If the going to be park homes can you only live on them 10 months off the year
@@truth3358 That is incorrect i'm afraid, park homes or residential caravans on residential sites are for living in all year round. It's only holiday parks where they have restrictions on how many days a year you can be there which is determined by the license granted to that site by its local council. We have three certificates of lawfulness for three residential caravans/park homes and pay council tax every month the same as regular houses in our area.
Hi I'm going to be doing a channel on you tube soon
can I ask how you got so many subscribers in one year...did you advertise any help would be much appreciated thank-You
@@truth3358 no, as they are residential you can live in them all year round 😊 it's only holiday ones that have time restrictions
Im a 61 year old engineer and so proud of what you have achieved you have done everything perfectly best wishes
Thanks Steven, made me smile 🙌
I have been noticing this also. Really Really enjoying this content. Top Builder right there!!
Steve, thanks so much for the kind words ☺
You’re doing great 👍
Just make sure you invest in really good hearing protection- noise cancelling headphones are expensive but worth their weight !
Look forward to more blogs on your journey.
Maybe you didn't film it or maybe the concrete mixer driver said that you didn't need it because the skab is so shallow, but I didn't see you getting the air bubbles out of it by prodding it just after it was poured.
Hope that this action wasn't necessary. 24:49
I personally am very, very proud of you both! You cleared that land with recycling everything you could and that goes a long way with me. It took longer but you did it all correctly! Now? Here you go! Onto making your homes, Wonderful! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much Ava! Really feel like we are on a roll now 😊
Awesome job guys!
I do this sort of thing every day so I’ve got a few tips that you may find useful
1. When compacting the sub base spray it with a hose, you’ll get a lot better compaction.
2. When installing your boxing use pegs and screws and adjust to height with the laser level, don’t worry about small gaps under timber especially if you’re using a DPM (you can pile some loose stone around the outside if you’re worried)
3. Concrete - you add some retarder to the mix to give yourself more working time in hot weather. Also in a slab that size you should really be cutting in control joints to about 1/4 the depth of your slab (best done the next morning when in summer) aim for sections no bigger than 10-15m2.
All that said you guys did an amazing job for your first time. Keep up the good work!
Hi Ben, thanks for taking the time to write to us. I did wet the sub base a bit at the end of the first day but didn't go nuts with it as didn't want to get the clay soil underneath wet and then that area to sink down.
When you say pegs, just bits of wood for levelling the shuttering? would you need to put loads of wooden pegs of just use a few for levelling then use the rebar/metal stakes to support the shuttering?
Is it too late now to cut in the joints now it's gone off? do you leave the cuts clear or fill with some sort of silcone?
Thanks again, really appreciate the advise.
@@joncampoutwest Great job for your first slab, you clearly did your research. I'd definitely cut the control joints in now even if it has cracked. I'd usually go for cuts every 8-12ft apart for a 4 inch slab and always go smaller if it doesn't work out mathematically, so just divide it up equally . Fill the joints with SikaFlex EBT sealant afterwards so you don't get any spalling from water getting in and freezing.
The point of cutting the joints is to get the concrete to crack where you want it to i.e. in the bottom of the cuts you've made. It's a bit like a KitKat.
@@joncampoutwest no worries! Pegs as in wooden stakes with a spike on the end. They act as lateral support (the same as your rebar) as well as giving you the ability to adjust the height by lifting the timber and screwing it to the peg. The added benefit is screwing also prevents the timber from lifting if any concrete seeps underneath.
At that point you can just mesh and pour as normal but if you’re worried about needing to order extra concrete you can fill and compact any hollows in the basecourse.
As for cutting it certainly wouldn’t hurt to cut it now but if it’s cracked already then it’s already found it’s shrinkage points.
Hope that answers your questions! Im happy to answer anything else you’d like to know!
You manage to pack more information into one episode than others do in 4. And you point out your mistakes plus how you overcome them. That is helpful to others who might be thinking of doing the same. Everything always takes at least twice as long as you expect. Use that as a yardstick and you will be fine!
Yes good 👍....they don't fanny about drawing it out ..
Just to make it totally clear to whoever may not be aware;
Yes, recycling as much as possible will obviously add more time until completion.
However, once you get into a rhythm, it is as nothing really in the grand scheme of things. After all, recycling is just making tidy piles of rubbish rather than one big one.
The true kick in the teeth is that _all_ demos take longer than expected. Like the next stage of a build ~ construction ~ it will take just about long as it takes!
Thanks Stephanie, we like our videos to be as realistic as possible 😊
the UK version of Trent and Allie - love it. You are doing amazing
Will give them a search now, not seen them before.
You guys don't skimp on any detail. You pay attention to every step. Your finished product will be quality from bottom to top. Good job!
Cheers 😊
What I like is that even though they are not american, they have used imperial measurements for us. It is an epic way to bring all the audiences together. This is interesting to watch. I plan to buy a house that needs work so it is encouraging.
So good to see you are now able to start your journey creating your home build, it's been such hard work for you to get to this point. I'm so looking forward to watching your progress. ❤
Thanks so much Linda 😊 we are so excited for what's next!
I can’t believe how much you have achieved in the 12 months that you’ve been there. You are such hard workers! I so admire your work ethic . Well done 🎉🎉🎉🤩
Thanks so much Edna! Can't wait to see where we get over these next 12 months 😊
Been checking the channel every day for two weeks for a new upload, I think I speak for everyone when i say
AHH! So epic. Thanks for all the support 😊❤🙌
I'm sure someone has since told you but you can't compact dry stone. Soak it well before compacting.
Thanks for the tip, didn't know that 😊
Tip for next time with the levels - use small wooden pegs or similar to mark the height required (eg, 150mm depth) when you compact the hardcore they should be covered just. Place them frequently then remove after and just throw some material in their holes.
Spencer, that sounds like bloody good idea mate! love that, thanks for the tip.
@@joncampoutwest I’m doing my driveway at the minute and got sick and tired of checking levels every 30 seconds so feel your pain. Will be worth it.
I love watching your videos and It's so cool to watch another couple work so well together! My husband and I are in the states and we flip houses! Great job and Cheers!!!
It is such a joy to watch your videos! They encourage me to keep going with our project. My husband and I purchased a 10,000 square foot church that was built in stages between 1949 and 1977. We are transforming into a prayer room with internship quarters. We tackle so many projects day after day and sometimes the amount of work is overwhelming, but you give me the courage to keep going, and to do things with excellence. P.S. I wish I was your next door neighbor so I could offer you a free place to wash your clothes, take a shower and rest. You are a lovely couple!!! Kathy
Wow, Kathy your project sounds amazing! So pleased you enjoy watching ours unfold too 😊 thank you for your lovely comment xxx
Great work guys, I have poured a fair bit of concrete my self and I know it is not easy. Also don't be so hard on yourselves it's your first time and you are learning, so what took 5 hours on this slab will only take two hours on the next slab.❤ Things are really moving along now, you will be open for us to visit in no time. 👍👍👍👍👍
Excited to see how we find pouring the second one 😊
Pleasure to watch this happily married couple progress thro their project. Chris from the mountains of Northern Thailand.
Thanks Chris 😊
Hi Jon now that you have used a DPC membrane that will stop the concrete running out thru the gap. Get the shutter level don’t worry about the gaps under shutter the DPC will help plus just pack some stone against the outside off the shutter. At that depth of concrete there is virtually no load on shutter. This will save all that time trying to pack stone under the shutter.
Thanks peter, we'll give this a go for the second slab, definitely was a mission on this one packing it under the shuttering 🤣
Well done guys! It’s all starting to take shape.
Thanks Helen! So exciting!
Well, it's all going well by the looks of it. Great to see how the project is progressing. As I watch I wish I was 40 years younger so I might have the energy to do something similar!
Thanks RG 😊 really feel like we are on a roll now!
Well done guys, heres a tip as ive built concrete foundations for heaps of buildings over 20 years. When you set up your boxing for the concrete, first peg one corner square only the top of the boxing matters as this is your finished floor level. Then peg the opposite corner like you did to get the square angles. Smack a wooden peg in the ground somewhere out the way to the height you want your f.f.l. finshed floor. This is your Datum point. You can set your laser off this, and then go around all your boxing untill its the same height. Doesnt matter about gaps as its only a thin slab pour of 100mm. Now staple your Black poly dpc over back of boxing . This will stop it blowing out. Nice cyas
I can’t believe the amount of followers you’ve got in a year. Well done and keep up the good work😊
I noticed that too… it’s great content and a very interesting project that a lot of people are interested in. Well done to both of them 🤘🏻🙌🏻👍👌🏻
We can't believe how many people are interested in what we are doing, we only planned to film it so we'd have something to look back at in years to come and here we are with nearly 100K, insane! but very much appreciated.
@@joncampoutwestyou’ll have a silver plaque soon…I’m going to buy you another coffee but use the money for some knee protectors!
@@paulgray2387 Thank you Paul 🤣 my dad told me i need some as i've inherited his dodgy knees
You can purchase a concrete Groover and put an expansion joint through the middle of the slab if you wanted too for the other slabs. Or cut a line through the centre with a disc cutter once the concrete has set a bit as it just gives it that little bit of play to expand and contract.
It's so nice when you're done with the demolition phase and can begin construction. What excellent progress.
Thanks Joan, we really feel like we are getting somewhere now 😊
That was a lot of work & a massive learning curve & you guys knocked it out of the park. Really well done. You two are a really good team x
Thanks Andrea! Can't believe we got the first concrete slab done! 😊
Absolutely love what you two are doing. You both work so hard, well done . I am so looking forward to watching your journey.
Thanks so much Janice! Excited to show you what's next 😊
The work you guys have done makes me exhausted just watching. The care and love you are putting in. ❤
Love the way you two work together. I wish you two all the luck in the world at the end of all your hard work it’s going to be beautiful. God bless.
these videos will help so many people wishing to do the same thing
Hopefully we show you don't have to have experience to give it a try 😊
Lucky timing - bit of a treat before going back to work! Love your video style and story. Best of luck for the next steps :)
Hope you enjoy the rest of your day at work 😊 glad we could brighten up your day 🎉
I was wondering how you guys were getting on. Great to see how much you've achieved with the concrete slab. Well done, it must've been a tad nerve-racking being newbies. Congrats. Looking forward to future videos. Good luck.😍🍀
Thank you! We are so happy the first one is done 😊 looking forward to show you what we have been up to this week!
Great teamwork as ever and wow what a steep learning curve that all must have been !! xx
Excited to do the next one to see how we found it now we have some experience haha 😊
Boy talk about hard workers. Sitting here wishing I had won the lottery so I could send you a big bunch. God Bless you two.
Oh you are too sweet! thank you 😊
Once again a brilliant update, and you are both becoming very professional construction experts. You will have appreciated both how much money you have saved by doing all this work yourself, plus of course you can take those frustrating hours to get your measures and levels 100% on that some contractors may be lessing willing to accept. In terms of cracking, assume you have been advised to create expansion joints in the slab to allow for any further movements and also I note thankfully you have allowed for a slope to recognise water flow (not that it ever rains much in Wales LOL). I would for belt and braces create a french drain to capture the runoff and flow into your soakaway. This will greatly help keep ground under the base dry and reduce risk of any freezing / water heave on the concrete. I would also consider for the final pad is to finish the surface with a sweeping brush to give you grip (especially in winter conditions) and also hides any minor cracking. As always hope these minor hints help out but you will when finished have the option of being professional off grid construction consultants as a backup to your core profession of visual arts.
So close to 100K subscribers; crazy to have been a part of the journey 😊
Thanks for sticking around and supporting us 🙌
@@joncampoutwest been a pleasure. Keep up the tidy work.
Loving this project and seeing it progress. Good work you two .
Thanks so much! So pleased you are enjoying watching the progress
You both are so lovely and your teamwork is beautiful : ) Well done, that a sweet milestone. The slab look great!
Your Canadian West Coast friend : )
Thanks so much Colette 😊 we are so excited the first one is done 🥳
Amazing effort guys,it looks great..as does the land it's beautiful after cleanup and it's only going to get better, Maggie you are so adorable❤
The land is just transforming in front of our eyes! The best feeling waking up each day and seeing it changing for the better. Thank you! Maggie is our dream girl 😊
Hello Jon and Emilie:well thank you for a very stellar video today. For two people who do not do building for a job, what a great job you two did for this video. You two knocked it out of the park for getting the cement slab ready for your home. All working together and the finish product was better then most of the cement footings that I have seen done by the so called professional. Very nice job and this will give you a good base to build your home on. I am very happy for you two and a great job done by you two. I wish you two all the best and hopefully the weather will get better as the summer goes a long. Have fun and relax now that you have these slabs ready to go. You just have to believe in your selves.
Phil, thanks so much! We can't believe the first one is done, feeling so excited for what's next to come! Thanks for the support 😊
I came to the comments to say that I am SO proud of you both and noticed many others are too. You both should be proud of what you have accomplished. I cannot wait for more!
Thank you so much Kristin! Can't believe how supportive everyone has been! xx
I love how you work together and also that your videos are so focussed and yet, very human :) I wish you an awesome build!
oh thank you 😊 your comment as made our day. We always want to come across as real/human
What an awesome start to your build, I am so impressed by the way you both work and are amazed how Emily manages to look so beautiful throughout all that hard graft no matter what the weather throws at you. Cannot wait to see the next stage, this is so interesting. Heaps of respect.😊
I think you both did an outstanding job. Must be exciting getting the first slab down.
Really doesn't feel real! So amazing and looking out of the caravan and seeing it!
The bought of you are incredibly hard working and a great team. I am 67 and doing mine on my own it's a lot of work but I don't mind it. It's my first property. I've ever owned 5ac with a small prefabricated cabin I bought. I am doing all of the insulation my self and put up fence for my two dogs. It is such a joy to see my dream come true.❤🙏😊
Sounds amazing Marie 😊 we hope you are loving every second! We are getting ready to put our fencing up for Maggie too! She's worked out she can run from our land directly over the road to her favourite neighbours of ours haha! So fencing need to go in asap
@CampOutWest Maggie is a cutie. We definitely have to keep our babies safe 💕
a bucket of very wet Three to One sand and cement mixed well and floated skimmed or brush in and around the cracks will make it easier on the eye "the sloppier the better".
Thanks for the heads up ben, will see if the cracks open up anymore, at the moment they are tiny and will be under the cabin out of site but still might be worth doing that to keep the water out of it and protect from freeze thaw over time.
Really enjoyed your construction, I understood your anxiousness on forming the concrete after forming a garage slab myself.
Youre living the dream.
Peter, España
It's coming along. If i ever find myself in your neck of the woods will have to come glamping. 😂
Hi you two🎉 wow great progress, so pleased for you both after all the hard work you have done over the past twelve months. Fabulous job. Tony xx
Thanks Tony! Such an amazing milestone! Maggie has loved sun bathing on the new base too 😂😂😂
So exciting to get to this stage! Well done guys. Love seeing your updates.
Thanks so much Claire! Glad you are enjoying 😊
This is stunning, well done guys.
Really enjoying watching it all come together 🎉
Thanks so much AC! 😊
Wow, I am so impressed. Thanks for the entertainment, and good luck with your lovely project. Peace and good will.
Brilliant progress…all that hard work. Building up to pouring the slab and now you’ve got the foundations for your lovely home to be. 👍💪🏻
Thanks you! Can't believe the first one is done 😊
You are a very impressive partnership with a fabulous can-do attitude.
Thanks William!
omg how satisfying is that smooth, concrete end result!!!!
Hi guys ,what a journey you have taken on ,you done a great job of cleaning the site recycling what you could and selling the scrap so the money you got was ploughed straight into the site ,you are doing a great job of preparing the base for your home it looks good what you have done I’m no builder but watching you two I’m learning a lot ,the wacker plate dose a great job just mind your feet and the blisters on your hands ,till the next time take care keep safe,John 🌹🇬🇧👍👀😆😂🤩🙏☝️🫣🤭
Thank you John, appreciate it, definitely had some blisters but our skin it toughening up now 😀
I've followed your journey from the beginning . Im so proud of you both. Well done. Sending you both love from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦. XO
WE PUT 2' X 2' SQUARES OF REBAR ALL ACROSS THE GRAVEL, THEN POUR CONCRETE TO PREVENT CRACKING. I JUST HAVE MY METRIC CONVERSION OUT WHILE WATCHING YOU. MAKES IT SO MUCH EASIER TO FIGURE. I THINK I WOULD HAVE EXPANDED 2' ON YOUR WIDTH THOUGH. NOW I'VE JUST COST YOU ANOTHER $5,000. LOL LOVE YOU TWO. ❤️
Have your ground sheet ready for the lorry next time. Just tip the stone straight on the sheet save the back and forth with the digger.
Hessian cloth is best for keeping concrete damp and helps reduce cracking.
Mix up a grout and fill the cracks in. This will stop any water ingression.
Wishing you luck with the remainder of the concrete work. The first ones always a learning curve.
Thanks for the tip Colin! Will give that a try for the next one 😊
I will probably never have to build something like that myself, but I definitely enjoyed watching you telling me about it. 😂 Your videos are great and the two of you come across as really really lovely folks. Cheers ❤
Well done both. You are definately getting things done.
Thanks Ian! Excited for the next few weeks of progress 😊
@@CampOutWest Hope the weather hold out for you.
You did some hard graft clearing all that and with day jobs may God bless you more
Great idea laying multiple slabs at the same time.
We thought it was the best use of our time! It was just a shame we didn't have enough money to do both concrete slabs at the same time 😅
If the ground is really dusty, a cheap alternative is to use flour to mark excavation lines 👌 great effort so far and a well presented video
Huh!! I'd better watch in it's entirety before i speak! ❤ lol❤
You have been working so hard all year well done , and you actually look happy in this video you come across normal so fed up when presenting
🤣
thanks for the feedback, didn't realise we came across fed up haha, it's still a bit un-natural to us talking on camera haha
It's looking good guys.
The cracks in the concrete you can brush dry cement powder into the cracks and damp it to fill the gaps.
If done the day after it's laid it works best.
Secondly to avoid the ups and downs in your stone. Set up your shutters then use a string line over your shutters and a stick with a depth mark on. Work steadily from one end to the other and you can easy see where you need to add a little material.
Look forward to seeing the progress
Thanks John and Emily very enjoyable watching your progress x
Absolutely amazing how far you’ve come, been watching since beginning, the hard work and dedication will and is paying off xx can’t wait for next one ❤
Thanks so much Tracey! 😊 Can't wait to show you what's next 😊
If you need to mark out sites in the future for excavation use a bag of flour, it makes a great substitute for marking paint.
Thanks for the tip Jason 😊 we even had flour in the cupboard!
Well done you lovely young people, l wish you all the luck in the world, and a happy healthy life. XX❤
Wow, didn't realise you were near Ammanford. All of my fathers family lived in / near Gwaen Cae Gurwen , and his 93 year old Uncle still does. He would have definitely worked in the mines around your area for sure! I used to spend every summer there as a kid! Makes me love your channel & efforts even more!! Marcus
I love following your adventures! Thanks for sharing! Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ ❤❤❤
Thank you Nurse Judi 😊😊😊
Onya guys. Glad its coming along
Feel like we are on a roll now!
Thank God you are 2 to do the job
Well done, you two. Had to laugh when I heard you say, "We spent way too long..." We said the same thing every week about one thing or another during our small home build.
hahah! You always think it's going to take less time than it does 😅 hope your house build is going well!
been waiting for this!
Hope you enjoyed 😊
Great progress so far. Few tips for future work. Wet the base (rock) before compacting it. Optimal moisture is just before free water (if squeezing in hand). For the size of the concrete pad you are pouring you need to add some expansion joints. That will help control the cracking. Also you don’t need to cover the slab to let it cure. In the US we pour at 100F + without covering and no surface cracks. Not sure if the UK has concrete curing compound or not but it does help with the curing process. Any questions feel free to reach out.
I agree, and would also say: add some moisture to the dirt to help it compact better before you add the compacted hardcore.
As a ground worker I would not worry about the gaps under the shuttering put soil or sub-base up against the outside of the shuttering and take it away later
My husband and I did something very similar to this project last summer. But we didn’t have a laxer level, use string and a level. It’s not prefect but it turned out fine. We didn’t end with a concrete slab, but did everything else exactly as you. But we did also do small concrete slabs elsewhere on our property. Ugh, so much work!! But our property looks fantastic and we are so very proud. You should be also, of the work you are doing.
Oh hadn't thought of a string level, we will have a look into them, thanks for tip and we hope your project is going well 😊
Loving this 🙌🙌 your going above and beyond, these tiny houses will last for hundreds of years 😂😂
Fingers crossed they do 😂😂😂
looking forward to the next one guys...............
What a lovely couple, wishing you all the best.
Thanks so much Rd! 😊
Found your video on Facebook. Subbed on RUclips. I have been really enjoying the content and proud of you for this amazing job yall have done. From Texas USA
I wouldn't be worried about a few cracks in the concrete for your park home base. A few years back we put an extension on the back of our Edwardian house. We had a very positive relationship with the local building inspector. We had cleared the site at the back of the property and in doing do you could see the original foundations which were simply rough bricks patted down into the original clay.
The Building Inspectors comment was
"How old is this house"?
"About 100 years" we replied
"So here it is, three floors high, sat on some bricks squished into the clay, stood up for 100 years. So now I'm going to tell you to dig down a metre and fill it up with re inforcedd concrete. Archaeologists will dig this stuff up in the future, do a few calculations and be utterly puzzled because they can't find the remains of an eight storey structure".
Use some good strong cable ties to strap the steel mesh together. Saves time and still works the same as soon the concrete is set its not moving. Great work 👏
I want in. Immediately!! I can't believe y'all would do this to me. Lol I thought we were family.
So excited for you both. I really admire you for the gact that you're tackling things you've never attempted before! Well done guys! 😀💜
Thanks so much Suzie! We can't believe we are doing it 🥳
I'm very glad the youtube algorithm pointed me your way!
I can't lie, I'm extremely jealous you've been able to do this. Id love to go off grid and build on my own land. But seeing as I'm a private Rental tenant this is just escapism for me currently haha
Thanks Will, we rented for over ten years so we know it's hard, especially paying off someone else's mortgage for them.
Can't wait to come and stay when you're open! It's incredible what you're doing! Did you really have no experience of building or even DIY when you started? You seem to know what you're doing or at least have confidence to give it a go. I'm so impressed by how you repaired and renovated the caravan you're living in, never mind everything else! How did you know how to deal with the problems with that?
No matter what keep going guys
Base is looking great.....nearly 100k subs ....Fab
5 subscribers away! Madness!
What a team!!!!
I'm looking forward to seeing your next video take care ❤️🇦🇺🦘
It's really interesting --to see what system issues you have to navigate..because most tiny house projects are off the beaten track.
it must be an absolute joy to finally begin your 'dream'--after that mammoth task of clearing the site.
Hey you two, congrats on another milestone. I love your attention to detail and the honesty about mistakes made.
It is inspiring to see you build new life out of the rubble of an old one. Keep going, I wish you good fortune.
Thanks so much Richard, so excited to have the first slab done 😊 thanks for the support!
Huge cost and time saver having to be able to use the old sewer. Hope your good luck continues.
We had a camera run through all the old drains and sewers last week, sadly quite a bit of damage to it, as it's lots of very old clay pipes, so some repair work needed but very very lucky it's there!
i only came across your videos a month ago when i saw the 1 year off grid video. i have been blown away with how hard you guys have worked for this all. I cant wait to see it complete.
Thanks so much! Glad you found us on RUclips and enjoy 😊
It’s all coming together now the finish is in sight
Really feel like we are on a roll now 😊
