In the death montage, at 2:43 there's 3 frames where she's staring at the bounce pad and a coconut falls on her head, presumably killing her. During the escape at 6:53 she stops early to avoid the coconut trap. The coconut is positioned exactly over where she should stand to activate the bounce pad. Everything hinged on this one coconut lol.

@Cristobal Bravo Allendes The rapidly scrolling text is from I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. A famous horror story, one of the most chilling I've ever read. Later adapted into an equally chilling video game. Here's a quote from AM, the artificial intelligence that torments the characters: Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer-thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles, it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. Whoa, all these years I thought they simply didn't have mouths because of the cute chibi design of their ingame sprites. Apparently it was another reference to "I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream"

Man, I really need to play through the 1995 adventure game at some point. I'm pretty sure that makes up, like, 70% of the narrative, since, when I read through a PDF of the original short story, that iconic speech wasn't in it.
She was in there for over 100 years, trying so many game overs...that wasn't even her first. Watch the scrolling text when she jumps back in...at THAT point, it's the like 100 year mark
I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but at around 6:12 up to the point where she breaks the console, you can see the “ghost” of the male character and she is following the ghost exactly
I have a theory is that the game they bought was probably used. That someone probably played the game, and possibly infected it taking the to the Kaizo dimension. She must been following that ghost shadow as the last person who played it.

I know my comment is 3 months late, but not just that... I am pretty sure the final boss fight where her guy is hooked on tubes, she did all of that on the first run, or atleast after the part where she was revived back. Talk about honing her skills and reflexes to the point that she had beaten the final stage at first try with pure skills.
you dont understand. this is a kaizo game. the gimmick of kaizo games other than insanity level difficulty is you always have 0 lives. every time you die you have to start over from the beginning. she was faced with the game over screen every time she died. its just that at the end it was showing how absolutely tired she was. that she just wanted to give up but persevered and committed to saving her boyfriend.
@@MasterOfTruck shes never played any games in the 90s games were much harder back then. She at least got move control book. Old games in the 90 just threw you right in with no explanation. like takeshi castle
@@deesmith8576 A lot of 90's platformers actually had fairly comprehensive instruction books, and/or areas of the game designed to teach you how to use various mechanics that were available to you. I actually like to think that the part where she died was scripted since when she has to replay the levels they became harder. Similar to replaying the game in Ghost's and Goblins.
Coming back to this again. This animation is a masterclass in story escalation. Moments that bring more tears to my eyes: Her grimace of pain/realisation at 2:00 The death routlette begins to *repeat* at 2:37, faster and faster The secondary impact of the boss's laser, at 3:41 3:46 -> --4:12--, enough sai- WAIT A MINUTE IS THAT THE HATE MONOLOGUE? 4:59 -> 5:04, She loses him again, but flashes a *stone cold* glare at the wall of saws And 5:20 absolutely breaks me. The apex of the story, music motifs, momentum and brutality of the Trap. The main leitmotif in its aggressive march and rigid tempo. Her flawless reaction time. The *mesmerizing* clarity of the laser show. The sync of the audio and visual cues together on screen is nothing short of what synthesia must feel like. Our protagonist is at her most powerful. Her Husband in Distress, at his most vulnerable. The splashes of blood and the spasms of the machine have broken the boundary between mechanical and fleshy tones. The rest is falling action. And so many visual goodies that rewatching frame by frame is rewarding many times over. Guy Collins has blended a visual *dream* with Leslie Wai's evergreen hellbeat. With the nostalgia of the first time you ever played Sonic the Hedgehog. Bravo. Bravissimo.

The story is about an AI who destroyed humanity except for 5 people to torture for 109 years by creating "metaphorical adventures" based on the characters flaws. This could be how Guy Collins Animation was inspired to make this.

At the end when they get out there’s caution tape that says “ Do not enter: Abandoned building” and there’s graffiti all over the walls. This indicates that they’ve been lost inside the game for months.
Holy shit what animation sorcery is this? Action packed, original, well paced, intelligent, truly epic AND hits you right in the feels. Guy Collins, you absolutely killed it
This video has been recommended to me for years, I have always tried to avoid it because I thought it would be something weird that had been recommended to me by chance, but now that i see it i realize i've been running from a masterpiece, a museum-worthy piece of art, this is the best animation i've ever seen, and i'm completely grateful that I could see it
You have no idea how deep this video actually went. The video itself was a game, a devilishly genius puzzle. It's impossible to solve it again now, because RUclips removed the annotations, but you can look up the true ending if you're curious.

At 7:37 theres a single frame where you can see part of the house deload, revealing some coins. I dont know what that implies, but if I had to guess it means they probably didnt actually get out. (Especially cuz of the continue screen immediately after)
Imagine having a girlfriend that would gift you a sentient gaming console and then save you despite her trying and dying thousand times for you. That's true love right there.
You know watching this again I never noticed that towards the end, the machine looks in sorrow as its attacking her and once shes grabbed him and its collapsing in on itself, it looks happy that she was able to beat it.
I’ve been struggling to get away from the video games. My perception is they were a happy couple but the game console go between and he’d get sucked into it too often so she had to fight a battle to keep the person she loved so she jumped through all the hoops to get deep down to rip him from his addiction. By the end the house is destroyed from arguments and the power of feeling helpless and mindlessly too attached to care for the surrounding environment. By the end the console is gone, he agrees not to touch it finally. The hand slip I thought was gonna be the ultimatum, will he return to the games or go with her and live a happier life outside the screen.
annotations were a thing back then, it allowed this video to have secret non public links mid video, sadly yt took the feature down, you can still find the secrets on yt though.
Holly molly... i can just imagine her now playing all kind of platform games, beating any level with only one hand and minimum effort. And when someone ask her why is she so good... she would only say:.. "I've been through worst"
Petition to make this into an actual game edit: also yeah i realize fancy pants is a thing, but I’d like a game using the same characters, storyline, and gameplay.
4:12 HOLY SHIT, 6 YEARS AFTER I FIRST SAW THIS MASTERFUL ANIMATION AND ONLY NOW DO I GET WHY THEY DON'T HAVE MOUTHS INSIDE THE GAME; IT'S A BIG REFERENCE TO "I have no mouth, but I must scream". That's why the AM monologue is also present in the command screen.
Even though most of the vid takes place inside a game, I don't think this video is about video games or video game addiction at all, unlike several comments I read. For me, the first few seconds of the video tell the whole story. Look at the guy's face when he comes home (0:22), and the way he drops his jacket. So much sadness, so much depression. That's what the video is about, in my opinion. It's about a depressed guy, and how his wife/gf tries as hard as she can to help him. She tries to make him happy with that NES/Kaizo Trap, and she tries to overcome all the hardships and difficulties on her way, to pull him out of his miserable condition. And it's hard. Yes, it's insanely hard. Giving up would be so much easier, and she contemplates that option for a brief moment, but she "continues" anyway, because she loves him and wants to do everything she can to save him. However, this is what the final boss battle tells us : she can't do it only by herself. She can't quite beat the boss until the guy starts pulling out those tubes attached to his body, making it all glitch. In other words, in order for the guy to get out of that depression, he does need his lover's support, but he also has to do his share. Anyway, that's my interpretation of the video. Feel free to tell me what you think about it, whether you agree or not...
its interesting that when at the end he pulls the wire from his chest it revives the girl back into the game definately lots of different themes in this
Small detail I noticed: after the part where she gets to the continue screen, all the scenes had ended right before she died, meaning she had to restart several times to make it back. Wowie.
@@bellyisadorable2754 Not only that but in the scenes of her redoing the scenes she dies all 3 times. She got killed by 3 tigers, fell into lava, and fell into spikes respectively. It cuts away before you see the deaths.
@@bellyisadorable2754 she actually restarted many time before she even met her boyfriend but when they only show the time when she need to choose after she met him and die is because imagine in her state at the time how she exhausted she must feel it like when you are almost clearing the stage but you need to redo all over again the feeling is not the same as you are failing halfway or before that but despite how exhausted and how many failures she face she keep pushing that is epic
I will NEVER get over this video. It's so good and, like...I love that moment when she had the chance to give up, but she powered through. Especially because, in the part before it, you see ALL of the bloodstains showing how she had to learn though painful experience. And she probably felt each and every death.
This video is old but its good, actually i didnt see a comment talking about how much time did she take to complete the game, if you notice 7:22 , the house is full of graffiti, and it is also surrounded by a signal that says "abandoned", realizing that it took to the girl more than a year to save her boyfriend...

But there Final Boss been Defeated would caused spawn a Black Hole them entire world will collapsed outside of The Kaizo Trap must be completely destroyed.
I just noticed that when she frees her bf from the console it looks like it's happy, like it was suffering too and then it was freed when the guy was too.
If you've ever played and put yourself through a mind torturing game like this and beat it, everyone apart of the moment (gamers) get the feeling of happiness and freedom lol I love the fact that it smiles because he was beat
from what i could read from the text spam, the console was fully sentient and hated it's own existence, so finally being defeated was both a loss and a win for it, since it could finally die
The hours that the creator will have spent listening to this song with his eyes closed, imagining little by little what the story would be like and then tracing that in countless hours, days, months of work to create an animated masterpiece of 8:12 minutes ... Incredible animation. Every time I look at it I find new details. Congratulations, and thank you for bringing this wonder to the internet.

Craziest part? The path she takes is the "bad path" by a look at the signs, and there's *zero* risk of death in taking the "good path". The only purpose of that nightmare gauntlet is to get the key. The manual tells her she has 7 minutes, 1 second to get back to it. She opens the lack at almost exactly 7:00.
Congrats to Leslie Wai for making it to 2 million views on the original track. It's the only reason this video exists at all. Sub to him or I will hunt you down one by one.
Hey, I just want to say I've been coming back to this video for years now. It's a favorite among favorites, a true work of art. Thanks for all you put into it.
sucks that there are no top comments reminding people that there's even more depth to this masterpiece than meets the eye because before youtube got rid of annotations this video was jam packed with hidden clues and secret annotation links that led to several secret alternate endings. unfortunately those annotations are gone now, but luckily the creator has uploaded all the endings from good ending to bad ending on his channel in 2020, so please remember to check it out because while the base project is already amazing, the amount of effort put in to make this an almost ARG like experience is incredible and immensely underappreciated
All these people commenting years later never realizing that this video once held an insane puzzle ARG inside of it using annotations that eventually led you to a bunch of different endings. When RUclips killed annotations they also killed this ARG. I suggest you do some searching around on youtube cause this video hides a LOT behind it's facade.
Wait, if she's in the game, does she also *feel* every death? I've watched this multiple times and I always thought the deaths & respawns worked kinda like dreaming i.e. without first-hand experience. If she does feel everything the video just got x1000 times darker and the girl more heroic.
I like to think that the game's core programming can never create a 'zero win' scenario, hence why the game never fills the screen with undodgable lasers. It must comply with the rules: 1. The player must always be given the choice to continue or leave with a 10 second time limit 2. The game may not create a situation where the player cannot win
@@Obsession.999 The game could make her lose, she did lose a lot. As for why she could beat the game backwards, i guess once the program started breaking down it also made things corrupt and disappear, which made the path easier (like how one crusher is half corrupted so it couldn't crush the boyfriend at 6:38 )
You forget, the game DID win... This was Ending 5. If you want to play the full game (done via annotations and secrets) and see all the endings including victory, I have a post for this video that links to where it should still be playable.
You know, almost once a year this video is recommended to me. This is probably 5th or 6th time I'm watching it. And every time I'm amazed. The raw emotion you can see. The amazing art. The secret endings which I will never forget. I can interpret this video in so many ways, each and every single one is valuable & valid. Even the actual game it self. It truly feels like a game. The slide animation, shell jumps, even death animation feel game like. They also truly repeat themselves perfectly, like game animation. I cannot imagine how much work must have been put into this video. I hope that in a year, RUclips will recommend me this video once again, just to amaze me once more. Guy Collins, thank you for this wonderful experience & your hard work.
Since RUclips is removing annotations on January 15th, soon these puzzles will no longer work. I just want to thank Guy Collins for his great work on this project and showing us how useful and amazing annotations could be before they were stripped. I want to thank him for his creativity in making a puzzle like this whereas most people misuse annotations. I will miss the chance to show people this little gem, but I'm glad I've had the chance to experience it. Thank you.
I kinda hope someone compiles all the annotation links that used to be there. It would be spoiling the puzzle, but that's better than letting most of it be lost to time...
Thanks man :] As I mentioned in the final secret ending (wait what) I was worried right from the start that annotations were going to be removed before I even finished the video, I'm so happy the puzzle lasted for so long. Now the challenge is to get to the end with no help from me at all. Eventually the guides will disappear from the internet, l did not prepare for this situation. Good luck :p
I just knew that when she was looking at the controls, ( 1:44 ) it said to unlock the jump pad at 7m 1s, when you go to that time ( 7:00 ) she put the key in at that time. i love the attention to detail!
@@vinalyyy / This video ends in 'False Ending 1'. See this is what pisses me off about youtube. You get people like Guy Collins making unbelievable animations like this which takes literally months of work to produce something genuinely original and artistic and it only gets two million views. Meanwhile people watching someone else's videos and occasionally saying 'god damn' or people flipping water bottles onto tables gets just as many if not significantly more attention than this. Real creators like Guy need so much more attention. People talking about making youtube better, well it's only going to get better when they start giving attention to the channels that actually deserve it.
The popularity of fluff content doesn't worry me so much, it's the freebooting of content that gives me concern. I put this up for everyone to watch for free as long as they came here to watch it, but facebook made it impossible to promote this as a youtube video, basically saying if I didn't upload it to fb video then someone else would and steal my views (which they did), and if I did upload it to fb vid it would probably be stolen by another page anyway. I'm with CGPGrey, I don't trust that facebook has the remotest interest in helping content creators. I've come to understand howerver that my survival doesn't hinge on the large crowds that come and go but on the people who have stuck with me for years, and if my upcoming crowdfunding effort goes well I should be able to survive with the help of my core supporters who keep telling me to find a way for them to give me money :] We'll see how that goes but first I need a new video to upload so the work continues...
Good on you mate. That's a genuinely admirable statement. I really hope things go well for you. You deserve it. You clearly have a hell of a lot of talent!
u need to sigh it somehow, for example a small logo in the corner or something. u could advertise ur channel in the end of the video but they can always cut it up so that wouldnt work. make an edit that they cant undo, im no expert so i dont know the best way
In the many deaths she had, one of them was the coconut death, she already knew about getting killed by a coconut. Thats why she stopped a little quicker
For all of you discovering this on 2024 or later, this video was a game on itself. Last decade it was possible to add links to the video in the form of annotations, so touching different parts of the video you had access to different possibilities, endings, easter eggs, a whale, and so on.
weirdly just got this recommended again today, funnily enough this was one of the videos that made me a vocal opponent to the removal of annotations - since they were used so effectively here for easter eggs. Seems like so long ago - still sad there are people who won't see just how deep this actually went.
@Fat Chocobo This video has multiple secret endings that were only accessible through clicking specific parts of the video, via invisible annotations - with the removal of annotations, these endings are only accessible through knowing the urls or seeking endings specifically. Playing SMW (or more precisely SMW mods - which what I think you'd want to do if you were looking into Kaizo) - would not do anything to explore these lost artifacts or exploring the video deeper in that respect.
Well annotations are like knives. Some people use knives to create delicious meals akin to this animation. Some people use knives to kill people like how so many youtube videos had annotations so large that on non-PC versions of RUclips, you couldn't physically leave the video on Fullscreen because people made annotations that covered the entire video. I am sad that they removed it but to be fair, some channels abused of annotations akin to mobile game ads with their x buttons

Pinglen To be fair, plenty of countries have familial affection that isn’t sexual regarding a kiss or something. However, yeah the way they behaved they’re a couple, either married or dating but judging how they live together in a house and are both adults I’m guessing married.
Anyone else notice the comical "death by coconut" in the death montage was followed up on with her stopping to avoid it when she reached the golden-lock-box with her husband in tow?
Its fascinating how after she reaches her partner the first time, the game almost seems to make the localles she had passed through harder- almost as if it didnt expect her to make it the first time, so it made sure getting back would be much harder Another interesting thing is that, while the places in the game all seem natural /apart from the final area and kaizo boss itself/ but all the enemies she faces seem to be mechanical. It's almost as though the game is trying to make itself seem like a naturally occurring paradox, only in the living beings and the core of the reality itself does it reveal its true Mechanical heart- no matter how hard it tries to mask itself: it is merely a machine.
Normal ending: beat the game, as normal. Good ending: beat the game, deathless. Long ending: in the credits, try to pause. Short ending: locate a secret break in geometry in the long ending and climb through it. Sleep ending: navigate through the maze hidden in the short ending. True ending: complete every other ending, and then get to the sleep ending in ultra mode deathless.
I literally cried watching this, is a literal roller coaster of emotions... there is no words from me to describe how detailed this animation is. Thank you for this animation.
I only just realized the character's lack of mouth and the text that appears after the continue screen is basically a strong homage to "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream". At first I thought the text was there merely to appear cool.

I am pretty sure the final boss fight where her guy is hooked on tubes, she did all of that on the first run, or atleast after the part where she was revived back.
Talk about honing her skills and reflexes to the point that she had beaten the final stage at first try with pure skills.
@@facua1551 Technically she didn't beat it on her first try. She died, but the BF glitched the game, so she respawned there.
The fact that when she lost all her lives and was asked if she still wanna continue and she's back at the start the gamemode was suddenly hardcore
you dont understand. this is a kaizo game. the gimmick of kaizo games other than insanity level difficulty is you always have 0 lives. every time you die you have to start over from the beginning. she was faced with the game over screen every time she died. its just that at the end it was showing how absolutely tired she was. that she just wanted to give up but persevered and committed to saving her boyfriend.
@@MasterOfTruck shes never played any games in the 90s games were much harder back then. She at least got move control book. Old games in the 90 just threw you right in with no explanation. like takeshi castle

This animation is a masterclass in story escalation.
Moments that bring more tears to my eyes:
Her grimace of pain/realisation at 2:00
The death routlette begins to *repeat* at 2:37, faster and faster
The secondary impact of the boss's laser, at 3:41
3:46 -> --4:12--, enough sai- WAIT A MINUTE IS THAT THE HATE MONOLOGUE?
4:59 -> 5:04, She loses him again, but flashes a *stone cold* glare at the wall of saws
And 5:20 absolutely breaks me.

Actually, it's kind of odd. The entire point of Kaizo is that the game doesn't want you to beat it. It's meant to be unfair but """possible"""

Valid interpretation right here :]

I like to think that the game's core programming can never create a 'zero win' scenario, hence why the game never fills the screen with undodgable lasers. It must comply with the rules:
1. The player must always be given the choice to continue or leave with a 10 second time limit
2. The game may not create a situation where the player cannot win
The game not being able to make her lose could also explain how she could beat it backwards

This video really has stood the test of time. After all these years, I still come to watch the video every now and then.
And let's not forget the momentum in the movement!

You clearly have a hell of a lot of talent!
u need to sigh it somehow, for example a small logo in the corner or something. u could advertise ur channel in the end of the video but they can always cut it up so that wouldnt work. make an edit that they cant undo, im no expert so i dont know the best way

weirdly just got this recommended again today, funnily enough this was one of the videos that made me a vocal opponent to the removal of annotations - since they were used so effectively here for easter eggs. Seems like so long ago - still sad there are people who won't see just how deep this actually went.
Ikr.
Oh fuck I forgot about the annotations
Well annotations are like knives. Some people use knives to create delicious meals akin to this animation. Some people use knives to kill people like how so many youtube videos had annotations so large that on non-PC versions of RUclips, you couldn't physically leave the video on Fullscreen because people made annotations that covered the entire video. I am sad that they removed it but to be fair, some channels abused of annotations akin to mobile game ads with their x buttons
Same
Still the hardest animation on youtube holy

Its fascinating how after she reaches her partner the first time, the game almost seems to make the localles she had passed through harder- almost as if it didnt expect her to make it the first time, so it made sure getting back would be much harder
Another interesting thing is that, while the places in the game all seem natural /apart from the final area and kaizo boss itself/ but all the enemies she faces seem to be mechanical. It's almost as though the game is trying to make itself seem like a naturally occurring paradox, only in the living beings and the core of the reality itself does it reveal its true Mechanical heart- no matter how hard it tries to mask itself: it is merely a machine.
5:20 is that one wasp i put in my microwave trying to live the heatwaves.
So you’re saying the good ending on the attempts she made to get the boy? Is a certain amount of tries or the very first try?
