Hey t3ck can I use this method for a 2014 650i f12? Are there any obstructions or issues taking out the trans this way? I just have RWD. Or is it better to drop the cradle? I’m replacing the engine
Hello, I have a 2013 BMW F10 550xi Msport and with 70k miles valve seals went. Running full Dinan stage 6 on car and have a Crate motor sitting in shed for replacement on AWD car. 40 years experience working on cars and motor swap does not intimidate me, but dont have a 4 post lift. Work would be done in driveway and want to see if a portable 20-30 inch lift is high enough to get out the trans on the car. Also, do you offer any DIY directions on the work you do on this video? I will also need to pull front driveshafts for the AWD. I would be will to pay for any documentation you have that I can pull BMW TIS directions to follow for proper procedures and Torques as project goes along. Did the Turbo upgrade a couple years ago with no issues and that is most of the top of the motor. I live in NJ and if i could find a Mechanic AS GOOD as you are with a fair price for an engine swap, I would pay him. LOL But rarely have i ever found someone that pays attention to detail like you, knows what a torque wrench is and Does things like pulling Injectors for a cleaning and sending out Alpina turbos for rebuild at pure turbos in CA as you go along. Already order new wheel bearings as i have to pull the shafts anyways. If you are swapping motors, replace or rebuild everything that is out so you dont have to do it later. If you have SOPs on motor swap, let me know. Thanks and EXCELLENT work!
Is it the same process and time on an 09 750i RWD swb? Drop the tranny without touching the exhaust/driveshaft then pulling up the engine from the front?
hey Dillion, if i got an engine swap from a bmw dealer and it says short block on the paperwork, n63 2012 750li is that generally a long block, complete remanufactured with updated parts to hopfully eliminate a lot of the issues we were having, with new pistons rodes, heads, fuel enjectors, spark plugs etc etc? nice video.. thx for unloading any break in suggestions for 1st 1000 miles? i feel alittle vibration when accelerating after on a cold start at low rpms, when its going into 3rd gear, goes away after warms up.
short block is actually the long block, block, heads and all internals, most of the time injectors are reused, they are usually a cold start rough running or hard acceleration misfire, some cars have a warranty extension on them, as far as break in BMW doesn't recommend anything specific, i wouldn't take it to the racetrack or anything but i give them a couple full throttle pulls to make sure everything is good before i release them back, id rather have the issue while i have the car than give it back to the customer and they have to come back,

I am looking at a 2011 550xi vinC783362 with 98,000 that has a blown engine that I can get for under $4,000. How many hours labor for engine swap? Thanks. Oh, excellent video by the way. Ive always done engine pulls from the top but that was on older American rear wheel drive cars. Seeing it can still be done helps but with an Xi model out the bottom would probably be the preferred?
It’s close to that. It’s a rebuilt unit. There’s a ton of other parts that go with the engine replacement that are not included in that. Labor is probably around 30 hours depending on the dealer. Usually all in it costs about $10-$12k if it needs turbos that’s more though. I pull all cars out the top drive or not. X5’s and x6’s I drop. They don’t physically fit out of the top. Shock towers are in the way.
It’s close to that price. It’s a rebuilt unit from Germany. Together with all the other parts needed labor at the dealer is usually around 30 hours to replace. Most the estimates I do are $10-$12k. I pull all cars x-drive or not out of the top. All X5 and X6 I drop. They don’t physically fit out past the shock towers.
T3ck_lyfe thank you for the reply. I decided to pass on the 2011 550 even though I could have gotten it for $2500. I am thinking that engine design with those turbos mounted up top and in the middle of the V is just something that will require major maintenance all to frequently. My daily driver is a 2005 545 sport with 214,000 that I’ve done all the usual items on including valve stem seals. I love the performance of the V8’s and would probably really love the N63 but I had a local BMW service manager advise me to walk away. Thanks again.
i don't yet, most of what i have been doing is the original n63, i did one n63t in a f15 and its pretty similar to the e70, but you don't have to pull the inter cooler on the trucks, i do that to access the heater hose at the water pump, on the trucks that hose continues to the rear of the head and disconnects there,
If I knew it had a perfect oil change record maybe. They aren’t bad engines. They just have some issues that get neglected. When everything is good they run awesome. There’s a lot of room for more power.

Hmmm, he removed the tranny without removing the exhaust + shieldings. I wonder if that would be the case for all other BMW tranny removals like on a E60 M5 with SMG.
Professional question. Since BMW's stated process is to do this repair without removing the engine have you run into issues with warranty with extra parts billed or do you reuse everything?
tests take a couple house, the check the timing chains, compression, inspect for oil leaks and send all the info to BMW then they make the decision on to repair or replace, engines are backordered a few months out usually,

I love the performance of the V8’s and would probably really love the N63 but I had a local BMW service manager advise me to walk away. Thanks again.
Do you have a video doing this on an F15 X5? Do you still take the drivers side intercooler for access out if you are dropping it out of the bottom?
i don't yet, most of what i have been doing is the original n63, i did one n63t in a f15 and its pretty similar to the e70, but you don't have to pull the inter cooler on the trucks, i do that to access the heater hose at the water pump, on the trucks that hose continues to the rear of the head and disconnects there,
Knowing what you know about the N63 engine would you recommend tuning it with the JB4 kit?
If I knew it had a perfect oil change record maybe. They aren’t bad engines. They just have some issues that get neglected. When everything is good they run awesome. There’s a lot of room for more power.
Oh man. I want to replace my downpipes. I see that heat shield that wraps them. How hard are downpipes to remove without pulling the engine???
Is the process the same for an N63TU - F13 Coupe?
Pretty much. Couple things are different.
@@MrDbaggins I’ve completed the motor work since my initial comment…big thanks for showing us your sneak attack method for pulling the motor, I used your exact method.
i replaced a customers n63 on a 2009 750i and now i get a short to ground code for the turbo auxilary coolant pump....checked relay and fuse, wiring, grounds and all is good. replaced pump witha genuine part and still dont know what else could be the issue..
Is it possible to remove the intake manifold withour removing the engine ? For cleaning carbon build up
Maybe but it’s a pain.
T3ck_lyfe I love pain, should i buy one and try ?
Can you recommend a source for a quality rebuilt 4.4 for an E53?
Wondering if I can contact you, I’m about to tear out my first n63 , well first ever bmw motor. My rod Bering went. Wondering if you have any replacement motors! And have some questions. Please let me know how I can reach you bud !
Did you end up doing this?
Would it be easier to just drop the motor and transmission together? I have to do valve stem seals on a 750 with n63 engine. Ive dome the n62 valve stem seals on the car with the tools you used but it was such a pain and took forever. Great videos. Thanks.
Actually no it would not. To many things in the way. Easier with motor out.
Can this be done with the 650i x drive out the top?
Yeah. Just pull the axles
Do not say you removed the engine and shouldn't have any problems with warranty.
i use all the parts they give list, bmw is pretty good about extra parts being billed they don't list unless its something big,
Holly Molly!! Dude you snap! 1 hour! Dude I got this. I’ll take 2 days. Wish me luck 😢!
Why are the other videos private?
Didn’t want any issues with bmw. Changed them all back to public now.
@@MrDbaggins thank you sir, much appreciated!
How long did it take to the tests and how long did it take for bmw to send out a new n63
tests take a couple house, the check the timing chains, compression, inspect for oil leaks and send all the info to BMW then they make the decision on to repair or replace, engines are backordered a few months out usually,
thank you bud
Can u geta little detail on the class action settlement for the n63 engines ? Can't find a video anywhere ?will they really replace ur engine for u???
Yes, if they find something major wrong with it. The car must have less than 100,000 and never had the ccp done for any other work.
@@ryanc7652 oh ok gotchu thanx for the reply.. apparently my 550i had the settlement " fulfilled " by a bmw dealership in Nevada @ 45k miles my car has 75k miles now
.im in California so they couldn't find any details on what was done to it
you are awesome!!!!!!
Frijidir moror mirsidis 2015 isans
Pimp Mechanic!! You should make more vids!!
Working on it!
Sound greedy, but you could have pointed the camera at the engine for the video. Would have made it helpful!
thank god I only have to pay an hour worth of labor
😂 if only!
How much labor do you charge for that and putting a new one in?
Man where you at I need your sevice
thats dope thanks ~
Wow man, you're really skilled! Would this motor fit in a M135i, making it a M150i?
wow
The sound is terrible for this video. Great removal job
Where are you located I might want to bring my n63 to you
It's on him shirt
was this job all under warranty still ??
Do you do repairs? Have a 2011 550i
yep looks like he does repairs
Does this work on f01 as well or only f10
Pretty much the same
How much oil was that car loosing every 1k miles? Mine is burning 1qt every 500 and in my country I don’t trust anyone to work on it. :/
bmw says 1 liter per 750 miles, try to find a bmw specific shop, not just a European shop, ask them if they have done them, most of the time is just needs valve seals and oil leaks fixed
Are you in NC by chance ?
I am
Where are you located?
Hey Dillon, so as you know i had mine replaced about 6 weeks ago. The cars been sitting in my garage for about 2 weeks and its leaking coolant. Could you give me advice to where a common coolant leak would be coming from. Im gonna take a peak this weekend and see what i find. Thank you Dillon, hope all is well
Leo Zabo if the leak is coming from the back of the engine, it’s the rear seal. Must take transmission down, while at it replace crankshaft seal
possibly turbo coolant lines or the y-pipe between the heads, some times the sensor in the lower hose,
Top 👏👏👏👏
As a BMW DEALER TECH who's made a living off power trains, THE ANSWER IS NO.
You watch the video? Legit 1 hour.
what do you charge for this?
The bad sound cost you a lot of views
It’s my most viewed video
Next Step: Sell it for Scrap
naaaa, we fix them! the rest of the car goes to scrap!
