Proas are good 4 sailing, and that's about it, ha ha...

  • A lumpy Black Sea, like a Bentley on air she takes it on... So smooth, so gentle, it's Crystal Clear, Proas are kind, strong and cheap.
A battle machine, made to take on the sea, not fight it, rather go with it, flex with it, ride with it...
Time is nothing but a reference, the sea is everything! it rules... At sea, the sea is time... It will tell you the time, it will give you your right of passage...
Proas may be forgiving, yet they are very demanding, these craft are the strongest of multies, the fastest of monos, but they will scare you!
with limited mobility, entering and exiting tight places could become very exciting...
An open water vessel, that demands you understand it, for it will never forgive you if you don't!
Shunting is serious stuff, yet it is what makes Proas so special, still, there is no room for mistakes....

Nice sailing, though I was hoping she'd be a bit faster for you.
Was Jenia below, how is it sleeping while under way?

We sleep on deck in a tent when we come in, at sea there is one bunk inside, and one hand on deck...
It's a lumpy sea here, bashing the hulls shaking the wind out of the rig. Still I've been sailing only to windward ... Off the wind I believe she will get going Dave.
I'm sorry I got alarmed by how hard it was Shunting on land, so I cut the masts down and reduced SA from 20 to 18 square meters, at sea she shunts well, so that was a mistake....
Oh well.... Yet I still haven't sailed in blow....

Beautiful, but yeah experimentation often ends in disappointment. it's just part of it. Have you ever considered a Malagasy Pirogue or Lakana? SV Delos YT channel did a brief video with a 35~ft outrigger called Mamigy. Watching your channel actually inspired me to build a small 21ft version of Mamigy. My boat has a length to beam of 6:1, is fast and carry around 1000 lbs. It doesn't shunt though, it just has a large Lateen that can be brailed.

I'm very pleased with her, she has a kind motion and in ocean sailing with a stable wind and smoother water sh will probably sail very well.
I reduced the size of the rig, that was a mistake, yet that could be sorted out...
Happy I inspired you, keep Tacking out rigger sailor

I had a long answer that youtube auto deleted for posting links to mamigy's video.
I recall that video (number 99) as showing it as a coastal cruiser/ fishing vessel. The only version of something similar that was built is the 71ft Gaias Dream (google it) which turned out not so great. I guess if overly built you might fair better, what kind of sailing will you be doing in yours?

It looks like you have been sailing to windward all day. I reckon you just need more light air canvas you can put up. On my pahi it's 31 foot and has 27.5sqm of sail. A tiki21 is 19.5 . That was before I made the drifter. After that it became a lot more satisfying to sail!

    • @BalkanShipyards

You are bang brah! Donnow how???
Yet it's very lumpy here, shacking my rig and bashing my hulls. Still testing stuff, taking it easy, I expect off the wind she will take off... That's what I designed her for truly, just too much going on now, but we gonna test her hard.
I couldn't shunt her on the dry, so I cut the masts down, it helped, but on the water Shunting is easy, now I'm sorry... I reduced SA from 20 to 18 square meters, fucked up....
Anyway great boat, so smooth, now back to the drawing board.... Time will tell...

@@BalkanShipyards hmm what about a drifter jib flying free sheeted to the bow? controversal but I know some junk riggers do carry such a sail and use it for windward in light air. I certainly would. I love sailing in light air - with enough canvas. If you can get a decent speed you can cover a lot of distance in great comfort. it won't feel so sloppy if you can go a bit faster.
Another idea I've been considering, since I stuck a yard on my drifter that was too big... is great big really light boomless lug sail. Kinda like on a sailau but no boom, so it's just one spar.
Another possibility would be the sri lanka style, with a sprit. Those look huge. Of course,, switch back to the junk once it gets to 15...

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  3 месяца назад

Taking the Junk off is a mess Dominic... Too many lines, too much stuff, it's almost impossible. Very heavy too...
Getting up a nother sail without taking down the junk will take a lot of thinking.
My head stay goes down by the yard, so it's no good, the only place would be, on deck between the hulls, now we also need a mast....
Will see bud, if you get any ideas send them over....
      Keep Shunting and tacking...

@@dominictarrsailing good thinking, but then, how do I shunt? A sprit sail aloft and a heavy junk hanging at the bottom, yet both have to move over...
      It's way too much.
To be fair, I think I'm just a touch under rigged, a Tiki 21 has 1.5 square meters more, yet much more stability, weight and drag... So I could be ok for starters...
The boat moves well for now, in strong winds I'm sure it will be fast, it's a lumpy ride with unstable winds here, if I hadn't cut off 90 cm, rather 50, I could have had 20 square meters....
That may be the best option, extend the masts and add on another batten at the bottom....
Easier said than done though 😜
There are too many complications, like weight and where to keep the spare sail....
So yeah, I messed up, but stopping isn't an option!
Thanks bro, any other ideas are very welcome.
