The way you explain the way you look at a scene reminds of when I first read Freeman Patterson's book Photography for the Joy of It back in the late 70s. Thanks for the trip back in time and reminding me why I like this hobby in the first place, even if I can't always turn what I was "seeing" in the scene into what comes out of the camera.

you are a brave person. i sort of know i don't use others, but i still bring them to feel "safe". Not a lot more, just the 18-55 and 16mm prime.
XT-2, 10-24 and 70-200 here also, plus the 60mm macro because I love to take close-ups and details.
I've got a Canon EF 16-35mm and a 70-200mm. I literally never use anything else... like, ever! I love them!

I totally agree, I have the 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200. I always leave the 24-70 at home not because it is heavy but I never use it. I have a 35mm which came with my mirrorless camera and im starting to love it.
Certainly made me re-evaluate my lens choice to carry. Using a Canon 40D with crop sensor, I now carry just the 10-22mm, and a 70-200mm. It has made making the choice of which lens to use so simple. My legs are my best zoom that I have, as you say, walking nearer or further away. Yet another thought provoking video, really enjoy this channel. Thanks.
Using your legs to get closer to a subject to get your photo helps but depending upon the subject and the location your photographing in, walking closer may not be an option.
This video crystalised everything I was thinking about in my current quest to transition to another system. I will be doing exactly what you suggested.

Definitely agree with the two lens setup, it's been working great for me as well.
I would only put a condition on it though: it is the best setup when photography is the main/sole purpose of the outing. But when it's secondary (e.g. backpacking trip, or an active outing that includes climbing, skiing or very rough terrain/conditions), then I would rather not fiddle with lens switching and keep the camera close. In these circumstances, best shots are taken quickly, no tripod, etc. But it's still landscape photography :)
That's very true. And the other side of that is that when the trip involves photography and video are the main purpose of the trip you need more than 2 lenses. I shoot most of my video with a mid range zoom....the lens I use least for photography
Same for me. I bought Tamron 17-28 and 70-300 for my a7c. I think these two bring everything i need.

Great video. I totally agree. I am using my 10-24mm wideangle Fuji lens 95% of the time.
Eye opener. I always carry to much weight with me. The lens I use the most is my 24-105. I also have a 17-35 and a70-200 which I hardly use. This video learned me to leave my 24-105 at home and try to be more creative with my other lenses. Thans you for that.

This video is incredible. I recently got the XT2 and was struggling when deciding which lenses I wanted to start off with. Seeing someone like you show their practical use of different lenses was exactly what I needed to help decide which lens I want to go for first. Your reasoning is also precisely why landscape photography has always fascinated me - it's seeing the beautiful world in a new "light". Amazing video.

Same here. I carry my 6D, 17-40 F4L , 70-200 F4L and nisi V5 kit. It’s really all anyone needs.
Very thought provoking Andy. An extension of the “less is best” philosophy. I recall from my wonderful days of Olympus OM system film photography that I travelled the Scottish Highlands really light with a 24mm and 100mm. I’m now a Happy Fuji X system photographer looking forward to the 8-16mm that I will pair with existing 50-140mm plus a 1.4 extender (which presents no weight issue). Thanks for the video!

Hi Andy. I currently use my 16mm and 35mm lenses more than my 18-55mm kit lens. I hadn’t really considered adding a telephoto to my kit but now I think I’ll look out for a decent 55-200mm second hand. Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the comment. More than 50% of my landscape images are telephoto, and it's not a lens I could imagine living without one
I only own two lenses. 20-35 f2.8L and the plastic fantastic 50mm 1.8. I shoot landscape and local music venues in LA. Haven't needed more. I use a Canon 5D Classic for my body.
You also gotta keep in mind, once you develop a style you'll start to be comfortable with a specific lens or two and you won't "need" additional lenses.
It's very true about developing a style that then becomes harder to step out of. I have a partner who refuses to shoot wide and only uses a mid-range zoom, and I appreciate his dedication to it, but I often find myself standing next to him in the mountains and thinking "I couldn't shoot here with that lens", but of course that means "I couldn't shoot in-the-style-that-I'm-most-familiar-and-comfortable-with-here". He clearly feels just as strongly in a different way.
@@AndyMumford I haven't decided if my style around two lenses is limiting or not, but it's real easy on the wallet haha
Excellent point - use focal lengths that provide a viewpoint other than the human eye. And I'm all for traveling light. Easier and more enjoyable hike, and not agonizing/wasting time (as the light changes...) over what lens to use. I always enjoy your videos and thought perspective. Thank you, Andy.

I've got the 10-24mm, 16-55mm and the 50-140mm to go with my X-T2. I couldn't be happier with those 3 lenses for my landscape work. I do fantasize though about purchasing the 100-400mm lens.
I have the same lenses and also the one you dream about. and also the X-T2. Very happy. I work in Patagonia.
Finally someone talking about telephoto lenses for other things than sports. I found that often when I am shooting wide with my 12mm crop or even with the 30mm that the background like mountains are too mushed together. Also changing around lenses between two primes all the time can get exhausting pretty quickly. Thinking about getting a 18-105(crop) lens now and take that with me together with my 12mm. Sadly Sony only produces a f4 in that zoom range..
Also good comments on taking pictures outside of the focal range that people are used to see stuff.

Great video Andy! For surveying the focal lengths you use most frequently, I would not recommend scrolling through the full list as in this video. Instead, create Lightroom smart filters to group focal length ranges in folders. When deciding when length lens to purchase next, I created 4 folders:

Very nice images and video, Andy! As a Fujiflm X-System landscape and product photographer, I can certainly empathize with carrying too much gear! When I got into this system 5 years ago, my first (and only) lens was the superb Fujinon XF16-55 f/2.8 Zoom. I got this lens over the "kit" XF18-55 for a few reasons...superb sharpness, fast AF, and most importantly, the extra 2mm at the wide end (35mm equivalent = 24mm)! I didn't miss the OIS of the much less costly 18-55 because, as a landscape shooter obsessed with sharpness and detail, I use a solid tripod 100% of the time, so OIS is moot. That said, I realize that this is the "mid-range" zoom range, so I also use the XF55-200 that you mentioned, which is also quite sharp at all focal lengths (slightly less so at 200mm, but fine when using optimum apertures (f/8-11). So, my travel kit could be a 2 lens kit consisting of the XF16-55 and XF55-200. When travelling VERY light, I carry the XF23 f/2, and Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 Fish-Eye II only, realizing that those 2 focal lengths are quite limiting indeed. The lens I covet now (but regrettably not in the budget at the moment) is the Fujinon XF8-16 f/2.8. To your point, I can see the XF8-16 and the XF55-200 as a versatile 2 lens landscape kit. Thanks for making me think about an optimal focal length kit!

Thanks for endorsing all of this and your tips Andy - I'm a newbie photographer on a big learning journey. I got my first DSLR a year ago after shooting only on iphone and cheap compacts previously and have found for practicality and ease of use/ cutting down on weight, that I use a 10 - 18 mm and 18 -135 mm most with my Canon 1300D - I can shoot most things I need on these two. I also have 2 primes a 50mm and an 85mm and a 75 -300mm zoom but I find I use the first two more than anything else.

Great video! I keep the EF 16-35mm f4/L IS USM and EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM in my hard-case with my Canon 5DS R. Also have the EF 17-40mm vf/4L USM and use that once in a while as well.

Another well-reasoned video Andy. For me personally I frequently use the 70 - 200mm focal length range. I seldom shoot ultra-wide and I think a lot of people struggle to achieve good compositions with ultra-wide lenses. Like you I don't shoot much in the mid-range zoom territory.

Hi Andy,
I found my sweet spot to be 20mm-35mm (ref. to full frame sensor). I also rely on mid-range for more intimate landscapes as opposed to dramatic, with a smattering of telephoto. I tended to avoid wider than 20mm because I didn't like the distorted look. After observing your work, I think I need to revisit the ultra-wide. Great job!

I have been there before when I travel with several lenses and sometimes might not even use them. As the way you travel you get to know what you really use or not and minimize the weight. Zoom lenses are really good as one lens in which might provide a wide angle and possibility of telephoto. Good video. !

Dear Andy, Thanks for a great review, as a pro Shooter for 45 Years we exactly share our proven equipment needs, a Fuji 10-24mm and 55-200mm for the Field. I still shoot Nikons 28-105mm AFD and 80-200mm Ai N series plus the 55mm f2.8 Macro ( The Best 50 ). Again, My compliments your advice and teaching ability for the beginner and Novice Photographers all are impressive. Recently I bought Fuji's new 16-80mm after your review and thank you. very useful Tip. I always thought that I use the whole zoom range but a look in lightroom showed the same effect. 99% were shot at min and max zoom.

I'm not a landscape photographer but I love your videos. Funnily enough, I also favour the more extreme angles over the midrange, with a clear pref for the wide end. I hate changing lenses but because I like keeping the camera in my (little) hands, I'm having to figure out a set of affordable, lightweight options. At the moment I'm thinking of Fuji 14mm, Fuji 50mm and Samyang 85mm f1.8 (manual).

Currently I only have the 24-70mm lens on Sony a7riii. I definitely want to take some photos with both the wide angle and telephoto lens in Hong Kong soon.
I have used everything from 10-24 ,16mm , 23mm , 35mm, 56mm , 16-50, 18-55 , 18-35, 50-140mm last year. all fuji lenses. What I used to do was shoot almost everything on around 50mm. But I seem to be getting that focal length boring. Closing up on people especially create problems for me at the post work. More processing to be made and less interesting. I am now favoring wider end on people and tele end on landscape. It is kinda weird. But thats what I do now.

I think the 10-18mm, the 50mm and the 55-250mm really cover everything I need for my 200D.
Really enjoyed your video. I shoot landscape and birds. I started using 2 lens because I got lazy hiking with my back pack. Now I travel with Canon 55-250 and either 18-55 or 28-105. I am quite happy with the results and find I can go further traveling lighter.
For my bird I usually take my Cannon 70-300 and set down and shoot off a mono pod. I have 2 canon's a EOS Rebel T3 and EOS T5i.
Starting out I was probably the biggest fan of the 24-105 sigma back on my dslr days. Gave me almost everything I needed. Then I looked at meta data and I shot at 24 or 105 90% of the time. And knew I cropped those 105s quite a bit because it wasnt enough. This was the exact combo I went with with sony. 17-28 and the 70-180. Now in crop mode can get me near to 300. Cheers

Interesting! If I choose to take only 1 lens then it is the 24-70. I can blend 2 images if I need wider. I also get a small telephoto. If I take 2 lenses then the 16-35 & 70-200 are the ticket. I love your thoughts on presenting the view from a new perspective. Well done.

Thanks. This make complete sense to me. The only question left for me is what lens to own, as opposed to what lenses to bring along on any given day. I'm toying with selling the 24-70. Can't make up my mind. The reality is I rarely bring it along anymore.
It is tricky. Since i made this video my shooting style has changed and I now find I use the mid range a little more than the wide angle. I would hang onto the 24-70 for a while to see before you decide whether to sell it or not.
Good tips and although I agree with those two zooms, I would also pack a nifty 50, just to fill the gap. They don't weigh much.

Depends on the landscape of course. Not intending to print? Olympus system. Big prints? Fuji 50 and “ kit” zoom. Or minimalist? Agfa Isoltte III and Portra 160.

I may be tempted to get this set up as an addition to my medium format or large format hiking kit for moments when large format is not practical and to function as a spot meter and video recorder

Great video Andy! When I came to Fuji I was under the impression that my main lenses would be the 16-55mmm and 50-140mm which I use all the time. But they are heavy compared the ones mentioned in the the vlog. Also I'm not convinced that I get any better quality as all the Fuji lenses are pretty good. I recently picked up a fuji Xc (consumer) lens 16-50mm for some street stuff to use on my X-T20 and was surprised at how good it performed when compared to 16-55mm. Its plastic and light but the quality is good.
Hi Jim, thanks for the comment. I've not used that lens, but it seems Fuji don't really make a bad lens. I often have the 18-55 kit lens with me...not for photography, but I use it on the X-T20 for shooting video when I need to film myself while I'm using the camera. It's actually really good for a kit lens.
Totally agree and I’m using 2 lenses with LUMIX G9. I love minimal simple compositions and the 45-200 (90-400) is great for me. That with the 12-60 (24-120) I’m happy. Although something like the 8-18 (16-36) would be more like what you’re suggesting the equivalent 24mm of 12-60 is wide enough for me. But I may get a cheap light wide prime at some point.

Came to this after being on something of a lens merry-go-round the last few years, switching from the 5DIV to the R5. Having too many options and too much weight has led me to slim the gear down considerably but still feel as though I'll be able to capture pretty much anything I want. So I have the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 (for nightscape/astro as well) and the RF 70-200mm f/4 (really light and compact). I'd tried the RF 24-105mm f/4, thinking I could just go down to one lens, but when I took it on a hike recently, it felt neither wide enough for some scenes, or long enough for others, like a jack-of-all-trades lens - so it has been traded in.
I can totally relate to that. The ultra wide zoom and tele are a perfect compilation. Do it all lenses like the 24-105mm are never wide enough for me either and don't work as an option
@@AndyMumford I like the wider lens too. It encourages me to think more creatively about the compositions (foreground/mid/background) whereas I often feel shooting between 35-70mm is a little bit point-and-shoot with the scene in front of me. The 70-200 likewise makes me look more closely around me rather than just the scene in front of me. And I have to say, a good phone camera covers the middle focal range nicely for standard snaps
I agree, though having many photos against the short/long limits of a lens suggest you were looking for less/more reach but either not enough to change lenses or do a panorama. I agree with traveling light and having the energy to think clearly.

It's an interesting thought about "looking for more or less reach" because I tend to use the lenses at their ends (with the exception of the long end of my telephoto), but I'm not sure if it's true, or it's certainly not something I'm consciously aware of. In the field it feels as though the end of a lens is where I start composing, and if I can get something that works then I don't move the zoom. For example in my life I've owned a 17-35mm (full frame) and I never thought that wasn't wide enough, but then it broke and I replaced it with a 16-35mm. I don't remember really noticing the difference, I just shot at the wide end. When I switched to APS-C, I started using 10mm (15mm full frame equivalent) and again, didn't feel that it was wider...it was just "my wide focal length", and I also have a 9mm in my bag, which I carry sometimes if I' going to be shooting aurora or stars (it's an f2.8 lens) but I never use it for regular shots...as in, I never think that my 10mm isn't wide enough so I'll use the 9mm.

Great advice. I used to travel with a crop body + an armada of lenses. I recently jumped to FF and I have my general lens (RF 24-105 f4) and I am looking to get a 100-400 Sigma and a nice, wide lens (which I still haven't decided on yet). To be fair, I also carry around a 40mm or 50mm pancake / stm lens when travelling because you never know if you'll need one (lens breaks, or just too heavy for the day) and they're so light and easy to put in a pocket.

I use a 6x6 camera with a 50mm, 80mm, 150mm and a 2x tele converter. Thats all i need. :)

New sub for you mate great points well made. I use a full canon kit for the paper with lenses ranging from 16-35 2.8 right up to a 500 f4 so when I’m out on personal vlogs I travel as light as possible a fuji x100f a few filters a light tripod an iPhone for vlogging etc BUT when I’m heading into the mountains I’ll drag the canon or Nikon gear out with the 70-200 just to pick out the peaks. Im almost ready for a personal webby too so will use your square space link cheers Paul 📷❤️✊️

When I was on the Canon FF shooting landscape I had only 24 Tilt and Shift, 24-105 f/4, 70-400 f/4 this work very well for me. While on Fuji GFX I settled for 32-64 f/4 for landscape, missing a zoom though and T&S. Then for travel photography when was in China and India, usually I settle on primes 24mm or 35mm. I guess that difference between travel and landscape in terms of gear. But overall takeaway has to be travel light and bring a flask when hiking :-)
Awesome video Andy, as always! Well produced and gorgeous footages and images as well. I use pretty much two lenses on my landscape photography and the images metadata in Lightroom are a great way to better understand which lenses we use the most. At this moment there is only one location where I need the midrange focal length zoom and for a specific purpose, but I'll tell you about that in December :) Have a nice one my friend and horns up for good contents!

Great tips as usual Andy - when I'm going to be trekking a bit I carry three lenses and one TC: The Fujinon 10-24 & 50-140mm zooms, the Fujinon 35mm f2 prime and the 1.4TC - the latter two are small and light, and having the 35mm (~50mm full frame) helps me with those odd times when you do want something in the normal range - I often use it for panoramic shots. Sometimes I find the 140mm just a bit short - hence the 1.4TC. If I used the 55-200 I wouldn't have that problem.
That's a nice set up Alan. I do love that 50-140mm lens. It's sharper than the 55-200, but it's bigger and heavier (bearing in mind nowadays I always have a drone with me, along with the batteries for that and an extra camera for video) so I've sacrificed the quality of it to save weight and space in my bag.

I, too, use the under appreciated 55-200, though in combination with the 16 for my wide angle in my landscape photography. I use this kit only if shooting by myself, or at most, with another photographer. Otherwise, if it's just a trip I happen to be on and one in the presence of non-photographers, I skip this and only use my X-100f. It's taken me years of less-than-great experiences to finally let go of FOMO (the fear of missing out) because I don't have every lens I own with me! Thus, I'm free from the "tyranny of photography". Traveling light is so freeing.

I have come to the very same opinion, for landscape photography. If you do a lot of people photography, you will most likely treasure the mid-range (e.g. 24-70mm). I recently got a Z7 and will acquire the 14-30mm and the 70-200mm zoom lenses. I do carry a 1.8 20mm prime lease for Astro/night photography. I think a part of my reasoning has to do with my being over 75 years of age. It seems all my friends (photography club members) are doing the same as we seek to lighten our camera bags. And then there are those other things we are beginning to “need” such as a Mavic 2 Pro and an OSMO Pocket. We can only carry so much! BTW ... love your website.

I have a Nikon crop sensor camera with three lenses, as you described: 12-24mm; 16-80mm; 70-300mm. I'm going to try going out with the wide-angle and telephoto lenses and see how that works. Unfortunately, I don't have a 55-200mm so the spread between my 46mm and 70mm leaves a gap of 20mm which might be too much... but who knows, maybe this won't matter. Thank you for your insights!

Dear Andy I hope you got well back to Lisbon. I keep saying that your teachings are the best that I see around RUclips. I would like to ask your opinion of 100-400 for landscape photography. Thank you once again for sharing your knowledge.
The 100-400mm is a fantastic lens, it's really sharp and has an incredible range. My only issue with it for landscapes is that I shoot a lot between 55 and 100 so it would mean carrying it as an extra lens...and it's pretty big and heavy
Hey, Andy. You might already know this, but if you shoot video in aperture priority on your Fujis, you won't get that stepping in the exposure. I'm not sure if you used your X-T2 or X-T20 to film this, but at least the X-T2 is capable of smooth exposure transitions, as long as you're in aperture priority. Great video and even better photos, as always.
Hi Brad. Thanks for that. I was using the X-T2 and I tend to shoot video in manual most of the time to prevent this kind of thing, but I have big windows right next to me and on the day I recorded this there was high winds with intermittent heavy cloud with sunshine, so the clips were swinging from being severely over exposed to really underexposed as the clouds passed infront of the sun. It's not a situation I'd dealt with before, and probably got it wrong. When I switched to automatic I wanted to keep the frame rate set, so the shutter speed was set to manual, and I was concerned that in auto aperture it would open up, reduce the depth of field and I'd drop out of focus (I had the lens in manual focus as the lens I was using tends to hunt a little in AF and switch between my hands when I move them and my face). So in the end I decide on auto ISO to try to keep the exposure balanced and the results were the stepping that you see. Next time I'll take your advice and use auto aperture priority...although hopefully I'll have more consistent light.
