these highlights show that the Pistons weren't just about playing thug basketball. The Pistons matched the Bulls shot for in this game, with isiah, joe d, vinnie johnson, mark aguire and laimbeer stepping up and hitting crucial buckets time after tine in order to put Jordan and the bulls away. Tge bad boys were a better team.

As hard as it might be to believe with how dominant they were in the 1990s, this 1989 season was the first time in Bulls franchise history that they had ever won 2 playoff series in the same season. This was unchartered territory for this franchise at the time.

One of the dumbest comments ever .
Joe Dumars does not win the 1989 NBA Finals MVP if Isiah Thomas doesn't take over the 1989 ECF after Detroit was down 0-1 and 2-1 in that series when he got in Jordan's ass.
Detroit doesn't reach the 1988 NBA Finals if Isiah Thomas is not the best player in that series against Larry Bird and Boston.
Detroit doesn't beat Portland in the 1990 NBA Finals if Isiah Thomas in Game 1 doesn't destroy Terry Porter's confidence to rally Detroit in the final 7 minutes.
Ask Doc Rivers in the 1987 playoffs or LA in 1988 what Isiah Thomas could do to your team in just one quarter.
Oh, ask Hubie Brown and Bernard King what Isiah Thomas could do in just 94 seconds.
No disrespect to Joe Dumars, but we saw what Detroit looked like in 1991 when Dumars was handed the team after Isiah injured his wrist.
      No comparison.

Highlights don't tell the whole story and many new fans think cause they see the highlights that Jordan is the goat yeah he won six titles but people really think the pistons just beat up on the bulls . Just remember you got to watch the whole game because the pistons had a very balanced offense which many teams had trouble with. Zeke Joe dumars mark microwave all could shoot or take you off the dribble they had James Edwards who could post you up hit the fall away jumper laimbeer could hit the mid range and shoot the 3. Hell they was basically the warriors but a well balanced and physical style of the warriors of today. Matter of fact that whole damn central division had many 3pt shooters Dale Ellis with the bucks Craig Hodges was with the bucks before joining the bulls randy Whitman Michael Williams Reggie Miller rifle man chuck person detlef schrempf Ron Harper Craig ehlo mark price Steve Kerr when he was with the Cavs . Highlights don't cut it. Showing Jordan scoring in a series clinching loss is absurd . What should have been showed is how the bulls couldn't stop the pistons offense . The narrative that the pistons played dirty well the Knicks never complained the Celtics didn't the Lakers didn't them Atlanta hawk teams didn't the Portland trailblazers didn't and they lost to the pistons in the finals. The real narrative in the league during that time was the pistons was the team to beat and could a scoring champion get his teammates involved and lead them to a title. And before that it was who could knock off magic and the Lakers or bird Celtics. We all knew at that time no matter how good Jordan was after the 88 finals we knew that piston team was coming for the throne

It’s too hard to play defense these days, you cannot touch an offensive player it’s really ridiculous for anyone trying to play defense. Scottie: 1989 - Quits 1 min into an elimination game. 1990 - Game 7 migraine excuse. 1994 - Refuses to take the court when the play isn't called for him, forgetting he bricked off the side of the backboard the prior play.

In the NBA today offensive players with the ball look much more physical, but they are mostly just lowering the shoulder to charge past people. In the NBA today offense always gets the foul call - they want higher scores because fans like that. But there isn't really anybody fighting back, so it's not really "physical."
There were three big differences in the 90s -
One was that if on defense you had your feet planted and the offense charged into you, you'd get offensive fouls called much more often. So there were _wars_ off the ball with lots of physical play where the offense and defense under the basket fought for the position to have your feet planted between the ball handler and the basket, and a lot of the game was going back and forth between the guards and the bigs to reorient the threat and force the defense to reposition - and also to force double-team rotations. So, much more physical play - just not by the guy with the ball.
Another was you were allowed, on defense, to just stand under the basket for as long as you wanted. This gave the defense a much better ability to block driving lanes and gave bigs a better opportunity to come out on help defense without having to commit. But on offense you couldn't stand in the key for longer than 3 seconds. So the offensive big would fight from the block to get into the lane, but had to keep going in and out, the defense could just stay there, the offense couldn't. Now the 3 second rule applies on both offense and defense so nobody is allowed to stand under the basket anyway. This also is to favor higher scores and to make defense impossible because the fans like when people score a lot and they think the players who score the most are super impressive and talented even if it's because the rules favor them a lot.
The third is that offensive players were allowed to back down defensive players - to dribble backwards and bump away defensive players with their butts. You're not really allowed to do that anymore - it slowed the game down so now there's a 5-second rule where if you back down a player for too long the other team gets the ball - really it's a 3-second rule of course because if you get anywhere close to the paint the defender can't stand in the paint anyway for longer than that.
Add that they've given offensive players the freedom to basically punch and hold the defensive player with their off-hand with impunity, but the defensive player gets called for a foul even if their arm doesn't move - defenders now play with their arms behind their backs because if the guy with the ball punches them in the arm the guy with the ball gets foul shots.
It's all really stupid - and at this point the advantage of spacing is so much more obvious than it used to be that you could probably roll back a bunch of these rules and it wouldn't revert the style of play. The rules were created to _force_ teams to give the ball to guards with impressive handles who would get on highlight reels - they didn't take into account high screens or the dominance of the 3.
I think if you put back the defensive 3-second rule it wouldn't matter that much to the balance of the game because a 2 point shot is still a 2 point shot and a 3 is worth more. But it would definitely hurt the points totals of guards that the league depends on framing as stars to drum up hype, so they probably wouldn't do it.
But yeah, game now looks more physical if you only look at the guy with the ball, because the guy with the ball can do whatever he wants. But game back then was much more physical for everybody else on the floor, which is not where people are usually looking so you don't realize it unless you actually play basketball.
