The RIDICULOUS Price of Groceries In NOME ALASKA: How Much Did It Cost?

- Today's walk through started out with some interesting surprises. Shortages and empty shelves could basically devastate a small village community. Alaska Commercial company is considered one of Nome's most important stores. Most of these items are shipped strictly by airplanes and some larger items by barge. Cars, trucks and ATV's have to be ordered 6-8 months in advance just to make sure they have a place on the boats heading north. Inflation is a huge problem in our daily lives all over the globe. I hope you were able to compare Alaskan prices to your neck of the woods.
In time this channel will be covering other local stores to see how they might match up to your areas. The topics of being better prepared for anything has always been on Alaskans minds since we deal with some of the harshest elements in the world.

Myself and family have been looking in to relocating to alaska. The costs are definetly a worry. Great video by the way.
Best of luck! There's a cost to living here and an additional cost for doing business here. The ones who struggle often choose to live a life of higher class than what they can afford. 😉👍
The food prices are hell, but the expensive gas is relative when you consider Nome is a town that doesn’t connect to anything so the actual usage of fuel by drivers is going to be drastically lower than somewhere like Anchorage or Fairbanks.
There's a pretty large road system in Nome and I haven't noticed any reduction in usage compared to being in Anchorage or anywhere else. Most people are driving to work, or just for fun. Then we still need oil changes and routine maintenance. Can't wait to go back and visit family ❤️👍
@@BigManAlaska That’s fair. I just meant it’s all there locally. It’s not like driving from one city to another in the interior.
Adorable children.
I guess I would have to figure out a greenhouse if I lived there😮.
And raise poultry.
And eat a lot of seafood.
We have Grocery Outlet here. I stop in every day on my way home from work. I just look for the extreme discount items that come in. Ten cents a jar for Heinz Turkey gravy. Guacamole for a dollar, good for 3 months.
Dried milk for cheap. Evaporated milk for 25 cents a can. Kodiak pancake mix or cake mix for 50 cents. Coffee for a dollar for 24 pods ( I bring that to work). Progresso soup for 50 cents.Kalamata olives for 2$ a jar ( my little splurge).
For wine - if I run out of my homemade stuff- I go to Fred Meyer. Buy six bottles for ten % off the sale price. If there is a 20% off deal, it s worth driving to Oregon to save the sales tax. Then I stock up for winter and Christmas gifts. And barter goods.
I miss having the room for chickens. As you probably know they're extremely therapeutic with their nature. Plus give you a reason to get dressed every day.
I spent a week in Nome first part of August. So I got to see those prices first hand. WOW........ 16.99 for 10# potatoes. 58.35 for a case (24) powerade. 24 pack of water 37.99 OUCH.........
Got 2 12 packs of Miller, and 2 bottles of V-8 juice....... 85$ Needless to say my beer drinking was tapered back. LOL
And you mentioned going out for dinner.......... We went to the Subway one evening. 4 of us, and the bill was over 100$. So much for the 5$ foot longs.
Don't get me wrong, I loved my time there. But yes, the prices are outrageous. Planning on coming back next summer though. Want to try some of the fishing up there.
Hahaha 🤣 yes the sticker shock blows my mind and my family lives there. We live in Anchorage and don't like the prices here. I spent about 7 years in Joplin Missouri with all those outlets stores and Aldi's. But I hated the tornado seasons. I'll live with unexpected earthquakes and cold winters 🥶😄
I'm in Northern Alberta, Canada and except for some of food (at the very beginning of the vid) all of our prices at our Walmart and local shops are higher than yours. We all should do a vid like this at our Local Store so we have a record of prices in all parts of this continent. 👍👍👍👍👍
That's pretty much why we do them. Prices everywhere are all messed up with our wonderful governments claiming it's all good 😊👍
@@BigManAlaska - ain't that the truth.
Hey fam, Alaska prices are ridiculous to begin with! 💵
In some cases yes. It still boggles my mind about some lower 48 States with similar pricing in some areas 🤷
AC isn’t the place to shop! Hansens! Safeway specials offered weekly!
I get sticker shock every time I visit Nome. Hansen's does have some better deals but when my wife goes to Nome she's usually visiting her Mom at AC.
Prices aren't a whole lot different than what we pay in my small town in Montana. The meat was actually cheaper there.
WOW 😳 that's scary news. My family does a lot of hunting and fishing so the they don't have to buy as much store stuff.
@@BigManAlaska Baby food is cheaper than where I live in Ohio
@@Dakota-ro4wy sometimes that's because they need to sell it before the best buy dates.
Why thank you. I take pride in my work.
You should get Desi corn. Dogs are Masura otherwise tasty
I've had dog when in Mexico and it wasn't even bad. Poor puppy but still tasty 😋
i have lived all my live in nome and the prices you get usto
My wife was up for a funeral and visiting the family. We stay in Anchorage so they have a place or someone to help with hospital appointments.
Amazing what some people will do for attention
Considering the views are still under 1k I think we missed that mark. 😆😂😁
The only thing thats cheap is the air 😂
Not even that's cheap cause you gotta fly there 🤣. Then you freeze or get attacked by the State bird. Mosquitoes 😳
