      You can't teach Heart, and that was always Steve Smith's best trait. He didn't have good fundamentals or anything, he just wanted it more. Great Guy and Great Player, but not what you want as a Coach. The types you want for coaches are the Wayne Chrebet/Jerry Rice/Wes Welker types. The Guys that succeeded because they did all the little things rather than on pure willpower and physical ability like Steve Smith.

    Wes Welker had his breakout in Miami though before going to NE, thats why it cost NE a 2nd and 7th round Pick to get him. He succeeded in 2006 with Joey Harrington being his Primary QB. The numbers aren't Eye Popping, but Welker was everywhere on the field that year and finding ways to make clutch plays. His name was in the play by play a lot on 3rd downs. Thats why Belichick got him, the dolphins had Chris Chambers and the last legs of Marty Booker so they didnt want to pay Welker.
    Kinda weird, but Roddy White also had his breakout season in 2007 with Joey Harrington as his QB.

    “Accessories”
    That’s how I feel about the combine. When I played college football, I saw a lot of really good players get benched or told they weren’t gonna play just because of a 40 time. Despite the fact they were better than the player in front of them. It boggles my mind, especially going up playing basketball where skill (technique) is the emphasis.

    We knew Worthy was going to be fast before the combine. It’s neat that he prove the record, weeeee! But it’ doesn’t move the needle much because that was already considered his strength

    Steve, I’d love to hear you talk about Rome’s difficulties getting separation in college. He has strong hands and high points the ball but against MW talent he didn’t get much separation. Do you think that will affect him in the NFL?

      @@nwk101 except against real competition like Michigan that plays an NFL type defense with better talent. But sure yeah he totally “dominated” against the MW and PAC-12. Except he doesn’t break tackles and he’s not juking anybody doing so. He just wins at the high point then gets tackled. So dominate I guess.

      @@trentonprahl7846 I’m sorry dude but did you even watch the Michigan game or just look at the box score? Pennix missed Odunze on a couple of throws and even one on a walk-in touchdown. Also, when does “dominating” include having to juke people and break a bunch of tackles after the catch? Marvin Harrison known weakness to his game is his ability after the catch, but he still dominated. Was Odunze’s 92 catches and 1600+ yards and 14 TDs not enough for you lmaoo?? Rome may not be flashy but he’s for damn sure smooth and can win at all 3 levels of the field. And my friend.. that is a fact!

      Seriously the 40 is just one measure and it's not even the best measurement.
      Stop and go and stop and go and turn and come back. So the best measurement should be the cone drills. See who can zig through the cones back and forth then a dash at the end would be a good measurement.

    Ppl get caught up with 40 times instead of watching college ball. That's how the Diggs, Puka's, Kupp's, Amon-ra St. Brown's, slip to the later rounds & become gems. They were already good before they arrived. Idc how fast a player is w/o pads. Watch more cfb.

    I think the shuttle is at least more useful than the 40 and it makes sense for someone like Edelman because there was no tape on him as a WR. For the high end guys i have no idea why people care about the combine when there are 30 games of tape

    • @justinlast2lastharder749
      @justinlast2lastharder749 3 месяца назад

      Because most of those games are against subpar competition, and nobody has the same situation. The Combine provides standardized testing where you can directly compare results in the same situations. Every player is in a different situation in terms of the team around them in College. So if you want to compare directly, you run them all through the same tests. This allows them to compare your physical attributes directly. Common Denominators are important.
      Robert Gallery looked great in College, so good the Raiders took him 2nd Overall. He only hit the 225 for 24 Reps at the Combine though and some questions arose. He then became an epic bust as he was overpowered by NFL level competition. The Combine exposed him. Jamarcus Russell and Vince Young had combine issues that forecast their eventual downfalls. Matt Leinart had a mediocre combine that led to his mediocre career....
