I've never understand why people from US and Canada believe spanish traded with slaves. Spain had a very different aproach to colonies than other colonial powers. They didn't enslave local population, they formed families with them. If you look to the racial distribution in former spanish colonies you will find very noticeable differences with other colonial powers former colonies. In former british or french colonies you will find that still today there are very distinct groups of white european population and native population. In former spanish colonies nearly everybody has both european and native ancestors.
All native people living in spanish controlled territories were declared spanish citizens with the same rights as the ones born in Spain as soon as 1542 and in that moment all kinds of slavery were abolished in spanish territories. Athough it's true spanish ports were used to trade with slaves those slaves were not traded by spanish people and spanish territories were not the destination of those slaves.

.... As far as Canada is concerned, the first West European sailors/explorers having named and cartographed several places along its West coast, were Spaniards or sailors under Spanish flag..., Vancouver was named Bodega before, and peninsula VALDEZ, among others, was not given by any Russian, British, French ..... explorers.
Also, one of the theorys why Canada was given that name, is because the explorers sent by our crown, trying to find a pass to the Pacific Ocean through the North, like they did through the South (Magallanes straight) is because they never found it an reported/market on their maps ACÁ NADA (Nothing over here, in Spanish).

27:24 we were less than other country's in slave trade mainly because it was banned by the queen Isabel de Castilla the first person to banned slavery, it's true that it was difficult and even though there was slavery because is difficult to control that, it's true the slavery rate in that time was less than others countries and we have to take in account that during those times Spain was a powerhouse with the largest empire so it's impressive that such empire had less slavery trades than other countries and that's thanks to the queen.

  • @begui2613
    @begui2613 11 месяцев назад +36

27:25 No, no spanish slave trade, that didn't happen. Actually, during that period Francisco de Vitoria (considered one of the fathers of Human Rights) with other jurists and philosophers part of the School of Salamanca, developed theories and principles that are now the base of what we understand as basic human rights and the dignity of humans.
From a legal standpoint, while other countries treated african people as 'things' or 'animals', which allowed slavery to proliferate; the Catholic Monarchs adopted the position of the School of Salamanca and declared very early on that native americans were humans and as such deserved a basic recognition of rights, which meant that slavery was prohibited.

There are cities in Alaska with Spanish/Hispanic names.
There (also) is even a theory/legend in which they say that a Spanish explorer (Esteban Gómez y Vázquez de Ayllón) did not go beyond the Chesapeake Bay and the mouth of the Hudson, they say that he wrote on his maps “acá nada” and that is where the name arose.
Although it is one of several theories, and the apparently least reliable but at least curious.

I'm from Argentina but I feel confident enough to add to the things said in the video.
18:21 The breakfast thing is real, even in LATAM. Maybe not always churros and chocolate, since it's kind of a heavy thing to eat especially first thing in the morning, but it's usually sweet. Growing up I always drank chocolate milk with usually some kind of cookie as my breakfast.
32:00 Siesta has nothing to do with being lazy. At least in Argentina, it's sacred. With a few exceptions, there is a period of around 3-4 hours in which most shops are closed so people can have a siesta, a nap. It's indispensable to our way of life, and to have a good balance of work and rest.

One of the main problems of tourism in Barcelona is that we see people going crazy doing stuff that they probably wouldn't do back in their homes. Like if our cities were their playgrounds. And also there is the problem of gentrification. I live in a neibourhood near the city center of Barcelona and it's crazy how it changed: It's filled with tourists that decided to stay and that only speak english or their native languages and really don't care too much about learning the local languages. It is getting more expensive. "Traditional" shops close and then new ones open (and maybe last only for a few months). The city is mainly "sold" to turists and so it gets less charming and authentic, etc, etc, etc.
Nevertheless, we appreciate nice, respectful, mindful and curious turists and/or travelers and enjoy sharing our places and our stuff with them.

So an agreement was reached with the mediation of the Pope in the so-called Treaty of Tordesillas in which a dividing line was drawn in which what was on one side was Spanish and the other side was Portuguese.

There is no 'tourist go home' situation. But maybe there is something like that in some neighborhoods in Barcelona, where investment funds buy flats to rent to tourists and make life miserable for regular residents. You know, noise and parties at 5 in the morning when the neighbors want to sleep before going to work the next day. And neighbors who live in rented apartments find their rent multiplied by two or three. The Barcelona city council is trying to limit the number of tourist flats; excessive proliferation of tourist flats make makes the neighborhoods unpleasant for tourists as well.
Out of Barcelona, nothing like that.
Oh wait, there are also some cities on the Catalan coast (Salou, Lloret de Mar), Majorca (Magaluf), Ibiza (Sant Antoni de Portmany) and Valencia (Gandia) with problems due to 'drunken tourism'. 🤪

27:29 Spanish slavery? The slave traders and sellers were from all the great European countries and empires: English, French, Dutch... even the independent Americans were slave traders and slavers. So much bad fame that they have been divulging and disseminating in an interested way, that it has remained as true, but we were neither the only nor the greatest... many of those who spread that "black legend" were even worse in many aspects than the Spaniards... Same consideration than the “Spanish inquisition”. The inquisition was an entity of the Catholic Church, not only Spanish. And it is even documented, because the church at that time, believing it had God and the truth on its side, documented everything: the English (at that time Catholicisms too, since Henry VIII had not arrived to create Anglicanism), the French, etc. His “factions” of the inquisition killed many more people than the Spanish. But only the latter is remembered as popular culture... curious 🤔

Because the religious heritage goes far beyond the concept of belief in the supernatural. Religious heritage entails a set of values and customs that are intricate in the cultural heritage of societies. So a person can be an atheist and, on the other hand, value moral and cultural aspects of religion. For example, in countries with a Catholic cultural base, it is assumed that all human beings are equal before God. So societies tend to have more equal treatment between social classes. By that same principle, the concept of racism is abhorrent. In general, Catholic societies have had fewer problems mixing with other races than other societies with a Calvinist or Lutheran moral base. And it adds and continues.@@francoisdaureville323

Mainly Spaniards (I'm going to talk about my perspective, in Canary Islands) are angry with the management of the goverment, not with the tourist directly.
Because of the increase of Vacacional Apartments, the living cost in touristic places are out of the roof, making people who works at hospitality having to move away from their work places. Rents can get up so high that it takes more than the 90% of the salary. I don't really like that we have that much tourism, but mostly because the tourists (mostly the British ones, sorry) are just unhinged. In Benidorm they bath in public fountains, or go naked in public, or they just litter the city. My city is also considered one of the ones with more tourism, and it's so dirty during the high season. Also, you cannot go anymore to the beaches close to the city because they're tourist territory, unless you're there since 6am. You go to a beach far from the city or you don't go anywhere, because there's no space to do anything in there.
Also, if you want a paella with seafood, eat "arroz a Banda", it's typical from the south of the Comunidad Valenciana, it's pretty similar to a paella and it's also cooked in the same pot, but because it's a coastal dish, it's made with seafood.

I can tell you, the reason for the bubble was not that, I guess it was just a funny scape joke
It can be summarized in real estate bubble + government debt + poor labor regulation and low added productive value economy overall (systematic or endemic). Source: I’m Spaniard myself, from Cádiz, Andalusia, the zone that was in fact hit the worst. Btw although there are good sides overall, we’ve got the best beaches along with the Costa Brava in Cataluña and Islas Cíes in Galicia. Take a look at Bolonia beach for example! And of course the best, most hospitable people out there. Not kidding, they’re a bit more serious in the North. It’s also overall more traditional and cheaper here (due to us being basically a bit poorer). You can eat very well at any place though, although if you go to Barcelona of course avoid touristic places. Ask for local tabernas or mesones with good reputation, we have a cuisine to be proud of. Tripadvisor or Google Reviews can probably help you in that
Good, traiditonal plates are of course paella (typical Valencia), fabada or cachopo (typical Asturias), cocido (typical Madrid), pulpo a la gallega (typical Galicia), pescaito frito (basically from my land, Cádiz), fresh salmorejo and gazpacho (the first one being more solid, to eat with a spoon, and the later a beverage), croquetas and tortilla, and of course jamón ibérico. These are just some examples. For breakfast a toast with oil and tomato, or sobrasada is typical. Also churros, oftenly taken with chocolat. It’s just like some kind of fried donuts. Ensaimadas, sobaos… you can’t help getting broke and gaining weight here for sure dude hehe
    Great video btw 👍

There are different kind of tourism in Spain. There are a lot of digital nomads that LOVE the spanish lifestyle of Sun beach siesta and relax. There are other tourists that go to party. Especially Ibiza and to la costa del sol.
There are 2 kind of history-lovers tourist: one go to Madrid because its the capital of the spaniscsphere and the others are more architectonical-lovers because they love the arquitecture of Barcelona (actually Barcelona is the capital of architecture)
Religious tourist in the north of Spain because of the camino de Santiago.
And a lot of more profiles.
In the end Spain IS awsome for everybody, just because they way you can live here. Tapas, terraces, Sun, funny and nice people, mediterranean diet, great weather, surrounded by culture and in an international place.
Yeah, Spain is the european california but with culture

Im spanish, first time i hear rio Tejo...i know Tajo, but google calls it Tejo. And there are so many wrong things in this video that i just cant...so just one reflexion on how this video starts. 2 guys from one corner of a country, one of whos corner reivindicates that are so special and genetically different that they should have their own country (there would only be 1 or 3 countries in europe in this terms), making sure that u associate the name of other corner with dogs...now imagine what we have in Spain...spanish history is too rich and its been lied too much about.
1984 was written by George Orwell after spending some time in Spain (i dont say it was inspired in Spain, but do say that many writters dreeses in fiction their beleaves, so i like to think he wrotte about how he was being lied...how im being lied, how wrong is this video to understand Spain)...nice time to my neighbors i was lied too when i was young, things are much more "rocambolescas".

(Sorry for the grammar)

Actually, Spain started to colonised territories in America, but then those territories were part of Spain, like ultramarine territories. Actually, Spain had viceroyalties in America: Viceroyalty of New Spain, Viceroyalty of Grenada, Viceroyalty of Peru, and Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata, divided in General Captaincies. So, talking about colonial Latin America is a huge mistake, and American universities have these awkward subject names. Absurd!

At least on Canary island people are exhausted of not having the option to build a house because everything it's rural soil (you can't build a house on rural soil legally) but at the same time the politicians just give green card to any hotel company that want to build one (search: "playa blanca macro hotel" and "hotel de Puerto del Carmen se adueña de la playa")
They just change the rural soil to urban soil and magic now it's legal to build a mega hotel.
Pd: On Spain beaches are of/for public domain/use so no one can buy them but a hotel just get a part of a beach for itself thanks to the mayor of the island (Lanzarote). That's what make us angry the politicians and it's corruption.

The Spain dialect is weird compared to the rest of the Spanish speaking countries since it is a minority. aroun 50M Spaniards (vs 450M non Spaniards), from whom around 70% make the distiction of s and z/-ce/-ci. It may be weird in numbers, but take in mind the diference would be the same as pronouncing "think" as "sink". Would sound weird in English to not do the distinction

In many spanish cities people have to move from their house because it becomes expensive. That’s because companies rent appartments that once were from locals for generations to tourists. They make the prices higher on prupose so people can’t live there anymore. We can’t live in our cities, let alone keep our traditions. Tourists have a generalized idea of what spanish culture means, and you can find a lot of merch in Barcelona that doesn’t represent our culture at all. A lot of tourists travel here for partying, which isn’t a bad thing. What happens a lot is that they don’t respect the locals cotidian life: they are loud, drunk, unrespectful, and they throw garbage everywhere. A “popular” thing that they do is “balconing”: they jump from a balcony to the pool. That has caused a lot of accidents that costed their lives and the “trauma” of the unprepared people that have to clean that (most of the times the cleaning is done with unprepared people because it’s cheaper).
