  • The blight of MLM's have reached into many communities destroying families and personal finance. For the last two episodes I talked about the Sister Wives Closet as an MLM. This week I want to explore the world of Network marketing and how it effects the Browns and people like them within their community.
    Let's have the conversation.

Hey James, can you talk about Meri claiming to be a life coach? It’s just crazy how so many unqualified people claim to be life coaches. When Meri was doing her Instagram live, and somebone asked her what “ worthy up”means her slogan she couldn’t even give a good answer. She doesn’t even know.!

Did she say she was going to be a life coach? Curious.
I always thought she was using all that to lift herself up and for others, too.
I did all that during a bad time and turned it around.
But I wouldn’t have called myself a “life coach.”

Years ago I worked as a stripper. This guy would come around and give a spiel about this 'Money Game' and his line was always 'You know So & So who works here on the weekends? She's made A LOT of $$$ playing. You can too!' I laughed so hard at this fool. He was thinking just because we were dancing we must be idiots and had the cash to get involved in this foolishness. I might have been making a living shaking what my Mama gave me, But my Mama didn't raise no fools!

I used to be in the same line of work. I went back to school & now I'm a hospice nurse. Only in America! Lol! It's crazy how many dudes thought they could play me back then. Like we were born yesterday because we're dancers 😂 The only good that came from that time in my life is the ability to detect liars, users & con artists

So weird they thought they could recruit you. MLMs usually target people who are struggling financially. My understanding is dancers make great money.

This is just to say I don't know whether I'm more impressed that you put up with him pitching up regularly to try and indoctrinate you (and I'm guessing you kept your cool) or the physical endurance it takes to dance for hours on end (with or without a pole). And I promise I'm not being sarcastic here - I'm more body insecure than I'd like to admit and couldn't even imagine doing exotic dancing alone in a pitch black room. So, all that to say I genuinely envy (and admire) your confidence! And I'm also genuinely sorry if this comes across poorly and offends you in any way - it's not my intention!

Money can’t buy happiness, but it does buy comfort and can buy security.
If you are secure and comfortable, with a decent place to live, an adequate emergency fund, medical insurance, and a functional vehicle, it’s a lot easier to go out and pursue happiness.

I would bet Janelle and Christine and Mykelti are using ozempic, which hey do your thing, no shame in that, but to claim its the product alone they sell that helped them lose so much weight isn't fair to their downline or ppl they sell to. Like you said James it's most likely not the product alone helping aide so very much weight loss.

That’s so true James. I fell for the Keto fat burning products. The ad claimed that you could mix it in a little bit of water and drink it once a day and it would break down your body fat with no exercise or diet restrictions. I got bottles of capsules with dry stuff in them and it said to take it three times a day. It was basically a supplement not a fat burning product. They ripped me off big time. It should be faults advertising. The ad showed Shark Tank and Dr. Oz. Now I see apple cider gummies with Oprah. It’s all bull.

I'm fortunate enough never to have been in the position of being in desperate need of money because, even at the age of 33, I know I can ask my parents for help (they have more money than God but do expect us to be functional adults). And I own that privilege and try to pay their kindness forward - I like to think it's why I chose a career in the NGO space working in financial inclusion for the very vulnerable in many African countries. But I can sympathise with people that don't have those fall-backs and their friends/family have the gall to abuse their trust and rope them into MLMs. It's beyond disgusting and there's a special place in whatever version of hell that their faith believes in.

I love the analyses you do and these conversations are so important to have, and I'll always watch and enjoy this content, but I don't think I can watch the actual Sister Wives show itself anymore. I find that I can't respect or like any of the wives/Kody anymore (not that that was ever a thing with Kody and Robin), because these are reasonably-educated people that have to be aware they're abusing the trust they've earned as public figures from (mostly) women desperate to provide for themeselves/families. Even Janelle and Christine (and the adult kids involved). I know they're not bad people and have had a raw deal in their marriages to Kody, but there's no way they believe in what they're shilling to innocent people. But that's just my (very sheltered) opinion and zero judgement aimed at anyone who still enjoys the show and like them. I know we're all far from perfect and my attitude is very black-and-white and basically zero grey area.
