Thank you!
Vanos Adaptation seems to be an essential part of any timing chain work. It does not hurt to do it. I rebuilt my whole 2012R56 N14 non turbo with new 0.5mm larger pistons, and it kept throwing P00BD Mass Air Flow sensor. It stayed on for 99% of the time for one year till I discovered the need to do the Adaptation. This video showed me to buy the Foxwell NT510 Elite, and I my newer unit has MORE Vanos adaptation options, not just clearing, but learning the advance and retard values to show if it's in range. I think it has a learn feature too. I did them all, did not hurt. The very next drive cycle the Check Engine light went out by itself, and so far the next drive cycle it stayed off. Very rarely do I see it stay off but only one or two drive cycles then back on. I'm crossing my fingers! I'll ore to this post after some more time. I replaced many many things to fix it, even took it to MINI for one week. They never suggested the Vanos adaptation! I explained all that I did. I guess they did not read my notes very clearly. They gave up and gave it back to me. I think my problem is/was that the short term fuel trim shuts off when I have hesitation at 2800 rpm, and it messes up the MAF sensor readings. I heard that Vanos solenoids can give the P00BD in some cases. That's how I turned to Vanos issues and tried the adaptation.
That’s awesome 💪 i hope you are good to go for a while
i did my first timing chain ever thank you so much for posting this ...my r56 lives again
Man I hope this works! Just did the timing chain with your video as my handbook. Started up and let it idle while it was still up on blocks a few times and I was certain it was gonna be perfect. Started to take it for a drive up the road and then it just diedright before the exhaust got really loud. Was able to limp at home. I scoped all my cylinders and the pistons look fine so I don’t think my gears slipped. Keeping my fingers crossed to try this when I get home. I don’t have the same scan tool, but it’s the same brand and I think it’s actually an updated version.
cheers for this mate
Thank you for your videos. I have a 2013 Countryman S n18 engine with a code 2da0 and 2c58. Do you have any ideas what could be causing this and the repair? Thanks
I have a reoccurring 287D and a 296B just bought this scanner and followed the guidance. So far it idled for 45 min without codes. I’m scared to restart tomorrow. I hope that this car is able to save, runs fine outside of the second start check engine light.
Got an issue with intermittent irratic idle on mine, did sensors, oil, both vanos solanoids, plugs and ht coils but still irratic until warm. Could this help?
Is it a good idea to do this step after changing the vanos solenoids or even removing for a clean and putting back? Can it hurt if I do this step having not changed the timing chain? Thanks
Hello!
Will this adaptation method using a foxwell work if i clean out my throttle body on 2006 mini cooper r52?
Would I need to do this procedure on 1.4 n12 mini one ... I have replaced venous solenoid .. no obd codes tho... thanks Rob
Good Video. I also have the 510 and it's not only a great tool but needed for DIY on my car anyway. I replaced the Transfer case Actuator Motor in my BMW and got to the oil reset which was no problem but seems you have to code the Servo Motor. It asks to turn on or off Terminal 15. Why didn't they just say ignition switch, idk.
I have a question if anyone can answer it. I bought a new aftermarket servomotor with new gears etc... It came with a resistor. when I ran it on the scan tool the Classification resistance was G - Classification Res stored was G but the screening resistance was C. So I used my original resistor. The Motor is a DC stepping motor that turns the worm gear inside to apply pressure on the clutch in Transfer Case a little more a little less when needed and adapts to wear and new / used oil. It's always changing slightly. what is the resistor for and should I have used the one that came with the new motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Is it possible to reset the vanos and valvetronic stops and minimum lift adaptations? Also, does the Foxwell scanner show the actual timing of the camshafts?
Hello sir I have 2008 mini cooper base 1.6l replace timing chain and phase getting code p0015 I bought scanner as u mention to do adaption but no luck .any advice pls 🙏 ? Also my idle stall once and check light comes on
Hello, my situation is the following, I change my solenoids for my mini cooper base 2009, it IDLE rough por times, don't have codes to read, do I need to get it reprogram or reset adaptations
Can I reset the vanoss even though I done the timing chain a year the car seems to be running very rich I've only just purchased the foxwell scanner do you think that it would work or will I do more damage in resetting 🤔
Waiting for your reply kind regards Mark
I replaced the timing chain and immediately after replacing was appear the error code 2845 and 283d. This mean that now need vanos adaptation?
So am I right in assuming that failing to do this could result in engine power dropping off at 4000 rpm and even rough misfiring kind of idling? Just like my r56 jcw?
Is this something you have to do wen replacing timing chain or vanos solenoid? Or will the car learn itself while driving?
I'm in the same boat, 2012 clubman s. Changed timing chain and p1338 and p1339 shows after short drive.
Triple check my timing swapped cam sensors vvt solenoids and codes still shows up
Will this adaptation work?
I have a creator, Bmw, mini OBD scanner. Can I use that to do this procedure?
Hey, I still get a 296B after resetting adaptations. I’ve swapped both sensor locations and it stays at 296B.
I replaced both vanos solenoids and checked timing.
Driving me bonkers!! Runs great, stupid emissions test soon.
Any advice?
Thanks!
Ron
Cheers mate had this issue helped loads ,, any clue what code a0b1 is? Currently haven't issues with it can't find anything on it .. Thankyou
Will this fix vanos loud cold start on bmw ?
When does this procedure needs to be done after the solenoid is replaced ?
This dang video saved me from world animation!
I was wondering if you would know if the scanner you have does coding like windows up down with key fob thanks
It doesn’t, what you need is an app called BimmerCode and a Bluetooth dongle
Not sure this will help but, I ran across your page on a search and thought maybe someone could help. (I did subscribe and will be watching your other videos.) Recently I left my doors open for a couple hours while washing my 2010 R56 S and the battery died. I jumped it fairly easy but the engine started making this knocking/diesel like sound. I drove it about a half mile and the engine sounded terrible, turbo was popping, no power, vibrations, etc. Then once it got warmed up no issue; runs perfect again. I read somewhere that a bad battery may cause this so I just replaced it but still have this issue. I scanned it and no codes. The timing chain and guides were replaced less than 10K. Car has 84K. Any ideas before I take it back in? Thanks in advance.
Can I do this with the NT530?
Need timing marks for my 2012 mini cooper coupe R58’
Awesome video, thank you. Is the process same for just replacing the timing chain tensioner? Having difficulties starting - it cranks and engine stalls.
Check your groundstraps
Or they call it earth strap
Can I reset adaptations after spark plugs are changed? Or does it matter?
Help me please. I have a mini cooper S non turbo, I have this fault but do not know where to look. fault code "P1124". I looked it up and it is called the "Differential pressure-intake manifold pressure, bank 1
How do you do it on a snap-on solus edge I'm lost
Will this work for bmw as well?
Hey there just did chains on a 12 cooper s with push button start and the foxtell 510 goes into the reset parameter and then requests Ignition off or terminal 15 off when it’s done and the start button stays on. the 510 then says ignition state on, requested off and the car won’t shut off. I left charger on all night and key off doors locked and still wont finish the adaptations reset because the terminal 15 isn’t shut off so it can save in to the pcm I’m guessing? After sitting all night it the start button was still lit up. Idk how to shut it off so I can finish this job lolol thanks for any help!
I'm having the same issue with the 510 elite when trying to calibrate the valvetronic system after reseting Vanos adaptations on my R60. Did you ever figure out the issue?
One more question… is your scan tools able to activate low and high speed fan functions and troubleshoot/reset air bag trouble code? Thx!
Its a late reply but for anyone else wanting to know - yes to activating the fan but it seems to only activate the high speed it sounds like. It's just one speed, not high and low.
Purchased a 2011 BMW Mini Cooper. Not knowing when or what the prior owner had changed so just as maintenance I replaced the timing chain. After the engine was reassembled, utilizing the Foxwell I reset the adaptation camshaft. As the Foxwell was completing the 10-second count down the car shut down. Right at startup, the check engine light and oil light came on. Not sure why I'm having an oil pump problem. Could it be due to the car turning off during the reset process? I removed the crankcase cover and made sure the timing was correct and it was dead on. Would anyone have ideas?
p0013 code mini cooper 2014 not starting??
I replaced timing chain on R56 and rebuilt head. No trouble codes. Do I absolutelety need to do this adaptation?
The first time i did my timing chain i don’t reset adaptations right away. My car ran fine. Once I reset then it ran much better though
Great video. Thanks for doing these. I like the way you keep it basic.
Do you happen to know the process for a manual transmission? I got stuck towards the end of your process because it had me doing something with terminal 15 . I need to research more about terminal 15.
I am waiting for my Bentley Mini service manual. Thanks for that tip too!
I will look into it when i get home from work tonight 💪
@@ProjectMini Thanks for the great video. I too am looking for some clarity. 07 Mini N12 manual trans, went though the exact process you showed with my Schwaben tool and wasn't quite sure what the terminal 15 on and wait 10 seconds does. I've read it's first button push without brake/clutch which I did, but didn't hear anything moving/resetting. Car threw a P0013 before timing chain and solenoid replacement. Same code now, car ran for 30 seconds and now cranks but wont start. Hoping for some help on this one 🙏🙏🙏
@@mountainmischief3828 Terminal 15 is ignition; Terminal R is key. After resetting, when you get the Terminal message and countdown, turn off the ignition and remove the key, then hit enter and wait. when it's done, insert the key and start (no Brake/Clutch pedal) and continue the steps. Some people even let it sit off for 10 minutes to make sure the ECU burns in. Mine was a whole new car after the reset!
@@REALDAPH Thanks, but ai have bigger problems going on. Ended up taking it to the highest rated euro place in my area, it's been 3 weeks and they still have no idea what's wrong.
Great video mate
So i just changed my 2 camshaft sensors but same code is still popping
Wondering if resting the adaptation will clear the code ?
It’s possible, but i would do my due diligence first to make sure that the camshaft sensors were the cause of your code
@@ProjectMini code p0015 popped up concerning camshaft sensor ,changed both and code still re-popped
@@assaadhariri Must have been out of timing. Did you
manage to fix the issue?
hello i have problem and what can i do?? fault :- “A” Camshaft position-timing over-retarded please help
code is P 0012
What his terminal 15 on the Foxwell scanner?
Its the first step in the video, put your key in the ignition and press the start button without pressing the brake or clutch
Hi how can i erase the transmition code.bmw
This process works for the transmission CVT reset?
No, this is for the camshaft timing control
I have to blow $200 to do this? Does this HAVE to be done? Letting it idle for 20 min shouldn't it learn after timing chain replacement since battery was disconnected and I cleared all codes with code scanner.....at least something?
what if I haven't done this after the timing chain? I'm getting low rpm stutter after the replacement and I was wondering if that could be it. I've already put like 3000 miles on it.
I doubt you’ve hurt anything but i would definitely do it asap
I’m having the same issue. Codes keep coming back P0000 and P0012A so it’s timing. Replaced VVT solenoid. Recently did timing kit. I think the HPFP is going out but my FRP is exactly what yours is at idle. It takes forever for it to start now and won’t get going without putting the throttle into it during crank. I’m assuming the cam phaser is bad but I’m assuming that I just need to try this first before doing cam phaser and HPFP.
@Max, what ever happened? Having same issue.
@@durk1980 valves are so caked with carbon and pistons have a bunch of carbon. Rings are going out too. Motor is getting fully rebuilt
@@maxboya Geez. These cars suck I'm sorry; fun to drive, but not worth it. I've done intake cleaning. It was actually not that hard all things considered. Having a beast of a time finding a scan tool that will clear this VANOS adaptation - without getting JUST a BMW tool. I'm selling this MINI the instant it's fixed, so I won't have use for the tool anymore after I sell. I'd like a nice one that will work on all cars, yet clear this adaptation.
Will doing this reset have negatively impact any tune that may be on the car? Like, will the tune be wiped?
No, i have an RPM stage 3 tune on my car and it’s not effected
@@ProjectMini ok, thanks!!
No problem
I ordered the OBD unit, did exactly as you said and its all good. But, it still has a hard time starting. What else could be wrong?
Could be vacuum leaks and or map sensors
The link for the scanner doesn’t work
If you recently did a timing chain job and did not do this, would it throw a code?
Mine didn’t through any codes, i did this maybe a week after the timing chain
Project Mini did you notice a difference after resetting?
Yes, my timing chain was pretty worn out so the new one was a good amount smaller.
Will any other scan tool work (with the same capability)?
Most likely it will
If installing a new rebuilt motor in a non-Turbo Mini 2010 what adaptations should be cleared?
All of them
@@ProjectMini So same procedure just select the top choice and it will do them all?
R53 owner here… how does this process differ on the Gen1 adaptation clearing process?
R53’s don’t have VANOS
@@ProjectMini so Just replaced Throttle body due to P1125 / P1126 code. Been running great for a few months then threw codes again and into limp mode. Heard about adaptation clearing being required. Thoughts?
What adaptation are you referring too?
@@ProjectMini relative to throttle body position sensor.
These adaptations are for vanos on an R56
You think P1338 and p1339 and reduced power warning are caused by not reseting adaptives values after timing chain job?
Im in this boat right now. Double checked mechanical timing with the correct tools and procedures. Not CEL on ,just the reduced power warning and p1338/p1339 as pending DTC.
Delete pending codes, car start normal and drives good for some meters. Once reduced power warning come on again the two codes apear, car loss some power but drives and idle good. Once you turn off and back on the engine it cranks longer that normal and pinging until reach 2000 rpm. Any input will be apreciated.
2011 R56 with first generation N18 and manual 6 speed.
The same thing happened to me and I have Code P1338, the same thing happens to me completely. I reused the timing chain, now I'll check how long it is, maybe I'm thinking that we have to keep in mind that the N18 has double VVT, therefore, it may be that by offsetting two cams, the time will run more with respect to the crankshaft.
Please someone who has experienced this and has solved it
Code p0297 will not clear. Can you help
Were you able to clear this? If so.. how?
Well unfortunately that didn't fix my issue. I give up. Mini for sale
Shouldn’t you have pulled the key and waited ~15secs after the countdown and terminal 15 message?
