    I have the Nikon trifecta but the only problem I have with the 14-24mm (great lens) is that it can't take filters unless you get an expensive setup for it. I usually have the 16-35 or 18-35 with me. The 18-35 is a great relatively inexpensive underrated lens. Great video.

    hi Tom .... a thumbs up from me .....you got it all right .... 16-35 F4 is also a good lens though your 14-24 f2.8 is better and expensive - same with your 70-200 nikon f2.8, one could do with cheaper Sigma 70-200 f2.8 OS model as well ..... for 24-70 f2.8 the options are few and Nikon non-vr version with metallic body is good enough ..... I mention these lenses as these are economical nothing other than that - what i like like about your video is focal length range given and use of polarizer filter and drone .... thanks

    Great advice on the Hoodman Loope, I've been on the lookout for something like this and will definitely get one. Also, I got the same lens setup and try to have these in my backpack at all times, although it's a lot of weight and I usually regret it before long. I always take an additional lens with me: the AF-S Nikkor 35mm/1.8G ED, because I found this is the focal length that I typically shoot at and, despite its budget price (around €500), beats the 24-70mm in terms of sharpness every time. If I can't bring the 14-24mm (150mm filter system adds even more weight!) I might leave the 24-70mm at home as well and go with the 24mm/1.4G ED, the 35mm/1.8G ED and the 70-200mm/2.8E ED VR. Taking primes isn't about max aperture, it's about sharpness first and foremost. The 14-24mm/2.8G ED and the 70-200mm/2.8E ED VR are the sharpest zooms around, but the 24-70mm/2.8E ED VR is not.

    • @tomarcherphoto
      @tomarcherphoto  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Thorsten. Interesting advice too, I havent personally used the 35, I have a Sigma Art 35 which is incredible for portraits but I just dont like it for landscapes. I would definitely agree with you about the sharpness of a prime, I just personally find that the flexibility of focal lengths far outweighs sharpness issues (maybe partly because of the quality of the D850 sensor and the fact that Im using top end zooms anyway). I will certainly have a play with the 24 mm F1.4 though, I havent used that before!

      @thorstenwestheiderphotogra7722 6 лет назад

    Great video Tom 👌🏼 As a fellow Nikon user I’m a bit bummed out that we don’t get a 16-35mm f2.8 like canon guys have. I feel it’s a good in-between from the 14-24 and 24-70 that also allows ND filters which the 14-24 with that huge bulge doesn’t. Do you have any recommendations or a wider that 24mm that is fast and allows filters? I’ve been looking around and it’s killing me! 😂😭

    • @tomarcherphoto
      @tomarcherphoto  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks a lot Andreas! Yeah I feel you on that one. You can actually get a filter holder for the 14 - 24, its just very bulky. But I think it's worth it as it's definitely the best super wide angle from Nikon.

      16-35 f4 is an option

    • @calebe16
      @calebe16 6 лет назад +2

      man, seriously. I don't have the money, but if I had I would still don't follow the advices Tom gave.
      16-35mm f/4 is a beautiful lens, it is sharp, and lighter than the 14-24mm. Also you don't need a f/2.8 glass.
      The same for the 70-200, I would buy an f/4 version for landscape. And I would prefer to have just a 50mm f/1.8 instead of the 24-70.
      You don't need this bunch of glass, you need to be lightweight to hike and found the landscape to shoot.
      Tom might be rich, or sponsored by nikon.
      With 16-35, 50 and 70-200 you have most of things covered, just use your feet for some little adjustments.
      Also, the 16-35 accepts filters.
      And for landscape you will usually be shooting at f5.6-f16 depending on the lens and what you want. It is very unusual to shoot less than f/4

    • @thorstenwestheiderphotogra7722
      @thorstenwestheiderphotogra7722 6 лет назад

      If you shoot landscapes, you don't need the f/2.8 aperture at all, the 16-35mm/4 is the way to go. I used to have that lens (the idea being to replace the 14-24mm/2.8 and get rid of the 150mm filter system in one fell swoop), but sold it again because it can't compare with the 14-24mm/2.8 in terms of sharpness, plus it showed heavy vignetting with a LEE 100mm filter system because of the polarizer not being close enough to the front element. No need to be envious of the Canon guys, we have the 14-24mm/2.8G ED (that, in turn, Canon shooters are envious of).

    The 100-400mm has replaced my 70-200mm for landscape. The zoom range is so useful for landscape and its compression blows the 70-200 out of the water.

      I came across a video that you commented on some time ago, it had to do with best lens for landscapes, you commented that you found the 70-200mm lens to short and prefer the 100-400mm, while the 70-200mm works great as a long event lens, I also find that the 100- 400 on a crop body makes a good wildlife lens it also works well for distant landscape photography, I use it often to photograph lighthouses that are located in the middle of the Hudson river in New York state.

    My budget is pretty low. Do you reccomend the Nikon 10-20mm and the Samyang 14mm? Right now i have only the basic 18-55 and i'd like something quite wide.. i know the samyang is a fixed focal-length lens but the aperture is quite good for the price.

    • @tomarcherphoto
      @tomarcherphoto  6 лет назад

      Hey! I have used the 10 - 20 and I think its a great lens for the price. I havent personally used the Samyang but Ive heard decent things. If you are interested in landscapes then the aperture is less important, unless you are concentrating on night shots. I think the extra flexibility of the focal range on the Nikon would be more helpful. Best of luck :)

    Given that is only a 10mm span. I’m thinking more about something like the

      Thank you Tony. I think the Sigma 14mm art is a really great lens. If you have a high res sensor then Im sure it would still work great to get that and crop in. Actually the AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.8G ED is cheaper and better, see for example photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-35mm-f1-8g-ed (scroll down for comparison with the Sigma). I try to steer clear of Sigma for quality reasons (stuck aperture, poor AF to name just a few) and stick to Nikon glass. If someone asks me for third party recommendations I usually recommend Tamron, they've released some remarkable good lenses lately.

      Tofu: I agree that these are expensive lenses. However, all three have been around for many years and so its quite easy to buy them "pre-owned" at much lower prices from camera shops or Ebay. For example the 70-200 f2.8 can now be bought for approx. £800 (US $1047) LESS than it's original price.

Even fewer would be prepared to meet the costs be it new or second hand. @@vinylmaverick8044 I hope you're feeling better than when you wrote your last comment. I'm not attempting to answer for Tom, but a lot of enthusiasts have the money and/or motivation to buy the best. While the "holy trinity" (I hate that name) is well known, they're not always recommended for landscape photography and another opinion, even one as acerbic as yours, is always welcome.

    You just adviced us to buy the "holy trinity"
    These lenses are very expensive and heavy.
    Their f/4 options are as sharp, lighter, much less expensive.
    People need to be light to travel, and if something goes wrong, it's less money lost. Also, the economy made by purchasing the f4 can got you money for an awesome tripod, filter kit, bag, remote shutter, etc.
    I did not like the video because it seems like a nonsense choice to buy these lenses.
    I think you should say why these lenses instead of the cheaper, lighter, lenses which have the only drawback of beeing 1,5 stop slower than these, which is a nobrainer for landscape.
    These are awesome lenses for events, weddings, sports etc. Not landscape.

      Calebe Teles this video is called the best lenses, not the cheapest or the most economical. It’s also my opinion as a professional. I find them sharper and it’s important to me to have the wider aperture for night photography and for various other reasons. But thanks for you opinion

      got it. make sense.
      But also, to the best, it should help you make the great images, right?
      So it seems like there should be a balance between quality, weight etc. specially when the image quality can be virtually the same.
      About night photography, it is a good point.
      And I know it is your opinion. I am just discussing what should be really considered the best.
      If there are other options which could give you the same image, costing less, allowing you to use filters, weighting less, than it would be the best. Don't you agree?
