I have become an ardent Andy Mumford fanboy. Whatever he talks about goes straight into my brain. Nor artifice, no mumbo-jumbo. Just wisdom and experience.
This is really a masterclass, yes. Andy, your videos are really pure bliss, very nice photo, calm tone and extremly good advice. I love that you do and I understand your switch, I went from Canon FF to Fuji XF and I just love it....a lot!
I rarely ever watch long videos on RUclips but your thorough and informative explanation is the reason why I watch up to the very end. They always leave me with new information that I wouldn't otherwise get from other creators. For that, your channel really stands out. Keep 'em coming.
I am an experienced photographer and I learned a lot from this video and smiled a few times on some of the teaching points which I had to learn myself through hard experience (there was no internet when I started...) -Most youtubers are young, inexperienced and not particularly good photographers. This video is packed with knowledge and some seriously good imagery, I could certainly learn a thing or two from Mr. Mumford. A big thumbs up on this one.
I've never seen so much valuable information packed into 27 minutes. Thanks for such a well done video. Your presentation is so well done and your work is absolutely beautiful.
That was a tour de force. Something to watch over and over. Getting ready to upgrade from the X-E3 / 18-55mm I have taken backpacking since 2018 to an XT5 and likely the 10-24mm wide angle. I've had to take a fair number of overlapping vertical shots to stitch together to capture a scene.
Andy, I just can't express how useful is your channel. I love landscape photography but I never could achieve the results I wanted and I never understood the reason. Your videos just resolved so many doubts I had, THANK YOU!
This is a great video about wide lenses and landscape photography. Just what I wanted to know without any unnecessary information. Generally speaking Andy's videos are great from their content and the way of presenting perspective. I wish Andy's workshops were closer to Asia region to visit them.
I’ve never seen an informative video of wide angle lens nature photography than this! I’ve learnt so much! Thank you for that! The way you are talking about this things makes very easy to understand how this type of photography works. I got so much inspiration from your videos! I’m really happy that I found your channel! One more times thank you for your videos!
I own a 15mm ƒ/4 lens (APS-C) and was getting lovely landscape photos with it, so I saved up and bought a 12-24mm ƒ/4 (also APS-C). The wider, the better, thought I. But I get so few keepers with it, and it weighs so much more than my 15mm prime. I've returned to this video of yours a few times, and each time I absorb a bit more wisdom. You've got lots to share. It may simply be that I'm a "wide-angle" but not a "super-wide-angle" photographer, but hope springs eternal! Thank you for the charming and informative videos.
Every single video you post it's so well thought out and explained. It's like I'm attending a masterclass or being in one of your workshops (one day hopefully). Thank you so so much for sharing your knowledge and experience! Keep up the good work, greetings from Scotland!
thx Andy lots of great info in your tutorial, just got my first wide angle lens a canon 10-18mm for my mirrorless camera, and off on a cruise in three weeks time so lots of water involved.
Wow...what a half hour of teaching. Thank you so much for this! It never occurred to me that distortion affected horizontal shots more than vertical and more than that, vertical shots actually benefit from the distortion on many subjects!
I don’t know that I can add much to any of the comments below it is truly a master class. I finally was able to get an L bracket for my XT four I’ll be headed out tomorrow with a new insight with my 10 to 24. thank you again for sharing your knowledge Andy
The fact that all this information is available for free is amazing. I have learned so much in just one video. Thank you very much Andy. It's a shame that your workshops are currently all sold out
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you found the video useful. As for workshops, everything for 2023 is sold out but there are still places for 2024 😉 I’ll be doing most of what I’m doing in 2023 with the addition of Patagonia, so if there’s anything you’re particularly interested in, drop me an email and I’ll add your name to the priority list.
Yes! Wide-angles used well let you capture “hyper-real” photos - capturing images the eye can never see, but our mind can imagine. It’s awesome, amazing video
Truly a brilliant informative video and the images, oh my! Very inspirational! Made me want to get out there and shoot. Thx Andy! you're the best of the best!
This was a perfectly timed video Andy. I've just bought the Fuji 10-24mm (partly motivated by your equally informative review of this lens) and have really benefited from your advice in this video. As ever, your use of annotation to illustrate the points in your own images is hugely helpful. A true masterclass packed in to less than 30 mins. Thank you.
Andy, thanks for taking the time to explain so much! Love seeing your images on youtube. Your style and pictures have always been an inspiration to me. Cheers!
Blimey that was a very powerful case for the vertical format with a wide angle lens. I've not seen such powerful examples and clear description to make the point. Lots of ideas to play with, thank you.
This is the first time I've ever commented on a youtube clip. Had to because this is the best wide angle advice I've ever seen. It took me 30 years to partially figure out what you covered here and the other 2/3rds I learnt in 27 minutes from you. I'm adding 4 of your workshops to my bucket list on the strength of this video. Just have to wait till we are allowed to travel again.....
Thank you Andrew, that's a really lovely comment and one I enjoyed reading a lot. I'd love to have you on one of the workshops at some point. Which places interest you, I can add you to the contact list
Andy, I've watched quite a few of your videos, and they are all top knotch, thank you so much. This one you did on Wide Angle has to be a top pick for anyone who is expanding their system to include such a lens, or, like myself, the owner of one with a general knowledge of what to do with it, but when on location, struggling to actually put that into practice. I've got such a lot of new ideas (to me) regarding this which I hope to put into practice. I'll try to get onto one of your workshops in the near future. Fantastic presentation and above all, content in these videos, please keep making them :)
Superb and highly informative video. Clearly explained and brilliantly illustrated for each point you make. Thank you for giving your knowledge so generously and for making g such watchable and educational videos. I have a soft spot for the Vasco da Gama bridge (I live up in Obidos for half the year) - always a magnificent sight to drive across.
Thank you Sir I have been researching quite a bit of late and honestly stumbled across your series of tutorials while researching filter use & exposure. Finally a tutorial that was clear , concise and fluff free. This tutorial on wide angle use has finally answered quite a bit for myself and my capture preferences. I found very early on that I often used portrait position rather then traditional landscape and even became almost apologetic for doing so. I simply felt it offered my images better depth and portrayed my feelings about an image better. Your explanation has finally helped my understanding of why. Thank you for sharing your photographic skills and understanding so others may benefit from your experience! I now have another teacher along with Mr Joe Cornish & Mr Charlie Waite et al. Kind regards Chris C
Wonderful and informative ! Everything covered in rhe most lucid way . L brackets are vital accesories to have along with filters while shooting such landscapes and I hope u would agree.
Thanks a lot, your help for those of us, who, as in my case, don't have a theoretical background on photography, is unvaluable. Please keep helping others as you do. Amazing photos of amazing places of our planet .
Wow, thank you Andy! I am a professional music and school division photographer, so shooting subjects comes much easier. Landscapes however are a big hole in my game. This video popped up on Reddit this morning and you explained things so fantastically clear, it made a big difference for me. I'm headed to Great Falls on the Potomac River on election day armed with a much better idea of how to handle it, thank you!
Another great video, Andy! i like your honest and all-encompassing approach when you discuss things. One day I want to join you on a tour, but they seem to get booked very quickly! LOL! Take care.
"... I think I've covered just about everything..." You certainly have! Kudos on this video. I've been using 14mm on my Nikon FF, and every... single... thing... I've run into / figured out with that focal length got mentioned. Each one of your videos makes one of your workshops more certain in my future. BTW/FWIW, I've switched from a Nikon 14-24 to a Samyang/Rokinion 14 2.4. 'SP'. It's half the price, a pound lighter, half a stop faster and does a better job on night sky shots (no coma).
Thank you! This made me decide to carry my Samyang 12mm on future hikes! So far I have tried to manage with Fuji 18-135, but looking at your work made me realize that some scenes would really benefit from 12mm...and not just night scenes. And the presentation was very easy to follow. Not too fast, not too slow, a lot of concrete examples.
Fantastic video. Really comprehensive. Love the way you demonstrate each point with examples of good and bad. I find that really helps me understand what to look for in the field. Thanks Andy
Thank you Andy that was a fantastic tutorial. I have just purchased a Tokina 12-28 for my old DX Nikon 300. Having fun self discovering many of the points you raised. I was just about to purchase a moderately priced polariser filter to enhance sky detail contrast and better reflection control. I am now reconsidering given they can have an adverse effect on uniform blue skies. But maybe that isn't a problem in the UK. The video was longer than most others on the subject, but it was so interesting that it seemed too short! Great stuff thanks.
Thanks so much for the comment Tom, really glad you found it useful. Have fun with the wide angel lens...I tend to use a polariser much more with a telephoto than I do with the wide angle
Andy - Thought to let you know how impressed I was by your tutorial on wide angle shooting given you are doing it with a crop sensor. I suppose you do that to avoid the size and weight which is difficult to bear with air travel. Kudos and thanks for compiling these tips into a very illustrative guide!
Thanks so much, glad you found it useful. I switched from full frame to Fuji about 4 years ago, partly for size and weight on long hikes, and partly because I just found the cameras more intuitive. I've never regretted it and feel if anything, it's had a positive effect on my photography, both professionally and creatively.
Greatly appreciated Andy as I've just bought the Canon 10-8mm prior to a week in Whitby. Having watched this I'm sure I'll get better images than if I hadn't, and I've set a reminder to watch this again on the evening that I arrive. Thanks again.
Am very excited to put to use the new information on the use of nodal slides when rotating camera to catch a panoramic shot! Thank you very much! Your very precise explanation lifted me out from my discouragement in using wide angle lens! cheers!
Thank you, this video is really insightful, and an excellent introduction to understand wide angle lens. It was very illustrative to see a beautiful image that didn't work and then the one with better use of the wide angle view.
Thank You, Andy, for the terrific presentation. I had written an email sometimes ago but you did not receive it because the attached files were too large. I will send you another one shortly. We will join you in 2022 as we are still not able to get out of Australia! Missing both you and Andrea. Odile
Thanks Andy, so good I watched it twice! I have never been a great believer in wide angle lenses because of what I thought to be its limitations, but your presentation has completely changed my mind.
excellent vid !! im hoping for a time in the near future to go see the Dolomite mountains... i love Italy 💚🤍❤️ and your images Andy!! Would be a dream to be able to go see this incredible area as part of your workshop thanks for sharing all the great info with us here in RUclips land 🙏🏼💕
Many thanks Andy for a truly inspirational tutorial which has now inspired me to go out and purchase a wide angle lens in order to improve my favourite subject of landscape photography.
Wow! Absolutely brilliant! None of these points were new to me, however.... it could be how deep did you went with the details, it could be how did you managed to interrelate each point with the next one, it could be your obvious passion... I don't even know! But it's always a real pleasure to watch/hear you. Thanks a lot for sharing such a master class.
A very informative video, with clear and descriptive explanations, supported with fine photographic examples. Feeling inspired to dust off my 14mm wide angle lens, which has only been used a couple of times in the last year. Thank you Andy.
Great Video! No bling boom crash: "Hey i am Andy...; just great pictures and information. I really appreciate the way u do it. I am just a hobbyist and learned so much from your videos. Danke!!!
I totally enjoyed and appreciated this video. Reminded me of why I sometimes have a few problems with my wide angles. Very well explained and Thank You for sharing.
This was like a masterclass on composition with a wide angle lens. Thank you.
Thanks so much Paula, glad you found it useful
The fact that you actually have quality images to back up the talking points is huge. Massively educational.
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video
Stopped it after 10mseconds and subscribed - that opening drone shot is absolutely stunning!
Thanks so much for the sun. Glad you enjoyed it

I am the same. My mantra for my 10-24 is "If it's good enough for Andy Mumford, it's good enough for me". He's been very inspiring for me.

Thanks so much, really glad the video was useful
I have watched a lot of videos on RUclips but this is on top of the pile. Very informative, Andy.
Wow Adrian, that's a lovely comment. Thanks so much
I think this was the best discussion of wide angle lenses that I've found.

This was such a well prepared and presented tutorial with so many valuable tips and accompanying examples. Thank you for creating and sharing this.
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video
This is the best explanation of the use of wide angle lenses that I have seen (among many). Well Done! Thanks.

I’m researching composition, this is awesome
Thanks so much 🙏
Andy, I've watched quite a few of your videos, and they are all top knotch, thank you so much. Thank you. This video was very informative on wide-angle lenses .
Thanks so much, really glad the video was useful
Thank you Sir
I have been researching quite a bit of late and honestly stumbled across your series of tutorials while researching filter use & exposure.
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed the video

Everything covered in rhe most lucid way .
L brackets are vital accesories to have along with filters while shooting such landscapes and I hope u would agree.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. L bracket are indeed vital..I've covered them in videos before.

"... I think I've covered just about everything..."
You certainly have!

A great video Andy! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've struggled with wides and the perspective on subjects, but your video was very helpful.
