AKs were made as a more of a throw away gun, if it was more than just a simple fix toss it and comrade boris will give you a new one.
ARs are more of a if something wrong fix it yourself as long as you have the parts, and if you don't have the parts Specialist Simmons will get you what you need.
the ak has a built in cleaning kit tho lol, even in the first ever type 1 kalashnikovs the first ever aks to be produced
i love the idea of hiding the kit in the stock, and the aks couldnt have done it more perfectly

In the USSR, they hire military engineers and designers to work within facilities and tailor make guns for the express purpose of military grade manufacturing and warfare. In the US, they have private sector developers who create guns and submit them to military test trials. There is a huge difference between the methodology applied by a military institute of science, and a private arms manufacturer. When people compare the two it shows a lot of ignorance about things like history and economics. The minds of the people involved in making these couldn't have been further apart.

I know I'm way late to this, but I haven't seen anyone mention it. In relation to the AR it seems the substantially lower cyclic would help the ak and at least to a degree reduce the extra stress caused by higher gas volume and bigger bore discrepancies.

important note: most AK parts are actually built to RPK standards (since it uses the same parts except for the barrel), meaning they are meant to hold up to the volume of fire of an LMG

Yep, and that's why most of the military in developing country using AK as their main weaponry for their regular soldier. But yeah the special force got AR-15, M4 or any other good complex guns. But, AK is definately much cheaper to be maintain for a long time without serious attention.

An AK will typically last a helluva lot longer than an AR w/o any regular maintenance since the gas impingement system can dirty up the weapon quicker than a short stroke cause the excess gas has nowhere to go

***** Well you seem to know what you're talking about. I only watched a bunch of documentaries (some about the AK, some about vietnam). It seemed to me that one reason for the low precision (in a test that I watched) was that the barrel slightly bent upwards while shooting.
I would think that bullet characteristics against various materials (kevlar, etc.) would greatly depend on the bullet construction.
