Chicago Bulls - Detroit Pistons | 1991 Playoffs | ECF Game 4: Bad Boys are History

  • They ended years of frustration. They ended the Detroit Pistons' two-year reign as champions. And now, the Chicago Bulls can begin thinking about playing in the NBA finals for the first time.
    Making it look easy, the Bulls completed a four-game sweep of the Pistons with a 115-94 victory today at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Chicago dominated the Eastern Conference finals from start to finish, brushing aside the proud Pistons as if they were a nuisance instead of the defending champions.
    "To say that this is unexpected, to sweep this team, is an understatement," said Phil Jackson, Chicago's coach. "But after losing to this team for three years, I think we deserve a shot."
    The Pistons tried physical play, lineup changes and anything else they could think of to avoid being dethroned at home. None of it worked. The Bulls were too determined, too poised and too good to be denied. And now, Michael Jordan (29 points on 11-for-17 shooting along with nine rebounds, nine assists) and the Bulls have an impressive 11-1 record in the playoffs.
    "We didn't want it any other way," said Jordan, who added more luster to his extraordinary seven-year career by reaching the NBA finals for the first time. "We wanted to beat Detroit. That way, there wouldn't be any tarnish to what we accomplished.
    We surprised a lot of people, and we surprised ourselves. We didn't feel we could sweep this team, but we knew we could beat them. We had to accept every beating, every push and every elbow they gave us and stay focused on our goal. I was glad to see our team stay so focused."
    Play took on a violent nature at times, and one play during the second quarter was particularly ugly. After driving to the basket, Scottie Pippen (23 points, six rebounds, 10 assists) was confronted in midair by Bill Laimbeer and Dennis Rodman. Laimbeer shoved Pippen in the chest, then Rodman added to Pippen's pain by pushing Pippen out of bounds into the first row of seats.
    Chicago turned the game into a rout in the third quarter, building a 57-50 halftime lead into an 87-70 lead after three quarters. The closer the Bulls got to victory, the more determined they became. Their swarming defense frustrated the Pistons. And their offense worked efficiently as they passed smartly, made open shots and gave the ball to Jordan whenever they were in doubt.
    With 4 minutes 38 seconds left and trailing by 103-80, the Pistons conceded. Daly removed Isiah Thomas (16 points) and Joe Dumars from the game as the Pistons hugged each other on the bench, knowing their dream of winning three consecutive titles had died.
    "At this point, I think Chicago's a better club than we are," Daly said. "Any club that can handle us four straight deserves to go to the finals."
    These teams have met in the playoffs for four consecutive years, and there is much hostility between them. As Jackson said: "This is a team that humiliated, mocked us and beat us physically. But they were one of the toughest champions this league has seen in awhile. I think all the injuries they suffered this year took away their will to defend the title at the same level."
    When it was over, the jubilant Bulls ran into their locker room, yelling and screaming. A series with either the Lakers or the Trail Blazers awaited them. But tonight, it was time to celebrate.

    MJ had zero weaknesses on offense. Was elite at every level: off ball, on ball, close, mid range and threes (though he didn't shoot a lot because he was more efficient mid and close)

    • @ImRacistTowardsBlacks
      @ImRacistTowardsBlacks 2 года назад +1

      Mgay couldn't shoot threes very well. He shot below 20% his first four years. And if you exclude the years where the nba moved the line closer he shot below 30%. He was also a shitty passer. He mostly passes the ball to wide open shooters late in the shot clock. He struggled setting up teammates. Even Tex Winter mentioned that only Scottie could run the offense properly

    • @5stardetailingllc471
      @5stardetailingllc471 Год назад +3

      Michael Jordan’s 50% shooting for his Bull’s career when looked at through shots tracked starting the 95-96 season….which at the time was his 10th full year…show a much different narrative than he was good.
      It shows he was and remains the most lethal scorer as a shooter the league has EVER known, including the 3point pretenders shooting the ball today, because MJ did it all against the best defenders in the history of the league. Curry doesn’t have that night in and night out.
      Jordan attempted 1,850 FG and made 916, 111 of them being 3 pointers. That means he made 805 shots from 2 point range.
      At first glance you probably are yawning.
      Ok, in 96-97 his FGA was 1,892 and he made 920, again 111 were 3 point makes. So the very next year he made 809 from 2 point range. Against very good defenders.
      He didn’t take days off. Hardly ever.
      Here’s the most astounding thing. The man closest to MJ in FG’s Made and Attempted that year was Glenn Robinson’s totals with FGA at 1,410 and 627 made, 90 of them 3 pointers….so 537 2-pointers.
      Think about that for a minute. Big Dog’s makes weren’t even close to MJ’s, but damn near EPIC when you think about it.
      We’ve never seen a shooter like Michael Jeffery Jordan.

    Thomas is a great example of how being super talented and ruthless is not enough to be considered truly great. He did not know how to take a loss, and his long term behaviour and being a ringleader of questionable tactics (Jordan rules) over a period of years resulted in him missing the dream team. Jordan was ultra competitive but still managed a lot of class. Some may not like him as an individual but as a sports man he had so much more class (and talent) than Thomas. Great credit to that Bulls team that they just got better and better after their first two losses to the Pistons and went on to dominate and create a dynasty with a team that never had that label before then.

    • @twhite3850
      @twhite3850 4 года назад +1

      Isiah made some mistakes, but he was not classless. He takes too much heat. People selectively forgive faults. Barkley was forgiven for spitting on a baby. Lebron, although hated for other reasons, also walked off the court early. Jordan show low class by insulting the City of Detroit, before they swept them. Wrong or right, Isiah felt that he was standing up for the city, which has taken a lot of unfair criticism. The Jordan Rules were about forcing Jordan to one side of the court, where there were more defenders. They also tried to force him to use his left, which he hated. The Knicks treated Jordan worse than the Pistons. To say Jordan had so much more class than Isiah is a bit much. Even if Isiah doesn't walk off early, I bet Jordan would have found another reason to keep him off the Dream Team.

      They used to send the starters/stars off to the locker room when the final game was out of reach, because the fans always rushed the floor after the game. They did it for their safety. Kevin McHale stopped to congratulate Isaiah on his way out and tell them to go out and beat L.A. Sadly, the Pistons did not do that for the Bulls, but actually led a chant for the Lakers with the Pistons crowd.

    • @TheVCRTimeMachine
      @TheVCRTimeMachine 8 лет назад +2

      Jonathan Hill Yes, it does make sense. If you watch the end of the 1984 Finals in Boston, the fans storm the court and Kareem had to throw elbows and push his way through the crowd to get off the floor. Sending the starters off was common practice thereafter.
      In the case of the Celtics and the Pistons, the Celtics bench at the Silverdome was all the way across the far end of the court from the tunnel to the locker rooms. So they would have potentially had to wade through the sea of fans all the way across the full length of the court to get there. Especially problematic for Bird who was loathed in Detroit and likely to take a few shots from fans.If you watch the video at the end of that game (which is on RUclips) Pistons fans were already coming on the court and hugging players, Chuck Daly was waving fans off the court, and security guards and police came over to escort the Celtics starters off the court. They weren't doing it just to be jerks.

      @@toddjohnson271 You're definitely missing the point. Great champions, not at legendary levels. It's been said to death why and how Detroit beat Chicago multiple times. Boston is a different story. When all four clubs played their best basketball Detroit was by far the weakest.

      @@chrisdell5679 A Bird steal and horrific foul call away from possibly two more chips. Were the Celtics done in 87 ,88, 89? Yes, I'm a homer but Detroit is right in there. Just didn't have one publicized marquee player.

    I always thought the Bulls teams with Horace Grant and Paxton, were better than the later teams with Rodman and Kerr. Their records weren't quite as good, but they had better depth and balance.

    • @4149stonepony
      @4149stonepony 8 лет назад +3

      No sir, for starters, Kerr was a better shooter than Paxson, Rodman was a better rebounder than Grant. The Bulls of the 2nd string of titles also had better bench. I saw both and the dominance of the 95-98 group was unreal.

    • @AncientChi

      There was no difference between Pax and Kerr , they both got every game winner they took, Rodman and Grant were both pretty evenly good on the team id say as far as Bulls team basketball , they just had six unreal teams anyway

    The turning point for the Bulls. Finally to get over the hurdle that were the Pistons who just owned the Bulls. I remember the Bulls losing to the Pistons in 7 games the season before which was the first season I started watching basketball (being only in 2nd grade). I was jumping up and down on the couch in the final seconds in delight watching the Pistons get swept. What a run this was over much of this decade. 6 titles in 8 seasons. Summer break would start and the Bulls were usually in the finals. What a way to start the break!
