  • This marriage almost seems like a divorce... Neither understood what's going on, a fine sailing machine with a lump of steel that doesn't know back to front... It's a, push pull relation... This chunk of iron, will propel these hulls from the back, or the front, as it flies low below deck, it dives her, stops her, pulls her and pushes her...
    Yet she, no matter what, always seems to be going forwards....

    May the force be with you. I am thinking of building a proa. I live close to Lake Ontario in Canada. I love sailing but don't have space to build or store a large boat. The proa looks perfect for my needs. Thanks for posting your videos.

      Thanks my friend, go ahead, but start small, big proas have many issues... Also understanding Shunting takes time, my first proa was 23 foot, landed me on the rocks on my second sail... Small is cheap, light weight, car stoppable, easier to build and perfect for learning. Keep Shunting man, may the Force B with U, Balkan Shipyards

      Thanks Chris, writing is fun, A very long road is coming to an end........
      The future with her aint gonna B easy. 2 of us onboard, fitting ourselves, all we have and need into 400 kg!! With little to no shelter, zero comfort, no extras, we will attempt to sail over the horizon, wet, cold and hot, will always be there for us, fear will probably pop in too every now and again....
      I Do Wonder Why??? At times.... I truly do....
      Yet, I LOVE sailing these craft! I totally do!!! Still, I do wonder....
      Maybe her Energy will open doors, in every Port she enters, maybe she sets me a new path to life, that will suit my sole better than my present one.... maybe?
      These thoughts keep me going, I never lost hope, I just still wonder.....
      Keep Shunting my Friend

    There u go! Ready for the spring! Looking forward! I've been refurbishing a small cruising catamaran before I get back to the little proa. I figure I can cruise camp first with the cat while the weather is nice, then finish the proa when the cat is on the water. See you out there!

    Looking forward to your launch.
    I bet you are too!
    I've seen a small side mounted engine with something like a transparent Tupperware box enclosing it. That would keep a lot of water off.

      Yeah bro, I am! Yet launches are always a touch stressful... All the "what if?" questions in the world pop to mind, yet it's a one way ticket, there is no turning back! I feel I should be above 80% good on this one, the rest is usually just tweaking.
      Tupperware? interesting, and brilliant! u blow a hole to get the shaft through, and throw on the cover... I will put it onto the tweaking list for now, tomorrow back to welding and other stuff... Goto get the to do list behind me.

    Love the release mechanism! Am a little worried that the carb is very close to the water. Wave hits the beam and splashes everywhere and it only takes a drop to stop it. What about "snorkle" airtake like on a 4x4 from a flexible hose?

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  6 месяцев назад

      It has a snorkle intake made by Tohatsu them selves! The square plastic cover in front of the carb, fits snug all round the carb intake, from there the air intake is deflected 180 degrees the other way facing the crank shaft... That splash will have to be very persistent to get in...
      I'm counting on my swinging engine board, to take the punch, the spray should be ok...
      It all has to be tested, if it shows potential, yet to close to the sea, an extension could be added, raising the engine 5 inches higher. Yet I feel it could work as is...
      We are sailors, if there's waves there's wind....
      Then again you could be entering port on a beautiful F1 sunny day... Pottering in on 3000 RPM, suddenly a motor boat comes out, he sees a sailing vessel coming in, he's the king of the hill! A surge of adrenaline hits him hard... 500 horses come to life, his bow flies sky high! In a second he's on a plane, moving at 20 knots, we pass port to port, by now he's doing 30, suddenly we're in an F1 with a Tsunami rushing our way aiming directly for our beam....
      So yeah....
      Happy u like the folding jazz....
      Keep Shunting Dominic, you're doing well!!!

      @BalkanShipyards haha yup that is a guarantee! Water will find a way if it wants to! My pahi is a wet boat, once it's over 15 knots gotta have foul weather gear just to be on deck. If I am going further than a day sail I take my (electric) outboard off and put it inside

  • @colrodrick8784
    @colrodrick8784 6 месяцев назад

    Cool that you’re still engineering the crap out of that wonderful shunter mate.
    Having never really used an outboard before a month ago, I had no idea of them at all (aside from surf rescue when I was younger). But now, much more excited getting those machines to work.
    And I have been sailing most of last week. Home for Easter then back into boat projects. Not as inspiring as yours but I wanted my wife with me. So a 26 ton 35ft mono is my vessel.
    Pros would have been more exciting but maybe take a few years and I had to strike while she was on side. Cheers and looking forward to seeing you launch

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  6 месяцев назад +1

      Heavy mono u got there Col. Must be a roomy cruiser, so comfy.... squeezing oneself into a Proa will be hard work now....
      Outboards are funny, they work well, yet have many downsides, inboard diesel is the real thing. But on a my Proa that's out of the question.
      It took a year of thinking to get here, seems ok, yet it still has to prove itself. Hope to launch by end of April, will be interesting...
      Good to hear you're sailing!!! Enjoy it, and keep at it! Fair winds my friend, take care and may the Force B with U

      Yeah it is a solid thing. Integral keel and skeg hung rudder. My old Dad used to say 'never go to sea on a boat with a bolt on keel'. I sailed one back from Tassie when I was still working for the Navy, but being a Navy yacht I was confident that it was prperly and routinely inspected for rust and flaws. Anyway, if I couldn't get a suitable cat, then a solid old Aussie mono was the only choice. Some of these boats have circumnavigated, so it's got a good pedigree.
      The boat itself has a marinised Kubota (aka tractor - virtually every farmer here has one - so plenty of spares and they are not ridiculously expensive) diesel which is reliable and cheap to run. I am getting at worst 2 litres per hour doing up to around 6kts under motor alone.
      W're going to be living aboard so lots of upgrades happening, solar, batteries, plumbing, composting loo, replacing refrigeration system and removing the old toilet sanitising and holding systems. Old holding tank will in future hold a secondary diesel tank bladder to lengthen our cuising capability. Ditto water - going with rainwater harvesting via hardtop which will improve liability in sun and rain (and help keep our water tanks full).
      I'm grateful for the opportunity to be on the water. And I thank you for the inspiration to keep on going Rael, mate. Keep these videos coming.@@BalkanShipyards

      Great news brother, I'm happy for you man! focus on your dreams and they come true, cos dreams come true only to dreamers...
      U chose well, now it's down to pen and paper... writing and drawing one's ideas will help simplify some and maybe even eliminate others... Simple is best! If so, cheap will usually stick to it like a magnet.
