  • Presented by Mike McMaster, Programs Coordinator for the Wood County Museum. From the Zoom program on 10-5-2020.
Title: “What Happened in Wood County March 14,1858: Ellen White and the Great Controversy.”
Just north of Bowling Green, on State Route 25 north, sits a historical marker for the very first 7th Day Adventist Church in Ohio. This marker, however, only tells a portion of the interesting story of this church. In this program we will learn who Ellen White was, what she was doing in Lovett’s Grove in Wood County on the day March 14, 1858 and what was the great controversy.

You misstated the day for a year truth. It should have been stated that "a day in Bible prophecy stands for a literal year". And, where did you get your information about the Millerites sitting on their roofs in ascension white robes? I am an Adventist and have never heard that story, which is not true to my knowledge. I didn't find "The Great Controversy" to be challenging to read, but very interesting and eye-opening. I hope you will decide to read it.

As a Seventh-day Adventist, my stance on "defending" Sr. White against her enemies has changed. I have avidly studied the word of God since about 1974. There was a time l struggled with Mrs. White's racial views, but have since gotten a clearer understanding of her statements; statements made in tumultuous times. Comparing her writings with scripture and my own spiritual experiences has convinced me that her ministry was divinely genuine. Personal accounts of those who knew her, in or out of vision, were never conflicting. She was labeled as a caring, loving, and unassuming woman. She could be persuaded to change her mind on domestic issues, but, according to Alma McKibben, when it came to principle "you could no more move her than you could the Rock of Gibraltar".
Her many, many writings, her verbal description of her feelings on the Son of God, have established in my mind her deep "sincerity and truth" (Joshua 24:15/John 4:23). Working as a tourguide at her museum-home in Napa Valley, helped even more to endear Mrs. White to my mind and heart. She has greatly influenced my life and ministry reaching out to others. I do not care if others think l am deceived. In my opinion, when others seek to lash out with un-Christian ad hominem attacks on those who differ in Biblical views, it shows spiritual insecurity on their part.

@Dr T l understand your feeling the way you do, but here is where l have serious issues on how some well-meaning individuals present their points of view. I have made it a part of my religion to *NEVER* lash out at the convictions of others (Luke 9:49,50). All such actions and "strife" is "not from above, but is earthly, sensual devilish" (James 3:14,15). No one knows the experiences of others and whether or not they are being led or misled. "But let every man prove his *own* work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone and not in another" (Galatians 6:4).
As far as Mrs. White is concerned her ministry was placed on a "pedastal" by pharasaical Adventists with a cultist frame of mind. *None* of her enlightenment established any of the SDA doctrines. She stressed that to a General Conference president who sought her opinion on _RIGHTEOUSNESS BY FAITH_ (G. I. Butler--Ltr. 61a Oct. 1,1888). It was a joint effort of men and women like Joseph Bates (the first SDA vegetarian), James White, Rachel Oakes Preston, J.N. Loughborough, Uriah Smith, J.N. Andrews, etc. who studied into the wee hours of the morning, fasted, prayed, and labored endlessly to build upon "the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Chief cornerstone" (Ephesians 2:20). There are several quotes used by Mrs. White from other sources that were not divinely inspired. I have seen them. They were derived in an era when copyright laws were not as strict; and uneducated servants like Mrs. White (though well-read) leaned upon them to aid her in what she felt unable to articulate, like Paul, who quoted a Greek poet, (Acts 17:28), and who said, "l know whom l have believed" (2 Timothy 1:12). By God's grace I should let no man or woman dissuade me to believing otherwise.

I am an Adventist but I enjoy listening to non-Adventist discuss Adventist related topics as I do not like echo chambers.
I would like to bring out one point.
William Miller actually did set dates for the return of Christ. There were no Adventist at that time as the church had not yet been founded. However, those that would later become Adventist had accepted Miller’s message.
Miller never became an Adventist as he rejected the theology.
The Great Controversy is an amazing book.
Mrs.White “borrowed” from other sources to compose some of the history that is covered in the book. It was later revised in 1911 as some changes needed to be made and credit needed to be given the sources.
    It’s a great read for Adventist/ non-Adventist as well as Christians/non-Christians.

Some have accused the author of plagiarism , because of these, but instead all credits due were noted and accounted for. There are always those who hate Gods truth, and with limited understanding will attempt to undermine the authenticity of honest and truthful works , such as this. Yes Sir I read it from cover to cover. And Yes it was very moving & so was The Desire of Ages. However, this begs the question. Was Everything written in The Great Controversy Biblically accurate?? I say without a doubt NO. I would refer to The Chapter "The Holy of Holies." Here were have written when E. G. White 1) denies Christ's finished atonement at the Cross. 2) she projects a faulty timeline (i.e. day for a year = 1844) - Miller's mistake - she created her own explanation of doctrine - where she reduced Jesus Christ to being a Levitical High Priest. 3) she came up with this "Investigative Judgement" doctrine which has no Biblical evidence to support this. Shall I go on & on. Failed Prophecies, Failed Predictions, Shut Door doctrine, Christ would return in 1851, The Amalgamation, Prophetic Visions??? We must remember - she was a follower of William Miller and she also suffered a Head Injury which possibly could explain the visions as being mere delusions and hallucinations. We are warned in many places in The Holy Bible not to listen to False Prophets.

The date in 1844 would lead to the "great disappointment", because they had kept the general understanding that the earth was the sanctuary of Christ, and it was prophecy that William Miller diligently studied for a few years, that reviewed the 2300 year prophecy to 1844, and then at that time Christ would cleanse the sanctuary. The sanctuary though, was not the earth, but in Heaven, as further study would reveal, and that 1844 was the cleansing of the sanctuary in Heaven representing the beginning of the " investigative judgement" of Christ's people since Adam. The dead in Christ are judged first, the living. Many people broke away from the Advent movement back then, after the "great disappointment", but, as I said, further study was done and more light given from God through Sister White, especially about the seventh day Sabbath being the only true Sabbath of the going back to Genesis 2:1-3. Hence the name Seventh Day Adventist. It is a movement proclaiming the soon coming of Jesus, but after the judgement is finished and a world wide Sunday law is enforced by the Papacy. As an Adventist, I never could imagine how this ever would come to be, but now it is obvious it will come through the Climate Change new constitution put forth by Pope Francis. Ellen White taught that the door to heaven was shut on October 22, 1844.
You will not get in. Unless that doctrine was changed.
What are the three angels messages?
      MESSAGE ONE
Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7 And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
      MESSAGE TWO
8 Another angel, a second, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion[ of her sexual immorality.”
      MESSAGE THREE
9 And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”

Now what does the SDA church say are the three angels messages. By the way, is the date 1844 in the Bible somewhere?
      MESSAGE ONE
The first angel's message was proclaimed in 1843/1844 through those who were erroneously announcing the imminent return of Jesus. Ellen White, Seventh-day Adventism's prophet, wrote:
Prophecy was fulfilled in the first and second angels' messages. They were given at the right time and accomplished the work which God designed to accomplish by them.
      MESSAGE TWO
      2. The second angel's message is a call for Christians attending non-Adventist churches to leave those churches and join the one true remnant church--the Seventh-day Adventists. As Mrs. White noted above, SDAs believed this prophecy was fulfilled in 1844 when some Christians left their churches to unite with the Millerite movement:
As the churches refused to receive the first angel's message, they rejected the light from heaven and fell from the favor of God. They trusted to their own strength, and by opposing the first message placed themselves where they could not see the light of the second angel's message. But the beloved of God, who were oppressed, accepted the message, "Babylon is fallen," and left the churches.
When the churches spurned the counsel of God by rejecting the advent message, the Lord rejected them. The first angel was followed by a second, proclaiming, "Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." Revelation 14:8.
This message was understood by Adventists to be an announcement of the moral fall of the churches in consequence of their rejection of the first message. The proclamation, "Babylon is fallen," was given in the summer of 1844, and as the result, about fifty thousand withdrew from these churches.
God has rejected the church that I attend.
I will be destroyed. Scary, eh?
      THIRD MESSAGE
      3. The third angel's message is a warning against receiving the Mark of the Beast, which is said to be worship on Sunday. According to the SDA end-time scenario, the last great battle between good and evil will be fought over the day of worship.
Those who keep the Seventh-day Sabbath will receive the Seal of God, while those who keep Sunday receive the Mark of the Beast. According to SDA teachings, all the world will unite under the leadership of Satan to impose Sunday laws upon Seventh-day Adventists. As this frightening scenario unfolds, eventually Sunday laws will be passed requiring a death sentence for anyone who refuses to worship on Sunday. Ellen White explains:
As the Sabbath has become the special point of controversy throughout Christendom, and religious and secular authorities have combined to enforce the observance of the Sunday, the persistent refusal of a small minority to yield to the popular demand will make them objects of universal execration. ...a decree will finally be issued against those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, denouncing them as deserving of the severest punishment and giving the people liberty, after a certain time, to put them to death. Romanism in the Old World and apostate Protestantism in the New will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts.
After this death decree has been passed by the evil Catholics and wicked Protestants, Jesus will return to save the holy Seventh-day Adventists. Then, He will execute the judgment described in Revelation 14:10-11 by sending fire to destroy all Sunday-keeping Christians.
God is going to send fire to destroy everyone who worships on Sunday. Looks like I will be toast.

dear people, get your eyes off Ellen G White. She is dead and gone and knows her reward. She will rise from the dead like all the dead will on the Day of Ressurrection.
Get your eyes on Jesus Christ.
Jesus said - "Truly, truly I say to you that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and the ones hearing will live.... He is the Son of Man...And they will come out, the ones having done good unto a resurrection of Life, and the ones having practiced evil into a resurrection of Judgment." John 5:25-29
Jesus said - "Follow Me". Matthew 9:9.
The Holy Spirit says - "Looking to the Author and Finisher of our faith, Jesus, who for the joy set before Him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat dowwn on the right of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:2
EGW was VERY wrong about the prophecy of 1944. She spoke invoking the name of God. This prophecy was false. Moses says how to tell a false prophet(ess). "When a prophet(ess) speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing DOES NOT happen or come about, THAT is the thing which the Lord HAS NOT spoken; that prophet(ess) has spoken proudly; you SHALL NOT BE AFRAID of them." Deuteronomy 18:22.
Ellen G White by Moses standard given by God, was a false prophetess. Do NOT listen to her. She lied in the name of the Lord. Liars do not enter into the eternal city - Revelation 22.
If you insist on whitewashing Mrs White, you are promoting the lies she told in the name of the Lord; repent or you will receive the Judgment God has already declared.
God is merciful and full of tender compassions and ready to forgive.... but we must repent and turn from our sins. God has already laid down His rules for Judging everyone of us.
Don't be proud like Mrs White was.
Read the Bible WITHOUT Mrs White's books.
Ask God the Father to show you what His Book is saying. Father God is well able to open your eyes. He doesn't need Mrs White's help. And neither do you.
    Don't be deceived.
Look to Jesus alone and the Holy SPirit will lead you adn guide you into ALL truth just like Jesus promised.
Look to Mrs White and you will be disappointed at the end of life's journey.

By the way, the KJV translation is not completely accurate. I’m not sure if you are an only KJV type of Bible reader, but I’ve been studying textual criticism and can point out a couple different examples. KJV was the first Bible translation that I read when I became a Christian. I still love it for many reasons, but I don’t think it’s the only translation Christians have to read. That being said, I’m not claiming ALL translations are to be accepted blindly if you know what I mean. I’m curious to hear your thoughts. 😊
