engine. I'm going to have to remove the valve cover to access that VVT solenoid. Won't be a 10 minute fix! May try your cleaner trick on it, but will likely replace the solenoid after going through the effort of removing all the parts to get to it (spark plug coils, high pressure injector pump and fuel lines, several electrical connectors, a bunch of bolts, etc).
Esto puede hacer que mi G35 no acelere mas de 2000 rpm?????????
Please help
Change crank position sensor?
Can i use wd-40 to clean the VVT ? Or i ll need the mass cleaner spray?
Use MAF cleaner. It will dry quickly and not leave residue behind that can damage the sensor
Im a little confused here. I cant see how you done much of anything in reference to cleaning it. Being that the default position should be closed, not one orifice you sprayed into had fluid come out of another opening....hmm.
I just got charged $3,090 to fix it in my suburb Impreza 2012 2 weeks ago
I have a 2008 GMC Acadia SLT I need to replace the Bank 1 VVT on I can’t find this thing on the valve cover in the front or by the oil cap
can i use compressed air to clean it out aswell? or stay away from high pressure for this solenoid
@@HendersonSCA should use a cleaner, don’t think air would get everything out
👍🏻
according to another youtube vid, that sparkly debris on your VVT means the engine needs to be replaced!
I just replaced it on my nissan altima 2012 but the engine light on again and shows same code P0075?
Question, is there a way to clean out the sludge in general? I'm only @ 00:55 right now
Bro watch the whole video 🤦🏿♂️
What is the difference between a a vct camshaft solenoid an a bailable sensor
Hello, I have a car like that from 2013 when you have to change the time chain you teach us step by step to know step by step how to do it thanks.
Actually having the timing chain and sprocket done now. This is something I cannot do due to equipment needed. I have a shop mechanic doing it.
Does cleaning this part will cause a check engine light on???? Im afraid i will mess engine performance.
No, it just cleans the solenoid

I removed the ocv valve and it had what I believe is metal shavings in it. Looked like silver glitter. How bad is it? About to install it back in and test it to see if that noise stops. Your videos have been very helpful thank you.
Metal shavings is not a foot thing. Could be coming from the valves, heads etc. Need to get it checked out.
@@PhillipsVision yeah I replaced that solenoid and it's a minimal improvement with power but that knock is still happening. Set up an appointment to get it fixed because that's beyond my scope of mechanical know how. Thank you very much again for the assistance!

Might want to test coil after heating also. Copper resistance of coil goes up with temp and sometimes the open is hot. Great Job! Thanks! Going to test my wifes rear bank.
Where would I find the oil control valve on a 2018 dodge journey? That is the code my car is showing for my check engine light being on.....
Not sure specifically, since I have not worked on a Journey. I’ve found on the vehicles I’ve worked on that they are around the valve cover and intake manifold
@@PhillipsVision Thank you for the info! I will try to find it
In my Volvo VVT solenoid, in the center, the moving part is a plastic rod. I think it deformed and became stuck. It requires lot of force to push it back. I think the oil presure isn't enough to push the rod back so it's stuck. Cleaning it with dish soeap reduced mis-firing but there were still mis-firing. It's better to replace it with third party part costing $30 to $100 bucks. (Car has 200k KM)
Is it in the same place for my 2020 mitsubishi eclipse cross es???
Isnt there two VVTs in most cars?
Depends how many banks your vehicle has. There is normally one per bank.
@@PhillipsVision i have an kia rio 2018 1.4l engine car? Do you know if it has two?
@@shimzard should only have one on the top of the valve cover.
on earlier model hyundai/kias there is only one VVT Solenoid, and the timing is changed for both camshafts by a special gear that connects the two.
Hi. Can I use Electeical contact cleaner ?
@@BB-lc2cm That should work too
You recommend using that cleaner. Could one use a degreaser& let a solenoid soak in it?
I would not use degreaser on that, it can damage it.
@PhillipsVision ok I'll try the cleaner you recommended. Thank you for replying so fast!
Yes thanks.
Can this cause low oil pressure?
Can this cause rpm drop while under load sounds like vibration hum car shakes a little than accelerates

Hi Andy, Which location are you based out in canada ?
Is the control valve on the VVT?!?!
What happens if the screw fall down inside the engine???.
Can I use ultra sonication bath with 100% ethanol to clean it ? Thx
Cool. The VVT solenoid had a tiny leak on my 2006 Toyota Matrix at 206k miles, so a replaced it and it's filter with OEM units. I thought it was the body that was leaking, but it turned out to be the o-ring, so I could have just replaced that. Also, you can use an m12 battery to bench test the unit to make sure the valve is moving freely.
I just cleaned out mine and it works great now.
Should I try this?
Can they cause a rattle noise?
Can this code cause ur car not to work
Hellow sir, is there filter or strainer for vvt solenoid? kia rio 2017 thanks
On the solenoid itself it’s a strainer
Got a P11D6 fault on seat ibiza. I'm struggling to locate/purchase the part but will try cleaning first.
If I use brake cleaner etc and dry it off do I just plug it back in?
So I removed and cleaned solenoid on ISUZU. Having difficulty seating part all the way in past the o-ring. I noticed the screw bracket moves freely. Any suggestions?
Put some oil on the O ring
Can I use throttle body cleaning?
Brake cleaner also
Why clean istead of replacing? I rather replace it.
A lot of times it’s just the screen getting clogged from dirty oil . It’s best to try this route first instead of throwing parts at it . Example an Audi 4.2 has 4 of these. Granted some cars it’s only $40 to replace. Every customer is different with what they can afford . Would change oil / clean sensor and go from there
👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you
Thank you boss

Can I use intake valve cleaner?
I don’t see why not
Have a 2007 Toyota sienna 3.5 V6 the car is set for a while maybe a year and a half or so try to start it and it turns over and has a chat timing chain but it turns over it sounds like there's no compression whatsoever we pulled the plugs from the front so the front three cylinders we checked the timing there checked the compression it was very little compression squirt a little dribble oil down each plug hole and rechecked it came up with 140 lb in each cylinder and when we pulled the valve cover off the front three cylinders there's no oil up in the engine on the top at all and then you can crank and crank and crank and it pushes no oil up there whatsoever any idea what we should look at we did pull the oil pan and check the sump screen it is perfectly clean there's nothing there any other ideas or is there the VVT solenoids would that keep oil from going to the top of the engine if they're stuck or anything wrong with them
Thanks
can't we open it up
