I am not Spanish but one thing that I always found fascinating about Spain is that it is a country with a relatively small population and yet its influence is so great that today Spanish has the 2nd largest number of native speakers in the world. That's awesome to me.
I use to spend my vacation in Catalunya. I speak Spanish but no Catalan. I always wonder that there are spoken several languages in Spain but that Spanish is spoken in so many countries all over the world.
I'm not from Spain but have been living here for four years, and I have to say I'm impressed with the accuracy of this video! And also your pronunciation is pretty spot-on for someone who doesn't speak the language. The interesting thing I have noticed about this country that you briefly mentioned, is how it seems most people have a stronger cultural identity with their specific region than with the country as a whole. And I'm not just speaking about the Catalans and Basques, but just about anywhere you go.
Well, you'd pretty well know that now patriotism (if you wanna call it like that) or any kind of love for the country in general is really politicised. That's quite annoying for some of us, and a pity with such a nice country we have. I really hope politics won't end up seriously damaging our integrity!
Paul, fantastic video as always. I'm American, but I have visited Spain countless times and know the country extremely well. At 3:05, it's worth mentioning that the Meseta Central has not only a more continental climate than the coasts, but also drier, and due not only to its distance from the coastlines, but also to its being in the rain shadow of the mountains on the north and west coasts. The contrast between "Green Spain" of the north coast and the semi-arid interior, as exemplified by the 1.5-hour drive from Oviedo to Leon, could not be more stark. At 4:07, just to be clear, "Al-Andalus" (the areas under Muslim control) once included far more of the peninsula than modern-day Andalucia, although that part was under Muslim control for the longest (more than 750 years continuously). The name "Al-Andalus" itself actually references the Visigothic Vandal tribe (yes, from which we get the word "vandal"), which inhabited southern Spain and north Africa before the Muslim conquest.
I'm from Spain, and I would like to foreign people to know more about Valencia's culture, history and language, because I'm form Valencia, and I think it's a great city with a lot of culture and history. :)
Best food I've ever had in Spain so far was in Valencia, and I've also been to Madrid (and Toledo), Barcelona and Ibiza. I loved the look of the city too, more than those other two large ones, on the whole.
Terrific country. I spent two summers there and have visited several times more, and have barely scratched the surface. Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Granada are must-see destinations. I spent a couple of hours just chillin' in the rose garden of the Alhambra.
I am from Argentina, and I love both countries, and consider myself their son. In addition to being the grandson of a Portuguese, much of our culture and music comes from the Portuguese in Brazil, the Gaucho culture has Luso - Spanish roots born on the borders between the two kingdoms.

As a Spaniard, I would like to emphasize that what truly enriches our country is its diversity. Just like a garden becomes more beautiful with a variety of colorful flowers, Spain thrives in its unity through diversity.
Excellent summary, Paul. I think you made a good summary of Spain and its most distinctive nationalities in a short vídeo. As a Spaniard, I would like to remember others that the present country of Spain is a rump of what was one of the most complex mulitnational empires that Europe has ever seen.
I wish the world stop associating us with bullfights. A lot of people in Spain are against that, considering it savage. It's rare nowadays to find somebody who likes going to bullfights, and our country has much more to offer, like fallas from Valencia, Pilar from Zaragoza, carnivals from Tenerife and Cádiz, lovers from Teruel....Every region has their own typical music, dance and food. Paella and flamenco are only typical from two different regions. We eat paella in the whole country, but if you find flamenco in Madrid or Barcelona, it's just a show for tourists.
In general you are correct but Madrid still has a strong passion for bullfighting. Even the meat is consumed and sold to butcher shops and the animals aren’t wasted. When Spain is only likened as being a bullfighting and flamenco nation it limits the nation.
Me encanta España. Voy allí casi cada año. Visito España porque tengo amigos (españoles) allí y por las razones que dijiste. Pero mucha gente va a España por el turismo low cost y no sabe nada de la arquitectura, la historia, la lengua, y tal.
As a Spanish citizen that I am, I would like to point out that Spain welcomes citizens from all over the world to visit the country and get to know its strong cultural heritage, which is mostly manifested through its architecture and gastronomy as well. Regarding the latter, you should know that we produce the best olive oil on Earth, and our gastronomy is positioned in the third place from the 50 countries with the best food in the world.
I'm not sure about that story regarding Madrid being chosen as the capital because of its hunting, never heard about it, and Felipe II, the king that established Madrid as capital, was not an avid hunter AFAIK. The motivation was mostly strategic (the city is well within Spain's territory, thus far away from the borders and the coast, so enemy armies would have a hard time trying to get there during wars) and political (because at the time Madrid was a 2nd tier city, it lacked strong entrenched local powers, like the church or the local nobility, so the crown could be the undisputed master of the city, something that was not the case in the traditional itinerant capitals of the time like Toledo or Valladolid).
I would love to go visit Spain with my fiancee, especially Barcelona. I happen to have some Spanish ancestry and semi-fluent in Spanish. I love the easy going laid-back culture there.
Your pronunciation is pretty spot on and the video is very good. Only two things: 1-Galician is related to Portuguese because they share the same origin, the Galician-Portuguese language from the Middle Ages, so Galician is obviously closer to Portuguese than to Spanish 2-Spain's most important economic sector is tourism by far, so I wouldn’t say that finances and manufacturing compose an important portion of its economy because tourism does really represent a much bigger portion than the other two do.
Manufacturing is a Big part of Spain's economy....vehicles of all sorts ....shipbuilding....chemicals ...machinetools etc.....Tourism represents a 15th, of it's GDP
@Daniel Orozco I'll probably do it someday, because I intend to cover all countries. But requests won't determine the order. I already have an order and schedule for the next few years.
8:40 I thought Spain attracts tourists because it has sunny beaches and many vacation resorts. I have to say that the things I remember from my visit to Spain was the good weather, beaches, Sagrada Familia and Gibraltar (which isn't even technically in Spain lol).
I love the cultures and languages of Spain Tho I'm surprised it's currently the 2nd most visited country I mean, it's the one I personally want to visit most tho. So maybe I shouldn't be surprised
Enjoyed a lot the video, and even had a chuckle at that joke. Speaking about Barcelona, they have a very ingenious garbage collecting system, with a network of tunnels and vacuum pumps to move trash in the downtown without having to rely on garbage trucks, since when they hosted the Olympic Games.
Fantastic Video. Once most of south America and Caribbean islands and pars of north America and Africa were Spain's territory, it pretty much lost all of the overseas territory. What a change in the last 200 - 300 years.
I have read about Spain in Awake! Magazine, the story of Islamic confrontation with the militant church under queen Isabella was very interesting. Thanks for the video, dear
Hi @Paul, when you say Spain longest river is the Ebro, is worth noting that the Tajo/Tejo is longer than Ebro, but it is shared with Portugal. Lovely video, thanks for this newly re-lauched channel
Thank you. But I’m going to stick to this ten minute format. Langfocus became a complete nightmare because I made it too detailed and now making a single video takes hundreds of hours of my life. It has really ruined the engagement on that channel. I’d rather make concise videos and make more of them. I can always add new videos focusing on more specific topics later.

😄As a Valencian who does speak Catalan and doesn't give a sh...about this stupid language conflict, I found your comment about the many (to be expected) comments in exclamations very funny.
As a fellow Valencian, I totally agree, it's not safe to tell the truth about language here. Also, it's not safe to say that Catalan (including the Valencian and Balearic dialects) is actually halfway between Italian (specially the Sicilian language) and French (Specially the southern dialects), despite having borrowed a lot of vocabulary from Spanish
@@Vyrlokar De fet, no és que siguem un punt mig, sinó que lingüísticament som germans de l'occità, no dels dialectes del sud de França. Pel que fa a Sicília, no ho sé.
As a Spanish citizen I would like foreigners to notice that we have thousands of bull-related festivals, San Fermín is not the only one, and you can find some of them which more authentic and interesting.
So Paul, in which side are you? Real Madrid or Barcelona? 🧐 I love your videos and this wasn't the exception, congrats! Btw Spain is one of the few countries I would live in besides mine (Argentina).

Thanx for not putting flamenco as a background music, there are a lot of Spaniards that have nothing to do with it (as a Catalan, nothing at all, neither with toros, sangría, etc...). You prepare well your videos, obviously.
Something which is not necessarily of criticalo importance but is perhaps worth mentioning, is that the capital Madrid, is the highest in terms of altitude, of any European country..!! A contributing factor given that it is also one of if not the most southern capital located geographically speaking of any continental european country, to the comparatively extreme temperatures recorded in both summer and winter.
Basque language was not preserved because of the territory, but because of baques peoples did not fight back romans, unlike others in Spain. Because of this they were not romanised like the rest of the peninsula
I'm from Córdoba, a landlocked city in Andalusia. I wanna say that Andalusia has a distinct accent from the rest of Spain and that is as hot as hell. Btw, though I'm 14 I'm gonna participate in a "procesión" of Semana Santa in two weeks, which is 8 hours long. We have to wear costumes with a "capirote" (something cone-shaped that we have to wear on our head) and a "cirio", which is like a very long candle. Also, Arriba España!! 🇪🇦💪
@@flawyerlawyertv7454 nazareno is the name received by the people who joins the religious parade the guy I replied to said he would to join. "Arriba España" was the motto of Falange Española de las Jons, the fascist party of Spain (still legal btw, such a joke of a country) and was later adopted by Franco's "Movimiento Nacional", as well as the name of the oficial journal of Francoist Spain
hey, I'm from Spain and I'd like to point out that there are more languages spoken in the country. I know maybe it's a lot of information for a 10 min video, they also are ultra-minorazed languages and face extinction, but I thought it was worth mention them since anyone who'd interested can lose their chance to get to know them in next years. And I'm refering to the autoctonous ones, but there's a lot more languages brought by immigrant population that can be heard as well in the streets!
I like the video and I think it will be great if you do a recopilation of the smallest countries of the world and explain the culture. Like Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican, Liechteinstein, Malta, Gaambia, Guinea Equatorial...
When you talked about Andalusia you missed a very important city. You mentioned Seville and Granada but Córdoba was the capital of the muslim caliphate, the most advanced city in Europe in the middle ages and it is currently the only city in the world with 4 UNESCO world heritage awards, among them the amazing mezquita or mosque, which used to be the second largest in the world after Mecca.
It seems like the Valencian/Catalan stuff is like the Moldovan/Romanian issue, though, to be fair, I know that standard Valencian has differences in pronunciation and some words are different from Catalan whereas standard Romanian and Moldovan are 100% similar, except for where to use the letter î instead of â (pronounced the same, anyway)
What I want to know is: Is there a huge market of English teachers in Spain? I mean, for instance, Japan and China are known to hire lots of ESL teachers; is Spain like that as well? Asking for a friend
Well, you have some advantage there, you just need to learn one language and add som dialect particularities at the end. Segur que si hi fiques voluntat te'n sortiràs!
Great video, Paul, and cool place to visit. Didn’t know the only part with Mediterranean climate is that just along the Mediterranean. Odd that Galicia ended up in Spain and not Portugal.
I'm a Spanish person so I can explain,in the mid of the Reconquista the kingdoms of Castile(united with León) and Galicia united, and later, the previously Galician country of Portugal made its own country, the Kingdom of Portugal
@@victormanuelalonsoalbert7287 I am a Galician that can tell you that the Galician aristocracy was stupid betting on the losing side and that's why they all ended killed and Galicia subjugated to Spanish rule
Hi, I'm always impressed by how much research and work goes into each and every release of Lang and Geo Focus. I've learned a lot by watching them. That is what drove me to write this comment. My name is Rafael, I'm Portuguese and I just spotted an imprecision in the Spain video. It mentions that Portugal came from the kingdom of Galicia. This is incorrect. Both Portugal and Galicia started by being counties of the kingdom of Leon, Portugal later became independent. As far as I know, Galicia was never a kingdom.
A little sad that you didn't talk about how Catalunia and Basque Country are countries that also include territories in france, but overall great video!
@@armandocatalunya1312 With that sort of comment, you may find you are rather "Des-armando" Cata Lunya-n support even among (the rest of -yes, as much as you would hate to admit it, you don't represent a clear majority of Catalans) Spaniards who consider your cause reasonable. That wasn't reasonable; that was dumb, spiteful, bitchy and damaging. Not the way to go...
I hope that Algeria, the largest country in terms of area in Africa, has a long history, a rich cultural heritage, ethnic diversity, and Algeria is the Mecca of revolutionaries.

Thanx for not putting flamenco as a background music, there are a lot of Spaniards that have nothing to do with it (as a Catalan, nothing at all, neither with toros, sangría, etc...). You prepare well your videos, obviously.
¡España en mí cúlo!
Nice job👍👍👍👍
Pls do a video of Turkey
Basque language was not preserved because of the territory, but because of baques peoples did not fight back romans, unlike others in Spain. Because of this they were not romanised like the rest of the peninsula
You pronounce names in Spanish very well. I'm serious. You even sound like a native Spanish speaker.
Thanks! My Spanish isn’t very good (at least my speaking), but I tried to pronounce the names carefully.
Nazareno y fascista, todo en uno! A la hoguera
@@TheEloyMiranda ?????
@@flawyerlawyertv7454 nazareno is the name received by the people who joins the religious parade the guy I replied to said he would to join.
"Arriba España" was the motto of Falange Española de las Jons, the fascist party of Spain (still legal btw, such a joke of a country) and was later adopted by Franco's "Movimiento Nacional", as well as the name of the oficial journal of Francoist Spain
From what region is the woman's dance in the Bryan Adam's song, "Have you ever really love a woman"?
Geofocus Turkey? Consider it... Thanks for the videos!..
It’s a country so it’s on the list.
@@GEOfocusChannel Thanks for answering. I will wait for it. 👍👍
hey, I'm from Spain and I'd like to point out that there are more languages spoken in the country.
¿Dondé esta España en mí cúlo?
When you talked about Andalusia you missed a very important city. You mentioned Seville and Granada but Córdoba was the capital of the muslim caliphate, the most advanced city in Europe in the middle ages and it is currently the only city in the world with 4 UNESCO world heritage awards, among them the amazing mezquita or mosque, which used to be the second largest in the world after Mecca.
En el sur de Francia también se habla catalán y Vasco. Francia está centralizada y los vascos y catalanes franceses no se atreven a pedir más derechos
1:48 you forgot the Alhucemas Islands
Do the the basque country in more detail
I've thought about that, actually. It's on my list of alternate topics, but I might move it to the main list.
0:34 Also Ceuta and Melilla border with Morocco.
Yes, I mention that later in the video. :)
This video and Hellen Rennie's video on Spanish onion soup were uploaded at the same time. Are you and her secretly collaborating?
I’ve never heard of her, so it’s just a coincidence.
nice
It seems like the Valencian/Catalan stuff is like the Moldovan/Romanian issue, though, to be fair, I know that standard Valencian has differences in pronunciation and some words are different from Catalan whereas standard Romanian and Moldovan are 100% similar, except for where to use the letter î instead of â (pronounced the same, anyway)
✨Colonisation✨
What I want to know is: Is there a huge market of English teachers in Spain? I mean, for instance, Japan and China are known to hire lots of ESL teachers; is Spain like that as well? Asking for a friend
I’m not sure how big the market is or how much you get paid, but I know it’s not an uncommon destination for English teachers.
@@GEOfocusChannel Thanks, Paul! I could only imagine how great it can be to work and live in Spain if your target language is Spanish.
I have always been interested in Catalan and Valencian language, art and history, and it all began just because my lastname happens to be Valencia 😅
Well, you have some advantage there, you just need to learn one language and add som dialect particularities at the end.
Segur que si hi fiques voluntat te'n sortiràs!
There is no valencian languages, is a dialect
I want to give you Oscar Paul .
You are doing amazing.
My favourite thing about Spain is their Spanish language.
I regret Galicia never became part of Portugal as they have much more in commom with Portugal than with Castille or Aragon.
Man Nigeria have over 500 different languages.
The exact number depends on how they're measured (ie. what's a dialect of a language versus a distinct language). But there are a lot!
Its good time to ask geofocus on Portugal?
I’ve already made the video order and schedule for the next 4 years. lol. Portugal should be live on June 2 (one week earlier for channel members).
Galicia was a kingdom by itself, with the capital situated in Bracara Augusta (Braga).
The “hey bro wassup” joke was awesome.
Not really, but thanks for humoring me 😄
💃
🌎👍
A little sad that you didn't talk about how Catalunia and Basque Country are countries that also include territories in france, but overall great video!
🥰🇪🇸
Actually Catalan is actually a mixture of French and Spanish.
What is the currency of Spain?
Euro
in 2002 (20 years ago, time flies) a lot of UE countries switch to Euro. Before that Spain had the peseta.
Bankrupt
@@armandocatalunya1312 Bueno, al menos lo hacemos juntos
You are weird. You don't know the history of Algeria 🇩🇿
U forgot to mention asturian another soon to be coofficial language
When you say “soon-to-be” do you mean an official decision has been made to make it co-official? Or that you intend to make it co-official through petitioning the government?
Asturian is basically the progenitor to Castilian.
You did butcher the pronunciation a bit, but very accurate video!
People even say that about my English, and it’s my native language. So 🤷♂️
No he didn't!
No, he didn't...

In Summer, it's way easier to find someone who speaks English, German, Dutch, Swedish, French or Italian than someone who speaks Catalan and/or Spanish.
