  • @mfree80286
    @mfree80286 4 месяца назад +11

    No, I don't buy the hydrolock explanation for the K24's RUD. There would be far too much evidence that wasn't present. As that bearing started to drag it imparted a pulsed bending force across the length of the rod and it looks to have failed at a stress riser (the lettering) via fatigue cracking.
    Pulsed bending force? As the dragging bearing rotates it wants to bend the rod in the same direction of rotation, and since that movement is resisted by the wrist pin you flex the middle of the rod rotationwise, but as the engine is still operating under (big) power, under compression you're complexing that with the bending moment but when the rod goes into tension you're resisting it, so it bends more/less/more/less/more/less/more/less, alternating loads 1000 times per second. In fact if everything else wasn't so loud you probably could have heard it "hum" outside the block before it cracked and broke.
    Like a thick feeler gauge, if it's straight you can push it under something with a good deal of force, but the slightest bend and it wants to flex. Load it straight compression at 1000hz and it'll last longer than your patience. Flex it with that same load at 1000hz and it'll break across the middle pretty quickly.
    Now, on your neighboring rods I could buy that the first piston striking the head could have lifted the head enough to leak some water into that cylinder and get a slight bend out of it, but there's still a dearth of indicators as such. My memory may be faulty but I don't recall any smoke or steam from your exhaust when the engine came apart...

  • @UncleSpool
    @UncleSpool 4 месяца назад +22

    Plumbing protip: any time you can use a 45° instead of a 90°, do it. 90s literally cut the flow in half compared to a 45. There's a dead spot that forms in the bend, and basically only allows half the flow.

    • @RogueViirus12
      @RogueViirus12 4 месяца назад +6

      That depends on the sweep of the 90. Regular 90s are definitely worse than a regular 45 (a little over double the flow friction like you said, 2.15x) but long sweeps are only about 29% worse.
      Space constraints are obviously a factor regardless but in applications where you need a full 90 degree turn (like not having enough space to have the line make the other 45 bend further out with a gradual natural sweep) it's better to use one long sweep 90 than two 45s. Also gives you two less connection points so two less points of failure.
      Basically like you said, use a 45 if you can get away with it. But if you need a 90 and can fit a long sweep one go with that because you'll only be marginally worse off

    • @UncleSpool
      @UncleSpool 4 месяца назад +2

      @@RogueViirus12 very succinct, thanks for the reply! I just wanted to mention it, since it looks like he could easily get some 45s under the intake manifold.
      Speaking of sweeping 90s, he could also route the hose if possible to sweep into the right spot, too bad they don't make braided hoses with a preformed bend. Business idea? Lol.

    BSP thread is actually pretty common in the equipment industry. Kubota especially is fond of it and while it's difficult to find fittings for sometimes, the use of a sealing cup/bell design inside, instead of just the threads sealing (like taper pipe thread) means it makes a sturdy, solid connection.

    My guess would be the oil pressure wasn't enough for that much torque and rpm since you already said the psi was lower, and rod bonded to the crank. Hydro lock would explain rod break but wouln't explain the bearing getting that hot imo.

    Don't think i would run that low clearance fitting on the inlet to the block for the coolant. You want a smooth radius bend so it does not restrict flow. In the other end of you the block (exit at the cylinder head) it can be a good thing to have a small restriction because the water flow from the pump will actually increase the pressure in the block/head a little bit and help to avoid boiling of the water in the hottest areas (around the exhast valves). EDIT: I noticed now someone else (and engineer) commented on the same thing and recomended a 45 degree bend. That could also be a much better solution. But I do think nice big radius 90 degree bends are also available. But 45 is probably better.

    15:00 only a true car bro moment. Notice how they subconsciously got quite just to hear the acceleration...? Maybe good audio editing? I know i was talking/praising and shut dfu haha. Anywho, I'm happy and high. I'm watching this on a TV with surround sound. It almost felt like I was there. This Audi Sport Quattro was so cool and random. I'm happy you wouldn't try to make that into its own episode/video. I truly enjoy the surprise. Watching your videos is like watching Speed TV or Velocity Channel. But a more modern/fresh take! Mike, you touch the childhood in me with these videos. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Mike, love the videos! Can you do a video on how you route your oil and coolant lines? Ive got the same dry sump system and and electric water pump. Im finding oil in my catch can to the point it sprays my engine bay. My coolant Temps are staying too low. Thank you!

    i may be biased being a vw fan but i still think you should have went vr6. 12v 2.8s take boost really well make tons of power and dont really blow up. plus the noise factor.

    I think you're absolutely right by starting at 500hp - there will no doubt be a lot more fine tuning before you hit the point that power is your limitation.

    That Oil pressure sensor should really be installed on a leash for reliability sake. My evo ate through 2 sensors when directly mounted until i leashed it ITs been 3 years since the last one died.

    Hey Mike, take a look at Dailey Engineering. They build dry sump systems that excel at de-foaming the oil. Their pump bolts directly to the billet pan that scrapes the oil off of the crank. The pump has one section built like a roots blower to scavenge the foam from the engine and send it through a special oil separator. Some of the mystery rod grenades might be from too much foam in the oil. They have pans for K20s. Someone down thread also mentioned detonation as a possible cause. Do you have knock sensors?

      I currently have a Dailey system on the engine, that's what we've been running since the beginning. :)

    I love this build but, I feel horrible that it was kinda took in a different direction just to do a time attack event..The Street/ Track version of this car was suoer dope..Driving on the street with interior and still tracking was goals and would get used way more..Best wishes with new Motor.

    Did the previous head gasket show signs that it failed? Looking at the head gasket is the next best way to see if it failed if you don't have a coolant pressure sensor.

  • @gollumthewicked
    @gollumthewicked 4 месяца назад

    Any ideas as to why the head gasket might have gave way? Any signs of detonation? Part of me wonders if, at your power levels, you wouldn't have been better off using torque to yeild head bolts since they maintain higher clamping loads under temperature growth.

    Mike, I’m thinking about Trevor from motion auto blew up 3 and all were all rod related. He used stock rods and yours were better, I’m thinking maybe it might be a low oil pressure problem. Stock pressures may be too low if water wasn’t the issue. Just a thought.

    I can't remember if this was addressed... there was an earlier spin, was the engine stalled quickly or reversed at all during that incident? If the bearing shell keys (the dimples) flattened out they could have slowly walked and starved themselves by blocking the supply hole.

    About the alternator, I found it usefull/inexpensive to swap my own for a lightweight Denso one. Apart from having a shorter belt/changing the plugs, it was a straigth on replacement for my upgraded C20XE. It delivers plenty electricity for a trackday use... Why stick with a big "factory" street alternator ?
