In the words of Project Binky - "make the noise"! Nice new toy Charlie and it's good that it showed up the error in the helix before you got any further on. And possibly consigned what turned out to be perfectly good locos to the scrap heap. It has probably paid for itself already in that regard.
Having seen the amount of engineering you've put into this helix I now realise mine was doomed to failure from the start, but we live and learn! Cheers

The human eye is a weird thing right enough. Perfectly laid, dead straight tracks can look 𝑠𝑜 good but there's something about long, sweeping curves that are really pleasing on the eye. For some reason, it doesn't seem to be as effective on a single track, or maybe that's just me. I always think that a single track looks best with curves all over the place; seems to be quite 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 too.
It's hard to tell how the new bit is going to look; we'll get a better idea when the rising gradient to Barnstaple gets installed but, so far, it's looking great Charlie.👍👌😁

    Nice vid.
All of this is a good reminder that planning the helix is crucial. The rise must be enough to clear the track below, allowing for the thickness of roadbed, upon completion of the first revolution. The radius needed to do that can be calculated as the rise divided by the quantity of the decimal of the grade percent, pi, and 2.
Ex: for an N scale helix rising 2.75" each revolution, the radius curve for a 1% grade is 2.75/(.01*3.14*2). About 44".

Hello Charlie. Success well done. The mini level makes a difference in this height & carpentry format for the model railroad. Couplers are tricky due to their shanks sometimes annoying depending on the car body from the coaches. Well like the Chessie System old logo : "For Progress" your layout is working well I'm pleased , as for the half inch plywood or 1/4 inch hopefully you'll get a good quality soon. Really impressed with this. Its looking a LOT better and great to see it working well.
For the station board, above the helix, i would concider constructing it so it potentially sits on a frame with Dowels, aswell as not laying the track straight accross the joins (dcc concepts copper clad sleepers are excellent for this)
You could then have the station board basically unbolt and be able to remove the whole area.
Will be a LOT easier to work on the scenery side than leaning over a very spiky looking helix!
Plonk it on a work bench and away you go! 😀

"MDF is a product made by the devil..." I loved it! I made the grave mistake of using MDF for me "control table" and had all sorts of trouble. So i made several alternate meanings for the bloody material. Hi Charlie,
The Prototype mountain railroads that had many challenges and needed steep grades, (like many railroads in Colorado with 3% - 3.5% and higher grades), were trying to gain as much rise as possible in the limited space they had available to meet the demand. They had a method of applying grades. They used to at the beginning of the grade have a steeper incline while much of the train was still on more level ground and then they would ease the grade to the ruling grade. This would gain them a few extra feet of rise without bogging down the engine or causing driver slippage.
Example: They might have a 3.5% grade for the first part of the grade (while the trailing freight cars were still on more level ground) and then they would ease the grade to a lesser grade, like say 3%, when all the train was now on the incline. This way they picked up extra rise and could reduce the ruling grade up the incline.
I have done this on one part of my HO mountain railroad where I have steep grades, which comes in handy if you're trying to get that extra 1/2" of rise in the space you have to make the climb.
Just thought I'd share that info. We can learn a lot from the prototype and it is interesting how they solved problems. All the best Charlie.

@@ChadwickModelRailway Yes, I understand Charlie. Neither did I think of that until I learned from researching the prototype mountain railroads. (It's actually fun researching and always good to learn how a real railroad solved problems). I don't know what is says about me! But one of the most absorbing videos on RUclips I have watched!! A genuine sense of anticipation at seeing it working, and total admiration at your skills from the point of view of design execution and carpentry.
One thing, have you given thought as to making the front side of the board wide enough for the necessary scenery as the track curves out the top of the helix, as it would seem to me, that quite a bit of woodworking will need to be done to create at least the frame for the 'nearside' of the cutting as the track disappears into the tunnel. If you follow what I'm saying that is.
However given the enormous challenge you have given yourself when you embarked on this new plan for your layout, this issue will I'm sure not present any significant issues.
When your wife said 'that looks dangerous' I wonder if she is referring to the dangerous enormity of the project your undertaking! 😉

Hi Charlie, another great video, makes a helix very tempting.
I would be tempted to take the scenery part way round the top level of the helix, you would get the benefit of those lovely sweeping curves, and the trains would disapear around the corner before entering into the tunnel.
    Keep up the good work

Well, Charlie, it works!! At first, I did not see the problem and then it fell into place. The gauge that you made could not possibly fit under the first ring and then that meant that all the rings would have to be lowered and hence the need of a top ring. It must have taken a long time to sort that out. The clearance in height is a bit tight an American observation car would mean people losing their heads. A job well done. I much invest in one of those spirit levels as you know I am facing some inclines and I have changed the plan again. Martin. (Thailand)

Since we are all getting nostalgic this week, I think you would have been great on Blue Peter, although I haven’t seen any sticky back plastic on the layout. So pleased you finally reduced the gradient, your engines will be all the better for it too, track work exiting helixit looks great. On gradient measurement a note of caution just because it's digital doesn't mean it's accurate, steps 1.99 to 2.08% is a 4.5% error, and if it's resolution is + or - one increment that is a whopping 9% error and that's before we add in calibration accuracies. Far more accurate manually measuring or using a simple spirit level and gradient triangle. It being repeatable (subtly different from accurate) might just have worked for you though. Glad you are pleased with it all. Stephen

      But in the helix?

    • @stephenpike3147
      @stephenpike3147 3 года назад

Yes, you have equal segment arcs, each must rise by the same amount, carefully check each for the critical first turn then use your gauge block for equal spacing between following turns to set those. Sure a bright led display is far easier to read, but as said ther is a significant margin of error in its reading as you rightly highlighted. Am glad it showed up your first turn gradient error.

Flattening that level out really seems to have worked a charm. That would have been a programming nightmare to have had to remember which trains needed to go to full throttle going up the helix.
I use one of those digital levels to inspect construction sites for compliance with accessibility laws, and every one of them, w/o regard to price paid, is utterly random at measuring percent rise (luckily the government regulations take this into account). In reality they are much better at roof pitch as described in inches per 12" run. Sigh.
