    How is your mind flay putting out that much damage per second in pre-raid bis gear? Baseline, it only deals 142 damage per tick, and only gets 15% of your spell power per tick, and your initial cast with three stacks of shadoweaving was doing 497 damage per second. The only way that is achievable is with 1420 spell power. You only have approximately +355 shadow power from your pre-raid BiS gear. That means that, even with full stacks of Shadoweaving, you should only be doing 273 damage per tick with Mind Flay.
    You also only need 4/5 Improved Mind Blast, to get its cooldown to exactly 6 seconds (which is the time it takes to cast Mind Flay twice). Going 5/5 is a wasted talent point, as the cooldown on Mind Blast going down to 5.5 seconds causes it to "clip" your mind flay and be ready too soon.
    Your rotation is off on playing Shadow Priest. Your best damaging rotation is opening with SWP into a Mind Blast, then two Mind Flays, then Mind Blast, then two Mind Flays, then Mind Blast, two Mind Flays, then start over to repply SWP as needed. However, multiple times I saw you just chain casting Mind Flay without weaving Mind Blasts every 6 seconds. Why not? It's the most mana efficient, hardest hitting spell you have. The only time you should ever throttle your DPS like that is if you're having threat issues or if you need to be more mobile.
    I don't like how you crop the video so we can't see your mana or what debuffs are on the target. It feels disingenuous, especially given that your numbers are far too large for what your gear should be capable of putting out even in the best, most likely scenario (5/5 Shadoweaving, Curse of Shadows, Nightfall proc, elixir of shadow power, greater arcane elixir, flask of supreme power, etc..)
    As much as I want Shadow Priests to be valued in Classic (as I main one and have cleared all raids so far), I think this video is pretty misleading.

    Note shadow priest..ability to drain life and AOE constant heal party... combined with respectable DPS numbers well. Shadow priests in Vanilla got little respect 'cept from those who really paid attention to the whole picture. And of course there's the shadow damage debuff on the targeted mob which increases shadow damage from any source really. I recall many raid leaders which would scrub a run if a shadow priest wasn't in the party,, and nobody said shit about gear score.. if you were in blues you were generally good. and lets not forget PvP... if a shadow priest took you out you spent most of hour wandering about without a face because the shadow priest had melted your face. A sin with a melted face was a special mark of shame for sin generally powned casters without even trying hard (stun lock em up and go to town on em. frustrating when you were on the receiving end because there was damd little you could do about it.)

    • @markk7283

      Its because you have to add points into the shadow tree to progress into the deeper talents. Talent points in SWP are wasted since your DOT gets kicked off of a MOB halfway through killing it. The rotation is SWP - MB - MF - MF - MB. He has 1 wasted talent in mind blast because with 5/5 your second mind blast procs before your second MF ends. Therefore only 4/5 points are needed.

    For anyone wondering about Classic shadow priest, these numbers are not consistent with classic live. Im pretty close to your pre raid BiS I probably have more spell power due to Robe of Winter night. SW:P does not hit anywhere near as hard as your video, its ticking for 550, when on classic servers its much closer to 250 per tick. Same with the 2300 mind blast crit, not consistent with live.

      Yeah and not being able execute on a Warrior as well, and other talent builds that are much better when gear is accumulated like for example on a Hunter not going survival when you have over 500 or so Agility, for those 15% extra agility talents, adds considerable ranged attack power as well as crit.

  • @vegavega5344
    @vegavega5344 5 лет назад +30

    As a Shadow Priest raider in vanilla, you are much better off skipping Improved Mindblast and rather going for Mental Agility, especially if you are lacking in the gear department
    Your main goal, but also the pain breathing down your neck is mana management, Shadow Priests do quite good dps, I usually out dps'ed most of our Hunters during fights, but the thing you have to remember with Shadow Priest is that, even if you could go balls out, swinging your massive dps cock with hard hitting Mindblasts it WILL come back and bite you in the ass, and you will end up having to wand while keeping up rank 1 SW: Pain to maintain Shadow Weaving on the target.
    My point is, shorter cooldown on Mindblast isn't needed, it makes you spam the ability more than neccessary and you drain your mana too quickly going balls deep, Mental Agility early on is a much better choice due to it decreases the mana use of SW: Pain and Mindflay.
    Which is your two most used abilities to keep up and maintain Shadow Weaving while doing dps, the base cooldown on Mindblast is more than enough to fire a Mindblast between your Mind Flays. Also, why no Improved Power Word: Fortitude?
    That is mandatory for Priests, especially Shadow-- You don't want to make yourself more useless than you already are, keep in mind; A Shadow Priest isn't needed to progress in a raid, it isn't mandatory, it's more a luxery, especially for your Warlocks to get that extra damage boost, which is the main point of why you are going shadow.
    To be a damage boost battery for Warlocks, Fortitude is one of the strongest buffs in the game, it increases HP-- Why you would want to gimp yourself and miss out on that I don't understand.
    x) And sure, other Priests have it, but let me tell you.. Being the only Priest, or few Priests in raid with Imp Fortitude is going to piss you off after a while, it's not the extra consumable cost, but the fact that you alone have to buff the whole raid because the other Priests doesn't have the talent, making their Fortitude useless compared to having you buff the whole raid; Point of it all? Pick Improved Fortitude to be able to buff your raid/group with the top dog buff, other Priests are going to enjoy having you around much more then knowing you atleast contribute to the buffing aspect since you are already not doing any healing..
    I mean, you are litterally in the raid to buff others, not only Warlock damage, but also your other Priestly stuff, if you were there just for damage... Why wouldn't they choose a more reliable and ''better'' dps like a Rogue, Mage or Fury Warrior over your scrawny ass?

    I'm happy to see Spirest DPS actually wasn't that bad. I look forward to seeing your ret DPS video.
    1 thing i wanted to see if you had tried was to forgo the 3 points in shadow affinity (25% reduced shadow spell threat) and put that in Mental agility from the disc tree (-2% per point cost of instant cast spells). You're already getting 20% threat reduction in the disc tree, does Spriest really need 45% threat reduction? Does mental agility work on mind flay and shadow word pain?
    If it does, that could help with mana issues allowing more mind blasts, especially in early tiers. You could even take 2 points from improved mind blast and put those into mental agility until you get enough mana regen to use mind blasts more.

    • @FruitNut
      @FruitNut  5 лет назад

      I have read that even with both threat reduction talents that you can have threat issues but this can differ depending on your gear and raid group. Mental Agility only works on SWP and would save you 47 mana per cast which doesn't really turn out to be very much since you only cast is every 20 seconds or so. Improved Mindblast is good for parts of fights where you need more burst. Thanks for the comments!

      @@FruitNut Ah, I can never remember which spells the game considers "instant cast" since it's not always consistent. I was thinking mind flay counted as instant cast/channeled and might gain benefit.
      If that's not the case, then I can see not using mental agility at all.
      I've heard of some people having threat troubles too but it usually revolved around an early high crit from mind blast. Outside of threat reduction, everything else seems pretty much situational to put it in.

    I'm surprised to see no one critical of the spec you used. If you're only going to use MB every 15 seconds, there's absolutely no reason for you to waste 5 talent points in Improved MB. Read the tooltip. Also, since you're only casting MB relatively infrequently, there's no need for you to spend 8 total points in threat reduction talents. The most you need is 2/3 in Shadow Affinity, and 1/5 in Silent Resolve, leaving you 5 points to max out Mental Agility, which offers some serious help in reducing mana consumption.
    Then there's going 5/5 instead of 3/5 in Shadow Focus. There's an argument to be made for 5/5, but it's of negligible value, since 3/5 gets you to the hit cap. That's two more talent points. And why do you have 5/5 in Spirit tap instead of blackout?? The chances of you getting a killing blow on a mob in a raid is negligible, especially in your rotation.
    If you're going to dump 8 points into threat reduction, there's no reason you can't increase your MB rotation to once every 6 secs (in between two MFs), thus making 4/5 in Imp MB the absolute most you ever need to allocate to that talent. If you monitor your threat, and have a competent tank, you shouldn't need so much threat reduction in your talents. That will allow you to put points into Imp PW: Fort, which is far more valuable to a raid.
    Since this is already too long, I'll be brief on gear choices. There are several slots which need to be replaced with mp5 and spell dmg&healing pieces. Spirit is pointless since you're always casting inside the 5sr and you don't need it to boost healing. Get enough mp5 gear and put 5/5 in Mental agility, and you should see your mana problems almost go away. Get the raid leader to fill up your group with Warlocks, and not only will the locks love you, but the other healers will too.

Darkmoon Card Blue Dragon was really really good for mana problems, also maximizing any MP5 gear per tier was best, especially for Naxx 40 when fights are super long. Also classicdb.ch/?talent#bxxzsVZZxGxzcxot is a better PVE spec, you rarely have the mana to do Mindblast since it's less mana efficient then just mind flaying and SWP. If you were to go into Mind blast talent, you would go 3/5 since it gives you the perfect rotation of SWP, 2 Mindflay, then Mind blast.

    @myne5689 5 лет назад

    I will summarize spriest for you. It is amazing in pvp, in my opinion second strongest 1v1 class after SL warlock (hunter is op with a lot of room to kite). It can do decent dps, but goes oom very fast. SWP is actually the highest dps single dot in the game. They will never be as good as a warlock, or mage in PVE. It is best to have a priest heal and maintain shadowweaving. There is a decent spec for this, but it is very boring and hard to convince a priest to actually do it. So a lot of the time guilds either just don't bring a spriest, and bring a few more mages and go without shadowweaving for warlocks. Or, they bring an spriest and have a strong warlock core. If you plan to main Spriest, I would only recommend doing it if you love and mainly PVP/Rank. If you want to raid I would recommend joining a casual dkp guild so you can snatch strong pvp pieces. Raid life as a spriest is shitty and you won't even be able to do it without 16 debuff slots come btw (unless they have them in mc right away which I think they will).

  • @xzygy
    @xzygy 5 лет назад

    You can see at 3:22 where the mana bottoms out, and the damage starts tanking hard. Average fight length in MC with appropriate gear is pretty long as well, so the 1:40 before OOM means less as the fight stretches on. It sucks, but that's how it worked back then, and it's why Shadow simply isn't viable in progression content. People might still take you if you're a dwarf and their warrior can't stancedance fears or something, and you'll keep up for that 1:40 with the other casters, but when you run out of steam, they'll overtake, and the gap will widen from there.
    I remember trying to justify it to my guild back then, and got to play it on farm content, but as soon as my mana was gone, I started my slow, inevitable slide to dead last.

Second, in a full 40-man raid and only 16 debuff slots most guilds will have well researched and developed debuff priority lists. On bosses I was prohibited from using both SW:P and mindflay because they "knock-off" far more important debuffs. Basically my job was simply to keep 5 stacks of shadowweaving up at all times, this was accomplished by spamming 3/5 improved mindblast(downranked for full-fight duration mana sustain) off cool down. That was high level spriest raiding unless your guild doesn't care and let you go all out, and even then, those numbers looked high in comparison to what I saw. On the upside, due to not sharing a terrible many pieces(save a couple) with other classes, you get geared very quickly

    "2. Close to realistic gear sets for pre-raid and BWLl gear (no High-ranking PVP gear or expensive crafted gear)" Just no lmao.. The gear you have is pretty much ABSOLUTE BEST IN SLOT in these cases, you'd be insanely lucky if you're able to get the full list of gear that you're showing in this video before the release of the next tier of content on the list. Also, where is AQ(pre-naxx)? It's definetly the most interesting place for shadow priest gearing.
    By the way, your "Patchwerk" mob has absolutely zero resistances. Not even once do you roll a 25/50/75% Mind Blast on this target. The only resist you are getting is the 1% miss chance that you can't get rid off. I really hope your viewers aint as gullible as you might believe they are xd.

    they're pretty bad, but you DO want to have 1-2 priests with enough spell hit for Mind Control fights in Naxx
    if you're an ally guild that can't field a fire mage team, you could make do with some locks and 1 SP
    horde side? no way
    lots of fun in 1v1 pvp though

    Also you don't use mind blast often because it is not very mana efficient and it pulls a lot of treat.
    Also with a warlock curse of shadow it would do a lot more damage

      There's not even hc or myth or anything, it won't even get any harder than this.

      No proof for that argument whatsoever, classes have like 10 spells, but totally in depth.
      The game is slow af in classic, and the classes are so one-dimensional, i already yawn as i think about it.
      The paste of the game nowadays is a thousand times faster these days, and with all the spells it is thousand times more complicated.
      With the low haste back then, you could take a pissing-break between the gcds/spells.
      Well, and your last two sentences are just blind insults that don't even refer to that i'm totally right with what i said.
      Classic is a pruned, and slower game than it is today. It's not cooler in any way, everything just takes more time. And if you are down for doing what you do today anyways, but you need a couple hours more for it (not because it's harder, but just slower), then go for it. Have your fun.

    These numbers are really bad. It's not your fault. Warriors and mages can do 2k+ dps in bis gear. Even a nelf feral druid do more damage than this and you have the option to tank. Still your job is to buff locks that's it. Don't waste your time getting better dps gear focus on getting bigger mana pool and HIT (both will result better dps actually) and more survivabilty don't go for crit or spell damage. You will only anger players which is already an issue, because you are playing with a niece class.
