@@dnl35projects I have a question. Early in the video, the main caps are installed with only the two center bolts. The assembly goes quite far before the outside main cap bolts are installed and torqued up. What is the reason for this?

I have a 2013 X5M at 174k+ km, and running strong getting 19mpg....under 120km/hr. I had to replace the CCV stuff, ignition/spark, rear suspension airbags/air block and coolant reservoir; fortunately no fuel injectors but there is some . Keep the engine cover off to keep from baking all the coolant and CCV lines, change oil every 5-6k miles, trans fluid/filter every 40k, and ignition & spark plugs every 20k

Hi, that’s the plan with the current F10 M5 I’m rebuilding. I can guarantee you I’m posting these in the future but due time issues it might be a while. Between, the assembly procedures for N63 and S63 are the same since they have the same block.
Great content on the S63! I know its a shot in the dark but I have a 2020 X5M with the S63TU4 motor and I've been chasing down a intermittent misfire in cylinder 6 that only happens during idling. Motor has 40K miles on it and never been tuned. I've thrown every part i could think of and has made no difference. I can monitor the misfire counter using an app and can see only #6 misfire count go up to 50-60 within a minute or two then resets back to zero. No misfires once i'm moving and it only happens if i idle for more than 30 secs. No CELs and no fault codes stored but i could feel it slightly while sitting inside the car. At this point i've changed the following parts with all OEM BMW and the misfire remains. All Spark plugs, all Coil packs, both primary O2 sensors, Low pressure fuel pump in the gas tank, #6 fuel injector. Car drives absolutely perfect and has been babied since day 1 when I bought it new. Any ideas what i might be? Its strange that it only happens at idle and only that cylinder. Anything guidance is much appreciated!
@@dnl35projects no oil on any of the spark plugs. All look barely used even at 30K miles. All of them looked identical. I even swapped to new OEM coil twice on that same cylinder and idle misfire persist. Some days it’s less and some days it does it more but I can’t seem to see any correlation with any outside factors like AC on/off, temperature, fuel etc. aside from doing it at idle it does also do it during cold starts where you can feel slight rumble. I think most BMWs I’ve had did this though
Thank you for the reminder, had commented previously. Have 2012 750i and just got the engine out. I am in the tear down process. Has at least one bad rod bearing and one scored cyl wall. Not sure what direction I will go to get it fixed. Would likevto try and minimize the cost. Worked in machine tool as a BSME designing high milling spindles. Have engine swap of 525i and done a partial rebuild of an early Ford tractor.
Nice ! If the bores are scored you will need to sleeve the block. I heard of a dealership in America selling long blocks for about $4.5k and do t know if that’s a myth or not - it’s hard to believe since a crankshaft cost half of that …
Definitely like and you definitely earn this subscription I have a 2013 BMW 750LI extra drive and have to go through this whole process also it's so fuzing irritating to think about how much money we've spent on these cars and they don't hold up
Hey, I understand your frustration but on the bright side if you do get through the rebuild and address all major N63 issue the car (or at least the engine :) should be good for a long time.
I'm thinking about doing this job myself. This video was right on time. Thank you for sharing your voyage with this. I definitely hit the like button. I made sure to hit the subscribe button. I'm looking forward to watching you're next video.
Thanks David. The process can be a bit overwhelming and really time consuming but not as hard as it looks if you follow the BMW manuals. My plan is to do a step-by-step video (or few videos) on the S63 rebuild, just finding hard to locate time for editing all videos.

@@dnl35projects nice one. I’m hoping to get an E70 X5M in the next 12-months and would film some content after that - so keen for any detailed pieces you put out!
Goo to know you’re on top of your maintenance - the oil return housing is a common issue on these V8’s but what bothers me is that BMW does not make a gasket for it and force you to buy a new housing ….
Excellent video! And you showed every detail. I was reading comments and answering each person. Respect!!! I have X7 i50 2019 It has 39000ml on it. Running good. What do you gonna recommend me for the future?
Hi, thank you ! At that sort of mileage your engine should be perfect still and you also have the updated version of the N63. My advice would be to change the oil more frequently than BMW recommend ( 5k miles) and and definitely keep all fluids up to date.
I haven’t seen them failing and we even re-use the original bolts on some applications as the bottom end of these motors are very strong with 6 bolts per cap
Hi, I have a video for the M5 but unfortunately not for the X5M - the only thing really different is the fact you have adaptive suspension on the X5M and a few hoses to be disconnected under the front RH wheel arch.
Hi there, that block is a S63 out of a 2011 X5M however both S63 and N63 blocks are the same, made from the same casting - The only block difference is the ways some of the oil/water galleries are drilled but the S63 has a big "N63" imprinted in it. Both use the same crankshaft and same 6 bolts bearing caps
Hi, I’m yet to receive that block back and should start assembling it over the next week or so - I’ll definitely make an update video on how that performs
Hey buddy, im just about to start taking my x5m 2016 engine out to start rebuilding. thank you for up loading, you havent got a full video have you? again thanks Phil
Hi Phill, I’m currently waiting on parts to start rebuilding a S63TU which is exactly like your engine and the plan is to make videos along the way discussing clearances and torque specs. This however should take another month or so. Let me know what you need and I’m happy to help out.

Hi, great work!!! And so much detailed, appreciate this alot. Please can you help with torque specs for the S63tu main bearing cap bolts and the straight con rod bolts. Thanks in advance 🎉
Hi there, I’ll have my computer (with BMW software) back in a few weeks and could check that for you. The plan is to make another video with all torque specs for this non-tu version but the TU shouldn’t be much different
Yea that video with all torque specs will indeed be very useful for the bmw community at the rate with which this engine is being rebuilt nowadays. Thanks in advance 🎉
Great video! Processes are to accurate and meticulous. Please, please, please😁provide a list of all torques specs you used; I can't find a consolidated list anywhere. Thanks from Norfolk Virginia.
Thank you ! I’m in the process of making a step by step assembly video but that will take a little while. Download ISTA (BMW software) it has a manual for everything in your car and not only the torque specs but how to correctly assemble and dismantle parts.
Great video. My engine is the S63B44T4 on the F96 chassis. Can you please tell me some precautions about this engine, especially what should be noted for everyday 0:15 driving? Thanks!
That engine is a dream and the best S63 made (I'm currently rebuilding a hydro-locked one) and its a day and night difference when compared to the original non TU (the one in the video) - The best thing you could do to keep that engine healthy is not to abuse it on the first 5 min of driving (engine is cold) regular (5k kms or 12 months) oil changes - Don't take me wrong, these engine are made to go fast and produce big HP but ONLY after your temp gauge is sitting half way. It is also a good idea to replace/flush ALL fluids every 2-3 years (coolant, transmission fluids etc)
Thanks - Regarding the safe HP, it varies a lot depending on the TUNE - a well maintained S63TU should be able to push close to 700Hp safely on stock internals
@dnl35projects Thank you very much !!! As you said close to 700hp is safe Is it safe for transmission as well? Let's say 100hp more then stock Would be safe for both engine and transmission? Thank you again!!!
Wow! impressive work!! im curious about the N/S63, ive got a 09 750i, can i just put S63 pistons, rods, exhaust camshaft and turbos and basically have a homebuilt S63?
Hi Denzel, thanks ! The garden hose and some degreaser did most of the job however I also built a Vapour Hooning cabinet for the aluminum parts - It does an amazing job with the engine covers and small bits
Hi, the pistons and rods were still good and this it my wife's car, anything with 100Hp that moves is OK for her 🤣 let alone the 550HP already in the car. The Current M5 I'm rebuilding is going to be fully forged - Keep an eye up for the next videos
Great job Daniel! Thanks for the video. I’m planning to rebuild my engine. Hopefully, the block is in a good condition and won’t need sleeving. Noticed that you used piston rings from Goetze. Could you please send me a link for the set? Googled it many times, checked their official catalogue, but couldn’t find piston ring kit for s63b44 from Goetze. Thanks in advance
Hi Luka, the part number for Goetze is 08127300-00 and they do fit the stock S63 pistons HOWEVER please bear in mind you may only use these rings if you sleeve your block. The stock S63 block is made of ALUSIL and these rings are NOT compatible.
I'm chasing oil leaks on my 2010 bmw x5m (s63). So far Im doing the VGC as well as the oil separators. Whats confusing me I have oil all over the injector rail on both sides of the engine. Are these engines known for having leaks around the intake manifold. This is my first s63, so Im learning as I go. Thanks in advance
Hi, it was blowing a bit of smoke 💨 and I was certain it was the stem valves but once I opened it there were scratches on 2 cylinder walls. 162k Kms - these engines are beautiful but they definitely need rebuilding after 100-150k kms - even if it runs well, every single seal/gasket will leak
Hi ! Thank you for video! I am about to rebuild my n63 or at least replace valve stem seals, can i ask you to tell me where did you get complete list of gaskets/orings/etc to order? thank you!
@@dnl35projects thank you! Do you know, is it possible to remove heads without engine removal? And if no - is it possible to remove the engine through the top? Without using a car lift?
Depend on the car you can remove from top but I’d advise against it - it’s much easier to drop the subframe with transmission than trying to access things from the top
Valve stem seals are the most common reason these engines blow/consume oil - Depending on the mileage your rings could be a bit worn making the oil consumption higher.
@dnl35projectstnx for answer. its 230tkm, compression ratio is 9, one or two cylinders 8 something,is this difference a problem? What's the easiest way to check valve stems and rings or i need to take valve covers off again?

If i have to replace exhaust camshaft on bank 1 can i get away without touching timing on intake? And have you ever seen or heard of code 164041 exhaust camshaft installation faulty code thank you
Thats an awkward code - Did you just build the engine or it threw this code out of the blue ? The timing tool holds both cams and the crank in place so you will need to loose both vanos sprockets (intake and exhaust) them re-tight them with the correct timing
Great job...I have recently found one cylinder 6 of intake cam turn blue .On further inspection found that cam cap is scored badly at one side along with cam ..Any one can tell what cause of that. Thanks
greetings brother! Great job, thanks for sharing your knowledge! I can ask you a question, I have a 2012 BMW X6 M, S63 4.4 twin turbo gasoline engine. The block broke, I'm looking for a block to make the new engine. Several mechanics tell me that the N63 block is the same as the S63, is that true? if you can help me thanks 😎
Hi, Yes the block, crankshaft, oil pump and several other bits on the lower side of the engine are the same and in fact my S63 have a big "N63" written behind the timing chain guides. The main differences between both engines are pistons, cams, exhaust manifold and turbos
@@dnl35projects Thank you very much for your answer. if my car block says N63/1 and the serial is S63B44A. so with your answer I'm going to look for a 3/4 of an N63 engine and the rest I have from my engine since what broke was the block. thanks again
Hi mate! Been thinking for a long time about taking a s63 in poor condition and rebuild it. What do you think about it? I wanna try something new it’s just for me :) I'd be very happy to hear your opinion on this. many thanks!
Hi, I think it depends on the car’s condition and whether you’re rebuilding it to keep the car or re sell it after it’s complete. If you’re building the car for yourself and can do most of the work it is definitely worth it however if your intention is to buy a cheap E70 X5M for example, you will not be able to make much money considering the time you spent on the rebuilt. That journey of rebuilding the whole engine is definitely something you will remember forever 👍
Hi, the lower sump gasket is an easy task but in order to remove the upper sump you’ll need to support the engine from the top and remover the subframe / engine mounts and some lines/wires attached to it - the transmission does not need to be removed as you just need to remove some of its bolts to the sump.
The S63 and N63 are great engines but due to its design the heat produced is enormous with the seals and gaskets unable to cope with it once the car goes past 100-150k kms - if you do a rebuild before the engine seizes it would last for a long time. If you don’t want to go with the rebuild route I’d say focus on having a perfectly functioning cooling system and have your rod bearings done.
Quick question about setting the timing, did you put the camshafts in a certain way or it doesn’t matter ? I have rebuilt Audi engines but never BMW ones nd not familiar with them, with Audi engine camshafts have timing marks on them
Hi, you’re correct - timing the engine is exactly that, aligning the crankshaft correctly with the cams so they are synchronised. If you’re engine is out of timing the valves could open at the wrong time and destroy the engine. Both S63 and N63 engines have timing marks however I highly recommend using the correct tool to do this job. I’m yet to make a video but there are a few vids on RUclips showing how to do it.
@@dnl35projects changed PCv valves and oxygen sensors. Smoke test negative. Long term fuel trim bank 1 went from 20’s and bring up check engine light to 10-15. Still high, maybe bad fuel injector?
Well done for the work, very professional, looks great, I have a garage and also a car like this, I'm doing a project on it, if I need parts, maybe you can help me, my name is Rom, and I'm from Israel, I'd appreciate your help, thanks
Can you please tell me where i can get all the gaskets and all that engine components at I need to rebuild my engine. Also the torque specs diagram, and everything. Thank you
Hi, you can buy the gaskets from FCP Euro or ECS tuning website. Its considerably cheaper than buying from BMW - Im currently working on a video for the toque specs on that engine.
Hi! Couple weeks ago I have completely rebuild my engine - new bearings, piston rings, timing chain, oil pump, cylinder heads were resurfaced etc. it had 295 000 km so it was good moment to do this. After rebuild, first 500km engine was treated very gentle and after those 500km I changed oil + filter, oil of course wasn't looking perfect and there were very small rasping. Next 1000km engine was treated a little more hard but still not more than 3500 - 4000 rpm and never full throttle. This weekend I have changed oil again - after those 1000km it's still not looking perfect. Do you think it's normal? Engine run perfect. Maybe 1500km it's still not enough for all parts to "fit" ? How oil was looking in your car?
Hi, did you wash the oil lines and oil cooler ? There’s acceptable to have some debris on the first or maybe 2 oil change but not much. At this stage I thing there’s isn’t much you can do. Yes I had bits of the old bearings on the first oil change (1000kms) and will be doing another one soon (5000kms)
A question...when putting back the rear end cover 11148483799,,is there any gasket for it? If not,, do you put sealant around it? If so,,which sealant? Thank you
Hi, unfortunately BMW does not make a gasket or a seal for this part and it should be replaced once removed (the new part comes with a silicone gasket applied to it) - The same thing goes to the oil return cap 11428092560 under the turbos - I am tempted to install the oil cap using a normal silicone gasket however I would definitely NOT do it with the coolant passage cover (the one you mentioned) due to the pressures in the coolant system.
Hi Mitch, it was actually a friend who owns a machine shop / engine building business here on the Northern Beaches (Sydney) I asked if I could share his business details on RUclips and he said NO cause he was too busy 😩 Apparently because these blocks are made of Alusil it’s a lot harder to do then a normal aluminium/cast iron block. Yet he still charged me $4k but luckily my pistons were good and we were able to re-use them. I could try to convince him to do another one if you’re in Sydney.
Great job! I bought a 2010 X5M and the engine blew in the first month. The auto dealer would not help me at all. So it has been in my driveway for almost two years now. I wish you could help me fix it? What I saw with the endoscope camera was one of the cylinder walls looks like it cracked. And I'm getting quotes of 15,000 USD to fix it. I'm so sad and still paying on the loan.
I'm sad to hear that Nick. Unfortunately that's it happens a lot, it might even had a problem before you bought and someone just patched it up to put the car for sale. I'd definitely help if you lived near by. On a bright side, once you have the engine and taken care of, these cars are amazingly fun to own and drive. They pretty fast and have lots of room for any hobbies you may have. Do you have any interest in rebuilding the engine yourself ? I could help remotely 🤣🤣
Hi, I'm about to make a video about this very same question but at 270k kms I'd say the best thing to do if you want to keep the car for long is to drop the engine and rebuild it. (if it hasn't been done). The Rod bearings and main bearing on this engine (in the video) have 162.000kms and they were OK (a little wear but OK) - When I did the bearings on my M5 it had 140.000kms and were completely destroyed. If the previous owner did not abuse the car and always waited for correct oil temp before driving it hard your bearings could be good still (considering you are also looking after the engine and changing oil frequently)
I haven’t bought those really cheap kits but I know someone who did and ended up not using some of the parts because the quality on it was just too bad
It all depends on how much damage is inside - what h the F10 M5 videos on our channel, that engine was seized and we are going through a full rebuild - Also the S63 and N63 are basically the same engines.
Hello, I am from Brazil and I follow your videos. I rebuilt the engine of a 2014 BMW X5 with the N63 engine, and after the rebuild, the car started misfiring on cylinders 5, 6, 7, and 8. It seems like there is a lack of oil in the head on that side. What do you think could be the issue?
Hi, I highly doubt lack of oil in the head would cause the misfires and given the fact that you just rebuilt it the issues are more related to either the HPFP on bank 2 or the wiring harness / plugs to the ECU. Vc é de SP ?
Hi, is there any particular reason why engine block have been sleeved ? I own BMW 650i with 100k miles, it desperatly need an engine rebuild. BMW sells oversized pistons and there are shops who can bore and hone alusil blocks.
Hi Peter, the cylinders 2 and 5 had deep marks on the walls and sleeving the block was my best option. No shops in Australia would do the Alusil block and the cost of it would outweigh the benefits. Having the block PROPERLY sleeved will increase its ability to hold higher levels of boost. Also all 8 pistons were perfectly fine so I just had to sleeve the block and replace the piston rings
Hi, they are OEM BMW pistons and rods, with a heat treatment and skirt coating done to the pistons. The rods on some 2009 and 2010 are cut differently to the post 2011 onwards S63
What is the factory crankshaft main bearing clearance in n63tu am trying to change the oil from the factory because the place i live in the weather temps are hight it reachs 45c to 55c And the idea of an oil with certification of ll01 fe isnt needed because i will remove the factory catts to high flow catts
BMW calls for a main bearing clearance of 0.026 to 0.046mm however I prefer to be on the higher side (around .040 or .045mm) and use a 5w40 synthetic oil. Removing the cats will definitely make the engine run cooler
@@dnl35projects thank you soo much for the reply i cant imagine that question like that to know the oil viscosity for my car comparing it to main bearing clearance that is not available any where in GOOGLE!!!
Hi Muki, that section of the gasket has a special "Rubber" compound which expands when the parts are torqued together creating the seal - Also BMW manuals don't call for silicone on that section - Hopefully I won't leak 🤞
It's very hard to say since that will vary a lot but if proper maintenance is done along with frequent oil changes, the engine block itself should outlast the car easily. There are several cars with ALUSIL blocks going over 400k kms, the only downside is that the S63 /N63 engines have gaskets and seals that don't last much more than 100-150k kms so thats when the engine should get its first rebuild in my opinion.
@@dnl35projects Thank you so much! I have several cars, of which Porsche Cayenne and BMW with aluminum blocks, do you have a couple of tips about their maintenance? Thank you in advance! I appreciate your time and information in messages!
wanting to clean my injector well, I dropped a small 5 cm plastic brush into the piston at the bottom. is it dangerous to leave it? if not how to extract it? Thanks a lot.
You most definitely need to remove it. If that brush jams one of the valves open the piston will likely hit it and it wold be game over for your engine. Try compressed air with a long nozzle pistol.
Hey just 1 question. With the chain tensioners bolts. Can you get them freely in the engine without them having some tension or do they build tension with them going in the engine ?
Timing chain wear on the F85 is not as bad as in the E70 but still cannot be ignored. There is a way of checking how stretched the chains are it by inspecting the tensioners (small lid behind the intercoolers) however if you want to replace the chain is definitely an engine-out job and rebuild. basically there is no way to replace the chains without removing the timing cover and in order to do so, you first have to remove the sump and the engine heads to be able to remove/install the timing cover.
I have a 2015 N63 that does not burn oil , but i notices after driving for hours. I smell burnt oil only on the passenger side..smell like it hitting the exhaust, but no one can find the leak
Thats a N63TU - they develop oil leaks in their early stages of life and usually the oil burns with the high engine temperature and dont leave traces - It is also very hard to diagnose because of the hard to reach areas around the engine bay but if I was to have a guess I'd point to your Valve cover gasket and PCV hoses

Any ideas what i might be? Its strange that it only happens at idle and only that cylinder. Anything guidance is much appreciated!
Its very hard to say without checking the car in person, it could be the wiring to either injector or coil - Any oil on the old spark plug ?
@@dnl35projects no oil on any of the spark plugs. All look barely used even at 30K miles. All of them looked identical. I even swapped to new OEM coil twice on that same cylinder and idle misfire persist. Some days it’s less and some days it does it more but I can’t seem to see any correlation with any outside factors like AC on/off, temperature, fuel etc. aside from doing it at idle it does also do it during cold starts where you can feel slight rumble. I think most BMWs I’ve had did this though
Super vidéo Daniel ! Précise et complète ! J’adore 👌
Merci mon ami

Great video. Would be great to see wiring setup
I'll be doing some wiring videos on the F90 M5 I'm currently building however the BMW wiring harness is pretty well made and intuitive
Great video…nice to see videos on n63 repairs. Did some work on mine. Had to replace the turbo oil return housing. Used lil REINZOSIL.
Goo to know you’re on top of your maintenance - the oil return housing is a common issue on these V8’s but what bothers me is that BMW does not make a gasket for it and force you to buy a new housing ….

Excellent video! And you showed every detail. I was reading comments and answering each person. Respect!!! I have X7 i50 2019
It has 39000ml on it.
How often do you see the main caps fail on tuned n63s?
I haven’t seen them failing and we even re-use the original bolts on some applications as the bottom end of these motors are very strong with 6 bolts per cap
Fun project......I want to do this.....
All you need is time, patience and some money 😂 These engines/cars are fun and will go a long way if the rebuilt is done properly.
can we please know how much did it coast you to get everything for the rebuild propably make a list for each thing you bought and used with the price
Hi, I’m in the process of making a video explaining all that - for a good running engine you can expect to spend about $5k in parts plus labour
Thanks!
Welcome!
Great video! 😁 Do you have a video or timelapse of taking the engine out of the car step by step?
Hi, I have a video for the M5 but unfortunately not for the X5M - the only thing really different is the fact you have adaptive suspension on the X5M and a few hoses to be disconnected under the front RH wheel arch.
Excellent video. So I imagine that since I don't see 6 bolt main bearing caps, it is the N63 engine that you reassembled?
Hi there, that block is a S63 out of a 2011 X5M however both S63 and N63 blocks are the same, made from the same casting - The only block difference is the ways some of the oil/water galleries are drilled but the S63 has a big "N63" imprinted in it. Both use the same crankshaft and same 6 bolts bearing caps
Ok, thanks. I just didn't see you put the side bolts into the engine block, which then go into the main bearing cap.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi, really great content! Thanks!
Any news on this M5? How do KingTech rods/pistons handle?
Hi, I’m yet to receive that block back and should start assembling it over the next week or so - I’ll definitely make an update video on how that performs

Hi Phill, I’m currently waiting on parts to start rebuilding a S63TU which is exactly like your engine and the plan is to make videos along the way discussing clearances and torque specs. This however should take another month or so. Let me know what you need and I’m happy to help out.

Thank you for your videos!!!
I wish you were in canada
What is the safe tune for this engines?
How much hp is safe ??
Thanks
Thanks - Regarding the safe HP, it varies a lot depending on the TUNE - a well maintained S63TU should be able to push close to 700Hp safely on stock internals
@dnl35projects
Thank you very much !!!
As you said close to 700hp is safe
Is it safe for transmission as well?
Let's say 100hp more then stock
Would be safe for both engine and transmission?
Thank you again!!!
Wow! impressive work!! im curious about the N/S63, ive got a 09 750i, can i just put S63 pistons, rods, exhaust camshaft and turbos and basically have a homebuilt S63?
You could do that in theory but the car will need to get tunned so you can take advantage of all those mods
@@dnl35projects ill be looking at getting a M5 DME, turbos, manifolds etc, looks like i better start ordering bits 😁
Great job. What's the torque specs for the upper oil pan ?
Hi, it varies depending on which version of the engine you have
Nice job. I can see you’re a very meticulous person 👏 what do you use to clean your parts?
Hi Denzel, thanks ! The garden hose and some degreaser did most of the job however I also built a Vapour Hooning cabinet for the aluminum parts - It does an amazing job with the engine covers and small bits
I am enjoying your video. Why did this engine need a rebuild in the first place?
It was blowing a lot of smoke and had high oil consumption - we found damages (scratches) to two cylinder walls
I've got that torque wrench! One question, why would you not up the rods? Budget build for customer, or they're not going past 700/800 hp?
Very nice video. Are those cylinder sleeves? Were the original cylinder bores out of spec?
Hi, yes 2 cylinder walls had Dee scratches on them so had whole block sleeved
I'm chasing oil leaks on my 2010 bmw x5m (s63). So far Im doing the VGC as well as the oil separators. Whats confusing me I have oil all over the injector rail on both sides of the engine. Are these engines known for having leaks around the intake manifold. This is my first s63, so Im learning as I go. Thanks in advance
It could be the valve cover gasket
Nice video. Why did you have to rebuild the engine? How many kms were on it? What symptoms did it have?
Hi, it was blowing a bit of smoke 💨 and I was certain it was the stem valves but once I opened it there were scratches on 2 cylinder walls.
162k Kms - these engines are beautiful but they definitely need rebuilding after 100-150k kms - even if it runs well, every single seal/gasket will leak
@@dnl35projectsThey are very impressive, even though they aren't the most reliable. I hope it lasts for you! Thanks for sharing the video.
Fantastic

Hi ! Thank you for video! I am about to rebuild my n63 or at least replace valve stem seals, can i ask you to tell me where did you get complete list of gaskets/orings/etc to order? thank you!
Buy the N63 head gasket set from Elring - it’s cheap (like $200) and has all gaskets you need to do both heads, including the valve stem seals
Excelente
Thanks
My s63 oil consumption is like 1l 1000km, no oil leaks, have rebuilded turbos, just changed oil separators, still same.
What you suggest to check next?
Valve stem seals are the most common reason these engines blow/consume oil - Depending on the mileage your rings could be a bit worn making the oil consumption higher.
@dnl35projectstnx for answer. its 230tkm, compression ratio is 9, one or two cylinders 8 something,is this difference a problem? What's the easiest way to check valve stems and rings or i need to take valve covers off again?
Can u share us the torque specifications from connecting rod, crankshaft and cylinder etc. thanks and God bless 😊
Hi, I’m working on a more detailed (technical) version of this videos and will have the torque specs with assembly tips. Keep an eye out on the channel on the weeks to come - Thanks
What about converting it to dry press in cylinder sleeves for durability like they do on the 2000hp coyote blocks
Hi, Unfortunately I have no experience with this kind of procedure.

Yes they are good engines, just need to be looked after properly
greetings brother!
@@dnl35projects I am looking for a m5f10 from 2015 in good contidion, but I really appreciated your opinion. I have subscribed to you! Good luck👍
i need to replace the lower and upper oil pan gasket, does the subframe or transmission need to be removed, i have a 2013 bmw 550i
Hi, the lower sump gasket is an easy task but in order to remove the upper sump you’ll need to support the engine from the top and remover the subframe / engine mounts and some lines/wires attached to it - the transmission does not need to be removed as you just need to remove some of its bolts to the sump.
whats your upgrades to prevent/remove the common issues on the n63/s63? :)
Great video, but the music threw me off, great content regardless 👍🏽
Thanks 👍

@NickDent i feel you pain i had my 11 x5m for about a year and my engine just somehow hydro Lock
I have that same engine and question for you, if when engine still ruining good is it necessary to replace rod bearings ? Car has 270 kkm
Hi, does eBay rebuild kits any good? Or Amazon? Or where to buy good one with reasonable price, thanks
I haven’t bought those really cheap kits but I know someone who did and ended up not using some of the parts because the quality on it was just too bad
Hello if my n63 4.4 twin turbo is locked up do I need a rebuild or is that engine done?

What brand piston rings did you use? Also are those different connecting rods they dont look like X5M
Also do you remember the piston ring sizes
Hi, they are OEM BMW pistons and rods, with a heat treatment and skirt coating done to the pistons. The rods on some 2009 and 2010 are cut differently to the post 2011 onwards S63
What is the factory crankshaft main bearing clearance in n63tu am trying to change the oil from the factory because the place i live in the weather temps are hight it reachs 45c to 55c
And the idea of an oil with certification of ll01 fe isnt needed because i will remove the factory catts to high flow catts
BMW calls for a main bearing clearance of 0.026 to 0.046mm however I prefer to be on the higher side (around .040 or .045mm) and use a 5w40 synthetic oil.
Removing the cats will definitely make the engine run cooler
@@dnl35projects thank you soo much for the reply i cant imagine that question like that to know the oil viscosity for my car comparing it to main bearing clearance that is not available any where in GOOGLE!!!
i think u will get a leak from the upper oil pan as u did not put sealent where the block meets with the timing cover
Hi Muki, that section of the gasket has a special "Rubber" compound which expands when the parts are torqued together creating the seal - Also BMW manuals don't call for silicone on that section - Hopefully I won't leak 🤞
What is the average engine life with the original alusil cylinders?
It's very hard to say since that will vary a lot but if proper maintenance is done along with frequent oil changes, the engine block itself should outlast the car easily. There are several cars with ALUSIL blocks going over 400k kms, the only downside is that the S63 /N63 engines have gaskets and seals that don't last much more than 100-150k kms so thats when the engine should get its first rebuild in my opinion.

wanting to clean my injector well, I dropped a small 5 cm plastic brush into the piston at the bottom. is it dangerous to leave it? if not how to extract it? Thanks a lot.
You most definitely need to remove it. If that brush jams one of the valves open the piston will likely hit it and it wold be game over for your engine. Try compressed air with a long nozzle pistol.

Why was the harmonic balancer on when you where torquing crankshaft
I find easier to rotate the crank using the harmonic balancer - It was just sitting there not torqued
The head bolts should have a couple rounds of 90 degree turns
Correct, you can see the numbers written on cardboard at 10:52. The head bolts are torqued to 30Nm + two times of 90 degrees of angle
What's the torque specifications for the main and Conrod tightening?
Hi, they are torqued to yield then rotated - I’m about to make a video with all torque specs, hopefully in another month or so

my engine S63 X5M F85 has 120k miles on it. I know timing chain is an issue, do I need to do a full rebuild? Pull engine out etc?
Timing chain wear on the F85 is not as bad as in the E70 but still cannot be ignored. There is a way of checking how stretched the chains are it by inspecting the tensioners (small lid behind the intercoolers) however if you want to replace the chain is definitely an engine-out job and rebuild. basically there is no way to replace the chains without removing the timing cover and in order to do so, you first have to remove the sump and the engine heads to be able to remove/install the timing cover.
@@dnl35projects thanks for advice. I guess I will check the tensioner. Another RUclipsr also mentioned tightening the oil pump chain.
