I just bought an Afrkatwin adventure from 2018 (my 14 th bike bit this one is a keeper for ever). Love the seatheight for my long legs, the sound (it's unbelievable!!!) and the looks (white.red.blue). It's my dreammachine. LOVE IT
I agree, there is more to adventure than single track. I hit quite a few dirt roads in my area, even before I had the AT. But the AT makes them fun. You can ride dirt roads and service roads with confidence. As soon as it gets crazy, as you say, the AT is probably capable, but not sure my skills and experience are to keep it going over boulders and such. I think of it like an all-mountain snowboard.
I’ve been enjoying my 2018 ATAS DCT for 14k + miles. I still think it’s a fantastic touring / all around bike. Your comments about weight are right on, and it’s more capable than I am for sure. This is the sport utility version of 2 wheeled travel.
I would also say that this twin is the perfect all-around bike for my likes. But I do not have it. I really feel that if one wants an adventure bike, to be able to cruise, be able to under take gravel, and dirt roads, For me, and at my age of 62 my main concern with a bike that does street and dirt is the weight believe it or not. Oh I've had big heavy bikes when a tad younger but nowadays to go out looking to travel and be out in the boonies with absolutely no one around but wildlife. I'd say that being able to comfortably lift your bike when taking a fall is massively important! For the obvious reasons of course. And you are sooo right when you address the fact of, sure the bike can handle a ton of things, but can you? So it is extremely important to not follow others in their tastes in bikes, you could end up not being very compatible with the machine because of lack of experience. I have travelled a ton on motorcycles and the need for adventure will always be there. But instead of big heavy bikes that have all these incredible features on them like yours and the BMW GS line and other wonderful bikes, I now use smaller, lighter but very capable liquid cooled bikes. And with incredible gas mileage of around 500-600 mpg!! They are simple, but durable. And fast enough to out run a bear Lol!! Important thing is to get out there, plan trips and enjoy, just ride. Feel all the wonderful things one feels when on the perfect bike of their needs. I'm no speed demon either. I like to enjoy traveling on a motorcycle in more relaxed way. Nice information in your video, thanks for sharing. Enjoy the twin all that you can, and safe riding sir👍
@@jimjim2334 Hey there, I know it's difficult to believe but it's true! The Zontes G1 125 Scrambler has a 20 liter gas tank and it gets 925 kilometers after break in period! If ya get a moment look it up and investigate all you can on that scrambler motorcycle cycle it's amazing what the darn thing comes with for 3490 euros!! Safe riding!
Nice review on the Twin. I'm waiting for the 2023 models to come out before I get one. If I'm not mistaken, Honda has given the suspension a little bit more travel than the 2022 models. Most of my riding will be just like you said. Mostly the road. But when I do find some trails, at least I'll have the right bike for it. I just don't like the idea of a dct. I'll go with the manual. Just what I'm used to and I think it will be better for me in the dirt and single tracks
Have you dirt biked alot Charlie? Not being rude, but myself and buds have plenty. Two of my buds are Baja racers. This bike does not naturally fit towards tight single track riding, in case you're not aware. Good to great two track, awesome fire/forestry road bike. And comfortable/compliant bike on asphalt. We all run DCT as we have other bikes for single track. We multi-week camp/travel on forestry, offroad and highways, so DCT is the bomb! Superior in fact I believe once you learn it, and understand it. So many benefits! I'm a standard guy in past and with vehicles (have a Z06 and Boss), but we all love DCT now, and would buy this option again. Just food for thought, FYI. I especially like the electronic suspension as it conforms to the different terrains you ride extremely well by flick of a switch, and not manually. Awesome for packing gear or a pillion also. Wish you the best on finding the bike you like, and enjoying like we do with every swing of the leg over. Cheers Charlie, from Canada 🇨🇦
@@billmcmeekin7909 , Hey, I'm curious about the AT adventure. My riding will be like most, primarily on the pavement. If you are really only doing asphalt, there probably are better bikes for cruising. But if you are tasting dirt and moving in that direction the ATASes is the bomb! :-)
Hey man, nice video:-) I have the 2020 model with the original Honda panniers and top box. When I am going 60km/h my bike have a tendency to start woppeling quite aggressive and it gets much worse when I have luggage in the top box!! Have you got similar issue/experience?? I can see you also have the original top box. Best regards!!
Hey Casper, do you have es suspension? What kind of tires do you run? Is it squirmy on both asphalt and gravel? If only gravel, get something like Mitas E07'S tires. Changes the bike immensely offroad, and other than a bit noisier performs well on tarmac. I have a 2020 ATASes with 21000 km from new and this bike is planted. I'm curious about yours.

United motorsports in Richmond KY had 2 about a month ago maybe. I think one was a 2021 black automatic transmission adventure sport, and 1 was a 2022 red white and blue automatic adventure sport. They also had a used ktm1290. Not for sure on models, i was looking at 4 wheelers
I love my 22 adventure sport dct too. The only downside for me so far is the seat, close to an hr or more of riding my butt hurts so much it’s not even funny. Looking forward to replace it for some custom aftermarket one, heard some goods about Sargent brand for the atas, other than that great bike.
LF, my 2020 was the same. Not sure if my ass or the seat broke in, but at 21000km I'm comfortable and can ride all day now. My buds boy has a KTM1290, and upgraded to a "Seats concept" saddle. Good luck, happy trails, from Canada 🇨🇦
Put some Mitas E07 tires on it. Still great traction on asphalt (tires wear a bit quicker), but a completely more stable bike offroad. Doesn't slide/plane across gravel roads anymore. This bike definitely benefits accomplished dirt riders easier. The weight is there, but dirt guys feel the bike out a bit quicker I believe. I wouldn't buy this for a first bike, to learn on especially DCT. I have and love DCT on mine. But I believe the learning with a clutch, is an easier emergency switch/learning curve way to get into biking. Looks like you're hooked now hey :-) Happy adventures ehhh, from Canada :-)
I feel bad undone. I ran the Mitas E07 plus on my bike. I believe front tire is a bit better if I remember. A friend uses tractinators on his Yamaha Teneree. :-)
You got it. Those bikes are very capable for stunts like the stupid marketing but a 250 is simply way better. Africa Twin is long trip oriented just like the big Beemer and can handle dirt.
I have one and after 4,000 miles around Scandinavia I have to say nearly but not quite. The seat is horrendous, unless you have a fat arse the seat is useless, I couldn't ride for more than an hour before arse ache happened. Scrap the standard seat and get a padded aftermarket seat, then it's almost perfect but still not quite.
The seat is terrible, no doubt. I put a lambs wool cover on mine and it's got a plush feeling now. I mostly ride dirt tracks and fire roads on it and have hit some pretty deep sand too. It's always been capable and never let me down. I love it. It's great when it's upright but heavy when it's down. I've done some single track but it's not a dedicated dirt bike that's for sure. Great for long range camping but I always wish I had my enduro bike strapped to the back when I get to where I'm going. I would recommend one for someone who want's to do long distance, see the sights and be able to hit some gnarly roads to get there.
It looks like the bike is comfortable and effortless at 60 mph. Is this a bike you can put several hundreds of miles per day up and down the highways in comfort? Would you need some accessories to make it much more comfortable? or, recommend other ADV bikes for the task?
I have a 2021 ATAS. I love it! Rode Idaho BDR on it, performed great! Doing the WABDR this year. Excellent for street trips as well.
