Don’t try to say mike Tyson at 37 years old(when he fought Lewis) was in his prime. He was old, soft and only fighting for money. Prime mike Tyson was 86-95, but ultimately his drug abuse, alcohol, hookers etc took over his boxing and he dipped, but a more narrow and disciplined person like Lewis was able to stretch his prime until his late 30s.

I agree...but a win is a win....I think lewis ...Holyfield always relied on skill and Discipline where Tyson lost those after he lost Cus...relied on power and strength which wont get you far in Professional Boxing.
@@BazIrvine Nothing to do with age, but motivation & self discipline. Tyson's only opponent in life, & especially in boxing, has only ever been himself. He was lost as a child, & lost for most of his adulthood. When Cus was alive, Mike briefly felt that he was worth something, & felt the approval from Cus that was worth fighting & winning for. The Jesuits have had a saying for hundreds of years. 'Show me a boy of 7, & I will show you the man.' Self worth is instilled early in life, & people have spent entire lifetimes trying to rise from the ashes of their childhood years.
@Cryer24597 Coulda, woulda, shoulda. We can all speculate about what COULD have happened, - but none of us, not even the boxing professionals, know what WOULD have happened. You could just as easily speculate, - who did Ali ever meet who was remotely the equal of a prime 19 - 21 year old Tyson? Frazier came closest in size, work rate & style, & Frazier believed rightly or wrongly that he won all 3 fights, & floored Ali in one. & Frazier was completely blind in one eye in all 3 fights. In style, speed, knockout punch in both hands, Tyson could have won easily. But that doesn't mean that he WOULD have won, because Ali had far more heart, & didn't become frustrated & disheartened when he couldn't knock his opponent out. Same with Lewis & Holyfield. Tyson absolutely had the power, speed, & defense to have destroyed both in his prime skill years. That still doesn't mean that he WOULD have. Lewis, Holyfield & Ali, all had a measured, calm skilled style that gets better with age & wisdom. Tyson, on the other hand, because he was only 5'11" at best & 15 & a half stone, had to rely on Frazier's style of speed, defense, body movement, & multi punch complex combinations, with a very aggressive high work rate. This only suits youth & hyper fitness, along with highly disciplined training. Lose any one of those aspects, & Tyson becomes vulnerable to 6'5"" big hitters & shrewd defenders. As we saw in the Douglas fight, looking for single shots instead of combinations, & a very low work rate, simply didn't work for an undisciplined, complacent, lazy Tyson, & he paid the price against a man he should have beaten inside the first round. But Douglas, as Mike acknowledged, trained specifically & fought the best fight of his entire career. For Douglas, they met at precisely the right time in their careers. Douglas in the ascendant of his career, Tyson spiralling downwards out of control. & that is my point here. Early on, Lewis lost against Tyson when they were both young, but Tyson lost to Lewis & Holyfield later in his career, when he had lost skill, speed, & combinations, & they had gained in experience & defense. Everyone has a moment in time when they are the best they are ever going to be. Tyson's came early, Lewis, & Holyfield's came late career.
@Cryer24597 If you watch back all Tyson's victories, you notice that not one of his knockout victories was a straight arms length punch. Every single one was either a right or left hook, or an upper cut. He was the little guy against every single one of his opponents, which meant that they all had a considerable reach advantage over him. This means that straight punching at distance made him extremely vulnerable to long ranged big hitters! He HAD to get inside & up close where his opponents reach held no advantage. That requires a very elusive quick moving defense, an extremely forward aggressive high work rate, & multiple punch combinations to work the body to bring the hands down to leave the head open. A low work rate & just waiting for an opening for a single punch to the head would only work for a very tall long reach big straight hitter like Wilder, or Lewis. For a little guy like Tyson or Frazier, it would be catastrophic. & it was, as we saw before the Douglas fight even happened. Tyson was becoming lazy & complacent 3 fights before the Douglas farce.
How could Tyson be in his prime after all the drugs, prison, debt, personal problems, long periods of inactivity, no stable coaching, and no family to support emotionally? Tyson fought most his fights to pay off his debts. Truly, Tyson was done even before he lost to J.B. Douglas
JeanAlesiagain3 he wasn’t done but slowly declined from there . His fights with Razor Ruddock before he went to jail showed he was still the deadliest heavyweight .
I never really liked Lewis until I saw this, Lennox is a wise man. Young men need to listen to older men. That's what is missing, you can't buy it, you can't sell it.... it's natural, and the young people need it now more than ever!
He didn't fight Mike in his prime but let me tell you Mike did a solid job against him. Lennox used great strategy to beat Mike. When Mike would hit him hard he would lean on Mike with his size and weight then wrap him up. Mike fought a good fight. Lennox is great at strategy. It definitely would be different with a younger Tyson because his defense and movement was way sharper in the 80s to early 90s.

There’s a lot of talk about whether Tyson was in his prime against Lewis. As he said, during the time they first met, Tyson came at him and he couldn’t hang. Eventually he learned to hit back. This is how Lennox was during his pro career, often weathering a storm early on, taking the sting out of his opponent and then boxing him to victory. Regarding the matchup, in his own words, he was a late learner and Mike had it all from the start, and therefore them meeting that late on means he probably would have had the edge 9 times out of 10. Lennox believes Mike was ready for a fight on that day, and who are we to disagree. Lewis was an exceptional fighting brain, and had to take longer to learn his style. Mike’s aggression coupled with the explosive power and speed of youth, crucial in implementing such a style would have seen him zap Lennox 9 times out of 10 (being generous to the latter) in the late 80s. The improbability of a classic matchup between them was even more so given all the other fighters around in those 10 - 15 years. Ultimately Lennox would have to have been older when he met a younger Mike. Incidentally, if you watch footage of Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Smokin Joe and Ali in their ‘primes’ then Tyson’s Aura slips a bit. Those were very very hard men, brave and every bit as dominant. I saw many flaws in Tyson’s style, even though he was my fave. His punching speed and power in both hands was a wonder to behold, and almost never got to finish my pizza before he’d won a fight. And I could eat back then!
Tyson and Rooney were an awesome team. I, too, believe that if Cus D'Amato had been younger, and just could have remained in Tyson's camp throughout his career, he would have remained unstoppable. Failing that, if he had remained with Kevin Rooney, he would very likely have been much better off also. It was psychologically that Mike Tyson was affected, and his physical ability in the ring suffered thereby, as his career rolled on.
The problem i have with that theory is that Tyson was never faced with any ELITE opposition while under the tutilidge of Kevin Rooney, He fought and beat some good fighters with Rooney in his corner but no Elites, and to be fair to Tyson there where no elite fighters around at the time, I know he beat Larry Holmes but i believe Holmes was around 40 years old when he fought tyson and he had been out the ring retired for two years until he was bribed into making a comeback by Don King. How would Tyson (with rooney in his corner) of handled an elite skilled and unimtimidated fighter like Holyfeild giving him undoubtedly the toughest fight of his career, how do we know he wouldn't of crumbled like he did in 96? When they did meet, holyfeild was several years past his best, it wasn't just tyson who was past his best but also holyfeild. we'll never know just how good prime 1980's kevin rooney tyson really was.
@@BiggieBigLnPac True. There is no way of ever being sure.
Douglas
Whoa man! He had a great comeback after the Buster Douglas fight after the rape allegations and all.
after his adoptive father died, it all went downhill relatively fast....
sabin97 exactly
JeanAlesiagain3 he wasn’t done but slowly declined from there . His fights with Razor Ruddock before he went to jail showed he was still the deadliest heavyweight .

I never really liked Lewis until I saw this, Lennox is a wise man. Young men need to listen to older men. That's what is missing, you can't buy it, you can't sell it.... it's natural, and the young people need it now more than ever!
No Lennox.... you DID NOT fight him in his prime..... just.... don't even try to say that.
Facts. I know it might help Lennox sleep at night, but Mike was a shell of his former self. A prime Tyson would've DESTROYED Lewis.
Exactly
He didn't fight Mike in his prime but let me tell you Mike did a solid job against him. Lennox used great strategy to beat Mike. When Mike would hit him hard he would lean on Mike with his size and weight then wrap him up. Mike fought a good fight. Lennox is great at strategy. It definitely would be different with a younger Tyson because his defense and movement was way sharper in the 80s to early 90s.
@@CenkHoca Lennox Lewis himself said that Tyson was a early bloomer and he himself was better later on. He also said that he was older than Tyson when he became a professional. So they are 2 fighters that peaked at 2 different ages. It is possible to be a prime fighter pass prime age and thats what Lennox was. Lennox was better in his later years. George Foreman was another fighter who was noted to be better in his later years.
Lennox is a real one. So much respect for him.
Neither were in ther prime when they fought, but Tyson was absolutely done when he fought Lennox.
I think tyson was done after his time in prison. He was a good boxer after that, but he was not the actual mike, he was somebody else. Take an athlete out of training for a year and his career comes to an end, he spent 3 years in prison, i don't think anybody can fully recover from that, not even mike. That animal died in prison, it was just the flesh that came out after 3 years
Imagine living with that feeling of defeat every day for 3 years.
Yup
@@shaktisehrawat7479 He lost to Buster, 50:1 odds
@@RealDarkFilm yea, bad day in office, what else can be said. He never got a rematch too, buster was so waste of a boxer that he didn't survive few more years.
Tyson wasnt in his prime when he fought lewis and holyfield sorry
We know dude
Lewis and Holyfield werent in their primes either, but Tyson also lost to Douglas when he was like 21 or 22, stop the excuses
marek falk Tyson still has his boxing ability when fighting Lewis tbh he looked more bigger in fat when he was younger he was jacked asf I feel he was faster
marek falk his wife also fucked with his mind… he was obviously distracted
AeroClasher if you think Tyson was faster when he fough Lewis than when he was in his 20’s... I don’t know what to tell you.
What a great interview. Class act for sure. So calm and level headed
What an articulate and gentleman Lennox is
My Respect for Lennox.
Greetings from Durango Mexico 🇲🇽
*Mike Tyson is the greatest boxer of all-time.*
no
No. He probably could of been, but a b*tch screwed all that up for him.
No he isn't. If he fought back in the 70's he would be lucky to break into the top 10.
Colby Kelly... in his prime: 2nd behind Ali. 1986-1989 Mike: Amazing

Imagine getting into a podcast just to talk bout your opponent
I will left there is no way i am going to talk about a opponent i kick his ass
I know. So disrespectful
Lennox is a true legend of the ring. Incredible boxer.
What were the flaws in prime Mike?
Yeah I can't find them
I was never much of a boxing fan, but man I loved watching Lewis back in the day. Big and fast as hell
Always seemed that those two individuals, in particular, had seemed to have something of an inspirational and stabilising effect on Mike Tyson, but one never truly knows how he would have gone under more extreme tests had they been around still.
A good point.
Lennox couldn't find anyone that wanted to fight him for so many years, because they all realised how good he was.
The picture of a young Lennox and Mike just goes to show they were both destined for greatness. They could both have had that picture taken with so many other fighters who have long fell by the wayside or simply didn’t make the grade.
Wow! Russell peters is such a boxing encyclopedia. Amazing. Great to hear from a legend like Lennox
Even if it was 1983, Tyson was 17 so Lennox is correct about the age he sparred him. Russell might be wrong on that one.
Not to mention Tyson had not lost when Lennox debut. Tyson lost Feb of 1990. So take that "encyclopedia" toss it in the trash and upgrade to a computer with google. Sighhhhhhh
He made some mistakes tho, like saying that Lennox turned pro after Mike first lost in Jan 1989 when really Mike's first loss was in Feb 1990
@@j2alomar He made a mistake fair enough but he still knows his stuff, just not the exact dates or whatever lol
I have a lot of respect for Lennox for the simple fact that he was never a brash, loudmouth ego maniac. He was always respectful and humble and let his work in the ring speak for itself. Holyfield was very similar in that sense. It seems that era of boxing is so far gone now. Majority of the boxers present day seem like they emulate rappers a bit too much. All show and bafoonery 1st and hard work and skills take a backseat.
100%.
I’m so happy legends like this still exist.
The way Mike and Lennox talk nowadays their the kind of guys to stop a fight before being involved in one.
Russell Peter's was literally incorrect in all of his facts in this video and for some reason he kept trying to interject himself and act as if he was there.
Free Speech hypocritical to needlessly include his race when you’re calling him a racist. also a bit counter intuitive.
I watched this to test if the whole episode was worth watching and if he's piping up all the way thru then I don't think I'll bother

@Free Speech I like that fact that there are so many India haters. Keep it coming
I knew Lennox was a bad man when Bowe three the belts in the trash and retired. What a great time in boxing. We had Mike, Evander, Bowe, Bruno, Big George Foreman come out of retirement, Tommy the Duke Morrison and more. Now the heavyweight division is getting back to it again and I love it. Congratulations to Andy Ruiz Jr. That was an eye opener for me.
Lewis is very wise and level headed, loved how this section ended, always taking the opportunity to talk to kids - great stories about Mike, you can see how Mike has aged and learnt from all his life lessons, but basically Mike was a very humble person, and very smart
yes. perfect ending. LL is class act
Just so interesting! It's my day off and I have things to do, but I couldn't pull myself away from listening to this! So much respect for this man! Not only a boxing champion but so intelligent. I wish he could reach all these kids that are just floating through life with no guidance. Every young man needs to be taught how to be a real man by the greats that came before them. I didn't have that. My dad was there, but he just never gave me any advice or guidance. I feel like I turned out well. My wife says I did.
