Totaly, while I did not participate in the game at the time, I found the recreation link, it is awesome! That part where dark man hugs color man always scares me though...
Rewatching this when it became public, I noticed something I missed before: the game glitches out because they don't have the right key (they end up needing the black one and having to go get it), they're walking backwards through the worlds, and without stopping at the spring they'd keep going into a world that doesn't exist; the whole thing freezes before they can take the step that would actually cause the problem. Then creepy glowing eye man ends up in the Minus World anyway, keeps going, and eventually all bets are off as the game starts loading shit from random places in memory based on instructions that assumed sensible level structure. I'm not...really sure how accurate this is to what I wanted to point out, but. It seemed like a neat detail.
To narrow it down for people still coming through, if you hit the credits sequence that mainly consists of the word "dead" repeating over and over while Faith No More's "Surprise, You're Dead!" plays in the background, you've gone too far.
(I wrote this 3 years ago, so I'll clarify more here) So I know these videos are heavily inspired by different things in the mario Franchise, mainly the rom hacks of Kaizo and ACE and TAS, which this leads me to believe this was most like a wrong warp the BOY discovered by the corrupted credits sequence and did arbitrary code execution. At first the credits play normally up until the point where the ending was suppose to trigger and at first BOY is still in the system (by the boss battle from the main video) so BOY must've had a plan to get GIRL and themselves out. So the game glitches out because they don't have the correct key and they end up needing one and having to get it so BOY takes over by freezing the sequence and taking himself out of the equation, and tries to write some code in empty space (2:00) to store the code elsewhere in RAM to execute the ACE exploit later to get a new key. They're walking backwards through the worlds, and without stopping at the spring they'd keep going into the next world in the credits sequence. When the credits restart you notice it was the first world, heavily corrupted and it keeps going with all the worlds eventually placing GIRL in the sequence alone but then it loads a broken world at (3:56) and an underflow occurs, since she doesn't stop at the final world and the game keeps going with reading garbage data as world data. The game continues to read RAM and ROM data as the credits in the background causing broken worlds and tiles to appear during this sequence. This buffer underflow of the amount of data trying to be read as valid worlds causes to many sprites to load up at once and so the game hits a sprite limit and restarts due to the amount of locked springs on screen and with that it might have created an entry point to the ACE exploit due to the overflow of sprite data. So we got credits underflow and the sprite overflow clobbering the RAM of the game working together as an entry point for the ACE exploit that BOY created. Returning from this restart and trying to execute tons of garbage code from the credits underflow and sprite overflow, the game tries to place GIRL at the boss sequence of the BOY, the game detects the error and tries to restart her at the beginning of the game due to access violations in the ROM perhaps due to BOY's manipulation attempts at ACE. Due to the underflow/overflow the entire level map is completely trashed and now a corrupted level is loaded and it's returned to the gameplay loop. The BOY leads the GIRL through a series of corrupted tiles and paths to most likely land them at an entry point in the games ROM to execute arbitrary code and force a key to spawn in a location and resume the credits, but we need to return back in order to prevent the game from crashing entirely. This could be the reason why their coordinates are read at this point.(5:35) They lined up just right that the subroutine the game is going through ran through their positions as code and it jumps to another part of the ROM perhaps leading to a return instruction. Leading through the trippy colors and sounds, due to another error that tries to restart the game. This whole exploration stuff is similar to the Super Mario Land exploration glitch where you explore the memory out of bounds as level data to write a byte to a point of RAM that causes the credits sequence to trigger. (See Retro Game Mechanics Explained on the subject). The bit after is the game trying to execute the code and get back to a stable point by returning from subroutines and going through more hoops in the games ROM, the code lines up just right which leads to (6:18), the gameplay loop lands right in the middle of the broken credits sequence which is still loading more garbage data and worlds, but now the ACE exploit has triggered. The underflow/overflow and memory exploration was enough to write some code to make a valid level for GIRL to play in, and the game is returned to the credits sequence once execution returns from the restart earlier. The GIRL then goes through this level that was fabricated and finds a key, which then returns mostly everything to a stable point and the GIRL reunites with the BOY and the credits sequence resumes normally by landing in a same spot in the ROM so that it doesn't crash again, which is why the text on screen is a bunch of code, this is the code that became stable for the credits to continue. Just in the time for the backgrounds and worlds to line up again to the valid worlds. (8:20) The worlds and data are now in the normal range, but the underflow/overflow caused way too much corruption, the sound engine is completely trashed, and the rest of the credits sequence is safe from underflow due to having a valid key. Remember how I said the game is returning from subroutines to get back to the normal execution? The code that scrolls accross the screen is assembly code - typical of what old consoles used at the time and what is still used today. You notice the code blocks all end with C9 or a RET instruction, otherwise known as a RETURN instruction. Finally ending on a chunk of code that is possibly meant to represent the stable code it was suppose to get back into. However the damage was already done, by the time the reach their house with the credits mostly played out, the underflow trashed most of the data in the ending credits, which causes the final crash at the end.
What really gets me is the shadow boyfriend coming in unmoving. coming towards them slowly yet it happens quickly. Your mind has enough time to acknowledge it's existence. Enough time to piece together what's happening, but not enough time to truly react.Them being stuck there and forced to watch it unfold. The few seconds of it being in view is almost like an eternity.
"It's dangerous to go alone. Take this..." Between all of the freaking memes in the annotations in trying to get to the next secret ending, I just want to say that this is the most amazing animation ever. I too, was rickrolled by the red spring.

@@randomperson.9708 Well, you see, annotations were a popular way to link to other webpages, videos or timestamps. Since the annotations were pretty hard to spot when you're focused on the video's content, it was also used to HIDE videos. Unfortunately, youtube removed annotations back in 2019, and we now have to make do with end cards, which are nowhere near as hidden or awesome. Fortunately, there's a plugin for chrome that restores annotations. Unfortunately, annotations themselves are only available on pc.

Creepy considering this link caused my system to mess up. Literally. All the tabs and links started blacking out. There was flickering and black bars everywhere. That was after I had refreshed the page a couple times though, then it happened for all my tabs. Had to restart my browser.
+DWLooney1 No, am using official updates. I've never had anything like this happen until this video. Now it happens occasionally. I just have to restart the browser, but still. It really creeped me out when it first happened. There may be other issues here, so I'll look into in so more later.
Welp, got it yesterday. A little tip: Don't be looking for annotations that stand on the screen for longer than three seconds. Also, it's pretty well hidden, this is where getting to the next ending gets hard.
Holy shit, I'm so pissed that I've missed out on this, I really liked that first animation and didn't know that the rabbit hole goes even deeper. Bumped out that annotations are dead.
I still come back to this years later because the type of effect applied to the music is actually incredibly relaxing to me, like I'm asleep in the middle of the void. I wish I knew how you did it!
@@guyjcollins OMFG thanks for replying, I appreciate it so much! I've tried low bitrate in audacity, but the cutoff usually ends up too low and I don't get that sort of "crunching" quality you can hear a lot in, say, 4:40 in the right ear. Did you use something other than Audacity, or something else other than just lowering the project bitrate, if you remember? I have made efforts before to try and get this sort of sound, but it never sounds quite like the video, it's interesting...
I must say, I love all the little side-notes which were put in, frame-by-frame. For example, the hex code at 5:31 ! Thanks for producing a series which is both enjoyable to watch time and again, and to decipher all those tiny little bits.
This hits me in so many levels. I don't often like or favorite stuff, but this has such a unique essence. I feel like this wants to tell more than the codes it has hidden
I first saw the original Kaizo Trap probably the week it came out, I absolutely loved it. I felt the emotion, loved the animation, and I was crushing on a girl back then and just really almost cried at this video. I am 21 now, and I just realized there were secret endings and oh my god is everything great. You put SO much more work into this than I ever knew, and I'd like you to thank you for this amazing, one of a kind experience. Nothing, ever, could top this. Now if you'll excuse me, it's 4:19am right now, I need to go die in endless nightmares. God this second one was so scary to watch at this time.
oh man, i wasn't able to recognize the full artistry of this project when i first discovered when i was like 15, but i only just now noticed that you have airman ga taosenai playing muffled in the background towards the end which confirmed my theory rewatching this that the repeating 何回やっても at the start of this was a direct nod to airman ga taosenai. what a truly beautiful and incredible love letter to the kaizo genre and culture, the direct nods to TAS and everything. thank you for this masterpiece, really. i'm just happy i was able to catch this little easter egg even though i'm sure you jampacked way more than i could even begin to understand in the whole project, my god
Oh man, this one had like fifty million labels and all of them linked elsewhere. Your patience in making and linking them, as well as setting up all the codes is astonishing! You rock
I gotta say, I like this playlist. The theme is strong, and most of the selections are worth listening to in their entirety before continuing the hunt. Thanks for the unexpected fun, Guy! Great work as always!
+Petsinwinter Pretty sure this was a feature, not a bug. Like in the games, where when you die you have to go back to the beginning... here, when you pick a wrong link, you have to start the video all over again.
Make more like these. But don't make it as creepy as this cus im having trouble sleeping afterwards. First thing that I've seen that is scarier than herobrine
I Remember I loved this animation so much that I shared with everyone I knew. I got so into this (I even draw a fanarts) , that someone buy me the Kaizo Trap Download Pack (I was so poor to buy it myself) and was the best gift I've ever got 'cause I searched for every code, every secret and was so exited ... maybe I overreacting but little things like this give me life. Thanks you for make it public this one was my favorite ending.
I'm just trying to figure out what's going on here story wise. Is this like an alternate ending where they end up stuck in the glitchy programming forever?
It appears that if you install the browser addon Annotations Restored, the annotation maze on this video works again. Not sure if all the annotations are back, but it sure looks like how I remember it.
There's something about the low quality audio on 1:57 as if you're using some really old headphones or poorly treated headphones that is just really relaxing to me
japanese translations “I can do it many times” - 0:14 “You cant escape!” - 1:24 “All Dead “ - 6:13 To those whos gonna say “ WHAT ABOUT THE ENDING SCREEN? “ It seems like apple couldnt see them enough. so hey, dont blame me.
Well, I searched through the source code of the page and collected all the annotations. Then I made an HTML with all links to videos the annotations lead to. Then I just clicked them until I got the right one. Is that the right way to solve the puzzle? :)
Guy Collins Animation, if you're reading this: I've rewatched your videos and, well, some of them seem to be partnered with Mondo Media. Just a question, are you working at Mondo Media now? Because if yes, then that would explain why you aren't uploading animations any longer. If no, then I wish you a long and relaxing break. Take care!
i have no idea what the story is, what these endings are but i'm loving it regardless i really like this style of buggy-glitchy scary, and with the distorted music, it feels like something your younger self would be terrified of
Seriously. EVERY time I see this or anything related to it, there's something new. This time it's that in the scene where they meet up at around 5:38, their X coordinates are exactly two units apart. This tells you that the characters themselves are 2 units wide since they're as close together as possible. It even seems to line up about right with the top left corner being (0,0) if you assume that the character's position is measured as the bottom center of the sprite (as might be expected for a platforming game), although the imprecision inherent in animation vs. an actual pixel perfect game executing throws it off a little.
+Guy Collins Animation thanks man. i read some...might need more by the looks of it cause I really do suck at these search games and they quickly frustrate me but i'll try. cause your video series has been amazing! the idea and excecution is fantastic plus I really felt for this girl, she's incredible! i want to see the end just for the sake of the story and nothing more :P
+silvermangawolfygirl Some bad news - Much more frustrating things to come. This was designed to be a brutal puzzle, this is kinda just the beginning :] Good luck!
+David M. I'm kinda judging it as I go. I encourage people to share information about this puzzle, but at the same time, if it gets too obvious I may remove comments. I will send you a nice message apologizing if I remove your comment, though :]
Damn. This is some real nice work. So far I've only been finding dead ends and stuff. This has made me open up audacity, run some funny commands with ffmepg and apply some funny filters with avisynth. Maybe :soon: I will figure out wth is the deal with this one. PS: Awesome work here. I must ask how long approximately (in hours) did it take to complete this whole thing (all endings). Any estimates are nice ^^. Knowing how much work has gone into these makes you appreciate this even more.
2:42 Do you see that? It's a trap! Okay, this is absurd! This is not a game. This is not what a video game is about. A video game is about being able to... It's about being able to actually win! How am I supposed to get over that?
fun fact: the reason why the girl has no ponytail in some sprites is because in most games with hair physics the hair is a separate sprite, so thats why.
Is there a less annoying way to go through all the annotations? having to go back, reload the video, search where I left.. *sigh* At least the weird bros video was cool And pls tell me its not a box inside a box pls, is that even possible in youtube annotations?
Boy, You have hidden this one pretty well, I have continued a time or two, and I have been scouring it searching for the right link, but am not having any luck...though I am pretty sure I have clicked most of the links...
At 8:57 when the screen fades out for a frame you can see one of the walls dissapears and there is a back void with what appears to be some coins inside it.
I don't mean this in a bad way. So please don't take it like that. But this is highly unpleasant to watch. You captured the feeling of a descent into purgatory perfectly.

Fun fact: If you used Annotations Restored for RUclips, hope you enjoy the ride.
What annotations is it only for pc? Cuz I'm on tablet and I'm just here bored.

It took me so many years to find out that I was Rickrolled by a very long time ago film
Guy Collins Animation, if you're reading this:
I've rewatched your videos and, well, some of them seem to be partnered with Mondo Media.
Just a question, are you working at Mondo Media now? Because if yes, then that would explain why you aren't uploading animations any longer.
If no, then I wish you a long and relaxing break.
Take care!
i have no idea what the story is, what these endings are
but i'm loving it regardless
i really like this style of buggy-glitchy scary, and with the distorted music, it feels like something your younger self would be terrified of
Seriously. EVERY time I see this or anything related to it, there's something new. This time it's that in the scene where they meet up at around 5:38, their X coordinates are exactly two units apart. This tells you that the characters themselves are 2 units wide since they're as close together as possible.
It even seems to line up about right with the top left corner being (0,0) if you assume that the character's position is measured as the bottom center of the sprite (as might be expected for a platforming game), although the imprecision inherent in animation vs. an actual pixel perfect game executing throws it off a little.

fun fact: the reason why the girl has no ponytail in some sprites is because in most games with hair physics the hair is a separate sprite, so thats why.

Boy, You have hidden this one pretty well, I have continued a time or two, and I have been scouring it searching for the right link, but am not having any luck...though I am pretty sure I have clicked most of the links...
For some reason, I really appreciated Digital Love being in this ending as the girl navigated the glitched maze. It seems...appropriate.

I don't mean this in a bad way. So please don't take it like that. But this is highly unpleasant to watch. You captured the feeling of a descent into purgatory perfectly.
