    I don't know if you've covered it already, but The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments was a book I had as a young child. It's now available on the web in PDF, and "IRL"... if you can find a copy. It's a child's chemistry book, but old enough that it makes modern grownups cower in fear of the alchemy within. Definitely worth a video or two.

      WELL before he was born. They mostly stopped using it in the 1930s. Assuming you're not over 80 years old, what you were smelling was probably perchloroethylene. I worked with some of the same stuff too, like you said I had to wear a hazmat suit and he is there with a fucking tank top, he isn’t even wearing a long sleeve. I m deeply worried that someday he, someone near him or someone else taking him as a role model will harm him loser or other around him. And if he isn’t dying from it now he will someday from the consequences what’s really sad. It’s important to motivate young people but not like this. I highly doubt/can’t believe/ imagine he is a trained experienced professional with his lack of safety measures, like lab coat, fume hood, real equipment and furniture. And with his mistreating of safety rules like doesn’t tf taste the stuff you made, or release toxic smoke into the environment he is really a danger and it’s no wonder why he got a visit from the FBI, but they should’ve done something to stop this madness before something will happen

    About that mercuric nitrate ointment, I know what it was used for. My dad used to talk about an old country doctor in eastern Douglas County, MO, (probably back in the 1930s or earlier) who would make an ointment out of what he called “aqua fortis and quicksilver.” If I remember correctly, he used it as a treatment for what was commonly called “the itch” (scabies).

As a result mercury and arsenic were common in treating various kinds of infestations-- including the scabies mite. Mercury salts were also applied topically to treat syphilis, though the effect was questionable since the disease wasn‘t just skin deep, and the mercury probably added to the neurotoxicity.
      Then again, the alternatives for treating syphillis were either injecting organic arsenic compounds, or deliberately getting infected with malaria so that the resulting high fever would combat both pathogens.

    • @stgigamovement
      @stgigamovement Год назад +1

      The high amount of lethal and/or carcinogenic cold remedies in the book probably did poison people. In part 3 of the series, apparently the books authors had the silly idea to use a strong Lewis acid with a potent oxidizer in an organic solvent, all quite toxic, as a cold remedy. When the Lewis acid involved was not diluted, the addition of the organic solvent to the two other ingredients instantly proved to be hypergolic, resulting in the beaker's contents spontaneously igniting and vigorously so. When the Lewis acid was diluted, and a piece of aluminum foil was dropped in the mixture, the mixture proved to be highly corrosive, oh and a fire hazard. And this was touted 90 years ago as a cold remedy, despite it being highly toxic and reactive. Also, the book featured other cold remedies containing massive amounts of carcinogens. One had a mix of chloroform, formaldehyde, and ether, plus isopropanol. Chloroform and formaldehyde are carcinogenic, ether will put one to sleep, and isopropanol is not something you want in your body. It's toxic. Let's just say that any physicians who treated patients with these carcinogenic and reactive remedies probably ended up breaking their Hippocratic Oaths unknowingly. Assuming that the preparation of these supposed remedies didn't sicken them, or worse. Also, the recipe that fills holes at the cost of Hydrogen Sulfide production probably poisoned some repair technician 90 years ago fixing metal. Or, their clients. Also, the toxic methods for getting rid of pests in this book probably poisoned homeowners. Given the sheer poison hazard of many of these recipes, it's honestly more than likely that someone followed a dangerous recipe and it didn't go well for them, ending in them getting poisoned.
