Making Mercury Fulminate

  • In this video, I explain the process of making mercury fulminate and the dangers associated with it. I didn't turn it into one large crystal like Walt did in Breaking Bad; that requires a level of chemistry tweaking that is beyond me.
    Warning:
    Nitric acid is corrosive, mercury is toxic, and ethanol is flammable. These chemicals and their reaction products are dangerous. Do NoT tRy aT HoME

    Another reason they stopped using fulminate of mercury in cartridge primers is due to it being corrosive/damaging to barrels if not cleaned really well after each shot (edit: should have said "Shoot"). I really enjoyed this, I hope the algorithm blesses you.
    My number one tip for easy video improvement would be enhancing the colour levels to make it pop. You've got some beautiful footage, but because you're leaving it stock everything feels kind of flat. I'm presuming you're editing in Premiere but if not just google how to do this for your relevant program.
    Effects -> Lumetri Color -> Drag on to your video clips -> From there you'll want to head to your clip settings and look for the Lumetri Colour -> Basic Correction options.
    A good kicking off point would be to increase the temperature and saturation until just before you start looking spray tanned/deep fried. Adjust the shadows and blacks so that areas that represent the darkest parts of your frame look true black rather than a washed out grey. Then mess with the whites and highlights until everything looks bright and clear and crisp. A really good tip for colour balancing in general is to find a white point (eyes, teeth, shirt etc), something that you know is white essentially, and keep referring back to it to make sure it is true white. If it starts to have colours bleed into it then dial back the temp/saturation until you find a healthy balance. At that point (and some people may prefer to do this first) mess with the exposure. You do not want this to look like an emo myspace picture if it washes out a single bit of detail then you've gone too far. BUT you do want it to be bright, to be attention grabbing, so do crank it up at least a bit.
    By this point it's probably going to be pretty difficult to remember what it looked like normally and most people will start worrying they've made it worse. If you look back on the panel with all your clip settings and effects, right next to where it says 'Lumetri Color' you'll see a little 'FX' symbol. You can toggle that on/off to see what the clip looks like with and without the settings. The best thing you can do is get it wrong a bunch of times, after a while you'll start to just understand how the different parameters interact.
    And please don't think this is me suggesting the colours in your video look bad, I honestly think this is a great production. I just respect the grind and hopefully this will save you some time on your way.

    • @SomethingAbtScience
      @SomethingAbtScience  Год назад +4

      Wow, great advice! I never even thought to mess with color enhancing. I'm using Lightworks, but it should be capable of everything you mentioned here.
      Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of editing another video and made lots of cuts, so there are so many clips I'd have to drag it onto, but there may be ways around that.
      I'll need to mess around with it a bit.
      I appreciate the helpful tips though and I'll definitely implement that into future videos.

    • @Novum_YT
      @Novum_YT Год назад +1

      @@SomethingAbtScience Honestly it'll add so much production value on, most people think they need to keep buying more expensive cameras but there's hundreds of dollars of extra production value just in editing your colours.
      An extra tip: If you've already cut up a bunch of clips and want to apply something to them all after the fact, just select them all and then put them into a 'nest' (again that's adobe slang other softwares may vary) and then just apply whatever adjustment you want to make to the 'nest' so it effects all the sub-clips youve just added. A 'nest' is essentially a way of grouping clips into their own separated sequence!
      Good luck to you dude!

One afternoon, he taught me how to make this stuff, and lead azide as well. So when I saw the Breaking Bad episode, I was like, "What the fffff is that supposed to be? WTF is with that insane explosion from that mystery obviously-not-mercury-fulminate crystal?? HOW DID HE BLOW OUT ALL THE WINDOWS BY EXPLODING IT AT HIS FEET AND HE'S COMPLETELY FINE?!!1!"
    Now I'm thinking how funny it would have been if he'd used the real thing, done a dramatic batman throw at his feet and got just a very loud bang.🤣🤣

    take care detonating that stuff bro, you handled it with bare hands.. although elemental mercury isnt very toxic you can never be sure of unwanted side products

    My friend blew up his backyard making silver fulminate. He went on to become a cop and served in the bomb squad. No joke
    No RUclips or internet in those days. He downloaded a copy f the anarchists cookbook over a 1200 baud modem from the compuserve bbs. Those were the days 😂

    Chemistry made fun through videos like this is a great way to get people excited about science! I have been into pyrotechnics for around thirty years so am drawn to energetic substances (NOT METH). I don't have the courage to make anything more than what goes into fireworks and model rocketry but really like watching! Great video, got a new sub!
