Today’s BMW engine problems must have a lot to do with the so called long life engine oil that now BMW recommends oil changes every 16000 miles, I had a bad experience as second owner of an X5M serviced at dealership under schedule that seized engine at 87000 miles
The engine in our 750Li let loose at 90,000 miles. New engine and install cost $5500. Got a low oil light about two weeks after getting the car back. BMW builds trash vehicles these days.
What a quality engine .I remember when BMW engines were good .whats going on these days?? It’s not just BM None of them can build anything good it seems now😩😩
There isn't a v6 model. The engine would fit, hardest part would be wiring it up and coding it to the rest of the car. Not worth it. Buy a v8. Both e70 v8 engines are dreadful however.
BMW is currently replacing my Valve Stem Seals, Rear Main Seal, and Oil Pan Gasket on their dime because of the class action lawsuit associated with the N63 Engine excessive oil consumption. My car was using, on average, one quart per 800 miles. 2011 750Li ActiveHybrid 7 with only 66,000 miles. Car was using oil when I bought it with 49,000 miles.
The Oil Consumption Test is in a recent Technical Service Bulletin. Call your Dealer and have them look up TSBs associated with your car. If you have an N63 motor, your car should qualify for the free oil consumption test. If they determine that your vehicle is using excessive oil, they'll determine what is causing the oil leak, and then send that info to BMW to approve the work. This is how it was explained to me.
I have a 2012 bmw 550i GT and it’s burning a lot of oil too. It has 68k miles. I’m gonna try to call bmw and see if my car qualifies for that job. Anything I should know before calling? What info do I need?? Thanks.
@@ivanrodriguez9270 The dealer told me there was a Service Bulletin out for my car called an oil consumption test. I had been monitoring the oil consumption since I bought the car (I logged the odometer reading every time the low oil light came on), and so they took my info and did whatever they did and told me that BMW USA was approving the work to fix the oil leak. Long story short, you don't have to say anything except ask what Service Bulletins are open for your car. If the Oil Consumption test is one of them, ask them to do it.

As an owner of a used 5 series with this engine I have something to look forward to. You wonder if someone can't engineer dropping a more reliable drivetrain into the same vehicle.
No clue. I'm in Australia. Bmw has reduced the price of factory reconditioned long blocks to a point where you are likely better off replacing the engine rather than relair it. As much as i prefer the repair method, anew engine is better for the customers pocket.
Thanks for posting this very helpful video. There have been several cases of N63 engine failures. Have you seen this? Is it due to the rod bearings or some other component(s)?
Thanks for your feedback! I personally haven't experienced this but have heard of rod bearing failure on these engines. I'm based in Western Australia so we don't see as many n63 as in the USA. I'd be greatful if you subscribed to the channel or shared the video, as little things like this make a difference to a small channel like this. Thanks
My n63 failed. Dealer said it was due to a spun rod bearing. This was a few weeks after replacing the stem seals due to excessive oil consumption. When the engine failed, it broke into chunks, broke the engine mounts, bent the flywheel, locked the wheels up and i came to a screeching halt.
Sorry to hear Steve. It's such a common issue with the n63 engine. In the USA there is a class action lawsuit regarding this issue as far as I'm aware. Here in Australia, no chance.
As a BMW owner, I'm embarrassed at this overly complicated, poorly designed engine. It's ridiculous that car manufacturers get away with producing engines with so many design flaws. The root cause is probably insufficient cooling and insufficient oil flow to the guides, resulting from the hot-v architecture. I'm surprised that you didn't change all of the chain guides, since they were accessible. They are all made of the same cheap plastic, so no doubt more of them will fail.
They already did. I believe they fixed the problem around 2016 n up. Also they knew it had kinda bad oil consumption from the start & recommend & adding a quart of oil about 700 to 800 miles.
BMW last updated this engine in 2018. “N63 and S63 M version have received refinements in the form of Valvetronic, twin-scroll turbochargers and higher pressure direct-injection, in addition to other cursory changes made to improve cooling and overall reliability” hopefully it is more reliable!
BMW is trash. It shows when you buy a $105,000 car that depreciates $85,000 in three years. Then only worth $10,500 the fourth year. Japanese and American built cars are engineered much better and hold their value much longer.
I have an X6 V8 2010, cost close to $200,000 with an N63 in it, it dose use oil the work shop Forman told me that it’s a high performance engine and that they do use oil, since yesterday I started watching Utube videos about the N63 engine, wow what a piece of rubbish, I have done 71,000 km’s I love the car but now not the engine, I will now look to replace the car with something like a Toyota which seems to be more reliable and cost effective, I feel heart 💓 broken.
I have the same exact engine in my car. Gotta say it is the worst engine BMW has ever manufactured. Had to replace it after 90k miles from oil consumption that led to rod bearings being crushed
What garbage engines BMW now make. I had this in an E60 550i M Sport. Worked nice as a package, but the BMW warranty was a god send. I would not risk one without, which is annoying as I want an E65 750i Sport!

How much did this cost? And also why do the valve stem seals & guides go in the first place? Seems to be a V8 problem
How much was this repair
I have a video where I talk about there is no such thing as Upper Cylinder Lubrication. I said engine builders do as much as they can to keep oil out of the cylinders.
My point is, fuel addictive companies are creating problems that don’t exist to sell people something they don’t need.
On your channel?
Today’s BMW engine problems must have a lot to do with the so called long life engine oil that now BMW recommends oil changes every 16000 miles, I had a bad experience as second owner of an X5M serviced at dealership under schedule that seized engine at 87000 miles
Alejandro Pedroza what happened after the engine seized?
@@yoloomis It seized to exist ;-)
My BMW dealer recommended oil changes at 12,000 kilometers, however I chose to change oil every 9,000 instead. Oil is cheaper than engine repairs.
The engine in our 750Li let loose at 90,000 miles. New engine and install cost $5500. Got a low oil light about two weeks after getting the car back. BMW builds trash vehicles these days.
Where are you you guys located? I want all my cars to go to you guys
Western Australia
I normally remove it from the top . Of carouse the way you did the best
I’d love to know the total cost of repair in Australian dollars.
Hey mate, was down at the BMW and asked for a quote to do the valve stem seals. Was told anywhere from 10k to 12k to do them.
What a quality engine .I remember when BMW engines were good .whats going on these days?? It’s not just BM
None of them can build anything good it seems now😩😩
Hi sir I'm from New York I have a n62 v8 similar to this can u explain how to remove the valve guides and where can I get replacement part
Valve guides are pressed in. They aren't listed by bmw as a replacement part. My machine shop made some up and fitted them.
@@FourRingsAuto so if I'm not getting any play or wiggle with the valve I should be fine right
@@Trinibad718 realistically yes that would be the simplest test. The n63 seems bad for it.
hey just a question would a v8 E70 engine fit inside a regular v6 engine bay with out headaches?
@@danielpeeks3388 BMW North America refused to replaced valve sleals in my X5 2011 83k miles, they wanted to replace the whole engine and for me to pay 45% plus tax around 6000-6200, I say screw you.... I called pro shop in NY they say they drop the engine and replace valves for 3300-3500... I do not drive much only local max 300 miles a month,,,, I don't know what to do... Maybe I sell as is and get Acura MDX or something else.... This car is completely joke, just spend 500 to replace air shocks and 680 to open the hood and replace the hood link and latches ....
Why would you R & I the engine when there are products on the market that allow the repair in situ??
you think a sloppy valve stem from a previous bodge repair can be fixed with some additives bro?
6 of one, and half a dozen of the other.
Great video 👍🏻
Which valve stem seals did you use original or elring?
Go for elring
I would put a new timming chain onas well to be save ,!!? And new plastic guides for chain
It is a good thing to advise, however customers look at the bill rolling up on a job like this and they start declining the extra "whilst we're there" and "to be safe" items. Where do you stop I guess, but I do agree.
Hey, can you give me rough estimate how much is repair like this cost. I called verrezano shop in NY and got estimate of 3300. BMW dealer wanted to replace the whole engine under bang lawsuit and told me to pay 6100. I have no problem with engine, can runs smoothly, I own it for 3 years, recently oil consumption came to 1 bottle every 300 miles, I only drive locally around town 2-3 trip 5 miles each a day. On the highway I can probably do 500 miles or so, but the worse think is the smoke when car on the idle, very annoying in winter when you warm up your car and sometimes smoke goes inside the cabin probably through airvents when heat is on.... Please advise
You'd be better off replacing the complete engine for one with a manufacturer warranty that is the updated version. These engines are a never ending story of issues mainly oil leaks. 6k for an engine is cheap.
i have a bmw 650i with the N63 engine can bring it to you for repair, the engine light is on due to a Mass Air Flow Sensor Fault??
I'm in Western Australia
how much will u guys charge (first of all u guys are in Florida ?) to do the same to a e71 n63 2010 bmw x6m, I mean how much will cost me to do it right, thanks
Western Australia
Okay, after owning a 2003 Range Rover with several hundreds of engine issues with the M62 why is this engine failing at such a low mileage? Is it lack of service or crap from BMW? I remember when German cars were reliable. But this is inexcusable.
No wonder I see these 650i's going for dirt cheap, you're much better of getting 640i With the b58 engine
Good morning sir how are you doing today please i have this problems we my x5 where can i fun you to do the same work for me thanks appreciate it.
I am in Western Australia
This engine is ART
No.. it’s trash.
@@secretsquirrel572 not trash if you understand German engineer it will probably take 4 more generation model, and now you will see better improvement on a 2020 or 2022 model these issues have been solved.
@@hulk-smash-deez-hose.7951 the class action lawsuit paying out hundreds of millions to the owners of BMW models with this engine says differently.
@@secretsquirrel572 you have to understand, German advance newer engineering technology, the only way to find out how to complete the errors, is to let particular models perform mileage intervals to properly diagnose each common problems, right now the N63TU is very much reliable in newer models, bmw has been improving, older engines may have ruined certain peoples trust, but others who decided to stick to the brand, they’ve seen the improvements, the n63 is probably the best v8 modern engine.
Where are you based? In case I buy this 650i
And how much did all this work cost?
Western Australia
Ah right. Your British accent made me think you were from UK. No worries
Originally, yes!
How manny hours of labour am I expected to pay for if I get this done the same way not at a bmw dealer I got a trusted eurocharged shop near me that .confident can do just as a good of a job ...
As an owner of a used 5 series with this engine I have something to look forward to. You wonder if someone can't engineer dropping a more reliable drivetrain into the same vehicle.
It depends on what yr is your 5 series. If your N63 has TU on it. The problem will be less likely.
@@isserdigan2835 2012.
@@1954cs sadly your engine is the original ones.. better to be proactive..read the link..bmwtuning.co/n63-engine-problems/
If i were taking the engine to this level, id replace the chain and all the guides.
It already had that
anyone thoughts on the easiest way to replace the y-line
Why not just put new heads on it?
How much does a repair like this cost in the US"
No clue. I'm in Australia. Bmw has reduced the price of factory reconditioned long blocks to a point where you are likely better off replacing the engine rather than relair it. As much as i prefer the repair method, anew engine is better for the customers pocket.
how much was cost for the job have similar burning issues with my 2012 650i
I'm in Australia so prices may vary to where you're located. I will see if I can find out the price.

About much is a job of that size parts and labor
I loved this video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks
@@FourRingsAuto Suncribed already. I will share your video with N63 community.
@@warriorsf911 thank you for your support. The more these videos get shared, the more we can give to the car community.
I hope they did the right thing and made some form of contribution.
Hi great job! How much would you charge for a job like this? Thanks @FOUR RINGS AUTO
I'm not sure how much this one was now tbh. Around 40 or 50 hours, plus machine shop costs for refurbishing the cylinder heads, parts etc.
My advise dont waste your many on apiece of crap..germine cars are designed on failer and to repair ..
None of the work you did requires the engine to be pulled?
You know best
So this is not plumbed for dual scroll turbos?
S63 has dual scroll, from memory this early n63 didn't. The n63tu2 had twin scroll also 2016 onwards.
I have the same problem in my 650i
Sorry to hear Steve.
I have an x6 m and I have same problem
We should all come together and
And put a huge law suit against Bmw
I'm sorry but I've never seen a push rod engine fail like this.
I don't know why anyone pulls the N63 out that way. They come right out the top in an hour.
Dilligaf
I have an X6 V8 2010, cost close to $200,000 with an N63 in it, it dose use oil the work shop Forman told me that it’s a high performance engine and that they do use oil, since yesterday I started watching Utube videos about the N63 engine, wow what a piece of rubbish, I have done 71,000 km’s I love the car but now not the engine, I will now look to replace the car with something like a Toyota which seems to be more reliable and cost effective, I feel heart 💓 broken.
Lol its about piston rings,, propably this will not help. That engineis so poorly design that its make me want to cry....
Wut!?
I have the same exact engine in my car. Gotta say it is the worst engine BMW has ever manufactured. Had to replace it after 90k miles from oil consumption that led to rod bearings being crushed
What. E for inlet and A for exhaust? Wtf man. Makes no sense at all.
inlet = Einlass exhaust = Auspuff
I’m just kidding. I’m american sooooooo. Great job
What garbage engines BMW now make. I had this in an E60 550i M Sport. Worked nice as a package, but the BMW warranty was a god send.
I would not risk one without, which is annoying as I want an E65 750i Sport!
Bmw is the German Kia over engineering at its worst
N63 better go ahead and replace the oil limes too… pos
N63 to garbage
What a stupid engineers what a poorly design, thats why I continue driving my 2001 & 2003 Bmw 525i both 5 speed manual im so so happy with this real Ultimate Driving machine.
