    Here’s a serious question: Does Eminem consider himself the greatest of all time? In a medium where participants regularly call themselves “The Best Rapper Alive” or give their albums self-referential titles like The G.O.A.T., for an emcee as accomplished Marshall Mathers to dance around the topic stands out like a green hat with an orange bill. We dig into Slim Shady’s relationship with the throne in this edition of The Breakdown.

      Pac released more quality material and he died 4 years into his career. And Poetically and emotionally, Eminem is NOT touching Pac. He may be a better rapper in the technical sense, but Pac is just the better artist. They both speak their minds, but Pac’s poetry is beautiful, dark, harrowing and dope all at once. Eminem has 3 classic albums, Pac has 5, plus a couple of stellar posthumous/side projects (Better Dayz, Resurrection, Thug Life Volume 1 etc.). Eminem fell off after 2002, and I honestly believe that record vendors should offer refunds to the unlucky individuals who purchased Encore and Relapse.

    Em isn't the goat because Em from the future is. Em can't claim the title because he still wants to improve; It's a trap, once you're the greatest the only way left is down, But em raps to beat himself on his last album. Sure he's had his bad tracks, but his improvement is consistent. Em will only admit his status when he reaches his skill ceiling and he'll never admit he's reached a skill ceiling, as Kamikaze proves: He'd rather crash and burn than fade away or take a single step backwards. Other rappers reach a point and stop because they've earned their accolades and wealth, but em doesn't want to settle. He wants to be on top, he wants the notoriety and respect, he wants to not just be a god, but the king of the gods, to be recognized not just by his fans, but also by his haters. He wants the world to begrudgingly admit he is the best.

      Totally agree, soon as you say you're the greatest you have reached your own pinnacle, you are conceding you are as great as you will ever be. I also believe that a true great competes with themselves above all else, Em has to be better then yesterday or it's Em of yesterday that is the goat, not Em today.

    I've been a Hip-Hop fan since the 80's, and sometimes it's hard to figure out where Em lands on my Top 10 list. Maybe it's my age, but it's hard to put him in front of Rakim, KRS, Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap. But man, what a career he's had. He was the biggest selling artist of the 2000's including every and any genre. 2 diamond albums. An Oscar. 10 or more Grammy's. He even "fell off", disappeared for 4 years and came back with a few of the best selling rap albums since 2009. He's definitely in the GOAT conversation.

      I think this is well shown on his track Rap God where he constantly raps that he keeps trying to outdo himself and that his only competition is himself. He knows he spits bars hotter than anyone in the industry so he don't have to claim the title, the title will bestow itself upon him, and then he will outdo that title.

    (Till I collapse, 2002)
    13- Now I would never diss my own momma just to get recognition take a second to listen for who you think this record is dissing

    19- My words are weapons,
    I use them to crush my opponents, these words are weapons, I never show no emotion

    • @raverone909
      @raverone909 3 года назад

      @erik bray Oh man.. are you gonna feel dumb after reading this... If there's only 1 goat, why would Em himself break it down to school you when he says, "And for those of y'all who don't know what a goat is, it means the greatest of all time, and I consider myself ONE OF THOSE, so thank you very much. Here it goes." So wtf are you even debating here? All of this is null and void anyway, since he came out in Homicide as saying, "I'm THE goat". So sit down. And before calling me a genius sarcastically, why don't you take a trip to the genius website where you'll find that Em's comments on "best rapper is white/best golfer black" is Em quoting a narrative that Chris Rock made public, and now he's catching all the flack off of that. Educate yourself, clown.

    • @raverone909
      @raverone909 3 года назад

      @erik bray You must be trolling or don't know how to read, because I directly addressed that as a quote from Chris Rock. It's literally in quotation marks, on genius. You click on it, and it goes into detail: Chris Rock is widely attributed as the originator of this ironic quip, and while it actually may have been Charles Barkley or someone else entirely to come up with it, Rock made it popular by using it as a joke in his shows.
      So Erik.. again, I don't even know why we're arguing here. I believe Em is THE goat. I just think that he's danced around the idea in playful ways without actually saying it.. up until Homicide. Anything beyond that is interpretation/speculation. I don't know what your point is, or what you're even doing here besides semantics.

      People who support nas, get out of here. He had one hot album then fell off. You know what makes a g.o.a.t? Someone who changes the game, and becomes father to the new generation of rappers after him. All the artist we're hearing right now have the upmost respect for Eminem, or biggie, Tupac, but Eminem is the father right now.
      So many mcs got butthurt when he named dropped artists and they weren't the names he dropped, being a rapper I would definitely feel like I reached a level of greatness if Eminem said my music was dope, over nas. He has the track record, the success, he's respected.

    Most awarded, most popular, best rapper of all time. Eminem ladies and gentlemen. Variety of lyrics, unique words, perfect flow, sick beats, word plays, speed, best voice in the game, whispers - sounds good talks - sounds good , screams - sounds good. Also the voice modulation makes songs more attractive. He puts so much emotions in them. You can hear the pure hate in disses, pure love in songs to Hailie. You can also hear the fucking voice cracks in for instance Difficult or When I'm Gone. He perfeclty expresses his emotions with the voice and lyrics.
    Can spit loudly and quickly, making you feel like he has infinite amount of air in his lungs, even after his 40th birthday. Examples? Rap God, Best Friend. There you go.
    Those are some of the reasons he got himself to the Guinness's World Records Book twice, was nominated for a reward over 700 times and won over 500 times including an Oscar and 15 Grammies.
    That's why he got himself 23 million subs and over 9 billion views on YT VEVO. That's why he was the best selling music artist of the first decade of 21st century.
    That's why he still is the best selling hip-hop artist of all time.
    That's why he is the Rap God. That's why he is the best rapper of all time and it doesn't matter if you like it or not, if you admit it or not, if you hate him or love him, if you like another rapper more.
    Eminem is the best rapper of all time and that is as obvious as the fact you will die one day.

It means people loved it and new people keep wanting to hear it and buy it. As an example Thriller by Michael Jackson JUST got 300 weeks and it's the bestselling album of all time. Recovery, TES, and Curtain Call are his albums and he's the only artist to ever accomplish this.

    I am a black person, and I truly believe that the thing that he says at the end about "Do we except a white person as the GOAT of hip hop" as racist. I believe that all people should be truly equal. I'm opposed to all white supremacy and racism towards black people, but I'm also opposed to things that favor black people in any way like affirmative action. Everyone should be 100% equal, no favoritism at all. His saying that about white people leads to black people growing up having a resentment toward white people. And black kids having a resentment toward white kids are just as bad as a white kid hating a black kid.

    • @TheDonYG

      A lot of black people in hip hop that are emcees and normal people outside respect Eminem because Eminem respected hip hop is a black genre a culture, he knew he was lucky, but he also knew after him there will never be another great white rapper. I respect him as a human and as a emcee to the fullest in my opinion he deadass is the greatest ever to be alive because after he dies, there will never a emcee who is as important as he is except Nas and after him Rakim. Trench, Big Daddy Kane, etc. are greats too but they never have captivated the world the way Eminem did. Eminem and Tupac are both equally important Eminem is as popular as Tupac they both changed the world and in Hip Hop, sad thing is this generation of ignorant niggas hate listening to Tupac and Eminem especially Emimem because their drugged up brain from popping all that E cant comprehend his level of complexity in lyricism, and for Tupac they hate to hear real shit real shit to bring awareness to black folks. And im deadass sure, if Tupac were alive today, he would love and respect and work the fuck with Eminem without a doubt. Tupac like to hear the words in rap not the beat, so those who bash Em lowkey for being white but go over and listen to ignorant rap music that has nothing but the beat popping Tupac won't mind verbally bashing those of his skin color that encourage, support, and love ignorant rap music. Tupac hate ignorant rap music, so Eminem's work would be judged fairly and be respected a lot by Pac simply because Eminem remained a lyricist and there's always been a message in his songs, some fictional stories like Stan, and like personal ones which he has dozen of them for ex. "No Love" (which I feel like he can't beat that) but he lowkey cant say he the greatest alive or is rap god because once he claims he is i feel like he has done what he needed to do in HH and that he has nothing else to prove to the world which might make him feel not interested in the art and craft of Hip Hop.

    I'm honestly getting super tired of all this race bullshit. I don't care who you like best and why, just cut the shit with race. If you can't let a white rapper be the best or up there, because he is white then you don't love hip hop and you should leave. Everyone understands where hiphop started and its background so on and so on. The thing is HIP HOP IS GREAT MUSIC! of course people are going to want to make music of any kind as long as its good music.... On top of that hip hop is dying and one of the biggest reasons why is the fucking community. Yall are straight killing yourself is it is so sad to see. Stop pushing people away based on not living the in streets or not being black, because when people see how hostile this community is they are just going to give up on the music. On top of all that, it is even more important that people like the community, because this is one of the most community driven music genres. hip hop is about telling stories/ your feelings while showing off you flow and lyrical prowess. its one of the best things when i find another person who loves the same artists that i do and we tell each other lyrics that gave us goose bumps, because hip hop is supposed to do that and bring people together. Fuck man all yall out here saying "i love tupac!" Then completely ignore half the shit tupac was trying to do/say. I can guarantee if tupac could see the hip hop community right now he would be shaking his head for to many damn reasons..

      We're not killing our own community though and I or anyone else don't have to like nor care about Eminem and his music whatever the reason maybe
      And for you to tell people they aren't hip hop fans and that they need to leave for not liking Eminem when you yourself probably isn't even that knowledgeable about hip hop outside of Eminem is ignorant
      Eminem is not even in my top ten not because he white but because there are ten rappers I prefer over him and I don't care for his music end of story

    • @TenshinhanIsKing
      @TenshinhanIsKing 7 лет назад +8

      Again you can't tell someone to stop liking hip hop just because they don't like Eminem for whatever reason you don't own hip hop and you don't decide what makes someone a fan of it
      SO WHY YOU'RE SITTING HERE TYPING THINGS IN ALL CAPS CHECK YOURSELF
      also making assumptions about what I like and childish insults is the first thing to make me not take you seriously
      Just because I don't agree with your opinion doesn't mean I listen to "mumble" rap

      Listen man eminem is on another planet. Canibus and all those guys are dope but non of them can outrap em. Get over the fact that he's white. If a guy can rap his off, give em his respect and move on. The things he says are absolutely ridiculous.

      King Isaac
      Em is on another planet? Nah if anybody is it would be canibus considering his subject matter. He started the whole 100- 1000 bar songs so out rapping em isnt a factor. Em is good for technical rhyming and internal rhymes but his content isnt out of this world at all. Its quite worldly in fact.
      I heard crazier stuff in hip hop but maybe its how em delivers it to ppl.
      Maybe its because hes white you guys dont take notice when black mcs rhyme out of the norm like tech 9 or bis, heck shia lebeouf just killed nearly every rapper today in a freestyle.

In my eyes he is the most qualified of that title and the best to ever touch a mic, whether you call it emcee or rapper he was a master of both. He had the technical lyricism of a true emcee since Paid in Full, and he covers dozens of socio-political issues on Dont Sweat the Technique with songs like "casualties of war" and "teach the children"

    "Is hiphop ready for a white rapper, to call himself the GOAT"?
    Seriously dude?
    look, I don't wanna seem like I'm an ass kissing fanboy, but Eminem isn't the greatest rapper of all time nah, he's the best selling ARTIST of the last decade and I'm not even talking about rap no more, he sold more than Michael Jackson at that time plus u can't Ignore the fact that Eminem is the first rapper to take rap out of the hood. I know rap was on TV way before Eminem, I'm talking about global shows and record selling. I don't need to state that lyrically non of nowadays rappers can fuck with Eminem, just name a rapper, take his latest album and put it against one song from Eminem's latest album.......
    finally, its 2016 I think its way too late to ask if hiphop is "ready" for a white rapper to be the GOAT cuz that has been proved years ago...

      Are you drunk? Michael Jackson wasn't even the #1 selling artist at that time, Outkast released the #1 selling rap album within that decade so Eminem wasn't even the most popular. Also "Eminem took rap out the hood" I guess Tupac doesn't come to mind for you, does it, Neither does Biggie and The Roots and Outkast. Name 1 album that compares to Eminem's last album lyrically...How about Tetsuo & Youth. Mural alone is more lyrical than any song Eminem has ever made. Just stop.

    • @hazemnasser652
      @hazemnasser652 7 лет назад +5

      +Alex Fon Alright brah first things first Outkast never sold half the records Eminem did, They only had the grammy in 2003 for their album, so thats one year Eminem won like 14 grammys within that decade x"D. With all respect to Pac and biggie but have you ever heard of a Pac or Biggie world tour? nah. Thats what I meant by Eminem Took rap out of the hood. He's been world touring since 2000. Finally idk why but whenever Eminem is brought in the greatest lyricist of all time conversations people bring up Lupe Fiasco, in my opinion Lupe over complicates through his lyrics to stand out and he had that style for a while now and obviously didn't gain half of Eminem's fan base he's not even that mainstream nowadays.....

    Ok and here's by brief argument for him being the goat. People pick one rapper who they feel wins lyrically and then another for flow and another for storytelling and a other for cultural impact, battling, speed ECT. I've never heard ONE person used to take Eminem down in all categories. If you need to gather a collection of people to take down 1 MC how is he not the GOAT?

      Jerry Williams Many acclaimed Rapper's have said for Em to get the respect and acceptance he has, he had to be as good or better than the best. Here's a few names that list him top 5 or have said he's one of the best ever. Andre 3000, Rakim, Jay-Z, Kendrick, Nas, Cole, Kanye, Wayne, Redman, Lupe, Akon, LL, Snoop, Tyler, Earl etc etc. He's the ONLY non black guy who has consistently been put in goat convos. That's earned and earned the hard way.
      He has repeatedly been praised in various areas like Freestyle's, Battling, Features, Disstracks/Beefs, His work with his groups (D12 & BME), speed, 1000 flows, storytelling and as a top tier technical lyrist. When ppl talk sales they like to forget he outsold Every artist from Every genre in the 21st century. His catalog is still one of the most consumed in the world because his music connects.

    He's humble. thats why he doesnt say he's the GOAT. And I dont think that reason is a reason at all for excluding him from being the GOAT. You dont achieve a title like that by calling your own self that. Its the opinions of others that decide who's the GOAT. Im not making any claims myself but Im pretty sure most would consider eminem the GOAT. You can't show me one rapper who doesnt respect eminem's extreme talent. If they dont they're most likely hating. He's receive more appraisal than just about any other rapper that I know of.

    • @lucassabey7555
      @lucassabey7555 7 лет назад +6

      Yeah i was just about to say that. He made GOAT in 2007 when kanye west and lil wayne were huge but during this year Em was heavily on drugs and couldnt make a good song for the life of him. In his 2010 song talking to myself he claims that he wanted to diss kanye and wayne because he was jealous of them and their success. His song GOAT was purely made out of jealousy and from being insecure. Just the truth. Not hating though, eminem is no doubt in my mind the best mc to touch the mic.

    • @twistedspectacle
      @twistedspectacle 7 лет назад +4

      I saw that interview too! Well put.
      I think everybody has two personas in life. You have your work persona and who you really are, because fact is that most people wouldn't be working at the places they work at if they didn't wear some kinda facade to work masking who they are.
      On the mic Em's ready to kill it every time. When he's not working... he's humble as fuck. I think he has a strong sense of loyalty to the game and those close to him; including those he looked up to growing up. I love it when he always compliments the veterans and shows his respect.
      Every great athlete thought/think they're the best during their time, I think the difference between some is they let that go to their head and their work persona becomes their life persona. Having the ability to disassociate oneself between the two 'personas' is what I think Em is able to do very well, which leads to his humbleness. I mean... how annoying would it be if Em had a comparable persona to that of Mayweather...?

    I was introduced to rap through Eminem, and today has been 6-7 years since. Ive discovered tons of new rap from old-school new-school “your neighborhood mixtape god” school Ive listened to it all. Still my opinion hasnt changed, he is still the most lyrical, technical to ever be on a mic. His new shit may not be as good but you have to give it to the guy, he’s at least in top 5 right now and there’s no changing that.
