    I found out about the passing of Mikhail Kalashnikov shortly before making this video. It seems appropriate to honor him in this way. No matter what Country you live in or what your political affiliations are, he was a Veteran of WW2 and deserves respect. He created one of the finest military rifles ever. In his later years, he regretted that his rifle was used by evil people. He lived a long and healthy life and passed at the same age as my grandfather at 94. Thanks for watching my video today and we should all remember him as a patriot.
    Thanks,
    Eric

      +KoivuTheHab K was rightly a little humble because the AK-47 is a copy of an STG-44. That gas operated gun is it's daddy and it was invented by a German named Hugo Smeisser? I think. The STG was the first gas-op/select fire gun of it's kind. The AK-47 is what you get when you try to make one in a crappy Soviet machine shop.

    God love him... Kalashnikov was a genius, and will go down in history with the greats; Browning, Garand, Tokarev, Degtyaryov, Mosin, Lee, Maxim, Mauser... in fact his name might be more common around the world than all of these. He was, is, and shall be dearly missed. For decades and centuries to come, when his firearms will still be running, when his impact will still be felt. He's a hero of WWII, of the Soviet Union, of Russia, and to me personally. No self respecting gun owner would think otherwise, and that includes AR/M16/M4 fanboys. To not show Kalashnikov his just respects is simply showing disrespect to firearms and gun owners in general.

    • @pac6010
      @pac6010 9 лет назад

      That's laying it on a little thick don't ya think ?
      Hes a great designer and engineer no doubt but imo hes not on the mount Rushmore of gun designers. Hes not in the same class as some of those other guys you listed. The AK is on the mount Rushmore of battle rifles though so hes got that going for him...which is nice.

    • @NormanMatchem
      @NormanMatchem 9 лет назад +14

      drtrolish Firstly: Who cares about Mount Rushmore other than Americans? Secondly: The AK isn't a battle rifle; it's an assault rifle. Thirdly: AK47, AKM (most common assault rifle on planet Earth), RPK, PK, AK74, AKs-74u, Saiga, AK-100 series, AK12, and from what I understand the Romanian PSL DMR is technically a Kalashnikov design because it's essentially an enlarged AK or RPK or some such thing. That's all simply from memory.
      With that said, no, I don't think I'm laying it on a little thick.

    • @NormanMatchem
      @NormanMatchem 9 лет назад +5

      SChrisSD It's not like Mikhail Kalashnikov came out of nowhere and took credit for the AK47, then disappeared into obscurity. Ever since he was injured during WWII, he was working on firearm designs. I believe his first prototype was an SMG, which is understandable because that was pretty much the standard automatic firearm of the day, far more common than LMGs and CERTAINLY more common than this newfangled concept of assault rifles or 'sturmgewehrs'.
      The USSR wanted an assault rifle chambered for the 7.62x39 cartridge, there were quite a few designs sent in for trial testing. Obviously, Kalashnikov's won, and entered mass production in 1949 if I recall correctly. It was then improved in 1959 or so as the lighter and cheaper AKM. He also designed the RPK, the PK and PKM, AK74 (Although he reportedly wanted to stick with 7.62x39), RPK-74, AKs-74u, the Saiga, and towards the end of his life, contributed to the new AK12 which is a design that seems to be as good or better in just about every way to the M4A1. Possibly not in weight, but the difference there would be negligible, it wouldn't be in pounds.
      The AK or RPK design was also beefed up to make the Romanian PSL, apparently. I understand the SVD-63 however is a unique design, with no parts commonality with Kalashnikov's work. I'll also point out that, as far as the STG44 is concerned, the AK47 was lighter, and its 7.62x39 cartridge is hotter than 7.92x33, not to mention of course, it's far easier to produce. The newer (and most common assault rifle on Earth) AKM reduced the weight by a couple pounds. If I recall correctly, an unloaded AKM weighs as much or less than an unloaded M16A1.

He designed the gun, he can't be held fully responsible for every single way they are used, Ford isn't burning in hell because he invented the model T and now we have car accidents. By your logic every firearms designer is evil

    I don't want to start the "AK vs. AR" battle....but man those 7.62x39 rounds hit really hard. I've got both the AR and the AK and when I shoot the AK and hit the ground, dirt and mud fly up 20 feet, but when I do it with my AR it's a very small amount of debris that fly's in the air. It just seems the 7.62x39 round is a much superior round as far as initial stopping power goes. Also....I understand that looking at the ballistics of both the 5.56 and the 7.62 they seem to be identical....but man, I love the 7.62x39.

    • @kriskringus2191

      Oliver O'Keafe Do you think the 5.56 has more power or do you think they are about the same? Just curios on your opinion (or facts) on this matter.

    • @kriskringus2191
      @kriskringus2191 8 лет назад +16

      The 7.62x39 is a good round and it will certainly put and keep a man on the ground, but the 5.56 round, to me, is the more sensible round. The 7.62 round is less accurate at ranges, while the 5.56 keeps its accuracy and slows down, causing more trauma and blood loss for the person on the receiving end, notwithstanding the fact that the The 7.62 has a greater range and is stronger than the 5.56 round at more reasonable distances, say half of its near kilometer effective range. The 5.56 round is lighter and more compact, allowing you to carry more of it.

    • @jtguns88
      @jtguns88 8 лет назад +8

      Oliver O'Keafe I agree with that 100%. Especially on accuracy. I believe within 100 yards or less the 7.62 would have more initial knockdown power. The 5.56 is greater at 300-600 yards. The 7.62 is pretty much useless out to 500 or 600 yards. Just my opinion....I have no ballistic stats to back that up. One thing is for sure....both rounds are devastating within 200-300 yards no matter what.

      @galesd1971 8 лет назад +22

      @@toxixbob8375 he deserves respect. I, my self as a commie, do respect him. I agree about he was part of the Soviets, regretting his rifle to be used by them. He was the good Soviet.
